Fanatec Podium Racing Wheel F1 [DD1] Review [PC]

  • Hey guys, longer video than usual today, but then again the Fanatec Podium Racing Wheel F1 is a fairly weighty subject. A few first for me in this one. There's an unboxing of sorts, and some interesting motion stuff which I'm quite proud of. And of course, lots of direct drive goodness, all before the watershed!
    The Podium Racing Wheel F1 is Fanatec's first direct drive wheel designed to work on the Playstation platform. It's essentially Fanatec's regular DD1 PC wheelbase, with the addition of, (I presume) software that's designed to work properly with Sony's current gen consoles alongside the PC. And, again I presume, it will likely be forward compatible with the next generation console as well. Though, of course, Fanatec won't be able to confirm that yet.

      I agree. I've had mine for about 8 months, and it's just an incredible bit of kit. I personally think the wheel itself it's absolutely beautiful, and the motor is incredible. However, my Fanatec pedal set has left a lot to be desired in terms of reliability (clutch pedal spring came off after only a couple of months) and the cockpit they offer is downright hard to use

    -the LED screen on the wheelbase itself also allows customisation and saving of different settings like degrees of turn, FFB gain, etc.
    -the push buttons on the wheel have removable and customisable button caps

  • @angryginger791
    @angryginger791 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My progression went from G29 to Fanatec Clubsport V2.5 to my current OSW Simucube 1 with 20 Nm motor. When I upgraded to the V2.5, I was amazed at how smooth it felt, and how much clearer the FFB was. I could tell the difference between normal road bumps and curbing, for instance. However, the biggest difference was in how much easier it was to make corrections, especially catching slides. Then when I went to the OSW, it was like the same big step up all over again. The fidelity, depending on the sim of course, is just unreal. The ability to feel the limit allows me to not just catch slides, but to anticipate and control them. It's not just about the feel either, but also the responsiveness. It's a bit of a pandora's box. If you've never used one, you don't know what you're missing. But once you do, everything else just feels subpar.

    The "notchiness" is due to the motor being brushless, so it has a permanent magnet. The MiGe motors you find in other DD kits are brushed, which is why they feel smooth. You can do this with drills too. Take one that is brushed, and another that is brushless, and you will feel the same thing when you turn them.

  • @chads8267
    @chads8267 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've had this set for a month now and I love it. I was skeptical about the blue but I've fallen for it now and I've actually been color matching my rig and gear. The main point of this comment is I agree with Chris about the thumb wheels. They are easy to bump as I've done it more than once in any given race. I've used it for BB or ARB 's and I've completely stopped using them and I came up with a different control scheme. I hope they or someone comes up with a mod or a replacement for those. They just need a stronger detente. Given the cost that should be a no brainier. The toggles should be better, they seem like an after thought.
    That IS the only gripes I have. Keep up the great work Chris!

    Daaang! It’s beautiful!! It’s always been a dream to have one since I was like 11or 12. I now have a G29 without the shifter witch I don’t mind. But when it comes to the wheel it just doesn’t feel how I want it to. Don’t get me wrong. It is still very fun and pretty on point. So I’d definitely recommend it to people that can’t/don’t want to spend a crap ton of $$$. I myself want, want one of these bad boys. Lol I want that firm heavy feel.

    Currently debating replacing my old OSW v2 with a DD2 and Porsche wheel combo so this information is welcomed.
    Just a small note, the price comparison isn't completely fair, the price of the OSW is excluding tax and that would add 21% for most Europeans, besides the fact that you can't get it any more.
    Though the new VRS direct force pro is about 1000 euro including taxes, and Barry's review is definitely going to sell a lot of those units.

It's basically identical to the one you just showed here, except black alcantara and minus the F1 logo, saving me 150 euros. Great review Chris. Thank you. And an additional Comment on Fanatec Service. I've been a Fanatec customer for a few years now, Big fan. But, I ordered the PS4 DD1 over a month ago. First delivery was a great looking as you describe (despite the blue). But, the base never recognized the wheel and the fan went full speed as soon as it was powered. I took video and Fanatec asked me to repackage and send back (said they would reimburse me for shipping). I sent back and show they received over 3 weeks ago and not yet shipped a new one. Several polite but direct email sent with very rare responses with no real answers. Just received a Fedex notification so it may be shipped soon.
    All that to say, I like the products, but the customer service for such an expensive piece of kit is very disappointing. Disappointing the first was defective and the lack of urgency to make things right makes me question the priorities of the company.

