    LOL to the people asking questions such as if you can use it as a desktop, if it can go on the internet, or attach a mouse and keyboard. It is a goddamn PC in a small case, get over it, so anything that you can do on a desktop PC or a laptop you can do that here as well, becasue it's a PC like any other PC, wether you use it with Windows or Steam OS Linux you can just do everything (from wathing porn to editing office documents or using skype) because it is just a plain old PC in a small case.

      Graphic Default LOL well, if you can find cracked games for Windows or Linux, than yes :-) But it's always good to buy originals in order to compensate the developers who make a living spending so much time and resources to make our favourite games.

    So, it costs more than a traditional console, it's slower than Windows, and you can't play all Steam games on it? Sounds like a winner.

    • @rileyrattray
      @rileyrattray 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you consider that PC's are not going to be obsolete anytime soon, you can upgrade the ram, Windows 7 can be installed and THEN all PC triple A games can be installed onto this. Out of the box, this thing exactly wow but you can change that. Sorry if this came over as a 'PCMASTERRACE F UR MUM M8 BOI' but this machine is really convenient and seeing this got on my nerves. Have a great day now.

    After using my steam controller for a couple days, I'm hooked on it - the guy probably didn't have a lot of time to devote to screwing around the controller and couldn't get the hang of it.
    The benchmarks are disappointing, but not nearly as bad as this guy is making it sound. Did he try to say "five to 10 times slower" while also saying "10% to 5% slower"? Brain fart maybe?
    The performance hit shouldn't be there, but I would deal with it so I don't have to deal with Windows.

      +Brian Kamras I concur. If nothing else he should list all the things you DON'T have to deal with because it's linux. It's also not a console so you don't have to deal with crappy graphics and the inability to upgrade without buying a new machine. Also, YOU CAN USE ANY CONTROLLER OR HEADSET YOU WANT AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPEND ANOTHER $200!
      I might be a little bit biased. I plugged my gaming comp into my TV and hooked up a wireless Xbox controller almost 10 years ago to play games on steam. It's too bad Hawken died. So much better than call of duty and my console only roommate agrees. Also, Skyrim + Mods with a controller. Consoles can suck it.

      +Jason Sprouse But you cant play new titles? IDK about you, but for me, If I cant play the games I want to play - I think that is a huge thumbs down.
      And you cant upgrade the GPU, so this is virtually no different than a console if you cant upgrade gaming performance.
      I am a console gamer - but ONLY because it is more convenient for me to play on my couch. This would give me the value of being able to play on couch as well as have access to PC exclusives through steam, but IDK if that would be worth sacrificing the ability to play new titles but still have to spend more than I would on a console system.
      Sounds like personal preference to me.

      I went for an xb1. In terms of a console though, I'd say the steam machine is a better system than the other current consoles.

      +Joseph Kiloh The GPU and Linux support are the issues with this. You still get a huge library, pretty decently strong machine for the size and design, and the option for keyboard and mouse across every game published for it.

    Friend bought one of these tonight (Alienware Steam Machine ASM100-6980BLK) and asked me to help him set it up since I've already built my own PCs. Steam setup was easy however you will need someone to help you run Windows if your not tech savvy. Unfortunately, the SteamOS library is limited. I have over 200 games in my Steam library and only about 50 of those were compatible with the SteamOS.
    As mentioned in the review your stuck with a 2 GB 860m gpu that cannot be upgraded which is a major concern.
    As far as performance, I was expecting the machine to run quite well. Not max out Crysis 3 well but run stable. Downloaded Spec Ops: The Line and it would barely run without having lots of frame rate issues during the single player campaign. It should be able to run an older game like that without any issues considering the specs are at or above recommended setting requirements. He may have gotten a bad system but it was enough for him to return it and I can't blame him. Odds are I will just build him a PC for just slightly more than the cost of the steam machine.

    Questions.
    1. Can I use other controllers? I use an Xbox controller when I play on my PC when the game allows it.
    2. Can I still use a mouse and a keyboard? Like you said the Steam controller doesn't have the same feel.
    3. Does it connect through WiFi or just through internet cable? I saw a slot for an internet cable so I'm not sure if it also connects through WiFi.
    4. Would I be able to use mods? I'll bet that I can but you can never be too careful.

      +Moustache Man On the Steam OS, Linux? If you're forced to install Windows for half the games you've negated the whole idea of what they're trying to do. You may as well have a regular ITX built so you have no such limitations..

      Guess your right.

    • @davideverett2
      @davideverett2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Patrick Hill You hit the button on the head when you said Windows games. Steam OS doesn't use Windows it's a Linux based OS. I'm not 100% sure what limitations there are but if someone wants to load Windows onto it instead of the Steam OS while that can be done doing so would be completely negating the point of these Steam boxes which is to offer weekend gamers a hassle free console style PC gaming alternative. The idea of offering PC style gaming in a console type box could succeed but it won't do while the companies controlling PC game releases are fragmented like they are. Yes you can play a game on Origin such as Battlefield via Steam but once you move to there Steam boxes Linux based OS won't that change? Unless there's something going on that I do not know about (which is quite possible) yes.

    Can any human observe a 5 or 10% difference in frame rate? How many TVs can display these high frame rates anyway? In short, of what relevance to the real world are any of these benchmarks?

