Interestingly, the story I've heard is that the movie "Wyatt Earp" with Kevin Cosner was so bad that the Tombstone folks didn't submit their film to the oscar board. That's just what I heard, but he was robbed completely for this oscar.
66th Oscar nominees: Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive), Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List), John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire), Leonardo DiCaprio (What's Eating Gilbert Grape), Pete Postlethwaite (In the Name of the Father). Snubs: Val Kilmer (Tombstone); Ben Kingsley (Schindler's List); Sean Penn (Carlito's Way); Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, & Dennis Hopper (True Romance). Only five noms allowed, hence which one do you replace?
@@chrismalik1579 drexl spivey is one of gary oldman's most memorable roles. the competition was fierce, but very few would've complained if he was nominated. it was a very inventive performance.
Val Kilmer stole the show even though this cast is epic. One of the greatest castings ever. Man, I miss movies like this. Every actor in it was a stud. rest in peace Bill Paxton.
@@Hurtman2000 I have not. I want to watch it but, damn! it looks brutal. I will watch it, if only to see Kurt Russell cowboy up. I loved The Hateful Eight. You can't go wrong with Tarantino or Clint. (I could go on all day) I love westerns.
I give that "I wasn't" the #2 spot. For me, nothing will ever top Max Rockatansky at the end of Mad Max telling Johnny the Boy _"The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It'd take you 10 minutes to cut through it. If you're lucky, you can hack through your ankle in 5."_ That's not cold- that's absolute effing zero there.
That's the thing. I don't know why, but Doc always sounded oddly innocent or childlike in that moment. Like he was saying "You said you wanted to do this, didn't you mean it?"
@@aperfecttool462Lt Coffee from the Abyss was classic. Now that I think of it, he's played a Navy Seal at least three times, the Abyss, the Rock, and Navy Seals
@@joelmbaumgartneragree Hackman winning isn’t a tragedy, he’s was excellent as the villain. But also agree Val not at least getting a nomination is a slight up there with Robert Shaw not even getting a nod for his role in Jaws.
What no one talks about is why Doc was there. Doc loved Wyatt more than anyone in the world. He knew that Wyatt couldn’t beat Ringo and he could. So he exaggerated how sick he actually was so he could take Wyatt’s place and conned Wyatt out of the badge so it would be legal.
I think what caught my eyes the most is how expressive Johnny is in the eyes, but for Doc only his mouth moves. That's some stone cold shit right there.
That’s why Johnny called out Wyatt instead of Doc. He knew he could beat Wyatt but he knew Doc would kill him. Doc loved Wyatt and he would do anything to protect him. Doc was that friend that you need when your back is against the wall.
Agreed. There is also the fact that Ringo's confidence comes from his ability to intimidate people. Doc is dying of tuberculosis, and would rather go out in a fight anyway, so there is nothing Ringo can do that scares him, even if Ringo wins. By his not being able to intimidate Doc, Ringo cannot help but be afraid of him. Doc literally has zero F's to give, aside from helping Wyatt Earp, of course.
In the movie. In real life, Doc and Johnny barely had a thing to do w each other, other than Doc shot and killed the man, but not in duel. Doesn't make this any less the greatest damn flick ever made.
@@theplanetruthno. No it wasn’t “huckle bearer”. No huckle bearer doesn’t mean anything. It was never a saying. Some jackass who misheard the line made that stupid rumor up
Everybody knows that Val was robbed, but never mentions Michael. Watch that scene again and watch Johnny Ringo. Watch and see the second he accepts that he has to fight Doc. You can see the second he flips. Brilliant.
Tombstone is one of those exceptionally rare movies where every performer brought their "A" game. Even the very brief appearance by Charlton Heston was superb.
The interaction between them earlier in the film is what gave Ringo that 'oh shit' moment when he realized it was Doc and not Wyatt. Ringo played his hand while showing off in front of Doc. While the crowd was amazed at his talents... Doc stole the show. For someone who was clearly drunk off his ass, not in good shape... yet managed to mimic everything Ringo did while maintaining the cup as if it was a gun... Ringo realized he played into Doc's hand. Doc at that moment knew Ringo's draw... and knew he could beat him. Even Ringo realized he screwed up hence the reaction to realizing he was dealing with the one person he did not want to duel with and ... the results is what you get. Doc... was that guy. Val was amazing as Holliday.
The only times Ringo ran his mouth to Doc was when he was drunk out of his mind. That time you mentioned he was sober and realized how outmatched he was compared to Doc. But Ringo liked that liquid courage a bit too much.
