looking back 5 years later.... "not like there is a hand held gaming device that runs steam...." steam deck 512 gb pre ordered so excited! great content linus! keep up the good work!
Bought it back in 2017 for $10 so I can stream my rig to my basement theater. I've been using it almost daily ever since for both gaming and desktop/web browser/etc. Tried to replace it with steam link app running through fire tv cube and it was a laggy/buggy mess. Switched right back. Best $10 spent.
The Link does receive a fair amount of updates along with your regular-everyday Steam client updates. For example, the Link was updated to support virtualization and now can be utilized as the primary video source. So yeah, I think this thing kicks ass... now :)
@@Durovnaxat the end of steam links life before we got the mobile app etc they had to get rid of steam links in a Massive sale where they became 2.50 without shipping. I was there when it happend
I have the Steam Link, and I've had it for quite a while. I would highly recommend this product if your internet is up to speed it runs perfectly and it's really enjoyable to have the power of my PC running my favorite games on my TV in a console environment. I really have the best of both worlds now.
I got it for $5 in an EB Games two days ago. I played Broforce with my friend today, and we had a blast - no issues during play, but when we took a break and his Xbox controller turned off to save power, we had some trouble getting it to connect again. Still though, being able to play PC games with friends on a TV was a great experience, and well worth the $5. -though yes, go wired; i don't know what the link is like without a wired connection, but when it is wired, it's completely hassle-free-
I've got an idea for a build LMG! Imagine this: One server, running unRAID with multiple VM's with dedicated Nvidia home streaming capable GPU's, a huge amount of storage and 1 or 2 beefy xeon CPU's. Does this sound familiar? Yes, but what's the difference then? Well.. 1. You could make the ultimate in-home entertainment distribution server by using the GPU's to distribute gaming horsepower. Either through Nvidia stream to shield devices and moonlight (third party android app which is compatible with nvidia and which works really well from my experience) or to steam links. 2. Then use a VM with some USB Cable receivers and something like DVBLogic for live TV 3. Then use a VM which is running a plex server for media distribution. 4. And you could even add a VM that's running game servers. This PC would theoretically be able to stream games, movies, music, TV shows and live TV to low powered clients who can also game on servers running on it.
Finally got one of these set up recently and had major lag spikes running a powerline adapter from upstairs, however after realising I had a spare 30m ethernet cable and that I could close the exterior windows on them without damaging them, I ran ethernet down the side of the house and into my living room. Works awesome, looks great and so far has been absolutely solid.
STEAM LINK IS AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just bought one and you can CONTROL YOUR ENTIRE DESKTOP / PC WITH IT !!!! That's right. Not only does it run steam, you can use it to control your desktop, stream videos etc and it works flawlessly !!!!!
All of your writers are very good Linus, I love how NONE of your videos have that forced or scripted feel. This new writer is just as good as the rest.
This weekend the link and controller are on sale for only $35 each. I have one controller already and am grabbing another because they are VERY good input devices in many contexts. Haven't used the link before, but for this price have to give it a shot. :)
Michael Richardson I got mine brand new on steam for 5 bucks and I love it for the price I paid. Worth it for a little fun but could never replace running the game on the display natively
-Can you play with this games of origin (battlefield 1) -Does the steam link make the quality of your game better if you have a bad pc ? (Sorry for my english)
If you're using a wired connection directly to your PC. Go to Steam settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options and turn off "Dynamically Adjust Capture Resolution To Improve Performace". Latency dropped from something like 69ms to under 20ms (around 13ms to 18ms). It's low enough to play 2D games well. I think dynamic resolution is more for wifi which can be a lot more unstable in performance than a wired conection. The Steam Link continues to impress me. :-)
I got one of these, honestly the most appealing feature of them is that they can literally just stream your whole PC to any screen in the house, you don't even need to use them for gaming necessarily, you can just use them as a way of remoting to any device, you could even use them for work. Also it's possible to connect to PCs across the internet too (even though the latency is obviously going to be crap) which could be useful in some circumstances perhaps. It really is just a device for taking video and audio from Location A and presenting it at Location B, and taking inputs at Location B and feeding them back to Location A, about as close to real time as the connection will allow. Instead of making something gimmicky and designed to railroad consumers into a specific way of doing things or some kind of ecosystem, what Valve has made is really just a neat little dedicated 'remote desktop' device with easy setup as long as you have Steam installed, and if you know what you're doing, you could use it for anything. It's cheap, it's reliable, it works, it's no bullshit.
