- I purchased my Turnigy 9X from eBay so be sure to check there: fave.co/UpCACF
I've received several requests about configuring the Turnigy 9X 3-way auxiliary switch to control different flight modes. This video shows how to set this up with my APM 2.5 quadcopter, but it should be fairly similar for the DJI Naza.
This was an experimental configuration that seems to be working fairly well. The key is to map channel 6 on your Turnigy receiver to port 5 on your APM board. The video demonstrates the setup.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments and I hope this helps!
You're welcome and thanks for the feedback. I plan on doing a Naza one soon as I've received several emails asking about it as well.
I am just dropping you a line to let you know that you are doing a very good job at all your videos. To me at the moment the AMP 2.5 videos are very informative and very well explained i have been keen on getting a AMP 2.5 but at the moment i will keep watching and learning keep up the good work.
Jason, I appreciate the kind words and glad this helped. Merry Christmas to you as well!
Patrick, that's great to hear. I started to worry a bit that I should be in Acro mode after your message :) Glad things are working out and I appreciate you following up.
Thank you so much for that video! I had no idea what I had to do to make the 3 position switch work! I spent a lot of time searching and your video nailed it! THANK YOU!
I was going to break this down a little further for you, but I see in your follow-up comment you got it working. Great job and glad this helped!
No problem. Thank you for the feedback and I'm glad it helped. It took me a while to figure out so I wanted to make sure I documented it :)
Excellent vid and instructions! It worked perfectly and continues to work perfectly for me on my two FlySKy TH9X. Thanks for sharing! Video's like yours have taken me from nood crashing every flight to noob having fun flying.
Great stuff, all your videos have help set me up for my aquacopter and APM 2.5! Thanks!
This method is brilliant! I spent so many hours trying to activate my 3 Mode SW for my NAZA and this just works as a charm.
Thanks man!
Matthias De Brée No problem. Thanks for watching and the feedback.
it helped a lot Dennis. im looking forward to more of your videos! I'm from old school type equipment so when you share your time and knowledge with us it is an admirable thing. keep up the good work
Thanks for confirming it can be done. It's much appreciated! I will check out your motor mount landing gear in here in a little bit. Very glad that you're sharing these designs! Take care.
You nailed it. Glad to hear it's working for you now.
Mark, no problem at all. I appreciate the feedback. Take care.
Hey, thank you so much for the kind words. It's very much appreciated. Glad this got you up and running. I'm a n00b too and learning as I go. Just wanted to share odds and ends as I learn them. What are you currently flying?
Thanks for the feedback. If you have a 3 position switch on your DX6i I would think you can pull this off. Good luck getting it configured.
Chris, yeah it sounds like you got it figured out! The only other thing I can suggest, and you probably already know this, is to make sure you have your 9X configured to put the gear switch on CH5 or whatever channel you want. This is done in the AUX-CH settings menu. Then you need to tell your KK board that you want to use the AUX channel vs arming using your sticks. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any problems. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks Mark. A bunch of trial and error got me to the point where it worked. Digging around in forums and putting it all together. Anyway, I'm glad it's working for you.
Hi Dennis,
THANK YOU !!! I´m a noob and have rip my hair, trying to solve this.
These 11 minuets made all the difference!
By the way, the way you explain things are very nice and easy.
You tell it like we are 6 years old, but not haughty or sniffy.
Awesome to hear and thanks for the feedback! Interesting thought about having the gear channel wired up for the RTL override. I'll have to look into this. BTW, I approved your RTL video response on my other vid. Nicely done.
Thanks for the heads up. A buddy told me about a howto in the ArduCopter wiki so I was able to figure it out this week and just posted a vid. I appreciate you looking out for me :) Hope all is well.
Glad to hear it. Thanks for the feedback. Now just how wet have you gotten your aquacopter??? Just curious if it's as cool as it looks.
This has opened my eyes. Thank you!!!!! Where does it ever say this in any of the instruction manuals.
No problem. I know what you mean about instruction manuals. I've been through them several times and end up having to mess around with the TX to figure it out. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much, wow that's one of the first tutorials I've seen that are thorough and don't skip over important parts that the uploader "assumes" you know lol.
