No-Cut Collage - Gelli Plate Tutorial

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ก.พ. 2025
- This is a companion video to last week's Gelli Printing Basics video ( • Gelli Printing Basics ... ), in which I demonstrated how I create my own collage paper on my Gelli plate.
Today's video details how I use the same Gelli printing principles, but instead of making full sheets of collage paper, I use several pieces of paper as masks in order to create a collage of gelli prints on each page. No scissors needed! If you're looking for a fun way to play and experiment with your gelli plate, I'd encourage you to give it a try. Making these one-of-a-kind, imperfect collages is a great way to loosen up your creative muscles.
Have you done this before? What do you call it? No-cut collage made sense to me, but I'm open to other options!
Did you know that every interaction you have with my videos (including likes, comments, questions, and/or sharing them with a friend), you make the algorithm happy, which helps more people come across my videos. Thank you!

I’d call this layered monoprinting. Very interesting! Random fun!
Thanks for the input! So much fun! ❤️
Patchwork prints. This is a great idea. Looking forward to getting my gelli plates back out to do this.
Yes! Have fun playing!!! ❤️
I love your "design brain", Jackie. ❤️ Despite having seen a large number of gelli plate videos, this feels very new. Can't wait to try!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it - let me know how it goes when you try it! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a wonderfult way to create a cohesive serie ! Thanks Jackie ! I'm going to use this to make my wrapping paper and cards ! Yay !
Ooh, wrapping paper and cards-love that! 😍 Can’t wait to see what you make! Tag me!🎁✨
@@jackieschomburgart I'm embarrassed to say I'm not certain what that means... is it like @jackieschomburgart - is this a tag? ☺
What a great idea Jackie! I think I'd call this a 'collage print' and I think you've invented it :) I think this would be great if you're stuck, not inspired toward anything in particular, or even if you're having a bad day and need a reset. I'm with you as a randomness fan -- it's like having an invisible partner in art-making who often has way better ideas than you do -- there's some really great ideas in there for future collages that you would never have found otherwise ❤
Oooh! Collage printing is a great way to think of it! Love the idea of the “art partner who has better ideas than you do” 😂❤️❤️❤️
So much fun!, Jackie! I love the random beauty that comes out of using this method ❤
❤️❤️❤️
This is so inspiring Jackie. Thank you for your generosity with mak8ng and sharing this video. Much love and peace from London UK 🇬🇧 🎉
Aw, that’s so sweet! Keep creating and shining, my friend! Big hugs! 🌟🌹
Thank you !!! Loved this process ❤❤❤
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 💖
I really enjoyed this … I laughed out loud when you talked about being open to imperfection or maybe try cross stitch instead… thank you so much for showing new stuff for me to try and the laugh 🌈
Hahaha! I forgot I said that 😂 So to have you watching ❤️❤️❤️
Really great! Amazing what came out of it! I will try it out too. Thank you. Greetings from Switzerland 🙋🏻♀️

Gelli Plate Collages! What an invention Jackie! 👍 Love those beenie rubberband circles too! Fun stuff! 😊
Haha, so glad you love it! 😆 Gelli + rubberband circles = endless fun! 🎉✨
This looks like a lot of fun. A great way to test out different color palettes too,
Absolutely - it'd be a great way to experiment with color! ❤️
Love them😊
Aww, thank you! So glad you love them! 😊✨
“Gelliage”? I love the rubber band effect. I’ve been staring at a pack of 500 for years and wondering who bought them and why. And while I may never know, I do finally know their impending fate! 🥰
Hahaha! Yes! Long live the rubber bands! 🙌🏻
Love this!!!
Yay!! So glad you liked it! 🙌✨
I love this! I must try it.
Go for it! You're going to love it! ❤️
Love this idea and cannot wait to try it! No Cut Collage is a good name for it.

From one Jackie to the other, thanks for this tutorial! I'm going to play tomorrow!