@@snewsh Nah it was also the first time they met in the casino when Doc was drunk and Ringo was sober. He mocks Doc and the two engaged in harsh words which leads to Johnny revealing his draw speed.
One of my all time favorite Westerns!!!! And I totally agree that Val Kilmer was robbed of an Oscar because his acting -- in this role -- was a masterclass. Back in the day, the world on the street was that Val was deemed "difficult" and the Hollywood "powers that be" were threatened by Val's intensity and talent. He was phenomenal as "Doc Holiday". 🥇🏅🎥🎞️🎬🔥🧡❤️💯
My favorite part is when Doc says “Why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over yo grave.” Ringo knew in that moment he was dead. He tried to play it off like he wasn’t scared, but he failed miserably. Doc had nothing to lose at that point, he knew he was dead one way or another, so he had no fear. Ringo on the other hand was terrified of dying. When their eyes met and Doc gives Ringo that smirk, he lets Ringo know. “I gotcha!” The scene is so simple yet perfect and of course Val Kilmer absolutely kills the role of Doc Holiday!
I miss Kilmer, he was always one of my faves, so versatile. He has many good movies. Him playing jim Morrison was so good. Plus the Saint, he played different characters in it.
@@wadewilson8011 The guy had a print of Doc and asked Val Kilmer to sign it. Kilmer did, addressing it to the fan. Personalizing a famous line is fairly standard
I wish I had met Val. I've met Michael twice. Got to hang with him and his family for the second time earlier this year. The first time, I met him as a fan at a horror con. This year when I got to hang with him, his family, and some of the other cast members of ALIENS, it was as a colleague in the film industry. He was a fan of the first horror feature I was one of the producers of, TERRIFIER 2.
It's in my top 5 movies period. I don't care who thinks I'm crazy, but I even dragged my husband and kids to Tombstone when we did our coast to coast road trip (NC to CA and back).
One of the best characters in one of the best movies. It’s criminal that Val didn’t win an Oscar for that role. It was masterful, he completely embodied Doc. So many great lines, his lines during that duel were just cold blooded. The only man Ringo feared, you can see the confidence drain as soon as he realized it was Doc and not Wyatt.
Ringo was never no match for him, even when crazy sick. He would end him and save Wyatt who couldn't take Ringo. Wyatt was brave and could shoot, and was quick enough for most. But he didn't live his life as a gunslinger. QuickDraw was Ringos thing. Problem was, it was Doc's too.. but on a whole nother level.
@@ebbhead20 and like someone in comments above stated. Doc already seen Ringo's draw, at the casino. When Doc made fun of him with his little cup twirling. Which was why Ringo didn't want to deal with Doc, he knew he messed up in showing Doc his draw...
@@nadjasunflower1387 I don't even think that mattered. But Johnny was flashy, and showing off and so on, and that's how real life is. 15 years ago I had a teenager around 18 give me shit either because I knew a shit load of people or that i was a man in dresses and skirts and tons of make up that always had girls around me. Some types of guys can't handle straight men who don't try and do the manly look and shout about them being this and that all the time. He would always tell me, I'm the most dangerous guy in Trekantsområdet, a triangle of 3 cities in Denmark. You don't want to mess with me and so, now after 17 months of trash talk like that he made the mistake of coming at me on a moped. He wanted to break and slide out like on a bike to look cool. And he went flying. You can't do that move on a scooter, and definitely not with your girlfriend on the back so they went flying and landed on the road. I broke down crying with laughter, and he didn't like that. So he took off his helmet and threw it down the street to scare me. Well, I was a guy around 42 or so, and also a martial arts guy since the 70s. So I didn't have the attitude he wanted me to have. He came in my face playing Mr. Dangerous as always and I took him out, enough was enough. So he came up again and I knocked him to the floor again. This happened several times. The whole thing ended with 2 of his pals grabbing me away from him and stopping it. He ended up moving from that whole area and I never saw him again. I think he found it hard that a guy in a skirt had beat him up like that, he never got a punch in. I knew since I was a kid that a guy that talks trash about being the most feared guy in all towns around you is not gonna be a problem. It's the guy that don't talk about his skills and what he can do, you should fear. The one that tells you he's though is a joke. And that's how Holiday saw Johnny, a wannabe telling a real danger, don't mess with me cause..... That's why he did the cup thing, he just couldn't take him serious. He'd seen guys like that before, better ones I'm sure. That's why he didn't have a problem going to meet Ringo, he would remove him for Wyatt and himself while he still could. And that's why I feel Johnny made a mistake of making Holiday be aware of him for real. He'd heard about him, and was annoyed by his antics. But once he met him, he was sure, I really hate this guy. And once Holiday hated you, you was already in a bad place. Irl, once somebody who's actually dangerous hates that you exist you better make good with them. Specially back then. So Ringo was just a question of time. It was bound to happen sooner than later as Doc's time was running out. People saying Doc went there to die, and that was in the script, they don't know what they're talking about. Thinking Doc would let a scum and a rat kill him, it's just dumb. 😎
@@ebbhead20 agreed...but showing someone your draw, before drawing to shoot them. is everything you want to keep hidden. 1) it shows how fast you are. (allowing Doc to judge that he could beat him, and that Wyatt could not) 2) it shows your tells. in this case old west pistol dueling is the ultimate game of poker. and just like poker, you have tells. But this game is life and death, and something like that you want to keep hidden until you have to use it.
