A wild Kelsey appears 👍
Great to see her. 😊
Kelsey is going to be in the next video about the most obscure console she's ever played...and she KILLS it. It was hard to top...and it wasn't Wonderswan which is what most people would guess.
@@MetalJesusRocks Why is Wonderswan an obscure console? I think it has become very popular over the past 5 years or so.
It is likely outside of JP the most popular JP only console by today.
I mention Wonderswan cuz she's known for having a complete game collection, so people may assume. Instead she busts out some seriously obscure stuff. You'll see .
It's the R-Zone right? 😂
@@overlordalfredo its obscure because 99,9% of people doesnt know what a Wonderswan is. Just because you're a massive nerd it doesnt mean something suddenly become mainstream.
Tremendous episode! THANK YOU for including me mate 🎉❤
Thanks! You are the best 🤘
I need to go back to the UK!! Miss it so much after spending a month there during Fall and got to go some really good retro game stores and almost bought a GameCube there just because the GameCube games are so much cheaper than the US version of games which doesn’t make sense.
I’ll be subscribing!
Is your Secret of Mana display an original or repro?
Noticed it in the back
@@burnblaze3437 Unsure tbh. There were only 50 printed though
Kelsey with the Xenoblade faceplates on her 3DS. Love it. I need to get one of those.
Me too. *envy*
That Faceplate is #Respect
I never knew they made faceplates 😅
Huge fan of your sound design work!
GBA 4 life! 🤜🏻 💥 🤛🏾
that fist bump emoji combo is epic 😁
Translate 🤣 Get 4 Lives
Hell yeah! 🙌
I get it people are nostalgic for the GBA but the 3DS is the better console easily and I have both
@@bingevintage8124 3DS is ok I still havent found a game that makes it a banger
Kelsey is SO RIGHT about the 3DS being difficult to repair. I was in a deep depression for months trying to re-shell a 3DS on my own. Never, ever, ever again. Doing a shell swap on a 3DS might be one of the worst forms of torture
I agree with you. I've done a few shell swaps and also just top screen repairs (UGH!) It's goddamn infuriating.
Stuffing 4 fucking cables through that little hinge is torture.
GBA..NO Wait!...3DS...Uh, hold on...GBA...UGH!!! --- Yup, definitely 3DS...And that's my final answer, GBA 😁
🤣😂🤣 Classic - I can't decide either!!!
❤
What I like about the DS and 3ds is that the layout seems to pay a tribute to Nintendo’s original lcd Game & Watch series. I had Donkey Kong and Greenhouse.
Not to mention the almost perfect home menu popularized by the Wii, they've stuck with it and I love it.
Nice to see Kelsey again. :)
More to come!
"there is nothing quite like using the real hardware". I couldn't agree more!
The magic of experiencing a console for the first time is always one of my favourite moments in gaming. In the past couple months I've gotten a modded IPS screen Wonderswan Colour, the Evercade family of consoles, an original PlayStation and a Master System. All excellent systems that offer tremendous fun and replayability 😁
so glad macho nacho and the others get on too! always my first gaming TH-cam channel! thanks for the content love you guys!
great video! id love more like this with inputs from the crew.
There will be. Stay tuned. 👍
I love seeing the whole crew give their opinions! My silver clamshell gba with backlit screen was a holiday essential growing up!
I agree that it’s gotta be the New XL model specifically - the introduction of the nub and the improved 3D are essential!
Agreed. 👍👍
plus once it is moded, gba is natively played on it I think
@@olevet75 You can run GBA titles natively on any 3DS unit after installing custom firmware. Simply use a Virtual Console injector to add individual ROMs as titles on the home screen or run ROMs dumped onto the SD card through the open_agb_firm application, both run the games just like they would be running on an original DS or DS Lite since the 3DS still has the same hardware on its board as its parent system.
@@kodybuffettwilsonI don’t recommend doing it this way as your 3DS has a limit of 300 icons, and badges count as an icons too. This is very easy to obtain when you consider the large library of GBA games.
I recommend using RetroArch or mGBA instead. May not look as pretty but it will let you store more GBA games.
Amazing to see all of you in one single video!
Great question, thanks for this one. Also, Kelsey rules!! ⚡
Glad you enjoyed it!
