OK Go: An NPR Tiny Desk Concert In 223 Takes

- The Tiny Desk has moved, and OK Go has helped make it so.
Earlier this year, we needed to figure out the best possible way to move my Tiny Desk from NPR's old headquarters to our new facility just north of the U.S. Capitol. We wanted to go out with a bang and arrive at our new space in style, so our thoughts naturally turned to a catchy pop band we love: OK Go, whose unforgettable videos have been viewed tens of millions of times on TH-cam.
Bandleader Damian Kulash used to be an engineer at an NPR member station in Chicago, so we figured he'd be up for helping us execute a simple idea: Have OK Go start performing a Tiny Desk Concert at our old location, continue playing the same song while the furniture and shelving is loaded onto a truck, and finish the performance at our new home. In addition to cameos by many of our NPR colleagues - Ari Shapiro, Audie Cornish, David Greene, Guy Raz, Scott Simon, Alix Spiegel, Susan Stamberg and more - this required a few ingredients:
Number of video takes: 223
Percent used in final version: 50
Number of raw audio channels: 2,007
Percent used in final version: 50
Number of microphones: 5
Number of hard-boiled eggs consumed: 8, mostly by bassist Tim Nordwind
Number of seconds Carl Kasell spent in the elevator with OK Go: 98
Number of times Ari Shapiro played the tubular bells: 15
Number of pounds the tubular bells weighed: 300
Number of times the shelves were taken down and put back up: 6
Number of days it took to shoot: 2
Number of cameras: 1
OK Go played "All Is Not Lost" from Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, with words tweaked by the All Songs Considered team. And so begins a new era for the Tiny Desk, after 277 concerts (counting this one) in our old home. -- BOB BOILEN

That is truly a moving song.
How is this comment not getting more likes. 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👌👌👌👌👌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
How have I never seen this before now? Love these lads and their wild ideas and smashing tunes.
Yes, I'm wondering the same thing.
Same! I'm impressed that this hid from me for 10 years!!!
If I watch this 223 times I'll still laugh at Grumpy Elevator Guy.
I think that was actually Carl Kasell!
Right? Bahaha
"Number of seconds Carl Kasell spent in the elevator with OK Go: 98" yup!
So Hilarious 😂
The "masters" of the one-take video, take it to the other extreme.
lol
Ok. You guys need to understand what cinema is. "One take" is NOT "one take" but a *sequence plan*. It's one *plan*, but *hundreds* of takes. Just like recording music live : *one* performance, *lots of takes*.
Not that we dont know. But still, to achieve a one take effect, you have to minimize scene transitition as much as possible, and each take is much longer than a normal movie/video. Takes a lot of efforts and stress to make sure things are right in a long take, and take a lot of efforts to edit scenes together in post. This is why Birdman is so revered, because not everyone would just do a six minutes long take over and over.
Haha yeah, it seems they either do all one take or a billion!
Damian falling over backward and getting smacked in the head by the tree were the greatest things ever. I love this band so much
I love how dan, in almost all of these videos, is like, "God... I gotta put up with this shit again..."
I love how they had a separate mic for the echo effect and how it looked like he (singer) was being interviewed while walking along. Not sure if this (the interview effect) was intentional but it was just awesome.
And I like how at the end of the echo section at the beginning, it's "okay, done with the mic for now, let's just pocket it".
Easily the most entertaining tiny desk video! First time hearing "OK Go" as well. Great band!
This was a fantastic way to move NPR! Perfect band, song, setting, video...Great Job NPR and OK Go!!!
This song & video is EXACTLY what we all NEED in this crazy world today! Because as Damian BELTS... ALL is NOT...LOST at all!!!
Brilliant editing & concept! Loved the audio at 2:18 where the sound guy opens the door and you can hear the effect on the mic. Good stuff!
They ARE awesome live! They talk to the crowd, they sometimes come OUT into the crowd, they are so funny and talented--you should see them live!
I love how Andy stares and look down when they are inside the elevator.cute!
Damian falling into the pipes on the bus was my favorite until the elevator. That was classic.
Carl Kassel! What a guy!
Thank you, OK GO,😉👋🏼!
Brilliant idea, brilliant execution. I didn't know what Carl Kassell looked like but somehow the minute he stepped into the elevator I knew it was him.
This is exactly how I wanted one of their videos to be. They're always so creative!
Bring them back for their new release; please. These dudes are such amazing musicians. Seen few so accurate to their recordings live.
I watched very closely at the pan around at the end, and "angry elevator guy" wasn't there. Was he REALLY that grumpy and not part of the bit? If so, he is the second most famous rando to wonder onto an okgo video. Maria (Mario) the goose being #1 of course.
Nope. That's the late, great, Carl Kasell, who was definitely not a grumpy old man.
I believe Marty moss-coane is also featured
My favorite is the NPR suit guy face bombing the video for a moment. He's so proud that he got to hit those pipes..
That grin :D
Is that really Ari Shapiro?
Me, every time watching an OK GO video: "Could you make me love you guys more?!?!"
OK GO, every time the create a video: "We can"
To be a good sport: one of the greatest of human qualities.
I can never get over how much better OK Go come off in videos than on records. Maybe they'd be awesome live.
