  • This video demonstrates how to use a Turnigy 9X transmitter and the 3 mode switch to control three different flight modes in the DJI Naza. In this case we do Attitude, Manual, and GPS flight mode but it can be configured for whatever you want. If you're looking to configure only two flight modes you can watch my previous video here:
    • How to Configure DJI N...
    If you're looking to use the 3 position switch to control your APM 2.5 flight modes then watch this video:
    • Turnigy 9x Transmitter...
    If you're looking for a Turnigy 9X transmitter you can find some pretty decent deals on eBay: fave.co/UpCACF
    I got mine for about $65 including shipping. You can always go to HobbyKing, but you have to worry about stock and international shipping.
    I hope this video is useful. Post a comment if you have any questions.

    Dennis,
    After a bad crash that bent a the metal rod that goes down the middle, losing a camera, a prop flying off ( which caused it obviously 'myfault') and losing a $40 camera. I rebuilt it with some spare parts.
    I decided to do a fail safe while losing TX signal and along with installing a new (to me) RX (X8R) and your videos she is back in the air with more confidence than before.
    Thank you again for all the great tutorials that you have provided this hobby! Extremely invaluable!
    Remy

      Thanks so much for the good words and sharing your experience. The thing I love about DIY builds is what we learn when we crash and how to get back up in the air again. Most Phantom owners are unable to say the same. Good luck with your rebuild and hope all goes well with it!

    Spencer, thanks for the feedback and glad to hear you have a Turnigy 9X on order. I've really enjoyed it after upgrading from my Spektrum transmitter. I would definitely recommend starting with the F450 and then upgrading to the TBS Discovery. The F450 flies much better for acrobatic maneuvers and then Discovery is designed more for stable FPV flight. You'll notice a difference in their flight characteristics because of the arm/motor positioning. Good luck with your setup!

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, that's the key and definitely make sure to set all points on the curve as the same value. This will give you a flat line and make sure the PWM is static for each switch mode.

    Michael, thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear you're having problems. The interesting thing about this setup is that I don't have ch6 assigned to anything in the Turnigy 9X Aux menu. I know that sounds absurd and to be honest I don't know why it works that way :) Let me ask you this...are you using a fresh profile on your 9X or did you modify an existing one? I'll be glad to help you get this resolved as I'm still trying to understand all the different features of the 9X.

    The DJI NAza light also has a three way switch on the other side. Off position, course lock, home lock. Can you please help or give any ideas on how to configure those switches on the 9X radio?

    I think you should be able to get it to work with the TH9X although I've never used one. Let me know about your flight mode (heli vs plane) and maybe that will help.

    I'm using ppm and for some reason my channel 7 is linked to Control mode switch and my pit curve is linked to X2. I managed to mess around in the mix settings and get 3 position switch to channel 7. However i can only get as far as Atti. eg. I have it set to atti failsafe and manual, Could someone help its really frustrating.

    Hi i have a turnigy 9x too. The manual of naza says i need to use a new model in the radio as AIRPLANE mode.... i see you are using the HELI mode... did you find some problems? is not a problem use HELI mode? I'd like to use heli mode too because is more simple for set the switches on the radio...

      ***** I switched to ACRO mode a while back, which is just a different template than HELI. Now I'm flying with the Taranis and configure most of my setups from scratch. Here is a video I did a while back that talks about some of the differences between ACRO and HELI on the Turnigy 9X. Hope it helps:

    GOOD DAY, NEED HELP, RODE A QUAD TBS FRAME WITH NAZA LITE AND RADIO Turnigy 9X, FIZ SETUP RADIO AND MODES OF FLIGHT ALL RIGHT, I flew WITH QUAD PERFECT ... BUT THERE BEGINS THE PROBLEM WHEN I hung up and I called again did not select MORE THE FLIGHT MODES AND PARENT NOT GUN OVER ANY WAY ... WHAT CAN BE ??? I checked CABLES, I replaced the receiver, reconfigured AND NOTHING HAPPENS, THE LED OF NAZA IS IN tx signal lost ... WHAT SHOULD I DO ... help me please (Message translated by Google)

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a strange one. I would suggest creating a new model in your Turnigy 9X and re-binding. Then setup your flight modes again and see if you can get the U slider to work when moving your switch. Let me think about this some more and let you know if I come up with anything else. If you figure anything out please let us know.

    Hello. I've tried to configure U channel to switch fly modes using 3-position switch, but have faced an issue, that the value transmitted to NAZA is never low enough to reach the GPS section and highlight it as blue. So, the transmitted values are in a range from -336 to 1000. I've set sub-trim to -120 and e.point to 120%, tried to reverse signal but it is always not lower than -336. So, I'm able to configure switching between Atti, FailSafe and Manual modes only. What could be the issue? I have standard TX (as you have) and 9x8c v2 2.4GHz full range receiver together with NAZA-M V2 + GPS.