    Good review. I've been the owner of a DD1 since it first came out last year, paired with Formula V2 and BMW GT2 rims. Firstly, direct drive has changed my life (upgraded from a G29). There's no going back. Though, many of the downsides you've noted (formula rim being MUCH too small, rotary encoders/buttons being weak/poorly designed, notchiness in the motor, etc.) have been things that I've struggled with as well. In addition, the BMW rim I have squeaks loudly under any bit of force feedback (tried tightening literally everything, Fanatec says it's just something the wheel does), the quick release is REALLY poorly designed and not intuitive at all (it lacks any real positive connection and while driving I can feel some play in the QR>wheel connection when rocking the wheel side to side), and the amount of software tuning options available limits just how good you can make a car feel. Though smoothing filters have been added in firmware (which rescued it from being REALLY sharp feeling when it first came out), it's hard to get a sweet spot dialed in where the wheel is still reactive and detailed but you don't get FFB spikes when going over kerbs. I'm almost always making tweaks to get it to feel right, but there is an abrasive quality that is hard to dial out (not to mention the entire system rattles under high FFB and makes loud notchy/blocky plastic sounds). Additionally, I've always been bothered by the seeming lack of any FFB when turning the wheel at slow speed/stand-still. In a real car, you can feel the tires scrubbing against the asphalt and that puts resistance in the steering column. With the DD1, it just feels glassy and too easy to turn. The Natural Friction effect helps marginally in this regard, but it still doesn't feel.... genuine. All-in-all, it just doesn't culminate in an experience that was worth the price tag for me. I have a Simucube 2 Pro on order for delivery in June with a buyer lined up for my Fanatec ecosystem. If you are reading this and are a prospective direct drive buyer who is persnickety about details- I would shy away from the Fanatec stuff. I have really enjoyed the DD1 for introducing me to the direct drive world, but it is not the ultimate experience for me.

    Great informative video!
    Imagine buying this wheel now for your Playstation 4. And in a couple of months when the Playstation 5 comes out it won't be compatible. I'm thinking of buying this wheel as an upgrade as long as there is 100% confirmation from Fanatec it will be compatible with the Playstation 5.

      Same boat, if they confirm PS5 compatibility and/or release a new PS5 model it's the main thing I'm waiting for before putting any serious thought toward DD. I absolutely plan on getting a PS5 (my first console in a decade, not counting the Switch) and Gran Turismo 7.

    I have this wheel and I have to say, coming from a g29... it's outstanding obviously. The only gripe I have with it is that I might need to send my rim back after about 4 months of use. There's a loud rattle coming from one of the handgrips, I suspect something with the vibrating motor but I'm not sure. I got the whole thing on sale for $1,400 and I'm loving every second of it!

    What was your reference point for 20% better - a CSW2.5? Thanks!
    (Also what do you think of the F1 2020 rim.. have a feeling you'd like that colour scheme a lot more, and the leather might make using the rotaries easier if you're ok to not use gloves).

    I’m not sure whether you’ve been watching the Supercars eSeries but regarding the question about “does DD wheels make you faster” all the feed back from the professional race drivers yes. I listen to various podcast involving Supercar drivers and while they don’t directly talk about DD systems they do mention how much quicker the better equipment makes them. The Supercars eSeries has a mix of drivers that sim race in their spare time and those that don’t at all. It’s been interesting watching the drivers upgrade their systems as the series progress. Almost all are using DD systems at this point and all are using load cell pedals which we all know by now give you the biggest turn of speed. Just thought it was interesting the difference in opinion, maybe that consistency you get from better equipment which translates into a faster over race distance is what the drivers are getting at.

    Here's a tip for anyone playing f1 2020 on a ps4 using the dd1. Put the force feedback to 135 in the game wheel settings for the dd1. This will help tighten your steering in the wheel when making tight turns. No more loose feel in the wheel.

    I actually like the color scheme, and the wheel still looks like premium equipment.
    My issue is that this is the only wheel they offer with the DD1 that is PS4 compatible.
    I don't do F1 type racing as I prefer Nascar and GT racing.

    Great vid but your comment on “what works best for you” regarding using desk clamps or less than suitable mounting rigs while not unfair, could be followed up with something like “but you’re really not extracting the full potential from its capabilities or the full value especially considering the cost”.

    I think the Blue Alcantara looks great. I think I will buy the Fanatec Podium F1. Been using G29 with PlaySeat for years and want to upgrade but I guess the PlaySeat will not be rigid enough for the DD1. My question is which chassis to get, the P1-X sim racing chassis or S1 simulator by rseat. New to your channel, watched many other sim youtubers but you explain things best in a calm and honest way.
