I thought you might assess the problem I have with occasional flameouts. I discovered it was because of tiny air bubbles produced by the diesel pump that accumulated in a an upper bent in the fuel line to the heater. Eventually it entered the combustion chamber and extinguished the flame. Causing a lot of white smoke and diesel leaking before giving an error code and shutting off. Does anyone else have this problem? And is there a solution other than replacing the pump?
Hello, great and wonderful work. I have this same heater and also the same problem..but I don't know what to do and where to start...and I hope you can help me in the way that I can do something for it..because most people here do not have the knowledge and experience enough to fix it..please help 🥰🥰
Hi ya.. I watched your video and tried all you said. Unfortunately it still wouldn't light. So I took the clean a step further, and it's now working like it was when it was brand new. Just to make sure that it wasn't a fluke, I repeated the same process on the other 2 dead heaters that I had kept when they failed. All 3 now work perfectly! Video is on my page, hope it helps! Hmmmmm, maybe that is my problem... I had it pointing straight down, but just recently bent the pipe towards the back of the van as soon as it comes out of the van floor. Excellent. I am an engineer and know you have really clearly explained the installation and long term maintenance. Your years of experience are well passed on here. Well done.
Most were human error. I like watching the old diesel engineer from Australia. He has about 20 videos on how to install and how to troubleshoot diesel heaters.
Great breakdown of the actual device and moreso the explanation behind each mistake. Thanks for being so transparent. My mind is richer due to your humility and willingness to teach.
Excellent. I've just been quoted a price for a diagnostic that is the same as a new plug and tools. It's the "smoke on start up and fail first start but runs fine" problem. Three years in, second fan. I noticed someone mentioned screen over combustion intake, I'll second that. Mudwasps filled up a fan. I'll come back with results, cheers.
Watching you torture that poor heater learning these mistakes pains my soul but I'm glad you've been able to learn from them. Thank you for shairing that knowledge so others will hopefully not make the same mistakes.
Oh. My. Word. FINALLY the answer I’ve spent HOURS looking for all over the internet.. that tiny hole by the glow plug screen was covered and had become clogged with carbon buildup.. cleaning it and pushing it down far enough solved all my problems. Can’t believe I didn’t find this sooner I could have saved so much cold weather and headaches haha! Thank you thank you thank you!
This is by far the best video. I am having a issue. It starts up almost goes to or does go full fuel but then shuts down. After 3 starts it runs fine. Now seeing this video I see how critical that small hole is for air to get to the screen for combustion of oil on the screen. (Screen is sort of like a mantel is a gas light) Pressure fed oil burners atomize the oil so it will burn. The diesel heater vaporizes it on the hot screen a very cool process eleminating the high pressure pump and spray nozzel. I am going to try and blow out the fuel feed line to the screen and see what happens. I don't want to take it apart it's to cold. I bet the small hose has dust or dirt build up since the intake air is not filtered other that a screen in the intake.
This video is solid. Very helpful graphics. Notably you revealed one problem that almost neve gets discussed, and that is the depth of the atomizing screen. As mentioned, the screen must be below the air hole. My heater showed an even more subtle symptom. It would start fine when the ambient temp was 70F or above. At temps below 40, it would struggle to light, then extinguish as soon as the heater tried to ramp up. After using my heater heavily for 4 years plus, I have decided that I really should disassemble it every summer for a cleaning and inspection. Nearly every problem I have now is due to neglect. I subscribed and liked just based on the quality of this video.
Thanks Man! I thought I was in for buying a new Heater. Instead i removed it from the Van and cleaned it like your video showed. the only thing i couldn't do was remove the screen by the glow plug. Instead I just washed it out with some great cleaner I have. It started up and worked great.
make a hook out of the stainless steel wire of a Chinese food container and stick it in the screen opening at the far end and pull it out. Good to have a few spare screens as they damage easily. I also had a lot of carbon buildup in that hole past the screen and used the same wire to open it up by poking a hole through the carbon.
Thanks! I have searched everywhere. You keeping it simple is the key. Ran out of fuel and pump failure later. Cleaned it out back running. Thanks again.
