Everybody should experience the friendship that existed between Doc and Wyatt at least once in their life.
Too bad there isn't very many honest people like that lol.
They infact hated eachother and fell out over a woman. No one knows how Jonny died, wyatt never visited him in any hospital upon his death.
I've been a Doc a small handfull of times in my life, & also friends have bailed me out. One time however I did look like the Devil Himself, riding the shotgun strollin down to guys like Ike n friends.
@@potterj09 what?
only in movies...
"Why Johnny Ringo. You look like somebody just walked over your grave!"
The delivery of that line... just superb!
Johnny Ringo - I was just fooling about
Doc Holiday - I wasn't
Johnny Ringo - I'm fucked.!!
"I wasn't" ... the change of tone in his voice when delivering that line was perfect
Val explained Doc looking down at his bare feet and saying "Isn't this funny?" was how Doc fully expected to die in a gunfight with his boots on and yet here he is dying in a sanitorium in the ultimate final irony. The friendship between the real Doc and Wyatt was every bit this depthful and real.
“You’re gonna die with your boots on” used to be a phrase that essentially meant “live by the sword, die by the sword.”
He’d been told that his whole life whenever he did anything extra… Doc Hollidayish.
Before he died, he noticed his toes and got one last HEH out at their expense.
I was looking through the comment section to find this exact explanation... Thank you
From what I understand Doc died with a laugh (recorded history). But it's not clear why he laughed. So the movie gave one interpretation
This movie has a few truths to it, but it's definitely fiction
And he never killed Johhny. He wasn't even in the same state. A post office worker found him. He had mental issues and shot himself
The portrayal of Tuberculosis is just scary. Absolutely on point.
I was diagnosed with TB 15 years ago got it from uncle smh... just to think it was a death sentence 100 years ago is scary...
@@franksaint84 I had a positive PPD(I think thats what its called?) back in the military. Had to take INH (drug for TB now) for months before I was done. And even now I cant get a PPD done again. And yeah, its scary a/f thinking that if we were born 100 years ago we would be dead at 20-30 from TB.

How Val Kilmer wasn’t nominated for an Oscar is beyond me. A real travesty.
Damned straight
He probably didn't participate in the Hollywood satanic club..
I completely agree. Best role he ever played!
Val Kilmer should be nominated for best supporting actor in this movie
@@allanantoniodelapena4015 Totally agree. This was the 66th Academy Awards, and imo the Best Actor category was simply full of better performances for him to get a spot there, but he surely deserved a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category that year.
"There's no normal life Wyatt, there's just life".....truer words never spoken!
Yep 👍
In this case, it is really true.
Val Kilmer’s death bed seen is one of the best I’ve ever seen. The speech, the look the mannerisms was superb. He was cheated out of his Oscar.
Val took an ice bath just prior to the death scene to give it more of a realistic look.
@@kimoneill7505 that is a wild detail
who won it?
@@toddamusroberts1397 Tom Hanks in Philadelphia.
Val getting cheated was like Paul Newman getting cheated out of his Oscar in the 60s. They gave it to him in 1986 as an apology and he never bothered to show up to receive it.
I love the look on Earp's- Kurt Russell's face when he realizes that Doc- Kilmer has taken out his greatest rival in his dying state.
This movie is a very special Western.
Doc pretending he will come with him, then faking being super ill and that he can't. Only to go himself and take out the man that Wyatt knew would kill him is one of the best moments on film. Wyatt is thinking that this fucking guy is close to death and still beat this guy who easily had the beating of me.
@@jamiestewart48right, wyatt was still a badass for showing, esp after doc told him the harsh truth that he will die
@@marked4death076 Facts. The true definition of a man.
For those of you wondering why Doc Holiday says "I'm your huckleberry", the best explanation I've read so far is huckleberry is southern slang for "right person for the right job". So what Doc is telling Ringo is "I'm the right person to deal with you.".
iam your huckle berry. iam your pall bearer
@@reggreenslade5769 "Some folks think that Holliday may have said something else in real life. He might’ve said, “I’m your huckle bearer.” In the South, a huckle was a casket handle. A huckle bearer would be the person carrying a coffin, essentially a pallbearer.
According to this theory, what Holliday should have said in the film is, “I’m your huckle bearer.” The theory goes that Val Kilmer accidentally said huckleberry instead, and the line stuck. There are a couple of problems with that explanation, though. First, no official copy of the script has ever been seen with the words “huckle bearer” used. Second, Val Kilmer maintains that the line written in the script was huckleberry, and Kilmer even titled his autobiography I’m Your Huckleberry.