Dude, NPR. Brilliant friggin idea.
3 of my favorite things: OKGO, NPR and my old hometown!
OK Go would be able to get away with something like this xD
So much fun to watch and try to anticipate the next location.
This was wild and amazing.
still my fav version after all these years!!
Absolutely wonderful! Would have killed to hear Carl Kasell say something curmudgeonly to the band on his way out!
wow, job well done.
Nice new office.
The most interesting, inventive, funny, crazy clips. I always watch with interest, as if for the first time. Thanks a lot for your creativity.
Car Kassel in the elevator is priceless!!!
2:26 i LOVE how he press the button repeatly XD
wouldn't have noticed if you didn't point it out, love it
I've just realized this lovely detail after all those years of watching.
Also noticed that Dan is pressing the down button for some reason, though they've just arrived there from the streets and are heading to somewhere higher than the fifth floor. Probably he's not calling the elevator desperately, but instead trying to cancel the miss-pressed down button
Classic OkGo making things harder on everyone for an amazing video XD
Always love OK GO's creative idea!
The perfect band for the job.
You guys always make me smile. Thank you.
Best Tiny Desk performance ever!!💙💗🎐🔹
Love you guys on multiple levels. Thank you.
I seriously couldn't imagine them doing it any other way. Always one for the dramatics. I'm obsessed.
i picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue. this is great.
Perfect idea for this.
Carl Kasell is the greatest voice that ever limericked.
wait, wait. Don't tell me . . .
At least William is a great fill in.
stepping up the tiny concert desk game, like always! legends!!
This is exactly why I love Ok go! Me gusta! Smart, funny, talented and great music. Nice concept and they pulled it off. Lovely.
love the smiley guy at 3:10 in the back
This video should have millions of views like OK Go's other videos. Great video editing.
this was fun to watch. your playtime (i mean hard work!) at the TinyDesk is appreciated. good job yall.
I love this video so much! It makes me smile a lot.
may be not the best band, but the most creative thinking one :)
great thanks to NPR as well
Just saw this. Timeless, awesome.
Ari Shapiro was so proud of himself at 3:09 hahaha
Great music,Creative movie. AGAIN!
Awesome execution of the video and the song! Love the idea!
Absolutely brilliant!!! ❤🤗
As always, they're fantastic.
Every moment on that truck I was terrified things were going to fall over!
10/10 would watch again
I am too, Carmen! I'm a mother of four and can't get enough of Ok Go!
This deserves more views!
3:21
And here is Andy, being as awkward as ever, really.
hes honest to god my favorite
LEAVE HIM ALONE HE'S DOING HIS BEST
The way this was shot reminds me a bit of a local indie band here in Baltimore called The Oranges Band. They did a video for a song called OK Apartment, the whole band was in the back of a truck, but stationary, and where they were changed throughout the song. In the bridge, they set up a ping pong table and the other side of the table is always a different backdrop.
these guys inspire me so much
They're just something else
This is why OK Go is so freakin brilliant.
So how many outtakes do you think have Andy getting smacked in the face by Damian's guitar?
neac99 a crapton.
This seems actually a very OK Go-ish thing to do, I believe. :)
When is OKGo NOT doing something completely off-the-chain-awesome?!
Absolutely enjoyed the hell out of this!🤗
My team needed you last week when we moved to our Tiny Desk.
AWESOME! Love the idea and the edit. Very kool to watch. Plus, I love NPR. :D
That boom operator
i have no idea how they did this. wow
omg ok go you are to adorible!!!
that was great. Ari Shapiro looked so happy to be a part of it lol
How did I miss this 11 years ago? 😂❤
Me too :) Definitely saw them filming early one Saturday while heading to teach Saturday School so that's highlight times two.
Lol the song stopping after the grumpy old guy gets in the elevator and reprising immediately after he walks out 😂
The thing that makes me the happiest about this video is Ari Shapiro big goofy grin twice.
It's different video and different audio takes. All of the audio was recorded wherever the band played, i.e. on the truck, etc. They used 5 mics and a total of 2007 audio tracks.
Leave it to Ok Go to take the music off of the tiny desk, out of the office, into the hall, into an elevator, out of the building, on the street and back again....I lost it when they stopped playing because/for that man in the elevator!
Bloody fantastic
they never fail to make cool music videos
Congrats, Tiny Desk on the new SPACE!!! Ok. GO!!!!!
hobo Johnson: "what happens when you mess up?"
bob: "just restart, it goes the whole time"
okgo: HOLD MY BEER.
Was that Carl Kassel in the elevator.?!?! Heart heart heart
This is everything!
You made me smile. Even bigger when the grumpy old guy shooshed you on the elevator.
The unimaginable imagined.
ASOMBROSO!!!! O_O …good job guys is amazing, love it !!! from Mex.
THAT!...was awesome!!
Because of who they are and because of who they're doing it for
Fantastic!
I love it so much, can’t even :3 thank you
This was fantastic.
That was Carl Kasell. He's the nicest man you ever met. But he's also a terrific actor ;-)
How have I not seen this thirteen year old video yet?
Hah. awesome video! nice going with ok go for the "theme song" for this move:D
Great job ❤
That was awesome folks!
