Iron (ferrous, Fe2+) combines with protoporphyrin to form heme, then, heme combines with globin to form hemoglobin.
If you understand heme synthesis, you are more likely to understand topics like acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) as well as porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT).
This is an introduction to sideroblastic anemia.
Can anyone tell me why do we give dextrose to treat porphyrias?
The answer is in the video...Please let me know in the comments.

My pleasure 😇
Good luck 🍀
All Professors should learn from you how to teach, life would be much easier. Thank you good man.
I am honored!
Indeed I agree
I used your videos when I was at a pharmacy school now I graduated and use them to recall and teach other students :) just wanted to let you know your video will live along to many generations !! ^^ THANK YOU
This is amazing! Thank you so much, Sondos!
What's up Medicosis
I'm watching this video in 2024, I guess it's one of your early videos

Not a "doctor" well not for humans at least, anyway going to be a Vet, your video really helped me. Thank you
Thank you 🙏
Vets are also doctors....
@@fatimarehman4900no they aren’t 😂😂😂. They eat their patients
You're a doctor too :)
You are a doctor in my heart and acedemically! my pet lived for 8 years thanks to you guys I am so grateful ❤
Love your videos! They're helping me prepare for my ASCP Boards for my MLS certification. Much appreciated!
That’s awesome...thanks for watching!
I hope you passed? I'm doing this as well.
Can anyone tell me why do we give dextrose to treat porphyrias?
The answer is in the video...Please let me know in the comments.
Because glucose and other compounds like dextrose are inhibitors of delta ala production hence porphobilinogen won't be produced.
You got it...Excellent!
I believe it slows down the reaction softens the blow. The reaction is still enevitable at some level.
Glucose inhibits the heme synthesis pathway in 1st itself.
glucose inhibits the first step, so there will be no accumulation of porphyrins
I completely agree with Amanda Surujnauth from 2 years ago. Your videos are great. They are helping me complete my MLS program and prepare for the ASCP Boards.
Kristin, you’re the best!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
And thanks for supporting my channel on TH-cam...Thanks for clicking on the “join” button...It means the world to me!

The drug used is L-dopa.Thanks a ton! Love from India😊
Thank you!
You called me doctor and got my heart 😂❤
Levodopa.
Thanks a lot doctor.
Best medicine videos on youtube.
Thank you 🙏
Carbidopa which is oftenly combined with levodopa, inhibits the conversion of B6 to PLP which is a cofactor of delta-ALA synthase.
You are incredibly helpful for PA school as well not just medical school. We go so fast!
I am glad to hear that my videos are helpful:)
Hey, thank you very much for these videos ❤️
But where is the video about acute intermittent porphyria? I'm asking, cause you promised us and word is word, sir 🤠 ❤️
Why I love his voice so much 😍
Thank you so much ☺️
you ARE THE BEST IN TH-cam, sir, THANKS A LOT!!!!
Thank you 😊
I think there is a little mistake.ALA dehydratase is found in the cytosol. Love your lectures!
Ur right
Yup
Thanks mate, also didn't know that about carbidopa and b6 so I got two for the price of one.
Great :)
Sir your big fan from India! Your videos are amazing! As always
Thank you so much!
Nursing students watching too not only drs😌😌 helpful info thx 🙃
Thank you so much for watching 😊

You got it...Excellent
That was what I thought too. I was reading the comments to confirm lol
Awww that word you couldn't spell for second was so cute ascent

L dopa is given
N to control the action of L dopa.. we also need to give carbidopa
to inactivate comt, so happy i know these things now

