Adult Beginner Violinist - 3 Years Progression

- 3 years has now passed since I took up the violin and it has honestly been one of the best things I have ever done. Learning the violin has changed my life and I’ve met the most incredible people along the way who I now call my close friends.
I started off my journey using Instagram as a practise diary and as the years went on I was able to visually see my progress. I regularly still post my practise videos on IG, you can follow me @peterquanmusic
In my violin journey I didn’t focus on being the quickest player as I was more interested in gaining a richer tone. From editing this video I was proud to hear my sound opening up each month that passed and how I was able to make my violin sing.
I love learning the violin as it is one of the biggest joys in my life. I hope this video inspires you and I look forward to the many more years to come!

Thank you very much for your kind words! Honestly age is but a number. I'm a part of an adults beginner orchestra and the majority of the members are as of the same age as you learning from scratch. They have all progressed wonderfully through their dedication and I just find that the most magical thing. All the very best with your journey ahead of you!

dont ever give up on it!
Before practicing always do your scales! It does wonders for your intonation.
I find a couple of pages of Sevcik seriously loosens up the hands and improves intonation.@@user-fd5kg9sk3q

wow your progress is fantastic! wish I had done some more recording of my progress since i started relearning(not an adult beginner but returning student) it's great to be able to look back and really see the improvement!

I’m currently a beginner and I’ve been playing since July 2022. I’m working on Suzuki book 4, on the third piece (Seitz concerto 5, 3rd movement), and it’s definitely one of the hardest pieces I’ve played

@@Lepewhi Yes I have, I've been a part of an adults beginner orchestra for over a year now and I'm proudly the lead for the second violins 😄 I 100% agree, there's nothing that can beat the feeling of making music with others. Is violin your first instrument?
I've been playing for 2 years now and it was tough in the beginning even tho its not my first stringed instrument

Thank you very much! My first instrument was piano which I studied for about 9-10 years. I'm also self-taught with guitar so I have a very musical background. Violin was still super tough at the beginning as you've also experienced but I'm enjoying every bit of the journey 🙂

Thanks, I used a mixture between the Canon 80D, my current phone (Google Pixel 7 Pro) and my previous phone (Sony XZ1)
are there any sources online that helped you? I want to go back but I played 20 years ago 😂
Hi there, I got a lot of inspiration from TH-camrs and from listening to a load of violin concertos on Spotify. I found online tutorials okay during my self-taught stage, but once I found an in person teacher I didn't use many online sources. Oh amazing, I'm always inspired by people who return to their music instruments. All the best!

Well done you for taking on an incredible journey! 🎻 My teacher thankfully taught me early which I'm very grateful for. It's hard for me to give much advice in this comment but one thing that really helped me was developing my finger knuckle flexibility. It also really helped me to lean my violin scroll between a wall (make sure to use a cloth to protect your violin), this really helps to take the weight off.

I would definitely recommend a teacher to progress. This has helped me dramatically and persistence is key!
How long was your self taught period?
2 years but very on and off
It's really good. Only bad thing I have to say is your fingers are resting way too high from the fingerboard. They need to travel much further than necessary to play a note. Could be more efficient.

I was 26 when I started to learn properly
At what stage did you switch from self taught to lessons?
I was self-taught for about 2 years before switching to my lessons. It was extremely on and off so I don't really count it
@@peterquanmusic That's impressive. I'm on day 1 of the violin. I played flute for 25 years though. I'm going to see if I can self teach through the holidays and see how that goes.

Anything is possible if you commit 😉 Vibrato was not something I started out being good at, I earnt it through hard work. Check out my Instagram if still in doubt
