- A "day in the life" of the Beatles in the recording studio. On this date (Oct. 4th 1968) the Beatles recorded Martha My Dear. These photos were taken at the session at Abbey Road and give us a little insight as to how they recorded Martha My Dear as well as who played on it. It was always thought that the only beatle that played on this song was Paul, but as you can see in the photos George harrison added guitar to this song as well. John and Ringo are absent though. Very educational for scholars ans students of music as well as students of Beatle music in particular. If you like this please subscribe so I can continue to make more videos. Thank you for watching.
A 26 year old man, self-taught on several instruments, wrote this. Astounding what The Beatles did at such young ages, in such a short period of time. Their greatness will never be matched. Ever.

I was just thinking the same thing. Just before the Beatles, you had the Beach Boys, then Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, etc. They were all great talents, but they were all typecast. They had their unique sound and people instantly knew who they were. Not so with the Beatles. From I Want to Hold Your Hand, to Help, to Eleanor Rigby, to Back in the USSR, to Helter Skelter. They reinvented themselves with each album. And none of their music was simple. It was a special time with special people from a very special generation. I am just glad to have grown up during it and to have witnessed it evolve.
Their music changed with the Rubber Soul album. Didn't care too much for early Beatles, except, Ask Me Why, If I fell, and This Boy, It Won't Be Long, And I Love Her, and Tell Me Why.

The only time I saw him play it, was in the movie Get Back. Not the entire thing, but just noodling around. It sounded exactly like the recording, so I’m sure it was the same piano. Love that song!
Possibly my favorite Beatle song and Macca composition.
Criminally underrated.
I don't think it's underrated, really. The White Album is highly regarded, many people's favorite. It also has songs like Mother Nature's Son, so it's easy to lose sight of how great Martha is.

I think Macca's entire catalogue from 67 through 82 is criminally underrated, he didn't stop writing these great songs after the Beatles disbanded, just the production quality went down because he thought he wouldn't need George Martin after they disbanded and that Linda could serve in lieu of John vocally which was a mistake on Paul's part during those first several years where as she couldn't stay in tune..
“Martha My Dear” is honestly my favorite Beatles song. There is a video here on YT with two teenage boys playing a brilliant arrangement for guitar and banjo and the smiles on their faces were just so life-affirming. The endless power of Macca ♥️
One of the best songs on the White Album
One of my favorites. It's just a long bridge begging for a verse or refrain, then resolves to a refrain that just turns out to also be a bridge to the next bit, and by the time you think you are starting to figure it out, it ends. Sting said in an interview that music must have surprises to be worth listening to, and this one is surprises from beginning to end.
It has such a warmth and sophistication with Paul’s excellent voice and brilliant instrumentation. It is melancholy and of course very nostalgic as well
The man who wrote this song is a genious, incredible piano and melody.
I used to sing this with my late brother while he played it on the piano. I just love this tune! The 70's were often fun. I'm 65 and can still hit those notes. "All we need is love"
I always loved how bouncy and fun this song is. This is by far my favorite Beatles song of all time!

White Album will always be favorite. This song is a masterpiece of arrangement, and really points to the things Wings would do melodically in the years to come. Uplifting and joyful in Sir Paul’s inimitable way.
I always just loved Abbey Road and poo poo'd White Album in comparison but getting into this song now, Me and My Monkey, in addition to the hits..it truly is great..even if there are a couple songs I can't listen to (rare for me and the beatles).
The White Album is the greatest record ever recorded. Nuff said.

One of my favorites from the White Album. It’s a simple, catchy little tune that always gets stuck in my head.

I don't agree that it's a simple little tune. The shapes and phrasings of the tune are really interesting and unexpected with syncopated rhythms and contrapuntal writing for piano. Musicologists have taken this apart. The opening bars are weird, with an extra beat changing the metre from 4/4 to 5/4 and the key moves from its apparent Eb major through F major finally to Bb mixolydian. It's a very clever piece.

Might sound strange, but I start crying as soon as I hear that piano at the beginning of the song. The reason is probably that this song always reminds me of the day back in the summer of 2017 when my dad walked into my room and told me my cat who lived with my mom had passed away. I had known her since I was born and so I can’t help but cry when I hear this. Sorry if I sound like I’m trying to get people to feel sorry for me.
A lot of Beatle songs remind me of things that have happened in my life too. Both sad and happy. It's amazing the power of music.