The NEW 3DS XL is my baby...still play it from time to time...9 plus yrs and going 💜☝🏾🫡
Plus the modding scene is even crazier than before you can mod it to play virtual boy games with stereoscopic 3d very worth to check out
@@spicypepperz Have you seen the analog controls hack and motion control for Mario64(DS) and Metroid Prime Hunters(DS) that you can do with the 3DS and Twilight Menu!?!?! It's AMAZING. That and the Virtual Boy ability is what puts the 3DS over the top for me
@@nickylazer yes I totally forgot to mention that, I I've fallen in love with the 3ds again, I can't wait for pretendo to have more online servers aswell, so seems like there's always more to look forward too with this double stacked pancake lol
I have a new 3ds xl mint condition.
I only have one game mario kart.
That’s all I need 😂

I wish Kelsey still made videos, she made some really unique and cool gaming videos years ago - stuff that not many or anyone else was talking about like the bike video. Even if it’s just the games she likes she did her research and knows a lot about games that I enjoy hearing from her. I know the stores probably keep her busy but glad to see her back on MJR.
She's on the MinnMax podcast from time to time and she's a great addition to the crew, plus it's just a great show, I really recommend it if you aren't already familiar with it
Love your videos!! Always make me smile, cheers from Mexico my man!!
You rock!
This is a great question. GBA games I love for the fact you can play them on your 40-50 inch tv with the Gamecube player. What a way to play games with friends, Gameboy advance to Gamecube link was very interesting with Zelda: Four Swords and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles to play co-op. It even works with the e-reader!
Yet I'd still pick the 3DS. The amount of incredible, exclusive games on this console, with access to all DS games, two screens with that genius clam-shell design. Even if you emulate 3ds and ds games on your pc, it doesn't feel the same at all. You're right: when you hold the 3DS, it feels like magic. P.S. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby are incredible remakes that should cost a lot more right now.
Honesty the gameboy player is the main thing I'd say that would be a deciding factor on why you would choose the gba cause you can get almost every gba game for the 3ds and plus super Nintendo and virtual boy! But playing gba games on the player is very satisfying, I have both so I enjoy both haha
Gotta love the Kelsey - nice to hear from her again - same old quality evaluations. Thanks for that!
Love the Wonderswan in the background for Kelsey!
For me the is the 3DS, it made come back to the handheld gaming world again, Fire emblem Awakening, Zelda Between Worlds, Pokemon Y, Mario 3D Land, are some of the games that I really enjoyed in my adulthood.
Kelsey! My fave of MJ's crew. Shout out to the Gebs too from the UK
3DS all the way baby that little thing has helped me through a lot growing up and i still go back to it till this day from pokemon to fire emblem i love it and will always have a special place in my heart (shoutout to its big sister the NDS) nothing against the GBA i grew up with it too but besides a few games i dont have that much memories
Kinsey wins with that background and camera quality!! Oh AND the shirt!!

@@FortuneFinders why’d you spell it like that?
Interesting video, I had fun watching it, ty. As a 42 years-old gamer, I grew up with NES, SNES, Genesis, then like many simply moved on to PS1, N64, PS2, etc.
When it came to handheld systems at the time (in the 90s, up to the 2000s) I was never truly interested (the necessity of new batteries was a deal breaker _and_ also the concept of playing games on such small screens just couldn't compute in my head; additionally, whenever I was outside of my home for whatever reason I never actually thought of the idea of playing games while going out). The only actual handheld system I ever played only because one of my friends lent it to me for 2 or 3 days, was the Sega Game Gear, with Sonic and Mortal Kombat. I actually liked it, and even briefly desired to have one, but I very soon forgot about it as soon as I just returned playing and renting games for my SNES.
So yeah, I'm part of your age group guys, 40s, but never really thought much about handheld. And this video let me discover a bit more about them. They were interesting systems for sure. I can understand why some people grew up on them or really just played them a lot. It's true though, Nintendo truly dominated the handheld market (and still do today with the Switch). But I'll give some credits to the Game Gear, because it was the _only_ handheld system I ever considered asking my mom to buy, ever (albeit only very briefly). If I would have had to choose at the time, between say... the original GameBoy, or the Game Gear, it would have been the Game Gear 100%.
Metal Jesus may be the most tender man on the internet.
Free hugs. 👍
Can I just say how great it is to see everyone I adore on this channel together on one video! It's so wholesome and it makes me happy.