@@nadjasunflower1387 well irl they never had draws like the whole meet in the street at noon and so on. But when you talk film its different. And in this one you have the Johnny Ringo character being flashy and in his face, and Doc being more low key with his abilities. And having a hatred for these flashy gunslingers that want this whole persona going on around them. And he was not like that, he didnt respect those guys at all. So the look at me doing flashy gun action was a joke to him, and he showed that by not giving him what he wanted. His reply was more than a joke, he was making a mockery of him. Like this is what your gun nonsense means to me little Johnny. 😏
I remember watching BTS vids of the film and the training that Val and Michael did with the pistols. The instructor basically praised both of them just as the instructor/swordsman praised Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen about their saber skills. To this day, Michael Biehn is still as impressive with it. Whenever a fan brings in a prop gun and ask him to twirl it, he shows out every time.
has there ever been an encounter between a hero and villain where the villain was so thoroughly out matched and it was still so emotionally satisfying? Doc straight up bullied and trashed talked Ringo right through to his last living moment. Straight up savage and yet it was beautiful because it was done out of love for Wyatt.
I think the best thing in this film is that, until this point, you never are shown or know exactly how fast Doc is. His reputation carries him throughout the film, and when he shows up here, the audience believes he is at death's door while Ringo is still in his prime. Also, the audience DOES know how fast Ringo is, which furthers the tension. Then the draw happens, and you discover that Doc was always on another level, and his rep if anything didn't do his skill justice.
We're shown how fast Doc is in his introduction. The first scene he's in he's beating a guy on the draw twice (although the second time was with a knife)
@koopysandwich8423 I'd argue that him outdrawing and outfighting a nobody in a poker game established that he is definitely good, but did not demonstrate the extent of his skill compared to other top talent of the era. I certainly wouldn't use that scene as definitive proof that he was beyond Ringo, but maybe I'm wrong. Still, it did demonstrate his draw, so I suppose my comment is a bit exaggerated. 😅
@@shughan666 I'd argue that regardless of his opponent in that scene, you still see how quick he is with both his pistol and knife. Not to mention, he was sitting down the entire time.

Those words " I'm your Huckleberry" And doc emerging from the shadows with a cloud of smoke is probably one of the coldest scenes in cinematic history 💯
@@j.olivas2634SORRRY. HE DROPPED OUT! IT IS FACT THAT RUSSELL DIRECTED IT .MADE SCRIPT CHANGES AND Basically MADE IT INTO THE MASTERPIECE IT IS Today. EVEN VAL KILMER SAID AS MUCH IN AN INTERVIEW
Can be both. A huckleberry is a substitute for a better fruit. Hence Doc turning up to fight Ringo rather than Wyatt. So "I'm your huckleberry" and Ringo shitting himself.
When Doc says "You ain't no daisy", he means "Give it up you ain't that tough". Daisies are were considered an un-killable nuisance in the garden so calling someone a daisy was the same as praising them for being tough or strong.
So many people overlook that he was hoping Ringo would kill him, too. He didn't want to die in bed. He expected to 'die with his boots on' as was made clear in the shot with his last line. He _wanted_ Ringo to be tough enough to take him with him.
I always read line this different. The old saying for being dead is you will be pushing up daisies. I always interpreted when they said “you’re a daisy if you do” meant if you try then You will be dead and pushing up daisies. Am I the only one?