Thank you so much man. This saved my bacon working with a turnigy 9x and a multiwii pro flight controller 😊
Great video. I was going nuts configuring my 3 way switch on my FS-TH9X. Thanks.
+MrPolymers No problem at all. Glad to hear it helped.
Really helpful tutorial Dennis! Thank you for sharing this.
Aaand like everything, 'this afternoon' turned into 'a week later'.
But i finally got a chance to fly, and my quad flies better than ever! Who'd've thunk flying a heli in heli mode would make it so smooth?
Also the 3 position switch works a charm. Thanks heaps!
Patrick, that's interesting to hear and I will definitely start looking into this. I have had no problems at all flying in heli mode, but I haven't tried to do anything fancy like loops or rolls yet. Are you asking specifically about acrobatic flight or just if it's possible to fly in heli mode, which I do all the time.
Hi Dennis. I looked through several Forums to get F-Mode Switch active, but neither worked! THanks for Heli and Pitch CV idea!
Thanks for your generous response mate. I have done every thing except solve the problem of the Yaw I center the servo for the home made yaw mechanism in which I have the servo lying down on its side in a direct drive mode using two nylon hinges with the servo gear head lined up with the hinge pin. No binding, strong tensile andslick, but as soon as I turn on the board, It goes one way and stays there. The center is gone and no proper control may be had. Don't quite understand ...yet!
where is the previous video that you were referring in this video? I couldn't find it. Will be glad if you can share the link. Thank you.
Your are a very trusted source Dennis.
robvaldy1 Thanks so much. I appreciate the kinds words.
That's a great question. I'm not certain how to do it, but when I get some free time this week I'll take a look. Are you using the T9X for your transmitter?
Hi Dennis, followed your advice here and this works perfectly for the APM 2.5+, another good job :)
Also I set AUX-CH 7 in the 9x TX to be GEAR and had the RX CH 7 connected to APM input 7 so that I can use the GEAR switch to fire an emergency RTL overide. Worked OK but had an issue trying to disarm (quad had landed, motors still spinning, flight mode to stabilise throttle down. Switched off GEAR but motors still running, so flicked flight mode switch to loiter and back to stabilse to fix).
With out a doubt, a fantastic video..... I am quite creative and sharp with this stuff, but this takes me to what I could not figure out!! Cant wait to Loiter tomorrow!!! Thanks!
Mike Davis Glad to hear it. Hope your loiter goes well. Good luck and keep us posted.
Keep it up very interesting explanation. Always checking your channel. Thanks for the good explanation. Happy XMAS.
No I just meant flying at all. I was warned not to have my 9x in Heli mode. Well that's good to hear. I've been wanting to get that 3 pos switch working for ages. I'll switch my Tx to Heli mode this afternoon!
Thanks heaps!
Thank you this video was very helpful. No one one TH-cam showed how to use the 3 position switch on stock firmware.
Wow, very clear and professional explanation of this process.
Appreciate the feedback.
thank you thank you thank you! i can usually just figure stuff out but this was a real real pain to set up, you made my life alot easier haha THANKS!!! now i can use gps hold and return better!
Thanks for the time you put into helping us!
Lion Silver My pleasure. I'm by no means an expert and just share this stuff as I learn it. Thanks for the feedback.
If it's spinning around have you looked at your yaw PIDs? In config.h look for STABILIZE_YAW_P and STABILIZE_YAW_I
thanks I have the APM I haven't set up this just yet but that help me a lot I didn't know how to do it with my turnigy 9x thank you.
juan sanchez You're welcome. I appreciate you watching.
Dennis, I watch your videos all the time. Great job! I have a Pixhawk build, and using a ppm encoder. All channels (1 thru 8) are going from the Turnigy receiver into the encoder, and a signal wire going out of the encoder, into the RC port of the Pixhawk. This doesn’t allow the ability to go from ch6 to pin5 to operate the flight mode. Next to the PPM Signal out pins of the encoder is another set of pins saying AUX. Would it work to connect the AUX to pin5? I’m stumped. Thanks, Joe
+Offroad Footage , I have the same configuration as you. I just managed to solve it by swapping cables for CH5 and CH6 in the receiver.