One big thing I love about the 3DS is the big variety of non-game applications. Korg's DSN-12 is an amazing music-making app. Also, Colors! 3D is a very fun art painting program. There is also the photography feature of the 3DS itself.
Both the DS and 3DS both have decent audio hardware, you could also get the amazing Korg DS-10 for the DS, the 3DS has both a decent proprietary DSP (CEVA TeakLite II) with synth abilities and the GBA/GB audio hardware (the CSND block), giving it an extra 24 channels of PSG, giving the ability to produce those loverly old school synth sounds, the DS can also do MIDI, as for which has better audio, I'm not sure, the DS has some good soundtracks that have more in common with the SNES audio, so more old school, the 3DS is closer to the Gamecubes audio abilities, with the added ability of the beefed up GBA PSG channels, so I guess the 3DS takes it, I'd have to listen to some soundtracks to really know which has the best soundtracks on its library of games.
great topic, love seeing Kelsey again
Kelsey so good to see her. Great video as always.
I love seeing all the various versions of the two systems! Big shout out to all who helped make this video!
Kelsey is the final boss of the wonderswan
Crystal clear!
What a fun video, truly enjoyed it.
I have to agree with Reggie 100%. So many fond memories, but also the fact that the GBA can run both GB and GBC, which has so many games to play!!
Now, if I had to choose 1 while stranded on a deserted island… New 3DS XL, no contest. Mod it, and you can play all of the above and more!
Great to see Kelsey again... How lovely did she look!!
been missing Kelsey, but oh man, 8 years feels like yesterday when watching the good ol' Kelsey here in MJR.
feeling a bit sad that Kelsey is getting older.
Nothing to be sad about. We're ALL getting older...which is kinda the point, right? Better than the alternative. 😉
She doesn’t really look older. 🤷♂️
Think she looks better than ever personally.
For me. GBA hands down
Metroid fusion
Pokemon emerald
Legend of Zelda minish cap
Sonic advance
Advance Wars
Db advanced adventure
Castlevania aria of sorrow
Kirby nightmare in dream land
Metroid zero mission
Super Mario advance 4
Spyro season of flame
Golden sun.
Don’t get me wrong 3ds is cool but 1. To me it was a gimmick console that died out very quickly and 2. As soon as Kinsey mentioned region lock I firmly locked down my vote on the gba it’s BC with gb & gbc and is region free.
Really tough question. Both have fantastic libraries and really pushed hardware limitation for their eras. I'd have to give the slight edge to the 3DS as that console allowed for indie games to find a good niche on Switch, starting with Shovel Knight and the Steamworld Series.
One thing not mentioned is battery life. My GBA SP still turns on after sitting idle for years. My 3DS will last a week if I’m lucky.
My (hardly used) DS from 2006 was in storage for 15 years and turned on without the need to charge.
MH4U was the game that finally made me understand and get really into Monster Hunter. I tried the demo hunting a Jaggi or something and the whole “Hunting” concept sunk in. I had tried the demo😊 for Monster Hunter 3 years before but I just didn’t understand the controls or the concept. It really is a hunt and taking down the first monster was really satisfying along with the looting/harvesting mechanics and the way the maps are split up into different sections. I played more MH4U and Monster Hunter Generations on the 3DS more than any other game. The New 3DS and New 3DS XL with the 2nd analog nub to control makes it the best 3DS to play the MH games on.
My favorite overall is the Gameboy Advance for the nostalgia and the way that "16 bit" style (I know GBA is 32- just talking about the art style of 16 bit) games hold up to me makes them timeless. It’s not just nostalgia there’s a huge library and games and ways to play them are still very accessible. Currently 3DS are pretty expensive and it hasn’t been long enough for me to really have nostalgia for it. There’s loads of 3DS games I love and I love that you can play DS games on it as well but GBA wins by a notch. Both fantastic systems and I have a DS Lite, GBA, and an Anbernic device which I can play GBA games on BUT I don’t have a 3DS currently so out of the Nintendo handhelds the 3DS is the one I am most looking forward to revisiting down the road. I just wish they still had the official eshop still online. ALSO Nintendo should really bring back that sweet eSHOP and home menu music like they had for 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and even GameCube.
What I have a negative thing about GBA, is you can’t play it in the dark, I just wanna chill and play at night after a long day.
