- Searching on the eBay I found this steam machine for $150USD with Steam OS installed. Is this worth it? Is steam OS still useable? watch and see!

This is 2021, and the Steam Proton API has been available since 2019. Turn that on and you will be able to play a lot of your Windows-Only games

Downloads fast though red dead 2 I saw thats a deffinet and borderlands and all my final fantasy and walking dead games i gotta finesh em all and get some revenge optional hard battles lightning returns for instance and doki doki literature club ive had my eyes set on that as well as until dawn must plays for me

@@gkjester Most likely not automatically, but once they release the installation CD you could put that on a USB stick and install the new one yourself.

I used this as my main gaming pc for a long time when i was new to pc gaming. It did pretty good, i loved that thing.

Did you try play valorant? I really like Linux for my daily use, but Valorant is the only game with big problem in linux
@@pucavaz valve announced they're working with those publishers to get their anti-cheat working on linux, since that's what's been holding those multi-player games back.
They aim to make them compatible by the end if the year for the steam deck launch.
@@pucavaz i didn't i gave up tinkering with steam os and just went with windows 10. easier, faster and less heache compared to steam os.I have never tinkered with linux. need to though.

I still use my Steam Controller to this day. It’s so customisable. Far better for me than traditional analogue sticks.
I really liked the controller, just wished it was waited more, that was my only grippe with it.
I have one of these beuties as my main machine for my Work from Home job, It does all the jobs without problems, I love it
If you are not a gamer, this PC can handle almost any task for domestic use.
I miss it. bought it and flipped it for a nice profit. wish I would of kept it. That thing ran great!

For when you look at the library, you can filter easily to "runs on Steam OS" as far as i remember from trying it, so you don't need to look for what runns on it or not, you can just filter for it.
If people do buy this, install Gamer OS on it, pretty much same thing but much more updated. Or build one your self too.
now does this install using a bootable usb like using rufus?
@@DLMtechgarage gamer-os.github.io/ can use etcher, ,and I have not used rufus for a bit, but they do have a discord if any become a problem.

@@DLMtechgarage Steam controller is best in fps games. BUT i must warn you. There is steep learning curve(like trying to learn manual if you always drive automatic) and in one moment it just clicks in brain and then it is perfect but soon after that you will learn that game programers are pigs that don't allow you to use gamepad analogs alongside with precise gyro aiming. Funny thing is that EA games are perfectly prepared for SC and were even before they start selling on steam. You just need to start origin through steam(you add whole origin launcher through ''add a non-steam game'' button). Start controller configuration for Origin in its steam page and set mouse input to gyro(and enable button on right pad touch)(low sensitivity/hign accuracy) for aiming while shooting and right trackpad(higher sensitivity/low accuracy) for looking around and fast changes of direction. Crysises :D, Battlefields, Titahfall2 no problem. For example in The Control it is glitching if you try use analog stick to motion while using gyro(mouse input) at the same time. You can emulate right analog when aiming with gyro but that's not preferred option by me.

Actually Steam OS does support a lot of windows games through proton. For some games you have to enable proton in all games in settings (Steam play)
For tomb raider, I suspect it's popping the launcher underneath big picture mode. If you can alt-tab, you might be able to see it. There's an option to turn off the launcher (in the launcher itself and also with a command line param). Not sure why CS:GO isn't launching. My big issue was that it wasn't loading in fullscreen so I had to launch with the -fullscreen command line param. Maybe that will fix it?
yea I eventually gave up on that steam OS and went with windows 10. ran way better and easier to use. Thanks for the input!!
I wonder when gaming PCs will get 1 TB ram 1 TB GPU vram 300 petaflop CPU 10 petabyte solid state drive and a motherboard that can handle all that perfectly

install Windows on it and install an SSD. Watch as it becomes a great budget PC. I still use mine. Currently playing FInal fantasy XIV Online on Desktop graphics preset.
yup, that's the best way to utilize these. the Steam os in my opinion is def not worth it.
Came looking after the Steam Deck reveal, would you be able to do a Steam Machine revival video? Maybe trying forcing Proton to run those games you weren't able to, or if they release it maybe install the new SteamOS 3 to test the performance if it's possible to install it there (unless Steam forces you to update it themselves)
i would like to, need to try and find one for cheap though. they have gone up in price.

To be hones I wanted to get my hands on Steam Machine myself in the past before thinking that because of their failure their price would be lower but over here the only ones being sold are expensive and used lmao
@@leandrogoslean889 yea same here. their value is their name and small form factor, if you delete steam OS and run windows they make real good small gaming computers.
In the setting menu you can go to "steam Play" and use proton to play with emulation the games that are not native linux support
man good to know appreciate it. How's the emulation, any lag, fps loss or glitches????