Thanks Dennis, just got this working on my bixler2 flaps with Tgy 9x and frsky TX.
Mode1=Flaps and Mode2=extreme flaps that act more as a air brake. So to answer pczekalski's question, Yes! :) However you need to be in helli mode and not glide or acro as far as i can tell. 1 chan using Y harness and servo reverser.
On a unrelated note Dennis I published a none tilt motor mount/landing gear that can be used any multirotor if you ever try and build yourself another. Thingiverse thing 159341
I'm not sure this is possible with the standard firmware. I know this is possible with er9x or at least I've read it is. I'll dig around and see what I can find about the stock firmware and will hopefully do a howto with the 6 modes in er9x. I will be upgrading to er9x this weekend hopefully.
I would say it's really close, but now I've put it on my mini quad and am starting all over again. The reality is you can definitely get there, but the path is bumpier. Hopefully I can document how to get it as dialed in as the Naza for others to learn from. If you want to out of the box stability and handling then Naza is the way to go. What are you currently flying with?
As of right now I have my 3 mode switch and gear switch configured. So that gives me 5 channels in addition to the 4 standard (A,E,T,R) and my T9X only supports 9 channels. Maybe your TX supports more? What are you looking to do?
thank you , your videos are well explained and informative.
Thanks for watching. I responded to your other comment, but yes I believe it's possible from what I've read.
THANK YOU!!!
After MUCH googling and youtubeing, this is the first that actually helped me! I wanted to use a 6-channel receiver instead of the bulky included 8-channel, and all other instructions made me end up with the 3-position switch on channel 7 somehow, using PLANE-setup and mixings! Haven't tried it live yet, but it seems to work on the bench with my new NAZE32 and CleanFlight!
Now, the question is, can I use channel 5 for anything useful still, or will that screw up anything? Could I i.e. set the gear-switch for arming or a beeper (lost model alarm) or LED's?
Preben Stub Thanks for the feedback and great question. To be honest I'm not entirely sure. It's been a while since I messed with my Turnigy 9X and don't recall ever trying this. I would assume the channel is not available since it's setup as AUX, but don't quote me on this. If you test let us know what you find out!
Dennis Baldwin I have now upgraded my Turnigy 9X to ER9X Firmware, and managed to get the 3-position switch to channel 5 without any problems, and the possibility to put any other switch on channel 6. Works great! Don't know why I didn't upgrade earlier! :-) Thanx again!
No problem at all. I'm glad it helped and that we're able to benefit from the new school equipment nowadays :) Thanks!
Blair, do you have your T9X setup in ACRO or HELI mode? I normally ask that first because sometimes that dictates that TX's behavior.
Nice! Good video too, nice production.
Thanks Tommy. Glad to hear it. If you have any video suggestions in the future please let me know. Take care.
Great vid.
Can i use this setting into my WALKER QR X350?
Thank you
I wonder what's going on with your transmitter??? Have you had any luck since you posted this? Also, not to answer your question with a question, but how do you know V2 firmware vs V1? Just so I understand what's happening you can decrease your H point on ID1 from 100% but when you save (hit Menu) it doesn't take? Do any of your other curve points for ID1 save?
Hi,
Its a scratch built wooden H-frame.
The purpose is a photo platform, so I want to have it secure and not fun :-)
Since I use Arduflyer 2.9.1b, I think my problems are vibrations and I will try to get rid of those first. My Board is solid mounted on the frame today.
Ah man, thank you. So im wondering if my Naze has a similar set up so I can get this set up on my 9x
DriveAndFlyRC No problem. I'm thinking about getting a Naze as I've heard such good things about them. If I do figure this out with the Naze I'll definitely share it. Take care.
That's a real good tip. It's like the "oh crap" switch that you can flick down when you get in trouble. Thx.
Hi, what cables did you use to connect the transmitter and reciever?