You can mod it to add a backlight pretty easily
you can with the sp lol
been modding my 3ds lately and my gosh it just opened me up to all of the games i missed over the years. i love the gba but its gotta be the 3ds
Hacked 3DS. So you can install all those GBA roms and take it on-the-go :O Don't 🔫 me!
This. It's no contest really... The 3DS does it _all,_ literally!
I jailbroke my 3ds a couple weeks ago and filled my 64 gb card with tons of games from GBC to 3DS. This is definitely the way to go
@@R3TR0R4V3 With a large SD card, I use it more than the Switch. It's INSANE!
@@WeeMatt33 Right?! I spent hourssss setting it up but there's literal YEARS worth of content on my 3DS now!
So the GBA was actually my first handheld console as a kid but I would still go with the 3DS. I spent more time on it and loved both the online features and streetpass (although I didn’t use streetpass as much as I could have when I was younger). The 3DS got me through late middle school and high school and I have fond memories of trading items online over Tumblr for Animal Crossing New Leaf. And I still enjoy getting street passes today at local gaming meetups and any conventions I go to ❤
GBA SP is the Greatest hand held of all time.
Such an amazing episode!!! A tough question indeed 😮😮😮
I still use a SP to
i'm with Kelsey, the rpgs on 3ds just made it for me, another rpg alongside the ones she said that i want to mention is dragon quest 8, such an awesome game i still go back and play it, i also still collect 3ds and ds games
3DS just has the edge but the Gameboy Advance is awesome too !
For me, I'm really split because both had really good RPG bangers. Like I loved playing Sapphire on my GBA as a kid, but once they got the 3DS remake, I felt super nostalgic. I guess for me it really depends on the style of game you want to play.
Trick question. The answer is the Atari Lynx!
THIS 👆 😜
🤮
Being someone who grew up with the GBA / GameCube generation, I can easily say I adore the GBA miles ahead of the 3DS. I'm certainly nostalgic for both consoles and they're both fantastic but I gotta be honest, the GBA's modding scene is so fun to experiment with. I've been doing custom GBAs for my buddies (and myself) for maybe a year now and it's so fun seeing all the different parts you can pick out n work with. Not sure if the 3DS has anything even remotely close when it comes to hardware mods. Plus, I'd say the original GBA is probably the most comfortable handheld system I've used (aside from the Steam Deck). Awesome content as always, keep it up king. 🤘
Probably my two favorite handheld consoles of all time! GBA was a huge part of my early childhood and 3DS was big when I was in high school, so I've got a lot of nostalgia for both of them. That said, it has to be the 3DS for me. That console still brings me so much joy and became something so special by the end of its lifespan. Still love playing CTGP7 on it regularly!
This is such a hard decision. Personally I have to go towards the 3DS though just due to having the console first, and DS in general. The GBA really is through my exposure with the Gameboy SP, as well as the Gameboy Player on Gamecube, but this was after I got a DS/3DS. Both have some incredible games, and overall is a very tough question. No wrong answers in my eyes. This was such an exceptional episode with some amazing guests. Fantastic watch from beginning to end. Have a great day everyone.
Gem repping the UK! Love these vids of everyones thoughts
Super Mario 3d Land was a real stand out moment to me where on one of the levels where you are free falling to grab the coins the 3D actually made it easier to gauge their actual depth or closeness to better grab them. Now, it's an impossible question to answer but with unlocking the 3DS and playing GBA games natively is pretty amazing. Very similar to the Wii U being able to natively play GC games natively when jail broken. I will eternally love the GBA SP but I have to agree that the New XL 3DS or 2DS take the cake for me.
Kelsey!! Always happy to hear her thoughts especially as an indie shop owner.
Great Video! My favorite is the 3DS. Probably just because i've played it the most since i bought it at launch and i dident get GBA as a kid, because games were expensive and i got alot of action men at the year of launch instead.
Will you do a roomtour again you think? I really love those!
Its good to see MetalJesus and friends from different parts of the world unite for one common purpose. Its kinda like the 90s cartoon Captain planet and the planeters fusing their ring powers together.
For me i have to go with the gba. It was the first hand held that i owned as a kid and wasn't a friends. Same as some of the other people in this video it was my first time playing SNES classics including yoshi Island which i love so much even today. And confirmed my love as Wario being my favorite when i played Wario land 4! Great question!❤
My line up would DS Lite due to the DS library & GBA Library. The GBA SP. Then the 3DS. I always felt the 3DS didn’t have the best library of games, all the great 3rd party games became super expensive.