So what’s the truth about Holliday’s famous catch-phrase? Another Southern slang usage of huckleberry was “the right person for the job.” In both instances of Holliday using the phrase in the film, Johnny Ringo is hoping to spark violence. What Holliday is saying to Johnny Ringo is that if he’s looking for trouble, Holliday’s the guy to give it to him."
He said huckleberry. And he meant it.
@@jaydee3730 nice! Thanks for the info.
@@jaydee3730 no sir you are totally incorrect I know for a fact that Doc Holliday used to say Gs up hoes down at the OK corral and he was also known to smack a bitch up whilst sipping on Gin and juice
@@jaydee3730do you know the reason everyone calls Doc “Lunger”?
This is by far the greatest western ever made. It’s perfect. Perfectly paced, perfectly cast, perfectly acted, perfectly shot, perfectly directed.
100% agree
Young Guns is up there, imo. Good fight.
Absolutely, the dialogue is excellent. The attention to detail as well. The clothing, guns, leather all period correct.
I didn't like how the star, had a gay friend who was special in some spiritual way just because he was gay. Wyatt left his wife for a star, who was actually kind of a big whore. Val Kilmer and his role was the biggest reason this movie is so spectacular. The fashion is beautiful too. I just think Wyatt should've helped his wife at that point in time, with her addiction, as there were so few options for women to make money.
I Have to disagree. Lonesome dove 🕊 is the best.
"I was just foolin'“
"I wasn't 😏"
"Say When"
Oooof
"I was just foolin' about."
"I wasn't."
The end where Earp is with Doc and Doc says if you have any love for me leave. And a tear rolls down Docs face. Earp puts the little paper book he wrote about Doc. My god every time I watch it I ball my eyes out. True friendship.
WRONG!! If you ever have any little feeling for me,leave. That is what he said. So get it right!!!
@@mytube-vm3ft
"Wyatt, if you were ever my friend - if ya ever had even the slightest of feelin' for me, leave now."
Both of you, get it right 😂😂
that aint friendship, thats brotherhood. Doc is and will always be an Earp, if not by name, than by bond.
Michael Biehn is a seriously underrated actor. From Terminator to Aliens to Tombstone. He was always 💯
Don't forget 'The Abyss'....he was totally badass brilliant as the (Navy Seal) villain!!
Personally I love him.
Wish he was in more stuff.
Agreed. He deserves more recognition.
He's a incredible actor.
"If you ever had even the slightest feeling for me, leave now. Please." My heart breaks every time, I swear 😭😭😭😭😭
Val Kilmer deserved an Oscar for this performance. Disgraceful he didn’t get even get nominated!!
Everyone talks about Val, and rightfully so, but Michael Biehn plays Ringo perfect as well. He has so much expression in his eyes. Crazy in them eyes, but steady, calm.
And fear when he realized it was Doc instead of Wyatt and he knew, deep down, he was not as fast as Doc Holliday and was about to die. Great facial scene by Michael Biehn, you can see the astonishment and fear in that look on his face. Remarkable performance.
Absolutely.. His eyes change as he readies for d fight.. It is great acting
The scene in sanitorium was greatness. Wyatt not wanting to let go of his friend and Doc giving him permission, nay encouraging him to go live his life. It's incredible.
Incredible my friend
You can almost see Johnny’s heart exit his body when Doc says “I’m your huckleberry”.
Perfect Performances.
One of the best movie ever! My heart went out to Wyatt as he was leaving, he knew he’d never see his friend again in this lifetime. It does something to you. That knowledge. Val Kilmer was the best he’s ever been in that role. He should have won an Oscar for his performance!! He was definitely robbed of his Oscar!
"There is no normal life, Just life Wyatt, get on with it." Lot's of therapy could have been avoided if I just remembered that line.
When Doc is laying in bed talking about the empty hole in Ringo's heart and revenge for being born, he's also talking about himself.
That’s why he hates him as well. In the bar scene. The more he learned about ringo the more he hated him, because they were one in the same, but dingo wasn’t sick physically, he was sick mentally.
Incredible writing and illusory work.
@@Vaga-Bard Absolutely you missed the point
When Doc says please and Wyatt says thanks for always being there Doc and just walks away. That shit hits hard every single time. Wow what a scene, wow what a movie!
Bro that final speech alone should've won him the best supporting actor that year. The biggest robbery in film history!
The whole cast was great. But Val Kimmer was outstanding. Jonny Ringo really was great too . His role really helped Doc's role add so much to the movie.