@nicksterj you are correct without a doubt. And I remember when he said that and it didn’t register for me. It took me years to register the context in how it was used in the movie. Which I can only assume was period accurate. It’s kinda neat actually because now I get another perspective when the lines are said. But I also think if you look at it from the perspective I mentioned it’s a badass comment to make. You’re a daisy if you do = you’re dead if you do. Glad I actually was able to learn the real context… after all these years. :)
There were several theories to how Ringo died and this was one of them. Although it is reported that Doc was in Colorado at the time this happened. Doc was also know to be a very quick draw.
What I love is the speed draw champion said that Doc's draw was the exactly technique youd use to get the fastest draw time possible..From the holster placement on the belt, to the height needed to pull the gun out cleanly without wasting extra movement in the wrist. What's truly funny is that Ringo goes for traditional draw, the one that everyone imitates and that is why he loses. While classic that draw style is much slower because it takes more time to get the guns barrel clear from the holster on top of the extra time it takes to lift the arm/wrist high enough to fire. My god I cherish this film.
You’re absolutely right @farrelfoster!!!! In my mind Val won BSA Oscar in 93. No one has ever portrayed the depth and the depravity of the “once upon a time” Georgia dentist. He was a southern gentleman who could mingle in the crowded foyer of a European King/Queen’s court and recite poetry in Latin. The same “gentleman” would beat you at poker by skill or by pistol, drink you under the table, sleep with your woman, steal your horse, spit up blood while lighting up a cigar and ride on to the next saloon. To me the “real” Doc Holiday is one of history’s most fascinating characters. Back to Val Kilmer though, a masterpiece of acting. You know “it” when you see it and Val literally has “it” oozing out of him while performing for this role. It’s 31 years later and my friends and I still quote this movie every week at least once.
Val Kilmer was such an amazing actor, he truly was. It's such a shame about his health. He's still alive, but hasn't been able to speak in many years because of throat cancer. I know an university program was endeavoring a few years ago to create a voice box for him with his own voice with AI, using recordings from movies, interviews, and so on to recreate his natural voice. I don't know if they ever finished it though.
Good comment, "Doc doesn't need to be careful, he's dead anyway." From accounts i've read, it seemed like he was fearless in any life or death situation. It's like he had a death wish since he didn't want a slow death suffocating in bead. He had some medical training, being a dentist, and got tuberculosis likely from caring for his mother who died from it. It seems like the hard ones to kill are those who don't care to live but still give their best effort.
The death wish is what all these reactors miss in this scene. That's why Doc was shouting "C'mon, Johnny!" at Ringo. Doc wanted two things from this fight: 1) Ringo dead so he wouldn't kill Wyatt (who wasn't fast enough to beat him), and 2) his own death. He *wanted* Ringo to shoot him, but he needed it to happen after he'd made sure Wyatt was safe. Ringo ends up firing down and to the side, much to Doc's disappointment. That's where the "You're no daisy!" comes in.
@@nathancamp6883I mean, Ringo did give it a good effort. It's hard to walk, aim, and shoot to kill after being shot in the head. Honestly, Ringo was dead but still tried. He gets a gold star for effort from me whatever Doc says
Doc loved his cousin all his life too. She was not within his grasp ever, and he never cared a BIT about living or dying, even before he was very sick. He was unhappy all his adult life.
It's true that Doc knew he was dying, but I don't think that lessened the stakes for him here. He knew that, if he lost, Ringo would kill his friend Wyatt. And he wasn't about to let that happen. There's also, I think, a certain amount of professional obligation here for Doc. He's a person who understands violence intimately, and respects it. Ringo was a thug playing with it like a kid with his dad's gun, as was his gang. A corrective example was required.
That hospital scene at the end, when Wyatt tells Doc about how he's "got plenty of friends" and Doc responds with, "I don't." tears me up every time. Kilmer's character wanted to do right by his friend before he died. I wonder if there are any friendships that deep nowadays.
@@chazzmccloud36 I think you're confusing the earlier scene at the creek where Turkey Creek Jack Johnson questions why Holliday isn't just home in bed, "hell, I got lots of friends," and Holliday eventually responds with the "I don't" line. My favorite line from the final hospital scene is Wyatt's last words to his friend: "Thanks for always bein' there, Doc." Isn't that what being a friend is all about?
What I love most about this scene was how deep and how much his friendship with Wyatt was. He wanted to protect his friend because he knew Wyatt couldn't beat him as he said. Also, shows you two people from different worlds can be the closest of friends. Wyatt a sheriff / lawman and Doc a gambler, hustler, outlaw. Wyatt and him loved each other like brothers.
