It’s worth noting that Ringos delicious musings were the basis of a hard days night and eight days a week. He would say odd things like this and it created rock history. Ringo has always been the most carefree , easy going guy in every interview I've seen of him. Glad he's found sobriety and enjoying life. And sharing himself with us.
Ringo just sort-of quietly sailed through his fame. No big dramas, nothing scandalous. Now you look back and realize he was the oldest and most sickly (when young) and the last member to get on board the Beatles, yet made it all this way and stills looks amazingly well too!!
Ringo is smart enough to keep quiet about things he has no control over ...John and George both were physically attacked the night before the day they planned to talk too much...
My parents met here in Liverpool in 1961 and a large portion of there dates back then we're spent at the Cavern dancing and singing away to the local bands. My Dad always said we must have seen the Beatles a hundred times when I ask my Mum she says it was easily 50-60 maybe not a hundred but it was a lot. My Dad was a musician and had many friends who played in other Liverpool bands also performing on the same shows so it was no big deal back then it was just watching the local talent at the hippest place around for a pair of music loving teenagers.
As a young child, I saw them play on the Ed Sullivan Show when they came to the states. It took me a micro second to notice Ringo, and he's been my favorite Beatle ever since. He just looked like he was having such fun on those drums.
Ringo and Paul were likely the closest band mates instrumentally because bass and drums have to form a tight bond to be successful. This is possibly one of the most overlooked aspects of the Beatles. Sure their harmonies were terrific and everyone likes to point that out. But listen closely to how in sync the drums and bass are in any one of their songs. And Ringo was an absolute artist on the drum, so much so that it meshed perfectly with the theme of the song and go somewhat unnoticed when compared with the vocals and guitar.
@@jamesstewart8377 the point I am making is that the bass and drummer have to be in sync no matter the band- they form the foundation of the band and as a player myself I can attest to the universal truth. Rhythm and bass are important but not as much. Now you know.
They have been in my life for 58 years since Ed Sullivan. The pain I felt with John's passing will be duplicated when one of them dies-a reminder of my own mortality.
I too love Ringo. I went to his All Starr Band concert several years ago. After playing several hours he ended the show singing the song while doing jumping jacks the whole time! Incredible!
First of all, he is a worldwide treasure. In an age where people are being nasty left and right, this guy is positivity personified. Second, the guy is 80 years old for crying out loud. I hope I'm one tenth as alive when I'm that age. Third, you know he's told those stories for 50 years (e.g., how "Octopus's Garden" was inspired -- "Pete's boat" indeed) but the stories are as fresh as if he just remembered them for the first time in years. BTW, I love that Jimmy is in awe but is a great kidder. It's like they were great friends there. They aren't friends in the normal sense. We all feel like we know Ringo (millions upon millions of us) and he his generous enough to feel like he knows you too. I'm a huge, huge fan of him as a human being and as an artist.
"Octopus' Garden" is a MAGNIFICENT song. Very underrated, and I love it so much! I actually start learning English playing Beatles songs like this one. Ringo is right, is super easy to play on the guitar, only a couple of notes. My children love the song too. I got emotional watching him talking about this one.
No it's not and neither is 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer'. Anything in the White Album however... It's just such an earth-shattering masterpiece through and through.
It's quite nice. I think he was selling the song short here just because of his humility, but there's more to it than just an octopus's garden under a sea. To me the song evokes the feeling of safety in your own little bubble with your buddies. That line "we would be warm below the storm" is really something. George Harrison said something about this in an interview too, he thought the song was quite nice for that reason, a possible further reading
Awesome! My cousin, while he was learning English used to watch Happy Days and told me that he loved listening to the Fonz cause he annunciated every word.
Since Ringo couldn't even play guitar and only knew about three notes I would completely disagree, especially if you listen to the guitar progressions on Octopus's Garden. It was fairly complicated.
For me the gig on the roof was a revelation because it’s the only time i’ve seen them play live without any crowd interference and also the addition of the keyboards gave it a really full and warm sound.✌️❤️
No, his set up and play was just basic. If you think he was great, check out Nick Mc Brain's (Iron Maiden) or Annika Nilles's, Nico Kaukussan's (Amon Smart), Lars Ulrich's (Metallica) ... set up and play... than you see what talented really stands for.
@@Thomas83KO Ringo Starr was left handed and played a right handed kit. This allowed for some of the most unique fills of the 60s and 70s. He was an unconventional drummer that combined aspects of jazz drumming (usage of swings) with rocker drumming. He was able to keep up a tempo with the other three by watching their footwork during their live shows because he couldn’t hear them over all the screaming girls. Listen to his drum work on songs like Come Together, Rain, and Ticket To Ride. He wasn’t flashy, he didn’t like drum solos. He didn’t need any of those to be one of the most unique drummers of the rock genre. Ringo was the beat in the Beatles.