    • @Stephen.Bingham
      @Stephen.Bingham 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cynical Human I accept that, in ideal circumstances and for certain types of image, a typical human would be able to tell the difference between a 40 fps and a 60 fps video. However, that is not what we are talking about here - we are talking about a 5 or 10% difference in frame rate (a 5-10 times smaller difference). Although it is true that the interfaces of modern TVs can accept a 60 fps data stream, the actual switching speed of the pixels is usually slower than this - they do not switch on and off instantaneously.

    • @Stephen.Bingham
      @Stephen.Bingham 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Cynical Human, if you can tell the difference between 40 fps and 42 fps (a 5% difference) or between 40 fps and 44 fps (a 10% difference) then you clearly have "super powers"

    • @mikeadams4717
      @mikeadams4717 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Stephen Bingham Agreed, he's missing your point.
      What I would look at when discussing close margins like this would be minimum frame rate and frame time deltas. This would be much more relative to the 'smoothness' you get in game. I would gladly take a 2 FPS drop in average framerate if my minimum framerate was higher and my frame time lower.

    I talked to someone at GameStop about this, and apparently they had no idea what they were talking about... they told me you could not exit SteamOS and that you could not do anything else besides use Steam which is clearly wrong. It's a neat idea, but it's just kind of stupid to have integrated parts on it. You're better off simply buying or building a PC yourself that you can actually upgrade. Otherwise you won't be able to keep up with the newest gen games for long. If none of It's parts were integrated, this might be a good starting point for an upgradeable PC, especially since it's compact and somewhat portable.
    Like I said, good idea but it needs some work and you're definitely better off getting a regular PC. You could probably get something comparable for the same price.

    I made my own SteamOS with Windows 10 as the background platform. I cut W10 down to just the necessities to run games using WinReducer which got me an install footprint of under 5 gigs. Set Steam to start in big screen mode and Origin games I linked to the Steam's UI. So this method decreased the initial boot time to where it boots Steam much faster so I never see the desktop. So not it's a much more streamlined console like experience and with the Steam controller I can make shortcuts on Steam to GOG games or basically every game imaginable.

      +Heath Hampton I just returned it. My wife got this for a christmas present, so I didn't even open it. I got the i7 $750 model. If anyone knows a decent gaming PC for abound the same price let me know. I realize it's not going to be a great PC for that amount, I just wanted some ideas.

    • @madjunir
      @madjunir 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Heath Hampton I would recommend syber / cyberpower. They also sell both windows versions or steamOS versions (or you can have both installed). Is pretty upgradable too for the future. I basically run Linux mainly, so am mostly fine with the 1700 games (100 ports per month) it has and will have many more games coming once Vulkan (mantle 2.0) is out. I use my windows machine less and less as I don't like having antivirus in the background taking up memory and cpu. So if a game is available on Linux / steamOS I prefer playing it there than in windows. Also the controller is incredible is 90% software. So This reviewer left out most of its features like Gyro /Motion Aim controls for shooters, mode shifting, trackball, etc. am having a lot of fun learning its potential with many good guides already.

  • @rileyrattray
    @rileyrattray 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Out of the box, it's good. What is great is that I can upgrade the RAM and the HDD plus I can get a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate onto this. The multi-colour lights on the machine is a nice added addition but whether or not I am able to change the lights after getting 7 Ultimate is another question. The Steam Controller is nice HOWEVER the clicking will get on my nerves. Best thing for me is to sell it and get an Xbox One controller instead. This leads me to the fact that you are able to hide the dongle inside the machine rather than having to take up a USB port on the outside. Very considerate Alienware. I will get 16gb of RAM on this plus an XBone controller just to get a better experience from this.

    people need to stop bitching about the steam os performance. it's not that steam os is slow. if anything, Microsoft really improved performance with Windows 10. but mostly, game devs aren't optimizing their Linux ports. that being said, when you're saving 100 and only benchmarking 2 frames less on the heaven benchmark, I call it a success. if they added a gpu that added 2 fps but raised the price 100 dollars would you buy it? it's about performance per dollar folks. this thing out performed the current gen consoles and is a bit more expensive. I'm fine with that. it also comes with lots of free games, free multiplayer, and games are cheaper

      Well you can play all steam games on it. Hints why it's called steam machine. Yes you can keyboard and mouse and this is strictly for gaming not doing school work. A good PC runs about 900-2000$

    I don't even know why anyone would bother dual booting on a rig like this. Just install Windows 10, have access to everything that Steam has to offer and call it a day. The only reason they went with a Linux based OS was to avoid licensing fees and keep costs down. It's been nothing but a headache.

      It's a PC even with Steam OS, it's just a Debian Linux distribution, when you exit Steam, you will just see a full fledged nice desktop environment (and being Linux, you're not stuck with that desktop, you can install other desktop interfaces to fit your taste), and ofc you can have many common software like Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Skype, VLC, and many other mature Linux software on it. Even Microsoft is beginning to release some software for Linux for some reason. But yes, also buying the regular Alpha with Windows (or installing Windows on the Alpha Steam version) will be just like a regular PC. The only "console-like" thing it has is the case basically :)