Wow Jackie, this is so fresh and You! Thank you so much 😂❤
Thanks Linda! ❤️❤️❤️
Wow, thank you so much. I found this so helpful. Just your colour choices and basically an instruction on how to have a group of collages that work together. I thoroughly enjoyed this and can’t wait to try it myself. Just subscribed!

great gelli session!
Thanks so much! 😄 Glad you enjoyed the Gelli session! 🎉💖
Jackie!!! Gosh, I haven't played on my gelli plate in awhile. Perhaps I'll get that out. Thank you for the inspiration. 😊🙏
Yes, Maggie! Dust off that gelli plate and go play!! ❤️🤩🌈
Cannot wait to try this! Thanx!
Yay! Have fun!! ❤️
Think I’d like to give this a try! Thanks so much !!!!
Yay! 🎉 So excited you’re giving it a go! You’ll totally rock it! 💖🙌
It never fails to amaze me how you can find new and innovative ways to "play" and keep things interesting. While I don't have a creative name for it (patchwork gelli printing?) I loved everything about it, from potential finished pieces to multi layered printed paper, it's truly incredible! ❤❤❤
Thank you, Paul! It’s entirely possibly that I’m just easily bored…🤣❤️❤️❤️
I’m so excited to try this!
Yay! 🎉 Can’t wait to hear how it goes! 😊 You got this! 💪
Always love hearing and watching you. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. Happy Holidays and keep on creating!
You’re so sweet! 💖 Thank you for the kind words! Wishing you the best holidays! 🎉✨
You are so kind! Thanks for watching - Happy Holidays to you too! 💖🎄
These are really cool! I can’t wait to try.
Yay! Have fun with it! ❤️🙌🏻🌈
Hi Jackie - I really like this - might have a go today. They aren' treally collages because there's no assembly by gluing. I would call them collectively a monoprint series because each one is a monoprint, and they form a strong series by all the shared colours and patterns. The fluro red and celadon is a surprisingly successful combination which I never would have thought of.
Everything you’ve said is true. And yet, when I see them, I see pieces of what would have been the whole sheet of collage paper divided up and added to other pages in sections - just as I could have done had I printed a whole sheet at once and cut it up into rectangles. In my mind both are true. It’s a monoprint and it’s a pseudo collage. If I cut out each separate section and glued it to a separate piece in the same order, that would make it a collage… but I think the feel of it is stronger leaving it un-cut. It’s like a circular reference in my mind 🤣
@jackieschomburgart Yes - really 'no cut collage' is a better term because it is more specific and that is what they look like. 'Monoprint' doesn't convey anything much.
I'm definitely going to try this on some acrylic art paper to make paper art prints!!! I LOVIT
Yes - go for it!
So gorgeous and elegant I’m new at this but I’m gonna try it next week.
Yes, give it a try! Worst case scenario? you’ll have collage paper to use in the future. 🙌🏻 You’ve got this! ❤️
Thank you for the baren link! And I love your funny sense of humor....'I shouldn't be giving fashion advice since I basically live in yoga pants'. Ha Ha, very cute.
Just trying to be upfront that I have other strengths 😂😂😂