Earlier when Doc met Ringo when Ringo drew and did the gun twirling and Doc did it with the little cup. Doc was really studying how he drew so it played out later
No one has ever deserved an Oscar more than val Kilmer as doc and he wasn’t even nominated here. It’s great to watch people react to one of the best moments in movie history
Real quote from Wyatt Earp: "I found him a loyal friend and good company. He was a dentist whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whom disease had made a vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long, lean blonde fellow nearly dead with consumption and at the same time the most skillful gambler and nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun I ever knew."
"I’m your huckleberry" means "I'm the one for the job." this classic Western lingo is a way to say, “I’ve got you covered” or “I’m the right person for the job.” Basically, if someone asks you if you can do something, you can respond with “I’m your huckleberry” if you have the expertise to help.
Val Kilmer titled his own book "I'm your Huckleberry" and explained it meant ‘I’m your man. You’ve met your match.'” The line comes from the Walter Noble Burns book "Tombstone: An Iliad of the Southwest" which the screenplay was based on.
@@-Thunder I don't even bother with these clowns anymore lol. I'm assuming their just trolls looking to annoy fans of the film, as the whole 'huckle bearer' thing has been disproven a thousand times over at this point....
If you ever needed proof of how illegitimate the Oscars really are, here it is. Kilmer killed it throughout this entire movie and especially this scene. Maybe the most iconic badass moment in cinematic history and Kilmer wasn't even nominated.
I personally like when he's talking to the other deputies, and they ask why he's helping Wyatt. He says "Wyatt Earp is my friend" and the other guy says "Well hell, I got a lot of friends" Docs response is amazing. "I don't"
The difference in shooting between Ringo and Doc is that Ringo is a quick draw where Holiday shoots from the hip. Kilmer even expressed the lean back hip turn to show that. That's why he was smoking while shooting. The cross arm in that particular stance gives you the proper stability to pull off that kind of shot. The attention to detail over the gunfights in this movie is actually pretty top teir. Not at all what most gunfights in the old west were, but dueling did actually progress into this kind of thing with marksmen. There are competitions today with speed shooting and hipfire marksmenship with the same weapons used.
Doc was also hoping that Ringo would be fast enough to kill him too… he did not want to die in a bed with his boots off. That’s why after delivering the kill shot he stood in front Johnny’s gun and practically begged him to fire.
Let's talk about Ringos eyes, like a switch was clicked on, when he says "all right lunger"... he switched into psycho killer mode. Great performance by all actors. One of my top 5 movies I'd say.
Saw this when I was still at school. Kilmer was so good in it, I remember wishing Doc could live even though I knew the story. He was always my fave character, but this performance is remarkable.
I met Michael Biehn at horror cons on two separate occasions. He was there mostly for ALIENS reunions with the other cast members and I was there at the first one as a fan and the second one with my team from TERRIFIER 2. He's such a cool guy. We talked about loving college football over the NFL.
I watched this in the theater 7 times because I'm a lunatic. Absolutely love it. Doc coming out of the shadows is never not THE coolest moment in movies. I love seeing people watch it for the first time. It was an actual phenomenon at the time, but didn't get the Oscar love it deserved. I love people discovering it now. This cast is elite and you never see this kind of shit today unfortunately
Best scene of the movie. I met Michael Biehn, at a convention, a couple of years ago. He looked kind of old and tired. I recited the "Whhhhyyy Johnny Ringo" line and he imediately got that spark in his eye and he gave that grin and the line. Great guy and I was happy to add his signature to my collection.
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Val Kilmer a few years back. I was wearing a T-Shirt from Top Gun with Duck -Duck-Goose. He smiled and gave me and my sister a big hug. The best picture in my collection and the happiest moment of my life.
Val Kilmer gets and rightly deserves praise for his superb work as Doc in Tombstone. That said, this scene would not be anywhere near as epic as it is without Michael Biehn's excellent performance as Johnny Ringo. A movie is only ever as good as its villain, and Biehn hits all his marks in this story perfectly, as he did throughout the movie. Credit where due to them both!
I love the way they had the fight play out. Since the real Johnny Ringo was found slumped against a tree with a bullet in his head and one shot fired from his revolver, this still adds up, even though it's widely accepted that Ringo took his own life.
Most don’t realize in the bar seen Johnny is showing off how fast he is. Doc is studying his draw for a tell. And then Doc copies Ringo moves. He knew he had him beat.
My favorite part of this duel is the disappointment that Doc has for Johnny at the end. He expected to be more impressed by Johnny and when he says "you're no daisy at all" he is just flat out disappointed in Johnny not living up to the way people talked about him.