(I havnt tested out of range) :) but wouldn't want a fly away :( In this video from Terence Chan, th-cam.com/video/yKQd_Vu10lE/w-d-xo.html he has it set up perfectly.I tried his way but dont have failsafe

    Hi Dennis, I'm having trouble in setting up my 9X with the Naza M Lite. On the Naza site it tells you to use an aero as base model, but there are no pitch curves on the aero and every time I use the heli model, it necer saves it. Have you any suggestions please?? Also I have the Qbrain 4 ESC and does this work with the Naza do you know??? Sorry so many questions, but I'm fed up of pulling my hair out and shouting at the pc!!!!

    You're most definitely welcome. I appreciate your feedback. I've yet to fly a hexacopter but definitely plan on doing so this year. How do you like the KK2? I was thinking about getting one (I used to have a KK from HobbyKing) just for acrobatic flight. When I switched to Naza and APM it was almost like all the challenge had been taken out of flying, which is good if you're doing FPV. Do you have a remote video start/stop for the T2i or do you start filming on the ground and stop when you land?

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hear you Steve. Unfortunately when it comes to servo reversing and setting endpoints this varies from system to system. I would make sure you know the process of setting things up and then dialing in your settings. You should be able to watch your sliders adjust as you change endpoints. Then just settle on something that gets you in the right segment (GPS Atti, Manual, Failsafe, etc). I hope that makes sense.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Make sure you calibrate the GPS properly. I have a video that shows how to do that. As for RTH I recommend setting up a switch on your TX to trigger Failsafe mode. You'll know that you're in Failsafe mode when the slider in the assistant lights up blue on Failsafe. And then when you switch to Failsafe when your quad is on the ground you'll see a different LED. Also, make sure you have 6 or more satellites before you arm your NAZA so it can come back home to a precise location.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish I could be of more help, but don't have the 9XR. If you google "turnigy 9xr manual" the first link should be a PDF manual. Here is an excerpt:
    ii. HALF: The output is either 0 or the value describes in “weight”. This is controlled by the
    switch.
    iii. FULL: Same as MAX but the value is “-weight” if the switch is off or “weight” if the switch
    is on. MAX and FULL can be a little confusing.
    Look in the examples section for, well, examples :)
    Be sure to check the examples section.

    Justin, I was able to mess with this over the weekend and got it working so hopefully it will work for you. Check out my latest video titled "DJI Naza Forced Failsafe Using Turnigy 9X Gear Switch Channel 5 Mix...". It's currently uploading but should be available in about 20 minutes. Let me know if you have any questions or if anything needs clarification. The Turnigy 9X documentation sucks so a lot of this stuff is trial and error!

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If your budget can afford it go with the NAZA V2. There is only one GPS that works with the V2. If you're on a tight budget then go with the NAZA Lite. The NAZA V1 has been discontinued, but I'm not sure what that means and if they'll continue to support it. I fly with the NAZA V1 and if I were in the market I could go V2.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    To configure different flight modes you'll need to set it up with your NAZA connected to the computer and your transmitter binded to your NAZA. After you do this once you shouldn't need to do it again. DJI released a new iPhone app that allows you to do some configuration of the NAZA over bluetooth, but I'm not sure if you can setup flight modes with it.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmm. Not 100% sure what's going on, but can you tell me what flight mode you're configured for? My quads are setup for Heli mode and I've noticed that based on which mode you configure (Plane, Heli, Acro) will dictate what you see in your settings. If that doesn't help then let me know and I'll see what else I can come up with.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Dominick, I heard from solider53flyer that you got up in the air this week. If that's true then congrats! Just to make sure we're on the same page did you hook up CH6 to your U port? You mentioned CH5, but it should be 6. Also, I got your message just now about getting on the phone. Lemme know if you'd still like to do that. Good luck!

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good to know. I like the concept of flicking up to send your quad back home. But let me ask this. Does that mean you have to start with your TX in the failsafe position when you power up? I ask because my T9X beeps at me unless I power up with my sticks in their proper positions.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The way you're going on and on about the 9XR sure makes me want to pull the trigger :) I definitely see one in my future. Failsafe is generally receiver dependent. What module are you flying with? I know the FrSky has it built in...but not sure if they have a 9XR module. Will check.

    No. If you want to use your gear channel then that would be necessary but for just the 3 position switch you don't need to. I recently posted a video of 6 flight modes using both the 3 position switch and the gear switch in combo.

