  • PlayStation VR2 is the successor to the original PlayStation VR headset and is designed to work with the PlayStation 5 console. It features an improved resolution, wider field of view, and better tracking, as well as a new controller with enhanced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The headset also includes features like eye-tracking and foveated rendering for improved graphics and performance. On the other hand, the Meta Quest 2 is a standalone virtual reality headset that doesn't require a PC or console to operate. It features a high-resolution display, six degrees of freedom tracking, and a comfortable design. The Meta Quest 2 also includes hand-tracking and supports a wide range of games and applications from the Oculus Store.

    I think it's a HUGE bummer the PSVR2 isn't backwards compatible with original PSVR games. What do you think?

    • @parker1631
      @parker1631 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      I agree, but with the changes in the technology that were made to get such better results, I don't think there would be a way to make this headset emulate the old psvr in a way that would allow global back compat. The light ball tracking and headset mounted tracking cameras are like two different languages.
      However, it looks like the devs of some of the most successful psvr games are working on psvr 2 patches, which is the best we can hope for.

      Yea it does suck a little bit but the PSVR2 is amazing. I've been enjoying. I got the horizon bundle also. That game is different but it's great. The eye tracking is incredible. Never experienced anything like it before. Moss and moss book 2 were originally on psvr but the games now look even better on PSVR2. The tech is great. I think that's why it's not backwards compatible. The tech doesn t match up.

      I love the accessibility settings in the games. For instance I didn't know what vignettes are there for and now it helps me not to tire my eyes when turning, but in the Horizon you can choose to just switch everything off and just turn yourself, which feels completely natural in the game an it is great. Moving forward with the stick is absolutely perfect. No motion sickness anymore, also thanks to smooth fps in comparison with PS VR 1. That movement and slow fps there killed my playing on PS VR1 after few gameplay sessions, especially when turning the camera.

      Most will already have a PS5 and the psvr2 is only 150$ more than the quest 2, which is REALLY outdated.
      Games look like mobile games on the Quest. Let's not beat around the bush with excuses, the quest 2 native games are literally RUINING VR because they are incredibly ugly, way worse than psvr1, and developers are making games for the quest first because it's the biggest player base.

    Problem with Quest is it’s on a mobile chipset. Quest has really been holding VR back in terms of big experiences, not that it doesn’t have some neat stuff, but it’s just not capable of blockbuster games, without being tethered to a PC. PSVR2 will hopefully bring the AAA VR experiences back.

    • @joejoesoft
      @joejoesoft ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The problem is the video chipset. The Red Matter 2 devs (arguably the best looking game on the Q2) said the CPU performs surprisingly well. The GPU, however, has weak ventilation and is locked to a lower clock speed because of it. It's the weakest point for performance. The devs where able to double the resolution for the Pico4 port because of this and the increased FoV.
      Money is holding back AAA VR experiences. VR is a niche market with 20% the audience of a console like the PS4. Compare best selling big budget game Half-Life: Alyx to PS4s God of War. Alyx had sold over 2 million copies. GoW has sold almost 20 million. Drop the budget and you get well over 4 million copies for Beat Saber - across all VR platforms.

    • @wlot28
      @wlot28 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like the other guy said, the main problem is big developers not having enough monetary incentive to create great games for the Quest 2 that are optimized for the hardware and can run/look far better than anything indie devs can put out. Especially with the upcoming Q3 which reportedly has a x2 processing improvement in its SOC, by that point all we really need is good developers that can optimize games for the mobile chipset that don't look awful. There are already some pretty good examples of great graphics on the Q2 from games by talented developers like Red Matter 2. However right now there's too much risk, development cost and lack of sizable playerbase to make it worth it outside of being paid to develop a project by a publisher.

    • @Erik20766
      @Erik20766 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joejoesoft the GPU is almost always the bottleneck in gaming, so no surprise there. Thing is, if you want comparable performance to a beefy gaming PC or PS5 you need a lot of compute that 1: weighs a lot more (including cooling) than would be comfortable in a VR headset, and 2: uses so much power that the battery for it would make it even heavier, or make the battery life extremely short

    I hope PSVR2 does well! More than anything I just want *VR* to thrive, evolve, and grow as a technology. :)
    If I had a PS5, the lack of backwards compatibility would almost immediately deter me though. I know Sony and a lot of people claim that it's not possible, but PC VR has been accommodating for different headsets, controllers, etc this entire time...and I just don't think it's a truly valid excuse.
    The PSVR2 cost? I think it's very reasonable for the tech you are getting. It's by far the nicest "mainstream" VR headset as far as what's in it. It's expensive, yes...but you're getting a lot for the money & may push VR [as a whole] forward.
    It's almost not fair to compare the Quest 2 internal GPU to the PSVR2 (being ran by the PS5). The PS5 obviously has vastly more resources. It's interesting to see that MetalJesus feels like it's not a huge overall issue --I would have thought it'd be more-so. It comes at the price of being physically tethered though.
    I mainly use my Quest 2 (wirelessly) with my PC for VR, so it really is the best of both worlds. Doesn't have the OLED of the PSVR2 or the adaptive triggers, etc...but both setups have their tradeoffs (being wired for PSVR2 would likely drive me crazy).

    The thing I noticed with the PS VR2 is if it’s not tracking your hand or are you get stopped in the middle of the game because some weird thing displays on it’s usually because you don’t have enough light in the room. It makes a huge difference when you have lots of lights in the room, so turning on your ceiling lights or lamps, maybe opening a window that will all help.