Always loved this song. I was 13 years old when the album came out. I remember like it was yesterday, My older brother, stopped over with the "New" Beatles album,
"The White Album".. I was like they say "On Cloud 9" and it was a double album!!!!! I just sat on my bed and listened to it from side one to side 4.
I even sat through "Revolution #9. I thought it would get better as it went on. It didnt. Back then I had no idea about Multi-track recording. Years later they would say
Only Paul's on that song, or only John. How can this be? But it was true, with Multi-Track recording, one man can be an entire band. I should know, I own a 16 track
digital recorder and play, Drums, Bass, Keyboards, Guitars, Vocals and whatever I want to add. I also learned that on "The White Album" Ringo quit for a spell! So, I later
found out that Paul plays the drums on the two beginning tracks, " _Back in the U.S.S.R_ ." & " _Dear Prudence_ " And also plays all instruments on "Wild Honey Pie"

It's obviously not about his pet dog, it's about Jane Asher. The only reference to his dog is the name. That's it. Actually listen to the lyrics.
Jane had recently left Paul when he wrote this song, and several of his friends commented on how much the breakup affected him, that he was "heartbroken". Mal Evans revealed " *When Jane Asher left, Paul and the house fell apart* ". She, understandably, refused to take him back.

Don't forget me..."_ Clearly about a woman who has left him, something that actually happened to Paul in real life at the time he wrote this song. And who had been his inspiration throughout The Beatles? It's _so_ obvious this song is about Jane Asher.

This has been many many times my favourite Beatles song.
This is one of the best songs McCartney ever wrote, it's impeccably done, the B section anticipates Disco, the guy was a freaking genius and yeah he had something over Lennon, Lennon didn't know what to do with himself as his songwriting partner had transcended him
They're just different. Lennon had some great songs on Abbey Road. They feel like they were written for the group instead of McCartney and George Martin doing whatever they needed to make McCartney's songs great. Lennon's very best songs might be on Revolver.
It's easy to forget all these superlative songs were written by Lennon-McCartney, a songwriting *duo*.
His very best were surely on Rubber Soul - Paul didn't "overtake" him until Revolver.

The thing about this song is it's so Different. Hard to even describe it. I thought, "Well that isn't the kind of thing I'm used to hearing." I remember Novermber, I think that's when the white album came out.

I heard somewhere that although Paul had a dog named Martha the song is actually about Jane Asher who had recently left him.
It was not about Martha Paul's sheepdog that has been the rumor for years but untrue.

ELO has always kinda been seen as the kind of band that the beatles would've become if they continued. This song could've easily been an ELO song also; the similarities are striking.
Jeff Lynne is a very open and enthusiastic Beatles fan. Many an author has pointed out that ELO clearly picked up where The Beatles left off and ran with it.
You know you get that feeling that Jeff Lynne was more of a Paul guy than a John guy

Hi Oliver, yes you are right. This was recorded at Trident. I said in the opening credits of the video it was Abbey Road. That is incorrect, thanks for the correction. At this time (while making the "White Album"), the Beatles were using more than one studio at the same time, especially as it started to get near the release date of the album in November. I appreciate any and all feedback as long as it is constructive and not just and attack on my videos. Hello, this wasn't recorded at Abbey Road it was recorded at Trident Studios (so was Dear Prudence and Hey Jude) the photos are from Trident also. It was recorded on a Sound Techniques Console . Just correcting your info box
Ringo wasn't absent. He played drums on the song. Check the details on the Book of the Deluxe Edition of the White Album!
Maybe just absent when these photos were taken. I have no photos of Ringo or John for this session. Most think that it was just Paul, but we can see george playing guitar in the photos.

Hmm, Dowlding's book says Lennon is on bass and Ringo is on drums. His book also says the song is about Paul's dog, contradicting "Recording Sessions" that says it's not. Ah, all those Beatle stories. Unless you were there...'nuf said.

I wonder if the piano was played by George Martin? - seems a bit technically difficult given Paul's musical background. 3 years earlier George Martin wrote & played piano solo for John's 'In My Life'.

It was Paul, Nicolas is correct. Also for the record, it was NOT about Paul's sheepdog "Martha", as it has been told many times. The inspiration ends with the name "Martha".

@@BeatlesCentricUniverse well it’s not ever discussed as a major piece comparable to rigby, yesterday, let it be etc probably because of the ‘lightness’of it’s subject but for me it’s as playful, musically inventive and joyful as any of his best. It’s also pretty much ALL McCartney. The best arrangement on the white album. Very rarely discussed in its rightful place alongside his greatest.