Yeah installing a different Linux os is probably the way to go with this "console" unless Valve starts updating their os again, it would be nice to have if and play games using Proton if it wasn't for the price that people are selling it online for having the alienware and steam logos on them.

Valve should have just licensed their Steam Logo to slap onto prebuilt Gaming PCs and be done with it. If Computer Case ,Motherboard, RAM, or Graphics Card manufactures wanted to pay a royalty's for the Steam Icon/Valves artwork. Imagine having a Black Mesa Logo on front of your PC. That's how you develop a brand!

You should update. If the update doesn't work in steam, then using terminal in desktop mode. Commands: sudo apt-get update then; sudo apt-get upgrade.
If you update it you will get much more support, as some things may not work.
Man, I used to have one of them... I regrettably sent mine back because at those moments in time; I was trying to install dang Windows on it... Heh, I didn't have knowledge of how wayback when up till now.
they are cool little machines. I sold mines a few month back for way more then I paid for it and def miss it. After putting windows on it, it is def way better and worth having around. decent little gaming pc if you get it for the right price.
I installed Windows on mine, but I saved the original drive. Thinking about putting it back in and firing it up again.
@@gkjester apparently enabling proton on it helps the steam os never tried it but a bunch of people on here said it does.
@@DLMtechgarage I’m going to do it. I only have the I3 V1 model, but I’d like to see what it is like. I originally replaced the drive because there were so few compatible games. That seems to be better now.

With GeForce now and steam link, there's no need for this. It's nice though!

I have no clue why you’re experiencing this. I know it’s months late and I’m just now seeing this but I use this exact machine. I bought it broken but it just needed a cmos battery. I’ve played these exact games within the past year. I got all achievements on tomb raider and I play csgo every other day or so. I’ve played borderlands 2 but I got enough of that on the 360 and ps3.
somebody said something about not having proton enable or something to that effect was the reason.
SteamOS 3.0 is coming!
And 3.0 will probably actually be good, they did a wise choice with Arch because unlike this one it is a rolling release with KDE. So even if valve is lazy again your not going to be stuck with old drivers and bad system support. And KDE is a much nicer desktop than this unmodified Gnome.
The interface itself won't make a difference on either since thats just big picture on both of them.

@@DLMtechgarage it is all good. Probably also plenty of other people who could end up testing it whenever it is an option for it. Not like I think there are many of these Steam Machines anymore.
Chimera OS is a better option than Steam OS 2 at this point trying that on a steam machine is actually the best option till steam OS 3 Holo comes out.
The R2 model significantly leapfrogged this thing sadly.

man i wish my cousin would have seen this....he just got one of these exactly the same for 600$....told em i hoped they only had 300 or less in it....they got ripped off....how old is this system?
ouch. they are about 8 years old if i am not mistaken. as an investment $600 is way too much, but for collectors that is about what they tend to go for. def too much and I would not of paid that.

Im not really sure, all i did was upgrade the ram years ago everything else is stock Alienware Alpha i3 4170t model then slight overclock with MSI & changed a few things in Nvidia control panel but if i remember correct its either a NVIDIA GTX 780TI or GTX970M... I've had it for years that little sucker can run alot of newer games just dont go to large pvp battles but i can use it as a RPG for New World 1080p 30fps easily

If it's not the same versionindo believe you can upgrade and can gain quite a number of features and and active updates. I can gaureentee anything but it's worth looking in to. If I had more time and money I'd buy and try it and post a video or blog post

@@DLMtechgarage yeah I can imagine I had a look but they don't looks so good now I'll buy from the actual company though had to many things brakedown to soon ice seen a 4k gladiator brand but I have no clue if its fully steam supportive but it did say a gaming pc any advice on choices moneys no problem I could Try customizable but it's rather confusing ? Down side I'm not good with bright lights and thay have rainbow colors all over oh also I don't need a monitor as long as I can find my old cable or just gey a new one thinking I could get the fancy one but get an alienware mouse and fancy keyboard im hopeing this will be my last pc purchase of it needs repairs ill do so when it brakes down ive gotten dissapointed with consoles always troubled or brakeing down and besides I heard rumors that disturbed me steam will be hopefully for good but consoles will only be seen in museums 😱 unless I heard wrong because everythings streaming nowadays thats what I rember hearing

@@DLMtechgarage was more worried about driver support but they all installed automatically through windows update including the gpu driver. The model I have is the ASM100 with an i7, 8gb ram and custom 2gb Nvidia gpu. Solid machine even in 2023. Can only run older(2016 and older) and light titles natively but steam link and Xbox cloud gaming work great on it.
