Hey! Say something we ALL don't know! Lol. There's maybe 2 or 3 parts that an actor was not only born for but just literally knocks it out of the atmosphere. Val as Holiday, Heath Ledger as the Joker of course, & Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa in Inglorious Bastards. Sure, there may be a few others but these 3 come to mind.
Ok, I HAVE TO ADD: Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister.

Agreed, of all the movies that and all the people that win those awards it's never the ones I have on the shelf and most certainly isn't the ones I watch over and over with the exception of the excellent work of Clint Eastwood. Top Westerns of all times: Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, Tombstone, The Unforgiven, Dances With Wolves and I do like the Costner version of Wyatt Earp. To be fair about it, I like long versions to tell the whole story and I've read as many books about the life of Wyatt Earp as I could find. I'm 5'6" 140lbs, I was a bouncer and I used what I call Wyatt Earp'ism and it worked extremely well. Given the physical frailty and mental dexterity of Doc Holiday, of course he was one of my all time favourites too. There are other great westerns, I thoroughly enjoyed the new Magnificent Seven, for example, but I think those I listed above aren't just some of the Greatest Westerns, they are some of the Greatest Movies ever made, at least, by my account and being 51 years old, I was only 21 when Tombstone was made. Val Kilmer will always be Doc Holiday to me and thus, what a job he did as a great actor.

@@arthurneddysmith I’ll brush off your insult because you are obviously an idiot to have made it. But just to be clear, whether you are a student of Shakespeare, Stanislavsky or Strasberg the ultimate test of good acting is verisimilitude. Kilmer studied the dialect of Holiday as well as his character thoroughly and delivered as believable of a portrayal as any I’ve ever seen. He deserved recognition for it. As for the Oscars, it is all about politics and money. Many great performances get snubbed every year. Personally I can’t stand to watch it. My wife was a graduate of UCLA film school. Her classmates included Tim Robbins(an Oscar winner whom she dated at the time) and other working actors and producers. We discuss every movie we watch. But in the end it is a subjective matter.

It's remarkable to me how Westerns were pronounced dead, that Hollywood forgot how to do em when by far most of the best westerns were made in the later decades....if you ask me anyway....Not that I can't still be entertained watching spagheti westerns and Clint westerns in general and such but the really old "classics" mostly have become hard to watch they are so corn dog goody two shoes. But man really entertaining well done westerns have just kept coming better than ever IMHO

One thing that never gets mentioned about Val Kilmer is the good things he does. A special education class took a field trip to the set. He was the first one to interact with them. Kurt Russell after him then rest started after that. None of that was reported to the media.

@@fredmichaels418anyone who’s a fan of this movie knows very well that this was put together with Kurt steering the ship and Comsatos was director in name only. He and Val were setting shots the night before and sending out the call sheets, running lines then shooting.
I’m so sad that Powers is gone (and even the campy over-actor in Paxton) and we will be bidding adieu to many of these fine actors parting this earth soon, and it will be a very sad time. But what’s wonderful is, many of them gave the performance of their lives in this film. Many have said Kilmer was robbed from an Oscar, but dang if anyone was, it really was Fiennes that year, but I will say Val should have been nominated. But I think what ‘robbed’ him was his reputation- he was impossible to work with, had a sense of entitlement about him. The Ghost and the Darkness is a good example of the kind of person he was then, and since his disability I think he’s become a better person. I think Val robbed Val of a nomination.

It was so easy to believe he was a cowboy from his looks, to his voice, to the way he moved, it was basically perfect. I like too how he (playing as Virgil) gives that speech about justice and making money off suffering of the people (whether it was genuine or not) was brilliant because of how little that character did and said up to then. Amazing actor and pretty great acting all around. I really can't say I'm a Bill Paxton fan because he just comes off as too goofy, though this role worked in his favor as a sort of a naive and simple guy. Anyway, I'm rambling. Great movie.

I’ve read the real life Doc Holliday learned of his illness fairly early in his life. It was written both his mother and step brother died of Tuberculosis and was from whom he contracted it. So after watching his mother suffer and die and knowing the same awaited him it gave him much less fear of death. It definitely affected him.

None has ever stuck in my thoughts before or since. Great job to everyone involved with the making of this film and thank you all so much for all the extended efforts which you all made. good movie yes but it is not historicly correct.as i have a rare copy of wyatts autography he wrotebecause he knew it would never been historicly correctl unless he wrote it himself..wyatt wrote and had a small amount of his biography printed up as the movie indstry was beggining and he was theiir and tried toget them interrested in his life story and could use his biography as a script.also needed money as he had most of it sunk in his biography.but he couldnt get anybody interested in it.so he sold a few and finally threw the rest away.as i have one of the books of his biography and later i saw the movie wyatt earp and it was excatly as wyatts biography everyway.tombstone is nowhere historicly competely correct.as i am from nasville teennessee and in the music bussinnesd .later i got booked in tombstone.also wound up writing song about tombstone and the history of them as the chamber of commerce was raising money to repair them or the state would take them up and throw them away so i partned with chamber wrote song about the history of the boardwalks and chamber partnerd with us and recorded song about history of boardwalks and shot music video on it and sold song on cassette tapes inside chamber of commerce and showed music vidio inside sold and signed music cassettes of song.sold three to kevin coster and autugraphed for him and sons.loved tombstone.also did our show at big nose kates sallon.really liked tombstone.thanks bobby mahan