    Hi Dennis, did you have to adjust any mixes to achieve this? My Turnigy 9x does not bind the AUX3 (3 channel switch) to any channel it looks like you have to mix it with a knob.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Dennis, Have you looked at the new Assistant software, you can choose 3 modes at the end, the trick would be to figure out how to access a 4th function mode using the 3ps +1 other switch. So it would have GPS, ATTI, Failsafe and flick another switch and get Manual mode. Its beyond me, but maybe you can figure it out, without your Videos, my copter would be still sitting on my desk! Thanks

      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the kind words. I haven't messed with the new Assistant but will be soon when setting up a buddy's quad. What do you think about GPS, ATTI, & Manual then the other switch being failsafe? So you have your 3 flight modes with one switch and then failsafe completely separate? I only ask because a few others have mentioned this configuration to me and asked if I would do a video. Not sure how it would be done but am going to try my best to figure it out. Take care.

    Hi Dennis, i tried to do as it is done in this video but I have 2 issues:
    1) I cannot assign F.mode to any channel. I supposed it had to be mixed to another switch. How am I doing this?
    2) In NAZA menu when I move throttle also U change as well. I've done a wrong setting or what? I am lost here.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Watch the video again and it explains both of these issues. For #1 this is done via mixing and make sure you listen to the part about CH6 on our receiver going to the U port on the NAZA. For #2 watch the part where I show setting the pitch curve to a fixed value so it doesn't rise with your throttle. Good luck and if you have any more problems check out www.garagepilots.com

      Thanx so much for your help, you know something I discovered that my naza lite was corrupted, and I attached a brand new one everything went fine and I got the FC started and armed, loooool I was trying for about one day to solve this issue, is there a way to know if the FC is working or not although all the flight mode led light works as it should according to the mode you are at, but the problem was with arming and disarming, It really got on my nerves but thats fine I learned a lot, but I am wondering if the reason that the FC stopped working cause of the ESC which comes with BEC and that I forgot to pull out the red wires and connected all 4 with the red wires on, do you think that was the reason?

    Right, and if you look at page 38 in the Naza User Manual this is the breakdown:
    X1: For gimbal pitch control or for gain tuning
    X2: For D-Bus (S-Bus compatible) or for gain tuning or for IOC switch
    X3: For voltage monitor (Connect with VU V-SEN port)
    I was just curious what you were using X1 and X2 for since they can be multi-purpose. Not sure how to overcome the problem you described just yet....other than opting not to use X1 and X2 while you get this set up.

    Sorry, for some of you this will be stupid, but im a noob with this.
    I know for some Nazas you need to have a computer connected to wifi to change modes.
    To change, do you need to have your computer next to you, or is it not required.
    If it isnt required, then I will definately get this, but if it is.... then its just a waste of money for me D:
    Thanks for reading,
    Please reply soon :D
    P.S: this video was realy helpful

    Dennis, I should have mentioned earlier that my receiver is suspect. I had a crash - broke a propeller and an arm. Added GPS while awaiting parts but can't get motors to fire up. Transmitter is OK - works on another quad. Today I got Naza Assistant error messages I couldn't dismiss though the Naza assistant responded to the transmitter, stick movements etc. Nonetheless the receiver is suspect and might be causing the odd behaviour reported earlier.
    Mike.

    Nice clear video, Dennis. An elegant approach. But... I can't get it work. Probably done something wrong. I have Turnigy 9x with V2 software, and GPS connected.
    I made sure that U of the Naza is plugged into ch 6 of the Turnigy receiver, but I can' get the pointer under GPS/Fail-safe etc in Naza assistant to move when adjusting the pitch curve. One question - what do you have ch 6 assigned to on the Turnigy? The options that I'm offered are: NULL, THRO HOLD, GEAR, PIT TRIM,HOV THRO, HOV PIT,

    What I normally recommend when things are acting in an unexpected way is to start a new model profile and work through these settings. A quick check is to make sure you're not set in Mode 1, which would make your throttle stick on the right where your elevator stick is...assuming you are used to Mode 2 transmitter configs.

    Good News! Got a new receiver - no better. Think the problem was corrupted Naza firmware. Now all OK. 3 way switch as your set-up. And gear switch connected to X2 via channel 8 to control "Intelligent Orientation Control" under Autopilot in Naza Assistant. This feature is a major reason for my purchase of the GPS module.

  • @mgg942
    @mgg942 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Progress. First, when I rechecked, I was in 7 not 6. I can get your result with U connected to 6, BUT not with X1 and X2 connected to 7 & 8 'cos then the throttle stick also affects the flight mode indicator. I noticed that you do not have anything plugged into Turnigy ports 7, 8 and 9, so no connections to Naza X1, X2 or X3? Is there a reason why not?
    Mike.