Over 2 years from this video and the Steam Link, while not being produced anymore, there are still updates in beta coming in the next few weeks. Valve really likes to keep their customers happy.
Linus, here's some feedback. When doing a review for a product start with a clear, simple description of what the product is and what it is meant to do. Having never heard of the Steam Link before, I came in here and from the start of the video I was bombarded with technical specs, opinions, remarks and whatnot and kept wondering all that time "but what is this device's purpose? What is is supposed to do?"
Bought this bad boy for about £12 from a game store when they were discontinuing them, in July 2017. Since then I've been for the most part using it as a remote desktop station, I can pretty much play and do whatever I would on my physical PC, except I can do it when I'm away from home or downstairs. A few issues are: Need to buy some third party app on the steam store for steamlink plugged microphones (extortion and an absolute joke, I haven't bought it, this should be native.) Printscreen button doesn't work If you're moving your mouse and click (E.G adjusting camera view in WoW) it will throw your camera way off. Other than that, it's great and extremely convenient.
I had one of these for ages but didnt have a proper pc or tv. Now I have both. I loaded up GTA 5 and honestly, theres a little latency but its not bad! The TV is a 4K one and I have no issues with the screen quality whatsoever. I mean a direct HDMI link from PC to TV would be better, but I'm not complaining as far as performance goes! Protip: Use ethernet cables for both your PC and the Steam Link for the best results.
linus at the end you say that you can stream without ad's why not just install an ad blocker???... haha love your videos keep it up, also i will be moving to Canada early next year so i was just wondering if it might be OK to pop in and say hi :)
Another great job by Linus. With the current Steam sale on these for :2.50 ($10 total with shipping), this was the exact detail I needed to decided to buy it! (as if I were ever going to 'not buy' hardware, pffff) -- Thanks again for the video.
I love my Link. I bought a second one. mounted it on the back of a battery-powered monitor (originally for my drone) and can stick it to pretty much wherever. I just plug in the link and go. Edit: upon finishing the video I must note that the main multiplayer game I play is casual Minecraft. When I want something serious I go to my computer set up for serious gaming.
I dont understand why this failed. Surely I cant be the only one who really wants to chill in their living room and still play my PC games? maybe markting was an issue because I had no idea this was a thing until now, two years later.
Just to help anyone else watching this video now. For the past couple of years since steam big picture / game streaming has been available. I keep my Xbox wireless adapter plugged into the server rather than the client, this eliminates any input lag. Of course minor FPS lag is still there but it's not as noticeable. And when you start to see someone barley show up in the corner of your screen your finger eye coordination can adjust and take over from there. :) hope this helps!
I picked it up in the $20 black friday sale. It's pretty useful, although quite buggy. About half of my games work perfectly without any changes, the others have issues. Sometimes I have to go to the pc and shut the game manually because steam link loses focus on it, or a game opens in a small window in the middle of the screen. If I adjust the resolution and switch out of full screen mode, or switch the game from directx to opengl, most of them work but with a visible cursor on the screen that has to be moved out of the way on the pc. It's acceptable for what it is, since it's like having a gaming console in the living room.
I bought my steam link on the steam sale and I'm VERY satisfied with it. (No one payed me to say that). I'm using Broadband over power lines to get a reliable connection between my pc and steam link and it runs perfectly :). Totally recommend it. Yes you can watch movies and yes it works with games outside of steam.
I played through Witcher 3 on Steam Link with ethernet connected directly to a £10 pcie network card in my PC using Steam. 95% smooth. I partially blame dual monitors @1440p for that. 100% recommend, especially at those ridiculous sales like recent -90% (yes, shipping costs more expensive than device)
Also I tried to run Fifa through the add non steams game feature and it did work but after I quit Fifa I had to restart my steam and restart my steam link because it was very glitchy.
Yeah, just add the .exe file into steam through the "add non-steam game" function. You would have to manually log-into Overwatch, because you're not logging in from Battle.Net, I know 'cause I tried it... REALLY responsive, love it. :D
One tip: If you have a laptop in the room that you're using SteamLink but your main PC is in a whole different part of the house use Chrome Remote Desktop to login, enter the code, unlock the PC etc. Saves me walking up and down the stairs every time something funky happens.
BlackFalls Gaming .....laptops cant be played at ANY time. I am talking that I can carry with both my hands and play my steam with, something atleast a little larger than a 3ds XL but not with two screens.
I don't think we have that kind of hardware to play steam games... you could try streaming the games on to your mobile with some app,but you will have to stay near wifi..
