    I'm getting a second hand T470 soon and looking at past videos. Thank you for the informative video Robert (RIP).

    Thanks so much for the review - especially for comparing the T470 against the T450s! I have the T450s and the T470p, but am thinking about picking up a second-hand T470 (they're so cheap now!). I'd love to get my hands on a T480, but the price is way to high for me at the moment - I'll wait until the second-hand T480's hit the market.
    BTW - I run Linux on a T450s, and it's still awesome. I haven't had any issues with speed or performance for what I use it for. I have noticed it kind of struggles when I try to screen-record 1080p at 60fps, but it still manages to get the job done.
    The only reason why I'm going to purchase a T470 is for the Thunderbolt port - I want to use an eGPU. I know the T470's Thunderbolt 3 port is only wired up to 2 PCIe lanes, meaning max throughput is something like 16Gb/s, but that's okay with me (I'll mostly be doing CUDA stuff, so I'm not too worried about driving multiple 4K displays).
    Anyway, thanks again for the review - I'm a huge ThinkPad fan.

      Did you get it in Yuiun? Can you provide some insight? I heard lots of conflicting reports about an adapter being needed to use a PCIe NVME SSD if someone orders with a 500GB HDD with intention to replace ourselves.

    • @ppx7539
      @ppx7539 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got it from the Lenovo official website. I ordered the regular SSD version (not the nvme one). What I heard is that the original port is for HDD, and they add an adapter for SSD. I would recommend the regular SSD version and replace it with nvme SSD in the future if necessary. The intel 180GB SSD hard disk works pretty well and I doubt how much faster the NVME one would be considering the huge amount of money you need to pay for the upgrade.

    The internal 'non removable' battery is actually user replaceable in that it isn't soldered in. So since you can open the laptop (with some pain :-) ), you can replace that battery when it goes EOL. Unlike a Macbook!

    this may have been posted already but your shutdown startup test was with the windows 10 quick start feature enabled (which is on by default). it did not shut down completely (it is basically hibernation). you can see that by the power led blinking before going off. I turn this setting off as I often boot to Linux os via USB and or dual boot.
    pcie in this laptop makes a difference but it cannot fully utilize the latest m.2 drives as it only has 2 lanes. still a great laptop either way.

    Hey - How do you feel about the screen quality? This laptop seems 99% perfect for me but I'm worried about how good the screen would be? I would've loved the 1440p option but it doesn't allow you to choose it with the T470. I program on a 27 inch 1440p screen at the moment and I think I may have become "used" to it.

    What is the cable with the AC adapter to the left of the laptop for? And what cable are you using for power? I have a used T-470 and a dock.and the dock is powered by a USB cable plugged in the back that has a AC adapter like the one in your video I was asking about. I also have another power cable with AC adapter also that has a USB-C at the other end that I use when I take the laptop somewhere. There is a port on the left side towards the rear marked with a power symbol. Do you have a cable for that one? I did not get a cable for that one.

    It's sad to see you struggling to open the laptop just to replace minor parts. It seems that Lenovo is trashing the good old "form following function" design of ThinkPads and is trying to become more like Apple. Less user-friendly, thinner and lighter design by compromising many classic features, etc. ThinkPads were the favorite of many people because they were easy to deal with, but unfortunately Lenovo is making newer ThinkPads less appealing to those people. We should have realized what was going on when ThinkPads started to have 16:9 screens and 6-row chicklet keyboards.

    As your video is the only source to get to know more about t470, would request you to post another video to show all ports, internals such as where to insert sim card , performance , thunderbold port and any other details which would help people willing to buy this one. So far lenovo site has the HD display option. Not sure which one you have. If you post the video that covers display quality etc.. would be a great help. thank you.

    • @RobertYale

      Sudarshan sridhar All the ports can be viewed on the Lenovo website. They have lots of high resolution photos that show all of the port locations, which is why I didn't bother showing them on the video. This is the 1080p Full HD IPS screen. It is very similar to the Full HD screen that I had on the T450s. If screen quality is really important to you, you may want to wait for the higher resolution screen with better color accuracy that will be available with the T470s.

Almost every video I have seen, people break the clips, then the bottom cover never seats properly. My old company dell e6440 laptop had 2 screws and bang you were inside. My mother's company HP just had one screw to take off the bottom cover off.