    Hello Dennis. This video was a huge help. I have the DJ I naza lite and a F550 kit with the Turnigy 9x radio. I could not figure out how to configure my three-way switch and then the failsafe with the other gear switch. After watching both of your videos I now have that done.

    Hey Dennis, I noticed this video is pretty new, but my 9x doesn't have Pit Curve. I think this is done through the Prog.Mix settings but I'm not sure. My 9x just came in a week or two ago, so it should be current firmware but my menus don't match. Any advice?

      Hi, good question. Let me work on a video this week that details how to do this. I've run into a lot of confusion about this and there are several others that are having problems as well. Hopefully I can get a video together that will clarify this. Thanks for asking and following my channel.

    I hear you loud and clear. I chose the T9X because it was cheap and there were a lot of pilots using them online, but I'm really leaning towards a Taranis or Futaba TX next. I really like the design of the Futaba transmitters. Congrats on your purchase!

      QuadNet Hardy I don't think you can add sonar to the NAZA M. Please correct me if I'm wrong and share a link. You can get something like that with APM or Pixhawk.

    Justin, I'll see what I can find out but let me ask a Q about your setup. I'm not sure what exactly this means:
    "rebadgered unit = FS TH9X PCM1024"
    Does that mean you're running the FlySky module? Also, do you know if you have the stock firmware running or something else?

    Hi dennis
    Thank you so much for showing us how to set the radio up
    But im having a problem with my rutter instead of lining up in the middle and being green its stays 3 marks towards the right, i adjusted the sub trim but it is not centering i did calibration but no help
    So please help me out
    Thanks

      @dennisbaldwin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      eldhose nariyelil That's strange. I'm not sure what's going on. If you can't get there with your subtrims then maybe you should do a TX calibration. I know you can do this with the Taranis and it looks like this is possible with the T9X: dl.btc.pl/kamami_wa/hk_8992_14.pdf
      Good luck and let us know how it goes.

    having trouble actually linking the 3 pos switch to control that. It is linked on the receiver to channel 7 (6 for some reason links to the throttle).

    • @dennisbaldwin

      Joe Anthing If CH6 is linked to throttle you may be in HELI mode. Try switching to ACRO mode. Hopefully this helps a bit:

    Zach, I appreciate the feedback and am glad to hear you're in the air. FPV is amazing and I wish I could do more of it! Yeah, I've been looking at the QAV stuff for a while. It's probably one of the best FPV platforms for the money. Let me know how it goes and if you get a chance check out our community at garagepilots . com. Would be great to have you over there. Take care.

    I did it differently. In airplane mode, I used the the program mix 1, 2 & 3 using the Gear as the Master and the Flap (three position) as the slave. The down position of the Gear switch with each three position switch position for each of the mixes sets the NAZA mode, GPS, Atti, Manual. With the Gear switch in "UP" position all three of the three position switch positions goes to "Fail Safe". In that way I can just flip the the gear switch for "Oh Crap Mode" to recover.

    following your video, and for some reason when I have the channel 6 plugged in to the U port on the Naza. The three position switch and the elevator level on my TX both move the control mode on the naza software. Using the pitch curve does not move the slider. Very frustrating. I've switched RX and reset my TX. If I connect the U port to any other channel on my RX this doesn't happen. Any ideas on why this is happening.

    KK2 is NOW performing well but one needs to flash 1.4 or 1.5 firmware to get Auto Stabilize to function properly. I went to LazyZero to get firmware. My next step is to rebuilt quad as an H copter to accommodate the FPV and test Gimbal with lighter Kodak Sport Video Camera. One I have the KK2 talking to the gimbal and learn FVP issues and feel confident I'll move on the the Heavy Lift Hex. It seems like two steps forward one step back.

    Hi Dennis, Thank you for giving the demos, I am presently learning the ins and outs of multirotors and have finally decided on using a NAZA M with GPS with my hex camera copter (under construction). Presently using a 450 quad with KK2 with Turnigy 9x learning to fly multirotors (RC pilot from 1970s). Orientation is my biggest problem. Once I master the basics including FPV I'll move on to the Hex. with a Canon T2i video.

  • @FloridaWeddingFilms
    @FloridaWeddingFilms 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The KK2 now performs well at holding altitude manually (no barometer or GPS) So my KK2 FPV will not be any low altitude flying. I'm still learning about vibration, balancing etc.
    I plan on just starting T2i video as it runs 12 minutes max and my eCalcopter specs say I'll get well under that from Quad or Hex. As a video editor this is a non issue.

    That's interesting to hear. I haven't wired up my gimbal or remote gains in conjunction with the 3 way switch so it sounds like there may be a conflict. Do you have X1 and X2 setup for remote gains or are you using X1 for gimbal pitch control? For X3 I have that wired to my VU so that doesn't factor into the equation here.