I had a steam link and really liked it. However I replaced it with an nvidia shield TV, which also lets you do steam big picture. I found the experience with the shield infinitely better. It's more expensive but I wouldn't recommend a steam link if you can budget a shield. It is like the perfect living room computer.
And now Steam Link is just a standalone feature on your PC with Steam installed. You can now use WiFi or a cellular connection to game on the go, or at a friends house to play with them locally. Personally I think it's great. Almost no latency that I can feel when playing away from home or even outside with my Razer Kishi connected to my phone to simulate a Steam Deck of sorts. I know I'll never need a Steam Deck with how well Steam Link works these days
I've found the reviews for Steam Link to be entirely lacking. if you are a stickler for detail with an eye for video quality you will notice the difference. Even when running perfectly, it can be explained as the difference between playing a game on your PC and watching a TH-cam video of that same game. It isn't quite the same. Additionally if you are running cutting edge games to their absolute limit on your PC the additional load caused by the video encoding will cause your game to lose those precious frames per second. For me this wasn't acceptable and I ended up buying a massive HDMI cable and a series of powered USB extenders. If you're a graphics whore like me you won't like the Steam Link.
good review. it's an important point that STEAM are transparent about their ongoing support and improvements to a platform. it's a consumer confidence issue. it makes people more likely to by STEAM products in future if they think that STEAM isn't just making a couple of novelty products.
I got a steam link during summer sale for 2.50$(plus 7.50$ shipping fee). mostly use it to play Pure Pool with friends that come over. few other casual games work fine. like sonic 2 and tetris style games. left 4 dead2 had some glitches with survivors being invisible and guns not showing up sometimes. works fine with xbox one controllers with cords.
I have found wireless AC to provide a better and more consistent experience than wired with the Steam Link. On the highest quality settings, I have experienced hitches and lag on wired (and yes, I have tested with several devices, at consumer and prosumer levels as well as an older commercial grade 3Com switch) whereas I have found them less common using my Asus WIFI on the 5gHz band. YMMV depending on wireless congestion in your area, obviously - I have the only operating 5gHz network within a mile of my house as far as I can determine, so again, YMMV.
I'd rather have a console cough Xbox 360 cough because it's fun with a whole bunch of friends or family. PC don't support split screen on most games and they are large, even if you use the smallest ITX build its still large. While in my room a beast sleeps waiting for a game to be lunched and played 1080p 24 hours
MDViper Studios Sadly true, but Xbox 360 is still running, you can still play games like Cod Ghosts, BO2, AC IV. Hopefully Developers work on split screen for PCs
Being a family man and having a Wii, then a WiiU, I got tired of Nintendo. Both systems are great (imo) and I had a lot of fun on them, still do, but I stood by while games that I was very interested in were going to the other consoles and PC. I didn't have a decent gaming PC. I thought about finally getting a PS4 or XBONE, but the Steam Link lets me have the best of both worlds. So I built up a new modest gaming PC with a 6700k and a R9 390, connected my Steam Link to my TV downstairs and I got the Steam Controller and some 360 controllers and everything is great. I can play family friendly games on the TV downstairs and play the more adult rated games on my PC upstairs. FPS games don't do well through steam link, but many console like games and RPGs work great and on Ultra settings. For $50, it is definitely worth having.
I just grabbed one of these off Ebay. It was "Steam Link Only" so even with shipping included it was only $40. I'll pay $28 + shipping and grab my own wires. Others are starting bidding wars at that price.

Yeah I got it from Steam at this price
Yeah i know
I got it for 1$ with the ICEY bundle :D
Székely Áron wow
Linus Tech Tips will always have a special place in my heart. You guys have been there for me at every corner.
I just recently fired mine up after several years and was pleasantly surprised it still holds up, and works great!
$19.99 over on Amazon!
was you seeing a sale? looking now n higher then gamestop amazon listed at $57.19 can you post link plz?
Tyler Graves It was on sale over the holidays.
Tyler Graves youll have to wait for the steam summer sale
its on sale atm!
Tyler Graves it's on sale right now
if I'm gonna run a long ethernet cable through my house, I'd rather just use an HDMI cable
It’s $5 for the steam sale boys
I played through Witcher 3 on Steam Link with ethernet connected directly to a £10 pcie network card in my PC using Steam. 95% smooth. I partially blame dual monitors @1440p for that. 100% recommend, especially at those ridiculous sales like recent -90% (yes, shipping costs more expensive than device)
New employee, add some more skits to your script, Linus humor is what brings the viewers
besides his good looks.....that is..