Solid video,I'm now taking my heater apart,it ran great for 12 or so hours, then started belching white smoke and shutting down,it's getting 12 volts consistently off my battery generator, but I might order a 12v power supply and use that off the inverter instead
Great advice, another cause of white smoke that happened with my heater turned out to be water in combustion air intake pipe after heavy rain even thoughit it had the filter cap, I had it pointing up and have since left it horizontal .
Very helpful! Mine smokes like a fog machine on start up. I thought after a few tries it needed priming. After watching your video I realized it's not getting air. Thanks for cleaning that up! Was left freezing over night last night getting made at my diesel fog machine
This is the best explanation out there I’m a put it to work I just started getting a lot of white smoke found that my diesel pump was hanging around not bolted up to where it should it’s on a semi by the way I am going to take it apart clean it and shall share the results and if good you my friend deserve a brewsky thanks
Thanks pal. This is indeed the best resource I've found on the internet. I tried to buy you a coffee but your paypal says "This organization can't accept donations right now."
You solved my problem! Thank you so much! After watching your very clear advices, I removed the intake filter and the heater ignited! Sure, you are not a teacher?
This is probably one of the Best videos i have seen on this smoky problem. Makes total sense to me. Only problem, is after my same Smokey start up and pulling the chamber out, i find it very difficult to successfully clean the gause type mesh inside the chamber itself, which unfortunately is welded in place at time of manufacturing. So after cleaning all accessible parts and replacing the small filter mesh, my heater started right up with No smoke atall. My only solution is to keep a new burn chamber in stock at $27 canadian as a solid back up.
Thank you, this is the best video, and the first where you are actually knowing what you are talking about and showing how to solve problems. Awesome !
Just came across your channel. I really like how you explain things and show them. Too many people water-board u with useless crap, lol. Look forward to checking out your other videos. Take care
Thanks so much for the thorough video -- I had replaced the atomizer screen on my heater and didn't install it all the way... blocking the inlet hole and causing E10 codes. Nice animations, great video!
Hey Adam, just wanted to comment here. Thank you for the quick lesson and explanation. Just got really cold here in Nevada and went to turn on Seamus(DH Name). White smoke, no joy of lighting and E-10. I've used it in my garage bar for a single season last year, but......took it apart, took my time and found it was coked up an incredible amount of sooty goodness. Cleaned, had a beer and reinstalled. He is a happy unit now. Thank You
That was awesome, and cleared up many questions that I've had,I don't own one yet but I am considering buying one! What brand is best? Are Chinese diesel heaters good ? Also my vehicle runs on petroleum/gasoline is that better or worse than diesel? Thx EDGE
Thanks pal you explained it all very well. I forgot about the mesh and the glow plug. And cleaning the tiny hole so I will be doing that tomorrow is my diesel heater is just pumping out white smoke thank you.👍
This is the best video I've seen, thank you, carbon foulded an all in one being used as a test in an ice fishing tent to dry clothing during a large event in the rain... Back to running full power to burn out the rest if the carbon
Terrific video. I’m having all these problems right out of the box. I think I am flooding it with fuel. Anyway, this video has given me the confidence to strip it down, check every aspect you mention, reassemble and set it up correctly. Thank you for taking the trouble to help others.
Great video! Many people have mentioned cleaning the chamber but few have demonstrated how to do it. For DIY novices I would suggest taking pictures as you disassemble the unit. Anyone can take something apart, but...😂 Cheers and thanks.
The tiny air intake hole for the glow-plug is the path for fuel leakage when the heater is operated on its side (the wrong side, with glowplug facing downwards - whereby the blown cabin air will eventually contain diesel fumes) - it's not 'leaky' or faulty, it's why correct positioning is key.
