How thoughtful for you to mention that. He hit first wife Cynthia only once when both were students (before they were married, btw) and regretted it. Never happened again. He never laid a finger on his second wife, Yoko. So, he never was a wife-beater. Nice try, though.

SavedByTheBellend I would agree that John Lennon was a real scumbug in his personal life (beating women & neglecting Julian). However, I would argue that him being a cunt personally doesn't detract from the wonderful music and art he made - it's important to separate the art from the artist I feel

Have you listened to his last couple of interviews. One was two days before he died, and the other was on the day he died. And he was exactly like this, and Yoko was there. All this BS about Yoko, we saw plenty of his natural personality with her around. John was just angry and bitter about the break up in the late 60’s/early 70’s, but as you can tell here, it was all out of his system and he was himself again. Nothing to do with Yoko

This interview should be an addendum to the "Get Back" documentary.
This is John as he truly was a few years after the Beatles broke up.
He's relaxed, enjoying life, making great music, he has a happy family life and has a good relationship with all of his old band mates.
"Rock and Roll", the album by John is one of my favorites because he is sharing his passion for music with his audience.
I was a young man when John was taken from this world and I am an old man now. In all of my years no truer words were ever recorded than, "All you need is love..."

A brilliant interview. John drops his guard here. Fascinating. He is such a beautiful soul. People need to be very careful when reading about John Lennon. A lot of what is written about him is not the truth. There is no way the other Beatles, George Martin and others close would have loved him so very deeply, and they did, if he were as some have attempted to portray him. Also, the incredibly beautiful music he has left us could have only come from an incredibly beautiful soul. Such music cannot come from a soul who is otherwise. It is impossible. He was as his music is. As below, so above.

boscoco - I met John in March 1980 and he was so nice to me being a starstruck 11yr old and his mother. From what I understand from others who met John over the years that he was always nice to fans signing autographs and taking photos with people. He felt somewhat responsible for his fans and owed them something if they approached him. It would have been interesting to see how that would have changed over the years and would he have turned out like Paul and Ringo who are very off putting to their fans.

I'm saying he could have kept her in the background keeping him happy & content not shove her down my throat. I get from your comment John maybe was fed up with it being all about him & The Beatles...I disagree. They wanted to be accepted as a duo but because Yoko had no talent & was unlikeable it didn't work. John maybe should have just used her as a muse & not expected his fans to listen to her awful screaming. I respect your opinion & thanks for the reply.

Yes. Hugely important figure on Radio & TV in the UK since the 70's: immersed in music since his earliest days, like Gambaccini he's one of those few who has an encyclopaedic memory of pretty much all that has happened in popular music down 50 years. All the Whistle Tests are great - some of the greatest early-career appearances of endless great performers. In later years Bob has become deeply interested in Country music, and has given many of us a better appreciation of it through some of the programmes he's made and performers he's profiled on TV & Radio.

Agreed re Bob Harris, he sat back and let John talk as a great interviewer should. And John shone because of it! Gentle soul is exactly the right description of John Lennon, he had matured so much by the age of34 and was an 'old soul'. He owned his past mistakes and learned from them.
At this point he was about to enjoy the happiest 5 years of his life at home, raising his second child, Sean. Thankfully he didn't know they would be his last years alive, and awoke every day with optimism in his adopted city, New York.
As the wise old adage goes: "It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive". God bless you John.

Thank God that Yoko wasn't there during this interview.
Every single interview that Lennon did with Yoko sitting there, hid a lot of the "real" side of himself, like he had his guard up. This interview shows the real side of him, the easygoing side, the relaxed side, the side of him where you could sit and have a cup of coffee with him and totally hit it off.

I was 14 when this was originally aired in 1975 on The Old Grey Whistle Test here in England. OGWT was the show that all music fans watched and when I knew its presenter 'whispering' Bob Harris was going to New York to interview John Lennon I was so excited. I was and still am a Beatles obsessive and it breaks my heart when he talks about coming back to England one day. Mark Chapman ensured it never happened, the bastard. Great interview, and the performance of Stand By Me that went with it was superb.

Best John Lennon interview ever!!! thanks to the intelligent questions of the interviewer who allowed John to speak without interrupting him or contradicting him, John was so relaxed he didn't have to put his guard up with this guy, coz he was respectful John and wasn't trying to grandstand him or outsmart a Beatle or trap John into saying something that could later be exploited by the tabloids. This is the real John Lennon, without Yoko, playful and sensitive, witty and smart, who loved his Beatle bros.

I’ve never seen this interview before - but I have to say that I’ve never seen John more relaxed and seemingly happy than when he was here. Clearly relations between himself and the others, Paul especially, had improved considerably from the time of the split and a reunion was clearly a possibility. His comments about England and Liverpool were very touching and that final Vera Lynn impression brought a tear to my eye - he was taken from us all far far too soon. God bless you John, wherever you are.

Yoko ALWAYS controlled John. They NEVER had an equal relationship.
She was boss, what she said went, and John toed the line! She played mind games with him, and terrorized him with threats of abandonment...John didn't do independence well, he NEEDED someone with him all the time. Look at his life pattern ( Pete Shotten, Paul, Cynthia, Stu, Paul, Brian, Paul, Yoko, May Pang, Harry Nilsson, May Pang, Yoko)
And if you think he had his act together, and was a bread baking, baby Sean diapering, happy househubby feminist, while his live in cook, nanny, maid played cards and wrote songs, you are delusional and have dranked the Ono/Lennon estate koolaid. Read more than Yoko sanctioned articles and books.Yoko controlled John with drugs, threats, hypnosis and superstition. You are either one of Yoko's paid PR or you are a clueless volunteer Yoko defender. If you're going to defend her, GET PAID FOR IT! Others do.
