- Ham and Egg Breakfast, Old Fashioned Southern Cooking
DO YOU REMEMBER that good old southern cooking?
When I was growing up, my granny was my favorite cook. My mama was also a fantastic cook, but there was just something about being in granny’s kitchen. We all gathered around the table when we went to her house. I have made it easy for you to learn how to cook like my granny and mama did with cooking tutorials for every recipe in our cookbooks. You can see how to order these by visiting us on our website. Oh, and no difficult-to-find or crazy ingredients! Just simple ingredients and delicious food. I am a Southern girl born and raised in Collard Valley in Polk County, Georgia. We went to church on Sunday, school during the week, and the grocery store on Friday, and that was our life: no vacations, no camping, just plain old southern country people.
If you learn to cook like my mama and granny, you will become one of the best Southern cooks. Thank you so much for being a part of this dream of mine.
NOW FOR THIS FAMILY RECIPE: (Vol. 2 Cookbook Recipe)
Biscuits like Granny’s
2 CUPS SELF-RISING FLOUR
1 PINCH BAKING SODA
3/4 -1 CUP WHOLE BUTTERMILK
1/4 CUP CRISCO SHORTENING
Blend Crisco and flour together with pastry blender, blending fork or with regular fork until shortening is pea sized. Add a dash of soda and mix well. Add buttermilk a little at a time until all flour is wet. Just until blended not runny at all. Note: Amount of buttermilk can vary depending on type you buy. Some are thin while others are thick. Sift flour out on counter and put out dough. Sift flour on top then knead 7-10 times. Pat dough about as high as biscuit cutter (3/4 to 1 inch high). Cut out biscuits and place in pan greased with shortening. Take buttermilk and pat tops of biscuits- bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes. When done flip upside down to keep bottoms from sweating. Enjoy!

I have never made homemade biscuits before and I don’t know why I am so intimidated by them!?!?! I really just need to get in the kitchen and make them!!! I watch you and Brenda Gandt and it looks so easy!
I’ve never thought about using butter when frying ham but it makes sense because butter equals flavor!!! I’m going to try it!!!!

Tammy, I leave my butter out on the counter all the time. It spreads so good like that, and the way I go through it, it never has a chance to get spoiled or rancid.

I love breakfast, we did my baby shower in the morning just so I could have breakfast. My favorite thing is a nice brunch where I can get a variety of breakfast items.
I think I’ll be making breakfast for dinner one night this week. I’m going to introduce my boys to biscuits and gravy 😋

Our fur-baby (Bella the Yorkie) loves collecting our ham steak bones. That little tongue slumps out the center in about a minute!
I love breakfast for dinner. REQUEST: would you do a series of videos showing us how to cook a whole ham and then separate videos on meals to make with the leftovers? Ham is one of the more affordable meats right now, but I’m only cooking for myself and I don’t know what to do with all the leftover ham after baking it so I’ve never bought one. I’ve made ham and bean soup, but I don’t have other recipes using ham. Thank you!

I do the same thing with my butter, always out! I just used my gravy while for the first time last night and I absolutely loved it. I am definitely going to make these sour cream biscuits as I no longer use the Crisco.

That ham that you were talking about that doesn't have to be refrigerated. I always put it in a bowl with some water for about 15 to 30 minutes before i cook it then rinse it in some water before i cook it. Helps to draw out some of the salt. Then make red eye gravy and add the ham back in just to get some of the coffee taste to it. Recipe from my sweet Mother in law. Your breakfast looks yummy! Love it for supper! Gotta try the sour cream biscuits never tried them. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Mrs Tammy I love breakfast for dinner also!! I sure am going to make those biscuits, I always use white lily self rising for biscuits and buttermilk and a ball of crisco grease. But I am definitely trying the sour cream. Here in Indiana I have searched in different towns and all I can find is the self rising, I need all purpose for my dumplings and pie crust and whatever else I can use the all purpose on. I had a my friend to bring me back both of them she went down to Tennessee and I am in need again. I may just have to order it from white lily. They don’t have it up north. At least not in Duluth Minnesota. I’ve been looking for it for years and years. Love it on fresh warm biscuits. Had it the first time in Mississippi many years ago.