Dennis you can tie the Gear switch to the Three position switch on the 9x and get 6 flight modes. It was several months ago since I figured it out so its a foggy secret as to how but it is definitely possible.
Great video Dennis ~ Thanks ! Can you tell me how to assign one switch to operate 2 or 3 others please ? I have put expo on Rudder ~ Elevator ~ Aileron so I can switch it on or off but would like to be able to control it with one switch only if possible ? Manual is next to useless so any help will be most welcome ! Thanks again Dennis ~ I now have 6 flight modes configured after following your very easy to follow video !
+Eddie Lloyd Thanks so much for the good words. Unfortunately I no longer have my Turnigy 9X so I can't recall how to do what you're asking. Maybe someone in the group will know. Good luck with your setup.
Great question. I don't think that's possible, but will look into it further. What I do know is possible, if you're flying with APM 2.5, is to set one of the flight modes to auto (waypoint navigation). As part of your "mission" you could tell the first waypoint to be at a certain location and altitude. You could have each switch position respond to a certain location and altitude. So you're sort of faking the "action". I haven't done this, but will investigate. Neat idea.
So after tweaking more settings did you end up getting the APM 2.5 on your quad close to the naza v2 in stability?
Thanks for the video but just have a quick question, for some reason in my mission planner my channel 5 alters with the pitch as opposed to the throttle. Do you have any idea why this is? Thanks
There is a way to check them but I can't remember how, but I picked it up at Hobby king and just know it is, yes the rest do stay but when I went back to check it all the numbers and the ID1 went back to stock setting?
Dennis, I was wondering about the gear switch for the Auto Level on the KK2.0 LCD board. I am using a 9X, so is it simply a matter of setting the Aux#5 to Gear Switch and have the Ch 5 from the Rx connected to the auto level input on the KK2? This may sound like a simple Q but I am mired in the process of my first Tri (actually 1st RC airframe) and have my hands full. Thanks, I am a new subscriber. You have some great experience that you have shared with the RC community. Good on ya Mate!
What do you mean by "throttle is on the left". Are you talking about your TX? If so, that's how I fly...setup as Mode 2. Or are you referring to something different?
Awesome video man, I have the B revision RX/TX and if I use this method, it does give me three flight modes, but it makes my quad unresponsive to roll input. Not sure if you experienced that or not, but I followed your instructions to the letter with minor variations to my pwm values because my TX has slightly different pwm ranges.
+Qdoggus I haven't experienced that before, but good to know. I'll need to revisit and see if I can update the video with the latest rev. Thanks.
Absolutely man, you're welcome.
Hi Dennis, quick question for you if you don't mind. I have only used DJI flight controllers and I'm looking at getting the new HKPilot 2.7 however I have a lot of questions. What I'm trying to figure out is that the website says you can link this up to a tablet, have you done this before? I'm curious if you can modify waypoints out in the field? I'm pretty much just trying to wrap my head around the whole mission planner/ waypoint tracking in itself. Do you bring the laptop/ tablet with you, do you need to be connected to wifi? Do you have to to waypoint tracking planning prior or can you change on the fly? I apologize for all of the questions but I know you're smart and probably have some great answers. Thanks Dennis!
Mike Niederlander Yes you can link it up to a tablet if you have the telemetry radios. You must also make sure your tablet supports the on-the-go cable otherwise you'll be forced to use Bluetooth, which I like better (no wires!) Here's a vid I did that talks a bit about it:
DroidPlanner Telemetry for APM 2.5 using Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and Bluetooth Module
Yes you can modify waypoints in the field. I plan on doing an in-depth video on DroidPlanner soon. Will definitely cover this. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
excellent video on set up for multiple flight modes on a single switch. Maybe I won't have to upgrade my ole favorite DX6i radio to get access to all the various flight modes I want to use!
Hello.
Thanks for this informative video.
Can I ask if you know how to get 4 flight modes from a 3P switch on the 9X, or even if it's possible ?
I have a flight stabilizer for an aircraft that needs 4 different signal pulse widths all on the same Chanel. I know that would require a mix of some kind, but I'm not sure how this might work.
