  • Looks like I won a Chevy diesel express van on GovDeals. I might have not read the full description, like the part that said "bad engine" so let's see what I bought

    i think you should put a socket on end of crankshaft front pulley and see if the motor turns simple and easy

      Yep, that's my next plan. Unfortunately, I dropped the van about 10 miles from my shop, so once this rain lets up a bit, I'll be back out there

    We had a mini school bus with that same cab set up. We had issues replaced the battery still wouldn't start. New battery went bad almost right away. We started tracking the cables thinking something was wrong with them. We found a junction with a second battery cable coming off of it. We traced that and found a second battery hid in a box along the frame under the bus. The battery was so bad it had ruptured and ruined the cables. We had to replace that battery, the cables to that battery, and then replace the battery we had just replaced because the dead short caused by the second battery ruined it. It might be worth investigating to see if you have some kind of hidden second battery on that.

    The starter bolt broke because of what you were trying...bumping the starter. The first thing to do is pull all the injectors and see if it turns by hand. If so, that's good. If not, that's bad. If it's bad, what you do with it is up to you of course, but those engines are weak in every place they need to be strong. If you can think of it, it can happen to one of those...broken cranks, broken head bolts, cracked blocks, broken harmonic balancers, broken flex plates, broken starter bolts...the key word in every area is "broken"...not worn out...broken. They will overheat even when the cooling system is in good condition. I HOPE that will run but don't beat yourself up if it's a lost cause.

    • @flatbrokegarage
      @flatbrokegarage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I'm hoping it's not locked up, but not counting on it. With only 29k miles maybe a flexplate? We will see as soon as it drys up

    The lights on the van has daytime running lights which is common on General Motors cars and trucks. Since this van is diesel powered. Those engines require 2 batteries. When one battery goes bad, they have to be replaced in pairs. This type of van was actually used by the United States Air Force. It has the special dark blue color and looks like a van I saw when I landed in Toronto Airport.

    Get a new gear reduction starter in it and pray. With such low mileage its hard to believe that the engine is toast. Also clean up the battery ground to the body making sure you have a healthy ground. Good luck my friend hope it ends up being a affordable fix especially when you're flat broke

    Definitely should have 2 batteries. Look at your volt gauge on the dash with the key "on", it looks super low. That battery cable looks like it has corrosion down inside the insulation as well. You DO need those special knurled starter bolts, too. Find the other battery, replace both, and you might have to replace the cables as well. Oh, and get the proper starter bolts! Good luck, and give us an update!

    People already made some good comments so all I'd say is perhaps get some one to turn the engine on the crankshaft pulley 360° while you're watching the flex plate, if anything it'll tell you whether there's something else blocking the engine - before you hit full power on that starter.

    • @flatbrokegarage
      @flatbrokegarage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, I'm going to pull the starter and flexplate cover, I have a wrench for the flexplate and try to spin it over.

  • @robertsieber8374
    @robertsieber8374 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I'd get regular starter bolts first. GMs generally have the knurled bolts to help locate the starter and keep it from shifting around since the knurls help the bolts fit tighter in the bolt holes, or at least that has been my experience. I would think it would have 2 batteries too! Hope you get it going!