It never fails me that of so many reactors that are impressed with the cast of this movie fail to recognize Charlton Heston as the ranch owner that allows Doc, Wyatt & Co. to take a break b4 Doc takes out Ringo..
I've seen a few Westerns, Val was the best Doc Holiday. Though the character of Holiday in few movies had that crazy, suicidal thing. Somebody wants to be shot is a dangerous man.
10:09 I remember appreciating they actually made Ringo's death a bit more realistic. Rarely is someone shot and instantly falls dead, even a headshot unless it's a hit to the T box.
If you watch the movie it's a little bit of both him dying and being faster. Doc Holliday always said that he wanted to die with his boots on. Historically The Real Doc Holliday said that. True enough he knew that he was faster than Wyatt and he knew he was a better gunfighter than Johnny Ringo. But he also knew at a slim chance if he lost the fight then he would avoid dying in a hospital bed. He literally had absolutely nothing to lose. And that's a dangerous man. That's why his last words in the movie while in the hospital when he looked down at his bare feet was, "I'll be damned." He in fact did NOT die with his boots on.
One of the greatest iconic scenes ever in movie history! Val Kilmer should have won an Oscar for this role playing Doc Holiday. Pure acting excellence!
If you watch really closely, you can see that even Doc (great acting by Kilmer's face) was concerned [0:45] that he might not beat Ringo because he wasn't feeling well... If he were to have coughed or reacted to his tuberculosis while they were going to shoot, it could have turned out pretty bad.
Go back @ study the encounter between Doc @ Ringo in the bar.Look at how Ringo gunspins then watch Doc.That scene (if you can figure it out)is the reason Ringo is scared of Doc
Indeed. Doc, while piss drunk, copied Ringo’s gun spinning tricks move for move after having only seen them once. He just did it in a silly way that only Ringo realized what he was doing.
@@hisdudeness8328 He didn't match his gun spinning tricks move for move. Not even close. He was mocking him and making light of the situation. It wasn't some revelation on the part of Ringo that Doc can match me move for move or anything. You are reading way too much into that scene. For starters, Doc miming of Ringo was half as fast.
There's also the aborted confrontation in the main street where Ringo's being dragged away one of the cowboys accused Doc of seeing double when Doc delivers the iconic I've got two guns one for each of you. He spins both guns in opposite directions stopping both dead on target with him. Proving even stinking drunk he was incredibly skilled with either hand.
John doc Holliday was a dentist in Georgia. When he found out he had TB he went out West and hoped someone would put him out of his misery. But he was faster than everyone.
❤My all time favorite movie. Val Kilmars Doc and Kurt Russell's Wyatt are top notch. Hell the whole cast was . What a shot indeed ! From under the left arm. Nobody ever seems to notice the very impressive shot it is.
The most important scene for doc in tombstone was when they asked him why he was there - as sick as he was “Wyatt is my friend” doc said. “Hell, I got lots of friends” creek Johnson said Doc paused, before replying, “well, I don’t”
Doc Holliday in tombstone is the perfect example of how someone doesnt need to be big or physically imposing to be terrifying. Men feared Earp because they knew of his reputation and his bravery, they feared Doc because doc didn't need bravery, he was already a dead man walking.
In the beginning, the preacher speaks Spanish, and Johnny Ringo translates after shooting the preacher in the head: “He was quoting the bible, Revelations: 'Behold a pale horse. And the one that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him." Behold a pale horse is referencing Doc Holliday
Daisys are extremely durable flowers they are tough and last a long time after being picked, in “you’re a daisy if you do” and “you’re no daisy at all” the word daisy literally means “bada*$”

What makes Doc Holiday a force to be reckoned with is that Doc was suffering from Tuberculosis. Imagine if he wasn't sick how much better he would be.
If ever there was an injustice at the Oscars, it's that Kilmer wasn't even nominated for best supporting actor
@jp3813 I'm sorry but nobody from true romance deserved a nomination and nobody from that movie was snubbed

Val Kilmer stole the show even though this cast is epic. One of the greatest castings ever. Man, I miss movies like this. Every actor in it was a stud. rest in peace Bill Paxton.
Couldn't of said it better
Man, he was incredible in this and Heat a couple of years later. Such a shame his personal life and reputation halted his career soon after.

Nothing like Tombstone, but have you seen Bone Tomahawk?
@@Hurtman2000 I have not. I want to watch it but, damn! it looks brutal. I will watch it, if only to see Kurt Russell cowboy up. I loved The Hateful Eight. You can't go wrong with Tarantino or Clint. (I could go on all day) I love westerns.
