20 Two Large Format Prints created on a 16"x 20" Gelli Plate with oil resists and metallic paints

- This is my early journey into large format printing on a gel plate (16x20). I've been gel printing for many years but never this large, until I went through a hard season losing my husband to brain injuries. I came across Fulton Sim at @artwhisperer88 who continually inspires many of us with his retro minimalist printmaking and sometimes, he's inspired from other modern art masters, as he demonstrates.
I'm inspired by Fulton, his art practice, his methodology, and his desire to educate the TH-cam audience about printmaking, but I'm going my own way of exploration with printmaking in an effort NOT TO COPY him. I hope I inspire you in some small way, too.
I am inspired by many other artists, too many to name personally here, but my art heroes continue to influence me daily: Judy Woods Art @judywoodsart and Pam Caughey @PamelaCaughey.
I'm still not 100% and without my best friend, I won't be for awhile. But if I can do this creative life, so can you. Remember, Dreams Never Die.

Love the oil resist texture on the second print especially. I love metallic paints, but then again I love anything sparkly - my mom used to say I was a crow in a former life!

The gold and purple is great. I get a little tense when you’re pulling the stencils off, so I fast-forward past that. Kind of like when you close your eyes during the scary parts of horror movies. Of course, I’m a grownup, so I don’t do that anymore. Hardly ever.

So glad you will be closer to your offspring. They will be a comfort ( and a distraction) to help you through. I'm also glad you have your artwork to help too. I don't know what I would have done in the last few years, without my artwork and photography ( and lots of bush expeditions looking for birds, wildflowers, bugs and the sunsets etc. 😁) especially with the lockdowns etc. I have been living in a caravan for the last 4 years, so it's been a help for me in that way also. I'm excited to watch and learn from your videos. I love how you have learned to control your ideas and create such nice prints. I only just discovered the gel printing by accident. I didn't really love it much until I saw your work. If you see this is there another good paper that isn't as expensive?

Love your prints 🥰. Have you thought of purchasing a larger brayer for this size gel plate? You can get a 10”, 8” or 6”
Thanks, Sharon, for your lovely comments and your suggestion. The 6" would be a good size, but for me, it's about navigating easily between stencils. Sometimes, the 2" is adequate, but I might have to invest. 🌿

Actually, Paula, I misunderstood your question. I used plastic subject dividers from school supplies in the beginning, but now, I use mylar sheets from Amazon. The subject dividers curl if left to soak too long. Hope this clarifies. 🌿🌿

New subscriber here. Really enjoyed your tutorial! Question: the opening scene with the oil resist: was that black acrylic paint put on with small squeeze bottle in a swirling pattern, then sprayed with a mist of water, then allowed to dry?
Hi Brenda, thanks for subscribing! That first layer was applied with a watercolor brush using paint mixed with a little Vaseline or baby oil and water. I use a small cup to mix my "oily parts" and then add that mixture to the pigment for the consistency I want. The watery vs. oily parts cause the paint to disperse or separate in spotty ways when applied to the plate, which is also a glycerin/oily surface. Yes, it's allowed to dry, and it takes a while, so be patient! Thanks for your question! Peace 🌿

One question that comes to my mind, what do you do with the final prints, the large ones?
Thank you for your question, @mandygoon. Currently, I have lots of flat files. Some prints are mounted to cradle boards and framed in contemporary floater frames. Some I cut up and use in collage greeting cards or collage on canvas. The large format prints are best stored flat, and when sold, are shipped rolled in a mailing tube. They can be framed under glass at the gallery for the potential collector's purchase. Hopefully, this answers your question. Peace 🌿

I don’t understand how to get the oil resist or black marks.
Hi DawnChristine, in a small plastic container or bathroom cup, mix a little fluid black paint with a few drops of baby oil & water. After you do this awhile, you'll learn the recipe you like. Use a brush and apply your design to a clean, dry gelli plate. Allow this layer to fully dry. Then go over it with colors of your choice and pull a print. The black marks you created with the resist will transfer along with your colors. 🌿❤️🕊🌿
What kind of oil resist do you use? Oil paint thinned down?
Ivy, I just use a small paper cup with water and a few drops of baby oil mixed in. Then I apply where I want it on the plate with a brush. Thanks for your question. 🌿

So what is an oil resist?
Hi Randy, This is a method for producing lacey effects in the paint that's transferred from the plate to the print. One can experiment with different ways to achieve this. I use a small cup & mix paint diluted w water and a few drops of baby oil. I have also used a mixture of small amounts of Vaseline & baby oil plus water applied to the plate 1st before rolling paint. The plate is made of glycerin & oils, so if you add watery paints with a paintbrush, allow it to dry, and then roll paint on the plate. This will produce the lace effects also because oils from the plate & water in the paints don't mix. Hope this helps. Peace 🌿