I have heard it called block printing. - but whatever you want to call it - fun it is!!
Love how yours turned out ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent
Totally agree, it’s all about the fun! 😄 Thanks for the sweet words! 💖🎨
You’re welcome! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 💖
This looks like so much fun! After making detailed Christmas cards for the past month, this is something I really needed!!! I’m off to play with my Gelli plates 😊 Thank you so much for your inspiration ❤
Yes! It’s the perfect way to play to loosen up again! ❤️
@@jackieschomburgartI had sooo much fun yesterday making Gelli plate collages! They turned out wonderfully colorful and grungy ❤ Thank you so much 😊
Those papers are Fabulous. I always love your videos. Have a great Holiday. xoxox
Thank you, thank you! 😊 So happy you’re enjoying the papers and videos! Happy Holidays! 💖🌟
I agree that I'd call it a layered monoprint. I really appreciate you showing your ways of creating, it opens my eyes up to new ideas. I think I haven't explored enough with my gelli plate. I've wanted to create monoprints, but felt so often that they seemed a bit flat or one note- this idea of layering takes care of that for sure. Thank you for sharing!
Aww, thank you! 😊 I’m so happy this gave you some fresh ideas for your Gelli prints! 💖🎉
A multi-print as opposed to a monoprint? It's such a fun! And I love the colors and the overall result of your session!
Yes, you got it! 🙌 So happy you like how it turned out! 💖✨
I’ve seen other versions of this called segmenting. I like your method!
Ooh, love that you noticed! 🙌 So happy you’re enjoying my method! 😄✨
Lasagna Printing as in lasagna gardening....easy, organic but thoughtful and yielding yummy results! Thank You!!!
Couldn’t have said it better myself! Organic goodness at its finest! ✨
What fun! I would call this Gellage 😊
Haha, love the name ‘Gellage’! 😄✨ So much fun to create this! 🎨
Funny, celadon was my favorite glaze when I was working on an ill-fated ceramics degree, and I loved when it got over-fired a bit and turned raspberry around the edges.
Ooooh! I’ve never seen the raspberry but in my mind it’s gorgeous! 😍
@jackieschomburgart That's how I remember it, but it was almost 40 years ago. I also rued the loss of Albany slip, which I'd just discovered. Ah, well.
❤️
Drew Steinbrecher does this a lot too. Love this project ❤
Yesss! 😍 Love that! Thanks so much for the support! 💖✨
I love this! I call it patchwork. 😊
Love it!
Your collage print is a very good idea! You can „recycle“ prints which are not completely well done. Safe the parts you like and print the parts you aren’t satisfied with. They are getting a new life! 😉
I love this!!!!! I teach a class at a nonprofit for homeless youth and we cannot use scissors, this will great for them.
This makes me so happy! I hope the youth love it! 💙🎨
These would be lovely with layered translucent paints.
Agreed! ❤️
This is so fun! And freeing! …I think I’d call it Patchwork Geli Pulls :)
Haha, love it! Patchwork Geli Pulls it is! Thanks for the awesome idea! 🧩🎉
What a blast! Whaddaya call the rubbing tool you use? Thanks, Jackie
That’s called a baren - i have arthritis in my hands and it helps 🤗 I’ll add a link in the video description!