The GBA has some of my favorite series that remain untouched and true to form. I loved that it had some incredible titles that pushed the hardware! Max Payne, Sonic Advanced Series, Zelda Minish Cap, Golden Sun, & so much more!
The DS has to be one of my favorite game libraries. Resident Evil 1, Dementium 1 & 2, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon Heart Gold & BW2, The Asphalt Series, Ape Astronauts, the Dsi Ware games that you can’t get anymore that were good like Asphalt Legends!
The 3DS main nintendo games are just fine, Resident Evil Revelations set a tone of what I thought what kind of games we would get but never did, it was the start of 3D pokemon & it was the series peak and downfall in my opinion. The 3DS has more hidden gems than great AA titles. I think it has the weakest library for me personally.
This one IS hard. They are two of the highest-regarded handhelds that constantly get put against each other. I was a kid...like...10 when the GBA launched in 2001. I was fortunate enough to receive an original GBA for my birthday in 2002, and I got a GBA SP around the time that it launched as well. My favorite game of all time at that point and still today is Super Mario World - and to play that on the GBA was absolutely magical. Getting a handheld version of Mario Kart in the form of Super Circuit, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, etc. Then there's of course the Game Boy Player for the GameCube. Playing GB/GBA games on the go OR on the TV was truly something magical for that time. OH...and Nintendo Power mags of that time were just the absolute cherry on the top for any Nintendo fan/gamer during that timeframe. RIP Nintendo Power!
However, the 3DS is an absolute juggernaut in terms of the presence of first party Nintendo IP's and all sorts of new IP's as well. There's so much variety on the 3DS that it seems that it'd almost be impossible to not find something that interests you. I got a 3DS in its first year, but not right at launch, and I've had easily 10 or more different 3DS models and special editions over the last 13 or so years. I really liked that the 3DS saw very necessary and welcome improvements throughout its lifespan, which the GBA did as well between the original model, the SP-001 and SP-101, then the GB Micro.
The biggest thing for me is that the GBA offered us Super Nintendo caliber games at a time during the GameCube, which was a major difference between home console and handheld experiences. Whereas the 3DS gave us Wii U caliber games at the time that the Wii U was relevant, so the gap between home console and handheld experience was pretty minimal (albeit with the 3DS screen's terrible resolution). While I thoroughly enjoyed what the GBA had to offer at it's time, and still revisit it quite often via my Analogue Pocket and my IPS modded AGB-001 and AGS-001, I tend to gravitate more towards the experiences that the 3DS has to offer to me. I'll play a GB/GBC/GBA game on my Analogue Pocket for a short few-minute gaming session where I don't have a whole lot of time to dedicate, but I'll pull out my 3DS most often when I have a more significant amount of time to devote to something deeper.
You can't go wrong with either. Both are super special in their own ways.
Had an OG GBA. Hated it so much I traded it in and the 5 games I purchased. Absolutely one of the worst screens to play games on unless you were under exact ideal lighting conditions. It wasn’t until the SP came out that I went back and started playing it.
@@mkendall8393 That's definitely fair enough. I played my original GBA laying in my bed with a lamp behind me, or sat on the couch with a lamp next to me, or in a well-lit room otherwise. I had a worm light for the Game Boy Color, but I can't remember if it worked on my GBA or not. Something tells me that it didn't...I can't remember. But yah, getting an SP was a world-of-difference and really made playing GBA games so much more accessible and enjoyable!
The key is exactly how huge the improvements in the 3D are, from the original, with smaller screens, to the New 3DS XL. I bought the original at launch and I could never play it more than 20/30 minutes, due to the eye strain caused by the 3D effect. Last year I purchased and restored a broken New 3DS XL (used and functioning ones are still so expensive, here in Europe!) and the difference is night and day. So much better, now I love playing the games with the 3D effect turned on.
Unfortunately I skipped the whole GB Color/GB Advance (and SP) generation and, after the original Game Boy, I got a DS Lite (as well as the PSP, which is my all time favourite, due to the library of games and time of its release, when I had the most free time, to play) and the DSi, which I sold when I bought the first 3DS, but one day I'll eventually put my hands on a GBA... although I recently restored my cousin's DS Lite and she decided to give it to me, so I might simply play the GBA games on it, haha😅
I’m digging this video format! For me it’s the GBA purely so to nostalgia. That transports me straight back to being a young kid trying to find good lighting and enjoying it!