That "I wasn't" has always been just the cold bloodest damn line delivery ever.
And considering he challenged Ringo as soon as Ringo was going after Wyatt.
also Clint Eastwood's "Yeah." to Little Bill in Unforgiven.
When a man says that, be prepared to have your tail handed to you. Don't start nothin, won't be nothin
That's the thing. I don't know why, but Doc always sounded oddly innocent or childlike in that moment. Like he was saying "You said you wanted to do this, didn't you mean it?"
"Say when". Kilmer should have won awards for this role, period. Every line (great writing!!!) was/is quotable.
Absolutely stellar performance. It was just during a great year for movies in general
Id give that to the final scene of Unforgiven
A line still used by anyone testing the gov to come take guns like they say

Val Kilmer was robbed of an Oscar
Nope. Nomination, yes. Gene Hackman winning for Unforgiven is not a travesty. He killed it as Little Bill.
For sure.
“I’m afraid the strain was more than he could bear.” Such an underrated line/delivery.
"I wasn't" A badass line is all in the delivery.
For sure. And right before he delivers it, is the first time in the whole movie we actually see fear on Johnny Ringo's face.
I think what caught my eyes the most is how expressive Johnny is in the eyes, but for Doc only his mouth moves. That's some stone cold shit right there.
I love the little detail of Doc smoking a cigarette...While he has tuberculosis. It tells you everything you need to know about his character.
That’s why Johnny called out Wyatt instead of Doc. He knew he could beat Wyatt but he knew Doc would kill him. Doc loved Wyatt and he would do anything to protect him. Doc was that friend that you need when your back is against the wall.
Cowboy- Why you doin this Doc? You should be home in bed.
Doc- Wyatt is my friend.
Cowboy- Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc- I don't.

@@Demiurge13 Henry Hooker, It was Hooker's ranch where Doc stayed when he was supposedly too sick just before he shot Ringo
The “I wasn’t “ would turn your blood to ice.
Val Kilmer got robbed at the academy awards that year without question. Best supporting actor.
Both Val and Micheal were SO good in their rolls in this movie, its almost frightening. Almost perfect character acting.
Doc Holliday is Val Klimer's greatest role. No one has ever played the character better and I don't think anyone ever will.
I miss Kilmer, he was always one of my faves, so versatile. He has many good movies. Him playing jim Morrison was so good. Plus the Saint, he played different characters in it.
I would argue that his role as Chris in HEAT is equally as impressive.
If I met the real Doc Holliday, I would probably be disappointed he wasn't as cool as Val Kilmer's Doc.

Remember it’s not that Doc thought he was dying he knew he was faster and Wyatt wasn’t.😂
Ringo was never no match for him, even when crazy sick. He would end him and save Wyatt who couldn't take Ringo. Wyatt was brave and could shoot, and was quick enough for most.
(allowing Doc to judge that he could beat him, and that Wyatt could not)
2) it shows your tells. in this case old west pistol dueling is the ultimate game of poker. and just like poker, you have tells.
That spin back into the holster is incredible!
Actually, you're shown how quick of a draw Doc was in his introduction at the poker table when dude tried to call Doc out after Doc took his money.
@@shughan666 I'd argue that regardless of his opponent in that scene, you still see how quick he is with both his pistol and knife. Not to mention, he was sitting down the entire time.

These are some absolutely awesome reactions… i love these responses
When Doc says "You ain't no daisy", he means "Give it up you ain't that tough". Daisies are were considered an un-killable nuisance in the garden so calling someone a daisy was the same as praising them for being tough or strong.
So many people overlook that he was hoping Ringo would kill him, too. He didn't want to die in bed. He expected to 'die with his boots on' as was made clear in the shot with his last line. He _wanted_ Ringo to be tough enough to take him with him.
When you pick a bouquet of wild flowers, the daisy lasted longer than all others. Last man standing, yes, toughest.
Really not that complicated. He's saying you're not as good as you thought you were
I always read line this different.
Awesome breakdown
Val Kilmer was such an amazing actor, he truly was. It's such a shame about his health. He's still alive, but hasn't been able to speak in many years because of throat cancer. I know an university program was endeavoring a few years ago to create a voice box for him with his own voice with AI, using recordings from movies, interviews, and so on to recreate his natural voice. I don't know if they ever finished it though.
Yeah, I met him back in 2019, sadly of course this was post cancer, but still.

@@trevellyann I guess kids don't watch movies the same way as we used to huh? Either way, fun to see people seeing it for the first time!