Best performance to never get an Oscar. Val Kilmer made his character so believable and he showed what a skilled actor he really is.
“The last charge of Wyatt Earp and his Immortals” is an under appreciated line.
The drop in Biehn's face when he says the word "it" in the line, "Let's do it" is perfect.
He acts tough and excited until that word and has to put on a face again for the duel. You can tell in this moment that he was genuinely scared.
“I’ll be damned. This is funny”
Great nod to the real life Doc.
My favorite part is when Doc twirls his gun and holsters it very quickly after out dueling Ringo. Demonstrating he also has gun tricks, but that they don’t matter unless you win the fight.
Tombstone is and always will be my favorite movie. In my eyes it was perfect in every way. Val Kilmer should have won an Oscar for his portrayal of Doc Holiday. His southern accent was great!!
I've never been a great fan of westerns as a genre but this particular film is an exception, purely for Kilmer's performance.
Kilmer was one of the best character actors around when he played a part he was that character ..
Where was "I got two guns. One for each of ya" ? ... THAT's my favorite line
Val Kilmer was a hell of an actor in this movie. He was good in top gun but this is his best performance. Kurt Russell is a damn good actor in this movie as well. Hell the whole movie has great actors up and down it. One of my favorites for sure.
Pretty good in HEAT
He's the best!
You got ice man and his crew.. there gay
It really doesn’t get any better than this. The finest of acting performance by the entire cast. 4:29
To me, Val Kilmer stole the show in this movie.
The two most terrifying words you can hear from Doc Holiday:
"Say when"!
😂
Wyatt : "I can't beat him, can I?"
Doc : "No."
Wyatt: "Gosh, Doc. You're really great at building a guy's confidence."
Doc: Well... Just being honest, Earp. Don't wanna go to hell being a liya to ya. *cough cough*
I know you are joking lol but I always loved that scene because you could see he had accepted his fate. He knew he was walking into a hopeless fight, and he still chose to go. That takes a kind of grit that is quite rare.
Wyatt: well sometimes maybe a white lie would do a feller good in his time of need.
Doc: oh poor you, let me play the violin for you.
In my opinion, Val Kilmer's best role. Even when he has no lines he's acting his heart out, every movement, every expression.
The ending where Doc dresses as wyatt, and johhny ringo tries to kill him, until he realizes its not wyatt, but doc is hands down the best scene of this film. His face is 100% terror when he realizes hes already dead, its just a matter of when, as there was no way other than cowardice to back out.
Facts bro
His best line of the entire movie however, "Live for me Wyatt, Live for me."
That's a good'un, but, for ME, "Why, Johnny RINGO, you looked like somebody just WALKED over your grave" is tops.
I agree. Two close friends parting company. One passing, the other moving on. Stella performances from both men.
“I was just foolin’ about..”
“I wasn’t.”
So savage and deadly hearing that line. You knew who was going to lose as soon as that was said. Such an incredible job by Michael Biehn and Val Kilmer!
Loved how Ringo was scared as shit he was docs kill no matter how hard he tried your no Daisy no Daisy at all
I love how he says it
Absolutely, 100%, Val Kilmer was robbed of an Oscar for his Doc Holiday role.
Michael Biehn is great in this. You can tell from his face that he had no problem dueling Earp, but when Doc shows up it's a whole other game, one that scares him.
Johnny Ringo fills his pants when he hears 'I'm your huckleberry.'
He knows he's fucked. I love this movie.
"There's no normal life, there's just life now get on with it" holy crap the writing was great.
Brilliant from Val yet I always loved the shift in Michael Biehn's expression when he goes from scared to "Ok then pal, let's do it!".
"Alright lunger, let's do it!".
I think he realized just how sick Doc was, so he thought he had an actual chance.
@@DaveCM I think he just realized there was no other way around it... so he was like "maaaybe I can do it" he's convincing himself that he can. Even though there's no way, he's got no chance at all if he doesn't think he can win.
@@davidpeters6743 very valid
Michael Biehn was asked about meeting Val Kilmer during filming of Tombstone. He said he never met Val because Val Kilmer stayed in Doc character at all times
Val Kilmer played the party perfectly. And the director knew that Doc already knew his moves. He showed his hand in the bar to Holiday as Holiday mimicked it. He knew how he would draw. When he swerked and said, "Say When" he knew his style and knew he had already beaten him.
That is something I didn't think about.