Thanks again.
***** Thanks for watching and the feedback. The only way I know to get more than 3 flight modes is this setup:
th-cam.com/video/sHOAMyFRGiM/w-d-xo.html
It's somewhat depending on your flight controller. I wasn't able to do this with the NAZA and only the APM from my tests. Best of luck and let us know how you get along.
***** You can set up to 6 modes combining 3-mode switch and AIL D/R switch in mixers.
OMFG, your a genius! I was just about to throw out this tx! Thanks sooooo much!
+Trent Thompson No problem. Glad it helped.
I will be using my 9x for my new hunter Vtail quadcopter... what mode should i setup? Heli or Acro? Thanks in advance
Lance bourque I've recently been flying in ACRO mode. If you want more info about why check out this video:
Turnigy 9X Heli and Acro Flight Modes Explained
Hope this helps and good luck with your setup.
I have a question. I have ch5 linked to my pitch, so in theory when i pitch the PWM is changing on ch5, which is gonna change my flight modes when i use pitch isnt it? Im in the flight mode configuration and i can see when i move my pitch stick the flight modes are changing aswell as when i select the 3 different switch modes. Any ideas? Cheers great video, For me i had to edit 2 on the point for each NOR ID1 and ID2,
have you worked out how to get more switchs working with the arducopter system.
Dennis is it possible to assign actions? Like start an action at certain altitude?
Real quick.. I noticed that pin 8 on apm is for flight modes why do you use turnigy ch6 and amp ch5? I'm glad you did..just want to know you found it out so I could be smart too
Hey there. I've only used CH5 on my APM so I'm not sure how you've got it working with CH8. If you see the docs here:
code.google.com/p/arducopter/wiki/AC2_ModeSwitch
You'll notice that it says:
"The switch can be set to any receiver channel, but the receiver output must be set to channel 5 of the APM."
Hope this helps.
Yeah. I saw that.. In the wiki It shows ch8 as the switch channel I thought it was only that channel.. thx
Sorry, have been using your tips can you direct me to the gear switch calibration for the arducopter
One thing I did was set both sets of three, either gear up or gear down so that the bottom of the three position is Return to Launch. That way in a panic I can switch the three position to the bottom no matter where the gear switch is. So in reality I have 5 modes with redundant easy to find RTL.
I don't know how off the top of my head, but will take a look and see if there's a way to do this.
Hey, thanks! Your feedback is much appreciated and I'm glad these videos are helping. I plan on doing more APM 2.5 stuff in the next week or two as I get the waypoint navigation working. Let me know if there are any specifics you'd like me to cover. I really enjoy the APM 2.5 as it has much more flexibility than the Naza, but the Naza is hard to beat for straight out-of-the-box fun.
Thanks for this video Dennis. I've just bought a 9xr with the APM 2.6 and this works a treat for the 3 way switch. Just a quick question. I'm a bit of a beginner so please bear with me. Why use channel 6 on the receiver to 5 on the APM.Why not just 5 to 5. Now channel 5 is empty on my receiver, have I now lost this channel ??? Keep up the good work, Cheers.
I think it's a function of what TX mode you're flying in. HELI vs ACRO. In one case CH5 cannot be used and you have to use CH6. Now I'm not sure if the 9XR is the same, but I need to revisit and see why it works this way. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi Dennis quick question does the backlight turn off after a few seconds on turnigy 9x v2 stock hook up?
ras4q2001 Mine doesn't, but I did it get it off ebay with backlight already installed. But I do remember my original T9X with a green backlight stayed on all the time too. I'd venture to say that's default behavior.
Hi Dennis. Appreciate the video. I was reading through the comments and I noticed someone asked if this worked with the walkera x350. Have you tried this with this quad?
I have the 9x and the same receiver u r using in this video and set this to channel 6 as you did, but I cannot get the 3 way switch to work for the 3 flight modes. The x350 quad doesn't use software to tell me what % to set the pitch curve values.