It's going to have to be the 3DS for me! Insane library, plus if you install CFW you can run every GBA game natively
Right. It seems like it would be a no-brainer since the 3DS has the ultimate backwards compatibility and more once hacked with CFW.
3DS for me. Got that back when i worked on Carnival Cruise line and that thing never left my side after buying it at launch. That device has traveled the world with me.
I really respect the 3ds but have to go for gba. I grew up with a game boy pocket, color, and gba, so all my favorite games are on it, or playable on it. I didnt get a 3ds until I was an adult and I just never made time to play it. I'm sure its games are amazing, and the library looks fantastic, but I just love the pixel art on the gba and the fact it was the last system to use maskrom carts. Those carts will be good for the next 100 years, unlike the flash based carts that came after. Of course, it ultimately comes down to nostalgia, and everything else is just justification. If I were to objectively look at the libraries of both consoles, I think just because it was such an advanced system with polygonal 3d (disregarding the 3d screen) the games on it could be creative and fun in whole new and deeper ways, and a kid would probably cboose the 3ds as the better console side by side. However, for each one in its respective era, I still love gba the most. I imagine the 3ds has an amazing library of games, and wish I'd had that experience as a child, but I didn't so 😅
The true winner would be the DS Lite if it was an option. Totally agree with Kinsey (Sorry if spelled wrong)
I also agree with MJ about the New 3DS XL and the exp you can only get with that hardware on some games. There aren't a whole lot but the ones that have it and do it right are an exp unlike any other anywhere EVER. Awesome Vid Jason!!
I think it goes to say a lot about both consoles being incredible is the flip-flopping people were doing.
Personally, my 3DS family (all 4 of them) have been used so, so, so much over the years it's likely my most used handheld and it's got the most special place in my heart.
I still love my GBA and the SP though, the 3DS family just takes the cake this time (and eats it, too!)
Oh I love both but the New 3ds XL is probably the best portable device I have ever held, it is ultra comfortable and feels so good. The games are phenomenal, Gba did not have Animal Crossing which is a huge factor in my decision, fell in love with the series on the DS upward. Great video, Great cast, all of you rock.
Damn that's tough, but I'm going with the GBA. I have more fond memories with the GBA, because it was my first handheld console. Some of the first games I played on it were Metroid Fusion, Kirby Nightmare in Dream Land, and Pokemon Ruby.
So many people I was eager to see again! Kinsey and Kelsey! And for me, ti's the 3DS. I love the GBA, but I didn't own one until I bought the DS LIte, and i was mostly playing DS games, but I owned and 3DS since launch, enventually upgraded to the New 3DS XL, and I was in the university at the time and I had a 4 hour commute everyday, so I played the hell out of my 3DS
I subscribed after Metal Jesus said exactly what I felt about the 3DS. Fucking LOVE my Nintendo 3DS XL consoles. That handheld is underrated due to how flexible it actually is when one stops to think about it. One love for the 3DS!
The 3DS was a very exciting time for me. I still come back to it today. I recently started a new save file for Animal Crossing New Leaf in 2024 and I'm so enamored. Like I was 10+ years ago. Such a great console.
It would be fun to have new I Hate U video’s !
Love your content continue the great work !
I did most of my GBA gaming on the Micro and Game cube expansion port. It will always hold a huge amount of nostalgia for me. I definitely put more miles on my new 3DS XL in the end though.
MATE THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR FOR THE PAST 20 DAY OMG
I love that Kelsey had Return to Popolocrois in her little feature of RPG games for 3DS. It's one of my favorites, a sleeper hit.
Side note though. If you can install custom firmware on your 3DS that system can do it all. End of discussion
I enjoyed 3DS 100% but my heart is for the GBA SP. Sorta simpler and just played many hours in younger years where things hit harder. 3D was very cool but wasn’t 100%. Good episode! MJR gots cool friends huh?!
I didn’t get my 3DS until 2017 as I focusing playing my games on home consoles. Kind of late as the AAA games like Kid Icarus going up for prices at that time, but I really wanted VC of their library in GameBoy, GBC, & GG. Thank God I managed to buy them in e-shop before it closed down
GBA is still my favorite as I fond memories way back. Games like Mario & Luigi rpg, Mario Golf, Sega Arcade Gallery living up my day.