"Which Beatle was the most gaseous?" "Paul. I have to say that because the other two aren't with us anymore." "Cool" and "grace" don't often end up in the same sentence together but, really, Ringo embodies both.
Great interview and very happy to see how vibrant Ringo remains at the age of 82. What a life he has led and he is still a good person with a big heart.
Crazy that for some people it took a documentary and 50 years to realize what a genius Paul is bc they kept believing what people who were really competitive with him said to downplay his talent. The rooftop gig is worth popping the kettle on for and just sitting with a biscuit and enjoying a super tight band playing and making great music together. My favourite Beatles performance as I can hear them and the balance of sound they create is wonderful.
The Beatles were the best band ever. Every band you see after were influenced by them. They had the best sense of humor and were great influencers. People listened to them
Of course excepting the times around the breakup when it was Paul against the other three in court battling over management and money. Ringo once drove out to Paul's home to give him some papers regarding those court battles and Paul slammed the door in his face. There was quite a time when they were not on good terms. Ringo also had a very serious alcohol and cocaine problem in the 70's and 80's and was often rude and obnoxious in public settings. Hard to believe, as he is so deservedly beloved these days and just the nicest person. And remarkable that he is so well preserved after childhood illness and abusing his body so badly for such a lengthy period.

@@DanVassiliou It's not 100% known for sure, but it is likely that Ringo came back and overdubbed the fills for Prudence. And he is good at that sort of thing - think of Come Together or the last verse of Let It Be.
John was the one, if I recall correctly, who first recognized Ringo's own original drumming. Ringo had his own unique beat & tympani combo which, obviously, worked out quite well!
I really wish Paul and Ringo would link up and make some new music. Paul has the songwriting chops (obviously), and Ringo knows _exactly_ how to compliment his writing with his drumming. Bring in a second songwriter to push and pull, and good god, we could show future generations what an "album" is in real time! Dave Grohl? I know you're up for it. Thom Yorke? Yesssss!!! Thom Yorke would rub agaisnt Paul's straightforward style quite well, in the way John did (ish). Good GOD! PLEEEAAAAASE!
I thought that would happen when Paul collaborated with Elvis Costello. "Oh good, here's an acerbic guy to balance Paul's mushy tendencies". Didn't happen that way. But then EC later collaborated with Burt Bacharach, so he was mushier than I thought.
Paul asked Thom to play on his song Mr Bellamy, but Thom said he didn't have enough conviction in his piano skill to accept. haha I would still love to see them work together.

I really thought it turned out great. Can you imagine if these two did that? It would draw more people than the greatest most popular Broadway show would. I really hope they do something like that while they're still with us. Not to mention I hope they both have many, many years left.

It’s worth noting that Ringos delicious musings were the basis of a hard days night and eight days a week. He would say odd things like this and it created rock history.
Exactly. If you DON'T hear the drummer, he's perfect.
Paul and John by far.
@@jamesstewart8377 the point I am making is that the bass and drummer have to be in sync no matter the band- they form the foundation of the band and as a player myself I can attest to the universal truth. Rhythm and bass are important but not as much. Now you know.
Paul and Ringo can never pass, they each are wonderful people. We hope that day is long away.
