  • Where does OK Go come up with ideas like dancing in zero gravity, performing in ultra slow motion or constructing a warehouse-sized Rube Goldberg machine for their music videos? In between live performances of "This Too Shall Pass" and "The One Moment," lead singer and director Damian Kulash takes us inside the band's creative process, showing us how to look for wonder and surprise.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). 7:16 "It doesn't feel like you thought of that puzzle piece; it feels like you found it."
7:28 "We're usually looking for this specific feeling, which is WONDER. And there's always a component of SURPRISE to wonder. So we're not just looking for good ideas; we're looking for ideas that surprises us in some way."
9:18 "The chance of getting all 130 things to not fail at the same time, is .9 (for 90%) to the 130th power. So calculate that out and you get .000001 (...) so your chance for success is literally one in a million."
11:10 "So what we do is we try to identify some place where there might just be a ton of those untried ideas. We try to find a sandbox and then we gamble a whole bunch of our resources on getting in that sandbox and playing."
12:05 "This may seem to you like testing, but it really isn't because at this point we don't yet know what our idea is. (...) We're just playing."

OK Go music videos are the clearest and best of where science and art intersect in pop culture.

Because when you watch them there is the science of the calculation, physics, optical illusion, and so many other aspects, but there's also the overall vision that results in something artistically beautiful.

Holy crap I did this too and I honestly didn’t think anyone else did this lol. I’m not where close to this guys talent level but I’m happy I’m not the only one who does this.

What comes to mind is that many ideas come from 'conceptual' or 'intuitive' processes - not linear processes. Say N vs S on Myers Briggs.

Yay, I was a fan since 2010, loved their music and their unique charm with it, relying not on appealing to pop culture but instead keeping their own ideas and emotions in their music. I love the complexity of their videos, both as a lover of their music and as an engineer who enjoys complexity.
Keep doing what your doing and thanks TED.