I used to have hair like yours, but i have pulled it all out trying to figure out this heater!! lol Mine has been billowing smoke from brand new and I installed it exactly as instructed. What you said at the end might be my problem - too long and too thin of a power wire 🤔 If this is in fact my problem, I will definitely buy you a beer my friend 🍻 Great video, thank you 🙏
❤ your video 👍 When you buy a new ignition mesh, get one that comes with an insertion tool. It enables replacement to the correct depth without needing to remove any more than the outer cover and the glow plug. It’s so easy to do that I do mine every few months which negates any significant carbon build up in the ignition port. Takes about 2 minutes. I also have a bit of stiff wire with a bend on the end that fits in the fuel supply hole, a quick poke keeps that clear too. Ask me how I know to do this🙄😂
One very important thing also are 'the bends', I fitted a new 24v in my wooden shed but would repeatedly flame out so I fitted my other also new 12v heater which did exactly the same thing. In both cases I used the same exhaust set up which had 2 90degree bends and 1 45degree bend (through a stainless steel exhaust bulkhead fitting). Removing the 2 90degree bends solved the problem. Perhaps these heaters might benefit from smooth bore exhaust pipe 🤔
The key to keeping these things running clean is bringing them up to temperature,I ramp mine up slowly till it gets the unit to 200 c,then I turn it down and even with it turned all the way down it maintains 200c and runs like a champ, and the pump pumps very slowly
A couple times a year, run a couple of high heat cycles with clean kerosene. I've had mine in my semi for 9 years and have never had a problem. I opened it up for the 1st time last month. I didn't get enough carbon to fill a thimble.
Hi Adam. Thanks for that. Thinking that this vid ticks all the boxes for the problems that literally began two days ago when started on the first really cold day of our winter in Germany, after dismantling and inspecting the combustion chamber , I found it was only lightly coated with soot but that it was wet with unburned fuel. I cleaned it all thoroughly anyway. Glow plug looks good, mesh is seated correctly. After reassembly and restarting, I kept an eye on the screen to check the readings. As white smoke began belching out as before, I noticed that the glow plug symbol went out. I flicked through through the menu pressing "OK" and saw the temperature rise only slowly from 44, 45 thru to 58 degrees C and then stop at 58. White smoke was still belching out so I pressed for "OFF". Shut down process ran as normal. Glow plug symbol came on again briefly. No error code appeared. The sun is shining at 3 pm, outside air temp. (for combustion intake air) is 4 degrees. Any ideas?
Get a new mesh every 2000 run hours. It's a required maintenance item. You can try cleaning it as he has in this video, but theyre seriously so cheap and you can have a couple handy for later. 2000 run hours is 24/7 operation for 4 months. Or 12 hour operation for 8 months.
𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗙𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖!! I've been a diesel heater nut for years - had an Eberspächer in 2002, & am now enjoying the results of their broken price-collusion & expiring of patents - aka Chinese diesel heaters! This video has to be the best introduction to these fantastic devices on the Internet - even with John McK 47 & David McCluckie (sp) around - & is so detailed as to give you a good idea over why we need to tune them for optimum combustion, & how (i.e. which parameters affect which area). 👍🏽👍🏽
I tried everything you suggested on my 2kw but it turned out to be a torn gasket which must have been done during manufacturer the gasket was the inside one on the combustion chamber.
Just to say I have added your video to my Diesel heater Playlist. Great video and explanation. Best I've seen. Deserves more views. Cheers from old George and Jane 🤠👧👫🇬🇧
A tip for the exhaust - put a water trap in it. This is like the U bend on a sink. Mine is made from a coil of a couple of turns of thin pipe. The water in the trap stops exhaust getting out but water can flow through it. The Exhaust is usually 22mm, the same as Plumbing fittings. I made my exhaust from 22mm copper pipe with compression fittings. It makes for a tidy robust solution.
Thanks, very good, saved me a lot of head scratching,I reckon you must have been the inspiration for the two guys on the phone giving advice on the fosters ads.
Thanks! This also worked for mine (I was doing all the same things wrong too). But you forgot to mention that EVERYTHING will be black with soot after you complete this cleaning job. Your clothes, your gloves / hands, your tools, your work space. Do this in clothes you no longer want. Over a tarp. With a white garbage bag (so you can see the soot). And have lot of shop rags handy. Don't touch your mom's couch after.