Does this only work for Steam? Could I play other games that I have added to my steam library (like overwatch on battle net)
It works for anything, apparently.
works for everything but wouldn't recommend playing competitive FPS
Also I tried to run Fifa through the add non steams game feature and it did work but after I quit Fifa I had to restart my steam and restart my steam link because it was very glitchy.
Yeah, just add the .exe file into steam through the "add non-steam game" function. You would have to manually log-into Overwatch, because you're not logging in from Battle.Net, I know 'cause I tried it... REALLY responsive, love it. :D
not really it sucks for everything else than steam games, its possible but terrible
is it too late to congratulate the new member?
It's never to late, happy birthday btw :)
Who else bought this in Steam Sale 2018?
Imagine Riley's joke about the baby monitor interfering with your steam link stream quality
One tip: If you have a laptop in the room that you're using SteamLink but your main PC is in a whole different part of the house use Chrome Remote Desktop to login, enter the code, unlock the PC etc. Saves me walking up and down the stairs every time something funky happens.
Why does Linus need 6 employees when 90% of tech channels are run by one guy and the quality/upload rate is the same?
+Rhetorical Question whose upload rate is the same? We do 10 videos per week across the 3 channels.
+LinusTechTips That was a rhetorical question...
There are independent reviewers and other tech channels which do more than reviews, like LTT, Android Authority, etc.
+LinusTechTips 1 person can make 5 a week. 2 can make 10 a week, you have 6?
Rhetorical Question I guess is that he is a family man and wants more time to spend with them.
Unlisted Party!
Please I fucking beg for a portable steam gaming console that can be played at any time.
Alienware steam machine?
Lol just get a laptop
BlackFalls Gaming .....laptops cant be played at ANY time. I am talking that I can carry with both my hands and play my steam with, something atleast a little larger than a 3ds XL but not with two screens.
Jeffrey Fife well then the shit nintendo switch is what u can get atm
I know I'll never need a Steam Deck with how well Steam Link works these days
congratulations to the new ("still unknown") team member, it was great!
Linus please upload some pc builds / the pc related videos.... I've been waiting for so long
We must help the guy who editing videos...thumb up to saving him :-)
Can you connect the steam link to your android phone
Wild Bass Your phone would have to have a HDMI port.
Great work new writer. I actually audibly laughed at the WiFi router chasing the steam link across the table.
But would it work with 7 gamers one CPU?!?
Anders Fahlgren oml
Yes ofc silly 😂
Great Script. Hats off to the Writer
Here after update 883. Crazy it's still being updated.
good review. it's an important point that STEAM are transparent about their ongoing support and improvements to a platform. it's a consumer confidence issue. it makes people more likely to by STEAM products in future if they think that STEAM isn't just making a couple of novelty products.

Got it for $2.50 in 2018 lmao
Nice one Linus! I'm cracking up with "Steam has support".
Got mine for like 5 Euros during the summer sales. Very happy so far. It really feels like a 60+ Euro product (which is the standard price).
anyone in 2021
Present.
Ye
hu
I was going to purchase this since its on steam for $5. Then I saw it's $7.99 shipping.... yeah nopeeeeee
I bought this to play overwatch in my room because my pc is in the office. After I ordered I realized overwatch is a blizzard game.......... Sigh xD
Just add it to your non steam games list in you steam library and it works
PlGGS, can't we also just operate it as a wireless HDMI??
Who watches this in 2018 like me?
Mr.Vinyo 2017*
yeah that would be the joke :|
Mr.Vinyo meh
For once im gonna say yeah since there wont be a billion notifications for ppl saying ”MEEEE :D!!!!!!”
2019... Let's hope i dont get 69.000.000.000 notifications!
I'd rather just build pcs for my living room (which I've done).
I'd rather have a console cough Xbox 360 cough because it's fun with a whole bunch of friends or family. PC don't support split screen on most games and they are large, even if you use the smallest ITX build its still large. While in my room a beast sleeps waiting for a game to be lunched and played 1080p 24 hours
ur inferior consoles dont support split screen anymore either
also xbox 360 is abandond
MDViper Studios Sadly true, but Xbox 360 is still running, you can still play games like Cod Ghosts, BO2, AC IV. Hopefully Developers work on split screen for PCs
+Alaa Afara Cryorig makes an MITX case that doubles as a monitor stand. It's not the smallest case, but using it as a stand makes it seem tiny.
BLOOGaming I'll check it out, thanks.
Please don't give up editing videos what would I do without You . Linus keep forcing Him !!
Same. I snatched a new one on Ebay, boxed and all. €40. Worth it.