    • @RobertYale
      @RobertYale  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nachiket Vartak the XPS is a much larger computer. I have no desire to lug around a 15.6" screen laptop. And I have yet to find a Dell (business series or otherwise) that has a build quality that comes anywhere near that of Lenovo.

    • @nachiketvartak8220
      @nachiketvartak8220 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your reply. Though you might be surprised that the thin bezels on the Dell XPS make it only about 1 inch wider than that T450S. The weight difference is 200g. the XPS series is aluminium + carbon fibre, compared to Lenovo's magnesium-aluminium alloy. Build quality is on par. I suppose I am a little disappointed that as a Thinkpad user, the performance upgrade options Lenovo offered in late 2016-early 2017 were devastatingly mediocre. I mean, Intel Graphics 620, 46 Wh battery, last generation dedicated low end GPU (if at all) for a 2100 € laptop. Poor show.

    • @goesuptoeleven
      @goesuptoeleven 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can add 8GB in the second slot but that means you cannot use "dual-channel configuration". It requires two modules of the same size and has a significant impact on the iGPU performance (20-30%). 8+8 is a good choice and an upgrade will be still cheaper comparing to the Lenovo website.

      sure, but the slim model surely should be the one to have features missing, in order to achieve its thinner form factor. As I understood it the non-slim is basically the one that should have more feature options at the expensive of a little thicker form
      I'm upgrading from a t440s and only just discovering how lenovo have been changing things in the past few years, my main concern is not getting the swappable battery at the rear like i can in my 440s. For that reason i will probably be forced to get the 470 over the 470s. But I would really like the 1440p screen. The 470s not only has a lack of power delivery due to relying on the lower capacity in built battery, but it has the more power hungry screen too... The 470s is also the one with thunderbolt port!
      They should really simplify their line up, and surely all of the features on the 'slim' version should be available on the non slim version, at the very least

    • @iggywow
      @iggywow 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the T470 does have Thunderbolt 3. It's the T470P version that doesn't, which is some really mind puzling stuff considering it is the "workstation" of the 14" thinkpads.

    Hi,
    I have another doubt related to hard disk. The options for t470 for HDD are
    1)500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5", SATA3
    2) Intel 180GB Solid State Drive, 2.5", SATA3, OPAL2.0
    3) 128GB Solid State Drive, SATA3
    4) 256 GB Solid State Drive PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0 - Capable
    5) 512 GB Solid State Drive, PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0
    6) 1 TB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe
    By default "500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5", SATA3" is included in the price. If i choose this when i am buying, can I upgrade it to " 256 GB Solid State Drive PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0 - Capable" later ??
    I don't have knowledge about PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0, ssd , SATA and they are interchangeable in the slot provided in T470.
    I have budget constraint so would like to go with default HDD ie. 7200prm SATA3 and later want to upgrade with SSD type.
    Will this be possible if the device come with SATA3 slot and later can be added "PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0" or only "Solid State Drive, SATA3" ??
    Another question is in the video, the laptop is SSD STATA3 drive ? because i think PCIe-NVMe drives looks like RAM slots.
    And my final question is is this laptop worth for programmers ?. I do lot of coding in IDEs such as visual studio , android studio and also run virtual machines via virtual box etc.. And browsing using multiple chrome tabs
    NO GAMING .. may be once in a while but not priority .. programming, browsing and watching videos are only priority
    Would you recommend t470? Thank you

    • @RobertYale
      @RobertYale  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the SATA drives and the PCI-E drives occupy the same physical space in the notebook, but use two different ports to connect. So yes, you could buy with stock SATA drive and upgrade later. The drive in the video is a 1tb PCI-E drive, and it does resemble a stick of RAM more than a traditional HD.
      I love the T470 so far. Best laptop I've ever owned.

      Robert Yale hi thank you for quick reply. does that mean having with default option i.e 1, latet i can upgrade with any of 2 or 3 or 4 models mentioned in previous note? depending on what i can buy with..?. sorry for many questions but these slots are confusing.

    • @RobertYale
      @RobertYale  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sudarshan sridhar yes, but option 4 would be the fastest by far since it accesses the board through PCI-E rather than SATA.

      @Sudarshansridhar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Yale ok. i will keep that in my mind. there is no quad-core option but dual core. hope the performance dose not hit. many times even though, i increase ram size, cpu utilization reaches 100% on my old laptops making laptop become slow for multiple operations