It was Doc’s accuracy too, not just how fast he can draw his pistol. He went straight to the temple, as even a chest shot with Ringo drawing that fast would result in him getting shot as well most likely. He had to take him out with the most debilitating shot, and shot from the hip where Ringo went higher (what he learned about his draw before) with his gun. Doc Holliday at least Val Kilmer’s portrayal did not play!
@4:34 is one of my favorite moments in movie history.. just the way, Kilmer acts like "I don't know what happened" when he says "I'm afraid the strain the was more than he could bare" for some reason, his demeanor in that scene cracks me up every time... almost like he was saying "I don't know what happened, He was like this when I got here" lol
Have to say this has to be one of the best films of the 1900’s. All the actors did a superb job and great storyline. Hollyweird couldn’t dream of any movie this good now! All these actors are known for this movie out of all of the ones they ever did!
Doc was describing himself in his analytical description of ringo.
Definitely got the vibe he was making that analysis partially about himself.
He does say he reminds him of him.
"Why Johnny RIngo, you look like someone stepped all over your grave"
Such a great line. :)
Oscar-worthy performance by Kilmer!!! Robbed BIG time...!!!
VAL KILMER should be awarded the academy award for the best actor in a western his performance was superb without question one of the best ever even now.
Val Kilmer in his prime...absolutely unbelievable ❤
Phenomenal
Usually only close brothers have this level of final understanding. Few know the 'brotherly' type of friendship here portrayed. I have it with my little brother who is 68 years old, but with few others.
All of the acting was high level in this film, but Kilmer brought it to a higher level.
I couldn’t see anyone but Val playing Doc Holiday, he owned this role 👏🏼❤
Doc knew his time was coming… he had to save his homeboy before he passed 💯
So many great actors, yet Val Kimer managed to steal this film.
It’s cool that Doc went to face Ringo, basically, he knew Wyatt wouldn’t win. And even Ringo tried to dodge it.
The superbly done closing scene with Doc and Wyatt gets me every time.
Doc's gunfighting stance, shelding himself like a boxer, all the while holding and casually smoking a cigarette!!!! Classic👍
Val Kilmer hit it out of the park! 😭
Thanks Kurt for directing this Masterpiece and for getting these Cast. If the Director would be Clint Eastwood, this Movie would get a lot of Oscars, an the one for Val would be a piece of cake.
"You're no daisy. You're no daisy at all!"
No, but he'll be pushing daisies from now on.
Val Kilmer's acting in this movie is likely the best ever anywhere.
What's interesting about the gunfight with Johnny Ringo, is how Doc left himself open, almost begging Ringo to do the kill shot & end Doc's suffering from tuberculosis.
I really liked Kilmer in top gun and heat. But tombstone was his absolute best role. In my opinion, of course. 😁
In your opinion and that of a lot of other people. He was phenomenal in this movie. He never topped himself after this.
One of the greatest performances by an actor ever. Had to go thru his part flawlessly while soaked to bone simulating sweat. Then delivered the delivered the best line since Frankly my dear I don't give a damn in Gone with the wind. I'm your huckleberry. In Tombstone. Outstanding performance by Val Kilmer. AWESOME!!!!!.
He was just fantastic in this. He should won so many awards
"Poor soul, you were just too high strung." best line lol
How an Oscar was denied VK is just one of many the Academy has F**d up over the years.
Just watched this moves first time and i have to say that Val Kilmer was best actor overall in this movie. 🤘
Same here I truly love this movie now that I’ve finally seen it
I guess Doc thought he would die with his boots on, not bare footed. Great acting Val Kilmer.👍👍
Never knew what he meant until you comment, thanks!
@@williamwood5008 You're welcome.👍👍
You can see how badly he wanted to die on his feet bested by a truly better rival but he never came across that man
Have you ever seen such great acting? I wish I could read the screenplay to understand Doc's words to Wyatt at the end. Such great scenes. So great. And sad. Wow.
Those dying moments...."i'll be damned, this is funny." it may not give clarity but damn sure gives solace.
Because of how wild Doc chose to live, he expected to die with his boots on.
Poor Soul!! He was just too high strung!!
LOL!!
They should have made a prequal spinoff with him as doc and the main character, woulda watched the hell outta that.
Same
Still can't believe Val never got an Oscar for being Doc.
WYATT:
"Alright. Let's finish it."
DOC:
"Indeed sir. The LAST charge of Wyatt Earp and his immortals."
👉 Definition of FRIEND. 👍
My all time favourite film and that end scene always gets me 😭
I do not see how Kilmer did not get an Oscar.