"Hey, doctors and future doctors"
Me a biologist: Hi
Haha 😂
Can't wait for "doctor" to be official.
I wish you success!
Thank you very much, you are such an amazing professor
so when we say in acute intermittent porphyria there is an increase in urine porphyrins... which exactly are the "porphyrins" in this figure?
شكراً جزيلاً
Clear and to the point. Thank you!
My pleasure 😇
"Hey doctors" makes me cry i given up my dream , now im following bio medical science but I can't forget my dream😢
awesome vid, again ;) binge watching all of them.
NO WAY LIONEL HAS A BIOCHEM BOOK. (but is it sufficient without his videos to understand well enough?)
I love you way more now.
Lionel’s books are great...Videos with the book are better...The trick in biochemistry is to take out a piece of paper and try to write down all the pathway from scratch...Then try to focus on the rate limiting steps, and the enzymes that will cause diseases when deficient! Good luck!
do we need to know all the pathways by heart? :/
No, but the more you know the better...I will first start by memorizing the rate limiting step and the steps that have a disease associated with their deficiency, then I will try to add more to my memory!
*Thank you so much... you explained so simply* ❤❤
I have this doubt in head for year, have my own hypothesis but not sure, why in lead poisoning we have increase levels of ALA and protoporphyrin 9 if we inhibited 2 enzymes, I mean if we inhibited ALA dehydratase the pathway should stop here, how come it continues until protoporphyrin 9 ?
Isoniazid will also inhibit B6 (pyridoxine).
Yup
Thanks bro your voice is willing to give sleep to insomaniac patient Gb
Happy to help!
You're great Sir 💜
Thank you so much 😊

Why there is no ATP consumption in heme synthesis?
Loved the way you started😍
Thanks 🙏
Thanks a lot... Your videos are quite helpful... Please continue the good work 👍
Thank you 🙏
Not a doctor but a lab tech for the hospital, but thank you a lot anyway !
Thank you 🙏
I appreciate you!
Just discovered your channel, Good videos for medical students.
Are you a doctor?
Thanks for your comment, no, I am not a doctor!
what's your field if you don't mind me asking?
Just graduated, but I am not treating patients.
Excellent as always Thank you for all the effort
+Basheer Oudah You made my day!
Could i ask a question?
Why XLSA cause sideroblast anemia but other porphyria don't, they all cause decrease protoporphyrin
What’s XLSA?
@@MedicosisPerfectionalis X-link sideroblastic anemia~~
I make my digital notes by screenshotting your videos and writing down your explanation
Can you please send it to me
Levodopa will lead to protoporphyrin deficiency?
Thank you very much, completely well explain.
Thanks for your kind words...Good luck!
Such a hero
Thank you 🙏
The answer to your question, is it carbidopa and levodopa?
Levodopa 🌚
just subscribed!! such a helpful series :)
Glad to have you here!
Isoniazid, cyclosporine
These are not anti-parkinson drugs
Answer to your quest : Monoamine oxidase B ( MAO B) inhibitors
Edit : I am even confused with levodopa.
Please answer your quest.
The drug for Parkinson is carbidopa and levodopa.
It was usefull to have some of the names for further research but it was a bit of a shame that the process of how, and not only under what influence the substances come to be was left out.
Always u are te best
Thank you 🙏
I loved you explanation well done
Keep on 🌼
+Soma Kamaran Thanks a lot! Keep studying!

Thanks Thanks Cleared the topic....
You’re welcome!
thank u so much for ur great effort .. can i ask u if u made a video for porphyria ?
Not yet.
carbidopa --> B6 deficiency
+x What if the patient is treated for TB instead of Parkinson’s?
INH
+x You got both correct! You are today’s winner!
Thanks a lot for participating!
+x But, I think Levodopa is a better answer for the first one! When we give carbidopa plus levodopa together, we minimize the effect on vitamin B6!
Thanks!
thank you for making these videos. i greatly appreciate this.
Wow , really nice , Thanks alot
My pleasure 😇
At which stage of a Rbc age is heme synthesized ?.As mature Rbc's lack mitochondria how is then some part of heme synthesized in the mitochondria?.
All these steps occur in erythroblast.
Thank you so much. You are the best ❤️
My pleasure 😇
Hey doctors and future doctors

Please which drug inhibits vit 6
I can't thank you enough!
Of course!
Thanks a million!😊😊💕
My pleasure 😇
Excllent presentation. Carbidopa causes B6 deficiency
Thanks for your comment! Carbidopa is correct...and Levodopa is even more correct. Because when we give Levodopa and Carbidopa together, we minimize the bad effect on vitamin B6
But anyways, thanks a million! 👍
Can you explain why B12? Or did you mean B6 please :) If you meant B6 that's fine you dont need to explain it. -> Video -> Amazing!
Yeah...I meant B6...Sorry 😊
Thanks a lot and I would like to know the correct answer to the question you asked in the video from you.
Levodopa/Carbidopa.
Thank you so much, you did help me so much🤍🤍