Great video 👍👍👍 my mate got changed 560.58 for a that same problem and it was a euro model??i just had a go on mine only took an hour😂😂😂good video cheers mate👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey thanks for your video. It got down to 10 degrees and my heater started blowing white heavy smoke. I watched your video and found out that my combination air intake was outstanding drawing ice cold air. I moved the pipe inlet to get inside air and the smoking completely stopped. Thanks for the great advice. I’m going to connect a 4” pipe to my heater air inlet pipe and connect it to the inside of my house. I think that will help if I supply preheated air instead of the 10 degree outside air. I haven’t seen anyone recommend that. Thanks again.
I am a mechanic that's certified on all Espar/Eberspacher products i broadly agree with this video. One thing I disagree with though, Every 2000 run hours you should replace that ignition mesh. If you are in a serious bind you can do as he described. The meshes are very cheap, even the espar official ones. Get the green gaskets as well. It's very important or you will be wasting a lot of diesel and having combustion products(carbon monoxide!!) getting into your heated area. LIVING area. You'll be breathing that stuff. Remove the glow pin with a 12mm wrench, use a small screwdriver and needle nose pliers to remove the mesh. All Bolts are torx T27 except for one holding the control box which is T20. If you are not confident about it, ask somebody you know or bring it in for professional service. Prolonged carbon monoxide causes brain damage and headaches. If you live in a bus/van and rely on these heaters... Please, do it right. For your own sake.
Thank you Adam for information , my Anbull heater basically same as yours is doing same thing on restart, after warmer temperatures outside warmup my garage So ill take mine apart check my glow plug clean it like you did and reassemble it, order parts gets irritating on 8kw heater getting right stuff is problem
How often and for how long do you recommend running it on full blast to prevent coking problems? Let's say it's always running on manual low because the room is well insulated and that's all you need for the temps you find yourself in? I understand that running it always on low will eventually give you coking issues, so how often would you blast it and for how long in this situation? I switched to the cheap diesel heater option from a Webasto gas heater, which did nothing but coke up. It was either replace it or check it into rehab.
Lived overseas and it was guys like this that got me first dreaming of seeing the world in a bus! Water separator BEFORE the heater will help too, but highly likely you already do that. Did you point the exhaust towards the sky for the video or is it mounted like that normally? Thanks for your time
My intake and exhaust have low spots in them on the one I have in the cab of my pickup. I drilled small holes at the lowest point and haven't had moisture issues. I don't run it for more than a few hours at a time though so your mileage may vary. I have ran it below -30°C a bunch of times and I figure if I was going to have problems with moisture that's when it would happen. I do frequently drive with it running but not at highway speeds. The end of the intake hose I have mounted fairly high up on top of a crossmember so it doesn't get much water spray or snow and when driving there shouldn't be much pressure trying to force through the system. My exhaust faces 90° to my direction of travel to prevent this as well
Hey I like the video it's straightforward nice job on the illustration an explanations thank you for empowering people to help themselves, when I say all over that way maybe we'll meet up and I'll buy you a beer I just wanted to verify that my thinking might be correct and your video verify that for me and showed me exactly what's inside that thing, I had some old fuel I use my mistake at any rate I shut it down with the old fuel mix in there and fired it up it wouldn't and yes that's green was probably set it up some pieces came out the next time I have chance for maintenance after this very cold weather I'll take it apart and clean that section, a few chunks of carbon came out after I started the unit and got it to start again there was combustion in the chamber I could hear it it was still remain smoking after I shut it off so I fired it up so there would not be a fire inside the unit too long it was enough to blow heat up into there and restart itself that one critical time we have Sub-Zero temperatures coming I live on a sailboat, this would have been horrible had I not been able to get this machine to run until I have better time to deal with it, after filling the cabin with smoke backwards through exhaust system which let me know that my exhaust has some leaks in it to begin with, many thanks
@@TheHowtoDad Good deal. Thanks to many of you guys I learn just about every thing there is to know before mine arrived ... but then, just when I thought I knew everything, another informative video.