Hi Jackie, these are great. What type and brand of paper do you recommend using?
Thank you! I like to use the white sulphite (sulphate?) paper at Blick. It's cheap and handles the paint fairly well ❤️
@@jackieschomburgart thanks
Jackie
Do you use these as actual prints or you eventually tear them and make other collages
Hello dear artist , never be sorry for what you say 👍
With best wishes
You’re so sweet! 😊 I really appreciate that! 💖 Big hugs! 🤗💫

Inspiration is what I call your gelli-blockollage!
YES!! ❤️🤩🤩🤩
You are on to something big
Haha, I sure hope so! 😆 Thanks for the awesome support! 💖🙌
Reminds me of patchwork quilts.
I can see it! ❤️
I NEED those tiny rubber bands...where did you buy them? They make such a great pattern...and thank you for this process...LOVE how all the sheets turned out!
Thanks so much! I can't remember where I found them, but I'm sure you can find them on amazon ❤️
Great video, Jackie! Thank you for posting this unusual approach to collage. Question: were you mostly using copy paper when you weren’t using tissue paper? Or was it multi-media paper?
It’s called white sulphate paper from Blick :)
What will you do with them
Not sure yet. They could be cut up for other collages, framed as is, or anything in between ❤️
Hi! Are you using fluid fluorescent red ? Are all your paints from Golden Open and are they all fluid? / Monica from Sweden
Hej Monica! Yes, fluorescent red, but not from Golden. There is a US company called “nova color paints” that I order many of my paints from. They sell directly to artists so it ends up being less expensive than Golden, but Golden is also amazing paint ❤️ Nova paints are more of a blend of fluid paints and soft body paints.
I couldn't imagine what no cut collage would be! This definitely looks like some good fun! Awesome!!
Haha! I wasn’t sure what else to call it! 🤣🤣🤣
"Collagraph" might be an appropriate term 😊
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤
Yesss!! 🙌💖 Appreciate the support! You're awesome! 🎉👏
Tou may need to add Open medium to your paints for the fussy prints, like thevtiny rubberbands.
Great idea! ❤️🙌🏻🌈
Also i think I've seen Robyn McClendon do something like this. Very different style but similar technique.
Totally, Robyn’s style is amazing! 😍 It’s fun to explore similar techniques in different ways! 🎨
What about "patchwork printing"?
I can see it 🤗❤️🌈
Have you ever tried mixing in a drop of glycerine into your paints?
Just a drop. It will make it a bit more open, without the need to let it dry for a long time.
It's like how Jane Davies used glazing medium, but it doesn't dilute the paint and doesn't go sticky.
I have open paints, but and they work beautifully, but for some of your followers that don't have the chance or money to buy the opens, glycerine is a very cool medium!
I often use it, with acrylics and watercolour.
It's brilliant! And cheap!!
Thanks so much for sharing this - I’ve never tried it, but now I have to try it! ❤️❤️❤️
If you like a more exact process, there are things like linocut, which can still be done at home. 😊
Ooh, linocut sounds like a great option! 🎨 Thanks for the tip! 😊💡
I like the title you have.. no cut collage. It’s what made me stop and watch it. Love the commentary.
The more I say it, the more I like it too! ❤️ Happy holidays!
imprint collage
Thanks Jen! ❤️
I've been looking for celadon acrylics but can't find any. Liquitex does a Grey Green but it doesn't have the slight blue tinge to it. Can anyone recommend a brand?
Blick has a matte celadon and Golden has Titan green pale - not sure what shade you’re going for but I like those two 👍
@@jackieschomburgart Thank you!
New project idea: gelli printed tissue paper overlaid on a painting with gloss medium like in your moray recent video (1/6/25)
Oh yes, definitely a favorite technique of mine! Haven’t done it SUPER large scale though - hmm 🤔 It’s a great idea! ❤️
The word "Collage" comes from the French; "colle" means glue in French, so in effect, a collage is a composition created by gluing things down.
I would refer to this as a multi-layered monoprint composition. It's cool!
Multi-layered monoprint composition-love that! Thank you for the kind words! 😊🎨
@@jackieschomburgart You're welcome! I'm so glad to have found your channel. It's very inspiring.
I think "Patchwork" is also a great description of this type of printing. I think that's how @Susan Clifton describes it.
Thanks!
I call it patch work style gel.printing which is what I usually do in my on gel prints.
Ooh, I love that name for it! Your gel prints are always so cool! 😍🌟
@jackieschomburgart Oh wow! Thank you!
I would call it spontaneous collaging, I called it 😂
Haha, love it! Spontaneous collaging has a nice ring to it! 😂🎨
So much fun! And YES to yoga pants :) Off to check out landscape gel prints...
Elastic waistbands FOREVER! 🙌🏻🌈😂
I love that you don't clean your gelli plate. I don't and it gives some awesome random and eclectic prints.
I'm all for imperfections ❤
YES! 🌈🤩❤️
Call it mosaic collage? Magic collage?
I live in black jeans; my dress black jeans are the ones without paint on them. ;)
Haha! Same here! 🤣🤣🤣
Polyprint, poly-printing
❤️❤️❤️
I'd call it patchwork printing.
I can see it! ❤️
I have added your video to my playlist Gel printing - Patchwork / color block th-cam.com/play/PLl-w4JxzL7QvYpXOlxSA-2SjkqOGcdaVM.html - so that's how I think of the technique
❤️❤️❤️
in fashion design, thus is called color blocking.
Good call! ❤️
wow - love it! So inspiring and really have to let go and have fun! No cut and no tear! Drew Steinbrecher does a similar technique and creates a folded book from a single large sheet th-cam.com/video/oaNZIzqcklA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=K2MUouLAIlzhWTBY
Thanks for the link - I’ll check it out! ❤️
Not easy to do
Which part? The playing around and trying new things on a gelli plate is surprisingly simple. Pairing colors and items together in a way that is appealing to you can be more of a challenge, but it really depends on what your goal is. I'd encourage you to just play around with it and remove the pressure of trying to create something you'd like to hang on your walls - you're guaranteed to learn a lot about what you do and don't like and, who knows, you might even end up with something you love ❤️
I'd call it schizophrenia 😅
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