One of the greatest Movies ever made!
it raised the bar for forthcoming Western Movies with the acting, cinematography & dialogue with a flawless cast...should've bagged a ton of Oscars...IMO
Val Kilmer was the highlight of the movie and it’s hard to say with Kurt Russel as the lead. They truly were a magic duo. Haven’t seen anything like it since.
Val Kilmer should have won the Oscar for his Doc Holliday role! And he says “I’m your huckle bearer” since huckle was an old term for the handle on a casket, which makes more sense than saying “I’m your huckleberry” 👌🏼
From Urban Dictionary: Huckle bearer is a nonexistent word that is claimed to have been used in the South to mean the same as 'pallbearer' during the 1800s. This is based on the claim that the term huckle referred to a coffin handle. This term was made up out of whole cloth by a 'historian' engaged in blatant speculation after the release of the movie Tombstone, where Doc Holliday, played by Val Kilmer, utters the famous line "I'm your huckleberry." The claim is that the real Doc Holliday said 'I'm your hucklebearer." Some also claim that this is the correct line from the movie. It is all complete nonsense. There is no evidence that this term ever existed.
"I'm your huckleberry" is a well-attested English idiom that was used during the 1800s and is still used in some parts of the South today. It probably does not come from Mark Twain's character Huckleberry Finn since it seems to have existed before the novel was published. It means "I'm your man" or "I'm the man for the job."
@@robh913 Spot-on correct. "Huckle bearer" is made up nonsense. Can't be found in a single piece of literature or anywhere else prior to appearing on the internet. Makes zero sense, anyway.
"Thanks for always being there Doc"....
These scenes, let alone the whole movie was so well done. Val Kilmer absolutely nailed this role and so did the rest of the gang really. Was extremely excited when a company I buy from made a dedication to his role. Skeleton depiction of Doc holding his cigarette with "I'm Your Huckleberry" underneath. Bought two due to loving this movie and his role so much. BYE running mouth Johnny Ringo...lightly putting it. Very.
How he didn't take home an Oscar is beyond me for his performance.
Master of his craft! Amazing performance Val!
Tombstone is one of my favorite Westerns. Filled with a stunning cast, it’s at least one of my top 10, number one being Wild Bunch. You can hear the dialog which is rare in recent movies filled with too much noise, jump shots, loud music. Todays’ movies can’t compare to the classics. Thanks for sharing these with us.
Despite being a very accomplished dentist and card player, Doc Holliday died of Tuberculosis at 36 completely destitute. He contracted the bacterial infection from his mother and carried it for 10 years, succumbing to the infection after years of heavy drinking and late nights weakening his body.
It was his plan to die in a gun fight, he had set his mind to do what he wanted to when he wanted to. His friendship with Wyatt was a fluke in Docs plan. But, he knew Wyatt would never let him down. Wyatt also knew Doc would never let him down that way the only people each of them really every fully trusted. And they were right Doc wanted Wyatt to live the life he had planned for himself. That's the reason he told Wyatt to live for me.
Absolutely one of the best movies ever
It took me many times watching this movie to understand his line, “This is funny.”
He didn’t die with his boots on.
The way Doc just steps out of the shadows to face Ringo was like death staring down on Ringo, powerful
Gotta give the actor that player ringo credit, the fear but then excitement in his face when he decides to fight doc is crazy acting.
They don't make them like this anymore ❤ I miss movies like these 😢
The best scene is when wyatt wonders why he's there. Doc says because "Wyatt Earp is my friend".
Wyatt says "shit i got plenty of friends."
Doc says "I don't."
That scene hits.
Died with his boots off. Didn’t see that one coming.
This easily goes down as a top 5 Western of all times! Nobody will ever play this lead character better then Val Kilmer.
The finger tapping. Shows impatience, where the other guy is trying to slowly reach for his gun, trying to eak out any advantage. Superb.
When Ringo is facing Doc Holliday, it seems he experiences fear for the first time knowing he's facing someone he may not be able to beat in a gunfight.
Val Kilmer had a Oscar worthy performance…
But the academy is out of touch with mainstream America
If your latter statement were true, Tom Hanks and Jack Nicholson would have no Oscars. The entire cast of Tombstone suffered from its excellence. The academy couldn't nominate them all, so they didn't nominate any of them-all the more reason why the Oscars should add an ensemble award, a la the SAG Awards.
@@mc76 I disagree. Val Kilmer stole the show in this movie. Besides, that isn't how Oscar's work
Hollywood is out of touch with reality.
The old filmakers made art. The new ones, propaganda.