Thank you for the video. I paid 100 usd 4 years ago for my heater off amazon and I use it to heat my garage in ohio winters and this is the first year it's throwing a error code and blowing white smoke so I'm sure this is the issue because I've never cleaned it..
had one for two years cleaned it twice but now need to look into a noisy fan bearing which maybe 625zz s once you have disassembled once it gets easier from then on spares are easy to come by too {:-) PAV UK
THANKS GREAT VIDEO ILL STRIP MINE DOWN SOON I HAD A BIT OF WATER IN FUEL LINE AND THAT DID CAUSE SMOKE B4 COULD YOU BLOW THE CHAMBER OUT WITH AIR LINE THROUGH AIR INTAK TO SAVE STRIPPING DOWN
Hi, I really enjoyed watching your video but I do have a question. On the heaters I have, after about 90 seconds the fuel pump starts and if monitoring from an app, the combustion temperature will rise. After about 4 minutes the glowplug will turn off. I have one heater that on many occasions the glow plug icon comes on and the glow plug draws power however the fuel pump never starts. On every occasion I have just powered off the unit, then back on and it has started correctly. My question is what tells the fuel pump to start? If it were a timer, I'm sure it would always start. If it is temperature, where does the heat come from apart from the heat of the glowplug? On a new heater or a serviced one, there will be no residual fuel in the combustion chamber and only the powered up glowplug, so what starts the combustion process? As I stated earlier if it were a timer, I'm sure it would always be a consistent start. The other strange thing is there is no error codes. It just sits there with the glow plug powered up for as long as I leave it. Other types of heater would use a pilot light that would operate a thermocouple and that is what starts the main gas valve (In the case of a boiler), but what starts the fuel pump on these heaters? Your animation shows the diesel going onto the hot mesh causes combustion, but if the pump is not running, where does the diesel come from? Thanks.
I hope you enjoyed and found this video helpful. If you have any questions or a suggestion, please leave a comment!

This is the most awkward position of an exhaust.
As you clearly shows the condensed water, will never come out.

I also had a lot of carbon buildup in that hole past the screen and used the same wire to open it up by poking a hole through the carbon.
Thanks a lot ! That was best heater vid I've seen in the whole internet ! Keep it UP ADAM!
This was a very good explaining video. With a very good tip with the glow top. Thanks!
Best explanation of heater operation!, thanks for the time and effort with your diagrams and animations , very concise
Awesome !
Great video. Why don't you mount the heater inside your caravan?
You seriously saved my butt. Getting ready to camp in the cold and could not for the life of me get my heater to work.
Best video I found for this problem! I've just cleaned mine in the same way and now have no white smoke. Thanks Adam great video !!
Great video! This video confirmed what I theorized the problem was. Tomorrow is my day off and I plan on taking this heater apart and cleaning it out.
Well jfc what happened?
@@007nadineL I cleaned out the burn chamber and replaced the screen with a new one. Works perfectly now.
Just came across your channel. I really like how you explain things and show them. Too many people water-board u with useless crap, lol. Look forward to checking out your other videos. Take care
Excellent video! I am a teacher here in the US, and I believe you have natural skills to communicate knowledge effectively.
Thank you for your time and effort to explain the functionality of this heater, good job 👍
Well done video Adam! One of the best for learning the operation which is key to being able to diagnose any issues. Bravo!
Thanks so much for the thorough video -- I had replaced the atomizer screen on my heater and didn't install it all the way... blocking the inlet hole and causing E10 codes. Nice animations, great video!
I have six of these heaters. And you nailed this problem and solutions. Good explanations!
Thank You
Best video I've seen so far about these little heaters. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this. Took mine apart had already 3 cups of built up soot. Cleaned and running great👍
This has got tobe the easiest explaination of what goes wrong, its solved my issues, thanks. Wayne
Well? Jfc what was the problem with yours?
Ffs
Great video! Many people have mentioned cleaning the chamber but few have demonstrated how to do it. For DIY novices I would suggest taking pictures as you disassemble the unit. Anyone can take something apart, but...😂 Cheers and thanks.