Do u have any ideas? Thanks
Hey Ashley, thanks for the comment. No I sure haven't tried with the X350. I actually didn't know it existed until you mentioned it :)
I noticed your other comment about you getting this working with PIT TRIM. I'll read that comment shortly and respond with any additional thoughts. Thanks!
hello ive got this fr sky module and fr-skt d8r-ii , can i use this tutorial , to set up my turnigy?
+neo36w eno36w it's worth a shot. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
hi i just finished me quadcopter.everything works nice but i cannot get into the air, when i think i did it right PID the front two motors spin faster and me quadcopter go back and then quad flips over ??
Do you know how to make the 3 position switch to work so I can use for flaps where I can have 2 different flap angles?
Clarence Hebert That's a great question. I have no idea how to do this but when I get some time I'll take a look. Thanks for the thought.
Thank you very much. I learned a lot from this video.
Yousof Jamal No problem at all. Thanks for watching.
Hi Dennis! I'm having flaps on channels 5 & 6 (operating on the Pitch Trim dial) because Bixler 2 needs reverse on one of the servos operating flaps, so I'd like to configure APM mode switch on the channel 7 or 8. Any hints how to do it?
I heard that you're supposed to have your 9x set to ACRO mode to fly and APM, and that bad things would happen if it were set to HELI. Can you comment on this?
You can set up to 6 modes combining 3-mode switch and AIL D/R switch in mixers. The order of modes will be 1-2-3-6-5-4 but each you can tune in MissionPlanner and keep it in mind like 1-2-3-4-5-6 )
It's interesting trying to follow along when you're running APM Planner 2.0.10. In 2.0, the "green bars" are in "Initial Setup", not "Configuration". Once I found the right screen, the rest of this went smoothly.
Either from this video, or the three-mode video, I have AUX CH5 set to GEAR. Can I use channel 5 again?
When I moved the servo lead from channel 5 to channel 6 and re-started, my PC changed the port speed to 9600! It may not be a fluke, so be sure and check Device Manager/Ports and the port setting of the Arduino device before trying other things.
Thanks for sharing that info, Hugh. I've been trying to convert to APM Planner but am still using Mission Planner for a lot of the log analysis tools. Strange that your port speed changed. Not sure what's going on there. I'll see if I can mess around with APM Planner this week and see if I get similar results. Take care.
Thanks for the feedback and the offer. Let me think about this some more and get gack to you. Are you a web developer? I used to do a fair amount of web development and have built several sites on Wordpress. Thanks again.
Any idea how to do the same thing but when the 9x is in airplane mode?
Not sure what you mean as a "transmitter". The box is Turnigy 9x (exactly as yours) but FrSky transmitter module instead of the original Turnigy's that came out of the box.
Don't suppose you have done any work on making the 6 flight modes somehow available to be selected on the Turnigy? :)
What I was thinking was to have the switch next to it kind of act as a "hi-low" modifier for the 3 pos switch... But no idea how that could be achieved. :/
I'm having a hard time getting my 3 position switch to work at all? I have V2 just like your's and the last number on ID1 will not change from 100%? it move's but when I go to save it, something go's nuts and it go's back to 100%? the rest are what I set them up at 30% but where the H is it will not take? and Marry Christmas! by the way!
Hello Dennis, congratulations from São Paulo, Brazil.
Yesterday I made my fly RcTimer APM 2.5 is great, very stable, but the loiter command is causing the quadricoptero descend slowly to the ground.
Before I do any tampering, you would have an idea of what might be going on. Another piece of information, the board is inside a case and put the recommended foam over the barometer. She is protected from wind and light.
Thank you very much.
Roberto.
Roberto, have you done the compassmot routine? Not sure if that will address the descending, but it may be worth a try. Regarding the barometer is the case from 3DR or another provider? Wish I could be of more help and good luck. Also, if you get this resolved would you mind sharing your findings at www.garagepilots.com? There are a lot of us over there that could benefit. Thanks!
Hello Dennis, actually my flight controller is the RcTimer, and that worries me, may have come with some problem. Still I will do compassmot routine and see if I solve the problem.
I would like to thank you for your attention and for sure all the information I get about this problem, I will share with you all.
Thank you very much.
