How I Learnt to Vibrato as an Adult Beginner
This video was originally created for my Instagram followers (@peterquanmusic) to help our violin adult beginner community back in 2022. I’ve received a number of comments from you all to make a vibrato tutorial so this is a perfect opportunity to share my video on TH-cam.
As mentioned in the video I am no expert on vibrato as I am still learning and improving on it. I shared a selection of techniques and exercises I was taught and which I found helpful as an adult beginner.
I hope you will all find something useful in this video!

Adult Beginner Violinist | 2 Years Progression

Hi there, my name is Peter and I’m an adult beginner violinist from London. I first embarked on my violin journey during 2018 where I was self-taught for 2 years on a very on and off basis. During this time I was able to familiarise myself with the notes on the violin finger board. As a child I had piano lessons for 9 years and studied up to grade 6 (ABRSM). This gave me a slight advantage as I...

Very good. Now see if you can change fingers without stopping the vibrato and change bows without stopping the vibrato. After learning that, you can work on producing a wider variety of widths and speeds.

It's really good. Only bad thing I have to say is your fingers are resting way too high from the fingerboard. They need to travel much further than necessary to play a note. Could be more efficient.

The repetitive and slightly progressive changing sections are common to the baroque, especially Vivaldi and Bach. These sections sound a bit hectic, and I think that is the purpose behind them. They actually sound great. IMO.

First of all, i could watch this forever, such an entertaining video and your 'stage-presence' is soo good! You definitely belong in front of the camera and not just behind 👏 second, huge thanks for the shoutout 🤩 I'm glad it seems to be a useful tipp about the string crossings! Maybe focussing even more on the first stop might help further, even if it's the easiest crossing. But stopping there properly might make it easier for the other ones to work 🤔 Another thing my teacher never failed to tell me during practicing vivaldi spring is, that if some notes repeat, you are never allowed to make it sound the same. Mostly, the best way to do this in baroque is by repeating it much softer. You're already doing this in many passages but it might help further to actively think about it 😊 Lastly, I'm so impressed how good it sounds!! 👏 those hard passage on the last page, i could never 🤯 and you have such a fitting style for vivaldi, your playing is really great and you improved so much over the last year 👏 all in all, cant wait for the next video 😍