I love the GBA SP. I got it when it first came out and I still play it to this day.
3ds for its modding capabilities / pretendo servers implicated progression to backup servers for online play / and being able to play GBA titles on 3ds.
It’s Friday baby!!
& that means a NEW MJR upload 😁

Edit: I’d have to go with the NEW 3DS XL just because of the massive amount of good games on that system & I’m not even talking about DS games, just 3DS
If you include OG DS it’s a TKO❤
Love my 3DS, but extra points to GBA with the Gameboy Player for playing games on the big screen or taking them on the go. Basically the original Nintendo Switch! Great episode, MJR crew! 🤘
I have both. This way, one can play almost every portable released for Nintendo consoles excepting games released for the Switch or the Virtual Boy (if you count it as portable... I don't). My favourite is still the 3DS, but the GBA has a few experiences I generally prefer because of how simplicity helps some games shine better.
YAY KELSEY 🎉 I miss her channel and hearing her on the Game Blitz/Video Game History podcasts.
I am going to say 3DS without having watched the video yet because I have an agenda!
You can make music on the 3DS with Noise Commander, the Korg apps, Nitro Tracker and all music apps available for the DS.
The GBA has Stepper going for it though.
There is is guy on TH-cam who is building a neat 3D world designer for the GBA as well!
Homebrew rocks, not only Metal Jesus :D
What's cool is the 3ds can run Gba games natively since it has the Gba cpu inside of it.
You only need to install a custom firmware to enabled it.
Weird.. I love 16 bit games the most to play. But! The 3ds is my (all time) favorite Nintendo handheld ever made. I actually use the 3d function in newer model, and the tech is incredible to interact with. Truly stunning. So odd most don't use 3d effect, I'l lnever understand it. Awesome video!
I have all 3ds models but the New 2DS. It was the first handheld console I got and the first one I started to collect. Not because I'm a gen z, but because at the time of GBA I was broke and couldn't afford to have more than one console, and having to choose, I ended up staying only on PC. That doesn't mean I haven't played GBA games, thanks to emulation I was able to play tons of games I still love from the system.
Today I'm hunting a good GBA to add to my collection. Nothing is like playing on the original hardware.
I love the GBA library, but as someone who never owned a GBA and I play my GBA games on my DS lite, 3DS can do everything the GBA can do and so much more! Being backwards compatible with DS games is amazing, so I’m surprised some in this video say the DS was better when 3DS is just a DS but better 😅, modding a 3DS allows emulation of tons of stuff, custom themes, and homebrew apps like the Hshop which is a substitute for the now closed Eshop, and the 3DS can natively run GBA games (no emulation required)
Overall I’m surprised but also not surprised by the responses in this video cuz we all have our nostalgia so it makes sense for some of y’all to say GBA but for me, a 24 y/o who had a 3DS and later a 3DS XL which is the one I modded and still use to this day a decent amount, 3DS is my easy pick!! 🤙🤙🤙
Whoa! Good to see Tito on the MJR channel. His modding channel is second to none.
For me it’s the GBA. When the SP first came out Friends and I were doing lots of international travel together. We all bought the SP before a trip to Japan in 2003. Playing hours of Mario Kart linked games between friends was the best.
What a great episode! Monster hunter games on the 3ds....wow!!🤗🤗🤗Thank you!👍👍👍
Completely agree. While there are many GBA games that I absolutely love (and the GBA SP still has one of the best form factors of any handheld ever), the new 3ds just has so many great games, along with being able to play DS and virtual console games. And let's not forget, it's an incredible system once modded.
That is really tough and I feel bad for the console I didn’t pick. So I missed the gba during its release and only picked one up several years ago along with a gbc and many other consoles. I love it to death and it has tons of great games.
However, I think I’m on team 3DS here, specifically the new 3DS xl. The 3D tracking is amazing and there’s the option of the DS library as well.
I do have a regular and xl 3DS closer to launch that aren’t working and I agree they’re awful to work on.
At this point I’d rather play gb/gbc/gba games on my Miyoo mini emulator or GameCube player, then save DS/3ds for the real hardware. 👍
Gebs!!! 🔥
BOTH! 😁 👍
nope, you have to pick one. That's the rules. 😁
Thanks to Kinsey for pointing out the GBA backwards compatibility! I found myself holding onto my original Gameboy game collection thanks to the GBA because I could still play my old games!