      @@JamesCook76131 How does the "open ear" experience make it more immersive? By definition, it makes it less immersive. You can hear more of what is going on in the room you are in irl. How is it more immersive hearing a fan or AC going, doors opening and closing, washer or dryer going, other people talking in the room, etc. while in a game? It certainly is more convenient when you want to talk to others in the room or need to hear what's going on around you irl, but it is definitely less immersive. PSVR 2 does have a audio passthrough (sidetone) that allows you to hear through the headphones what is going on around you, but I agree the open ear speakers are better for this because with sidetone you also hear yourself in the headphones when you talk which is a bit weird/distracting.

    Great review! I don't have either system yet, but I'd say the slight disappointment in PSVR2 is justified. However, I think the part you don't give enough credit to is the fact that I think the playstation game development eco system is the PSVR2's biggest selling point. Gran Turismo is probably the prime example of that. I know when I owned first Oculus (my first and only VR headset) I was disappointed in all the games I couldn't play that were only available on the PSVR. I imagine that will be the same for PSVR2, especially as more developers make games exclusive to the graphical ability of the PSVR2. I don't like making promises part of a review, but in this case Playstation has a proven track record and a very large lead in graphical ability, so I think it's safe to assume that you're going to see a lot more games exclusive to the platform in the future. Well, and I suppose this is key, if the player base is there.

      Well, not exactly. PSVR 1 and 2 are not standalone devices. In their case, the console always does the computing. Ergo, the backwards compatibility solution is much simpler, since PS HMDs are image displays. The PS5 can play almost all PS4 games, we're talking over 4000 titles... excluding VR games of course. In contrast, Quest 1 and 2 are standalone hardware with their own display and computing capabilities. With different hardware.

      @@munton5150 I understand your point of view. My opinion - as a long time VR gamer - is that the standalone, zero cable solution is a huge advantage, not to mention the 3D video playback capability. Plus you can buy an MQ2 for $400 which is significantly cheaper than a PS5 and PSVR2 system. Not to mention PCVR, SteamVR without a cable (AirLink).
      Also when you want to to upgrade to a more serious device like the MQ3, you can sell the MQ2 and because it's standalone hardware, it's easy to sell. Facebook account hasn't been needed at all for Meta HMDs for a while now, a plain mail + password combo is enough.
      Make no mistake: The PSVR2 is a good HMD, but I feel the MQ2 offers a lot more at a lower price.

      For kids and casual gamers, Quest 2 is a good entry point Vr. But you will realize very soon that you need to spend a ton of money to upgrade it. PSVR 2 is perfect out of the box and is 2 generations of VR ahead of Quest 2. It looks like quest 2 is much cheaper, but it actually is not because of all the costly upgrades. Unless you don't have the money to play AAA VR games, you should not go for Quest 2 in the long run. And a gaming PC is much more expensive than a PS5 for playing AAA games with the same quality. PS5 + PSVR 2 is the best inexpensive AAA VR and nonVR solution for most gamers, except for some very young kids.

      What a load of garbage LOL.
      Firstly you can't upgrade the Quest 2 system, but it is compatible with gaming PCs and Steam.
      I bought VTOL for 20 bucks and Assetto Corsa for 10 bucks, AAA PC games are cheaper for VR than Quest's own store never mind Sony's high prices. Right now you can build a good 12th Gen 1Tb M2 Mini ITX PC, near silent, for not a lot more than a PS5.
      If you have a Mini PC and a Quest 2, you own TWO DIFFERENT VR systems*. 2 different stores, 2 different online communities and 6-7 games for the price of one Sony game like GT7 for 70 bucks.. I've been playing mine over 2 years, so this is not a fair time to be comparing them let alone claim the Quest 2 is for kids!
      The Quest 2 has 5* reviews on their store from Amateur Boxers and Amateur Golfers playing games in standalone for 1/4 price of a Playstation set up. Most of the reviews on Quest store seem to be from Adults keeping active. Your 'kiddy' user name now becomes ironic 🤦🏻

    I think the better way to look at pricing is that if you already have the PS5, you are getting a VR system for $550 that would otherwise probably cost more than $1,000. It's probably not the right thing if you are getting a PS5 just for PSVR2.
    Also of note is that one of the most prominent games you show in the pile of original PSVR games, No Man's Sky, has a free update for PSVR2.

Unfortunately, I've seen no direct comparisons between the Meta Quest Pro and PSVR 2, so I can't know for sure, but it seems like PSVR 2 quality still beats the Quest Pro for only $50 more now. That they lowered the price I think validates that it is at worst an equivalent experience for the same ~$1,000 price overall. Great review. I agree that new products should be backward compatible with previous titles. Just makes good business sense. Keep the ones that you have already, while luring in new ones. V/R could really be beneficial to many if companies and developers would get on board. I was thinking the other day, it would be awesome if Disney, Universal, and Six Flags got onboard and did Theme park games or exploration programs. Folks could use them to “almost” experience the actual parks before going, or for those of us that can’t afford to go. Those with disabilities preventing them from traveling would be able to experience the rides, shows, and atmosphere of the parks. Folks that can’t be out in crowds could experience those parks as well. So many more ways that v/r could be used and enjoyed by folks, as well as gaming.

The other is a powered device for only Playstation 5 users & a console style library. It seems like a massive bump from the first PS VR and a lot less hassle.