The tiny air intake hole for the glow-plug is the path for fuel leakage when the heater is operated on its side (the wrong side, with glowplug facing downwards - whereby the blown cabin air will eventually contain diesel fumes) - it's not 'leaky' or faulty, it's why correct positioning is key.
Thanks for the great tips. Even a cheaper heater can be repaired.
Liking and commenting hopefully will keep video up.
Thanks for the info, Adam. I'm going to have to watch this several times to make sure I'm picking up the right messages.
I used to have hair like yours, but i have pulled it all out trying to figure out this heater!!
lol
Mine has been billowing smoke from brand new and I installed it exactly as instructed.
What you said at the end might be my problem - too long and too thin of a power wire 🤔
If this is in fact my problem, I will definitely buy you a beer my friend 🍻
Great video, thank you 🙏
Screen was covering the air inlet after glow plug replacement. Just as you described. Thank you my friend.
❤ your video 👍
When you buy a new ignition mesh, get one that comes with an insertion tool. Ask me how I know to do this🙄😂
Excellent video bud. My heater is still in the mail but ill be far ahead of the game with a extra set of gaskets and glow plug.
Have you got it installed yet ?
One very important thing also are 'the bends', I fitted a new 24v in my wooden shed but would repeatedly flame out so I fitted my other also new 12v heater which did exactly the same thing. In both cases I used the same exhaust set up which had 2 90degree bends and 1 45degree bend (through a stainless steel exhaust bulkhead fitting). Removing the 2 90degree bends solved the problem. Perhaps these heaters might benefit from smooth bore exhaust pipe 🤔
Thanks mate. My heater is less than two months old, and is doing this, so I'll strip it down this week.
Best video ive ever watched well illustrated, thank for sharing and keep on posting very informative videos
Excellent video and easy to understand and follow. Thankyou
@@WhyAreWeForcedIntoHavingThis Fix much appreciated. Thanks!

Excellent. Thanks for taking the time to film and share.

It makes for a tidy robust solution.
bro that was so good! I dont even have a heater but Im subscribing!! Love how you break it all down and share you knowledge!!
God bless you brother!~
Get yourself a heater, you'll love it
Thanks, very good, saved me a lot of head scratching,I reckon you must have been the inspiration for the two guys on the phone giving advice on the fosters ads.
Thank you taking mine apart this week it smokes like a train ever since it ran out of ruel
Really helpful. Best video I found on diesel heaters and how they work. Thanks!
One thing I disagree with though,
Every 2000 run hours you should replace that ignition mesh.
Thanks for sharing this, I‘ll bear it in mind.
Fantastic video mate. Youve helped alot of folks with this. TH-cam at its best.
Thank you. I especially appreciated the animations.
Before you turn it off, or if you're running it consistently, once a day.
My exhaust faces 90° to my direction of travel to prevent this as well
Thank you. This is useful, concise information.
I haven't tried this yet, but I've heard that using the spray on oven cleaner works well in cleaning up the soot build up.
I just took mine apart and noticed my mesh was obscuring the intake so thank you!
Interesting video, surprised you put it out side where it can get wet if traveling.
I'm going to check my mesh tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes
So ... how'd it go?

Thank you for the video. I paid 100 usd 4 years ago for my heater off amazon and I use it to heat my garage in ohio winters and this is the first year it's throwing a error code and blowing white smoke so I'm sure this is the issue because I've never cleaned it..
had one for two years cleaned it twice
but now need to look into a noisy fan bearing

once you have disassembled once
it gets easier from then on

You just saved my life this winter!!!
THANKS GREAT VIDEO ILL STRIP MINE DOWN SOON I HAD A BIT OF WATER IN FUEL LINE AND THAT DID CAUSE SMOKE B4
COULD YOU BLOW THE CHAMBER OUT WITH AIR LINE THROUGH AIR INTAK TO SAVE STRIPPING DOWN
Hi, I really enjoyed watching your video but I do have a question.
Thanks.
Honestly fantastic video, just what I was looking for. Thanks for putting this together.