I watched this video just to see that scene over and over. Reactions don’t really add anything for me.
That's where the "You're no daisy!" comes in.
yup...Doc wasn't going to lay down, if you were going to get him, you had to earn it...
I saw this in the theater. When Doc revealed himself there was a huge cheer from the audience. I’ll always remember that moment. Well done Val Kilmer.
I watched an interview with Michael Biehn and he said that he and Val Kilmer were not happy with this scene so they choreographed it themselves.
It's "I'm your HUCKLE bearer. It's the handles on the side of the casket.
Huckle Bearer: A huckle bearer is a pallbearer who carries a casket, with the term "huckle" referring to the handle on a casket.
@nicksterj I guess you're right - apparently, this term was made up, _after_ the movie came out 👍
If you ever needed proof of how illegitimate the Oscars really are, here it is. Kilmer killed it throughout this entire movie and especially this scene. Maybe the most iconic badass moment in cinematic history and Kilmer wasn't even nominated.
The most amazing thing about these reactions, is how many people havent actually seen Tombstone
I'm afraid the strain was more than he could bare. Gotta love doc 🤠😂
I personally like when he's talking to the other deputies, and they ask why he's helping Wyatt. He says "Wyatt Earp is my friend" and the other guy says "Well hell, I got a lot of friends"
Docs response is amazing.
TOO COOL TO KNOW!@@!❤
Doc was also hoping that Ringo would be fast enough to kill him too… he did not want to die in a bed with his boots off.
Loved the look on Michael Biehn's (Ringo) face on that "Alright lunger, let's do it." Underrated actor imo.
Happy I've met Michael and Val.
To say that "Tombstone is picking up...finally" should be a felony
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Val Kilmer a few years back. I was wearing a T-Shirt from Top Gun with Duck -Duck-Goose. He smiled and gave me and my sister a big hug. The best picture in my collection and the happiest moment of my life.
"You look like someone just walked over your grave."
One of the best lines ever.
Just noticed that
-Johnny was gonna shoot him from his weak side😂
- Say when gave Johnny the advantage of making the first move...
You can see the exact second the crazy switch flips in Johnny's eyes in that scene. The exact _second._ Michael Beihn was ever so good.
Doc was indeed a Doctor .Although a DDS he would have studied anatomy. By shooting Ringo in the left half of his , paralyzed his right side
Exactly, a lot of people miss that
Val Kilmer gets and rightly deserves praise for his superb work as Doc in Tombstone.
@digitalsoldiers-1742, Sadly, a good number of them don't even know who Heston is.
Life lesson: one I've learned. That smirk, you're about to get your ass handed to you. Been on both sides of that.
For me the coldest thing about this is that Doc didn't even need to put down his smoke.
It's a crime that Val Kilmer wasn't nominated for an oscar for this role.
Ringo hides his fear by acting crazy
That's 100% what I see when he says "Alright lunger," with those crazy eyes. He's psyching himself up for a fight he's not sure he can win.
I've seen a few Westerns, Val was the best Doc Holiday. Though the character of Holiday in few movies had that crazy, suicidal thing. Somebody wants to be shot is a dangerous man.
Doc Holiday taunting a dying man he just shot. I forgot how cold this scene is.
Doc trashtalking Ringo as he falls to his death is....chef's kiss.
You know you're really in trouble when you say you were just fooling about but the other guy says "I wasn't."
Truth
10:09 I remember appreciating they actually made Ringo's death a bit more realistic. Rarely is someone shot and instantly falls dead, even a headshot unless it's a hit to the T box.
I appreciated this too. Much more realistic than most movie deaths.
Doc also clearly didn't gaf if he died though
Val Kilmer should have one and Oscar for this role! He was at his top game
“I wasn’t” is such a bad ass line, the fact that Kilmer got nothing for this film, is a slap in the face.
"I'm your huckleberry''.....my fav line EVER!!
the best line in cinematic history
John doc Holliday was a dentist in Georgia. When he found out he had TB he went out West and hoped someone would put him out of his misery. But he was faster than everyone.
Val Kilmer was one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. This movie and The Doors as Jim Morrison. Excellence!!
“Hell, I got lots of friends” creek Johnson said
Doc paused, before replying, “well, I don’t”
Doc Holliday in tombstone is the perfect example of how someone doesnt need to be big or physically imposing to be terrifying. Men feared Earp because they knew of his reputation and his bravery, they feared Doc because doc didn't need bravery, he was already a dead man walking.
The fact that Doc Holliday knew he was terminally ill, made him exceptionally dangerous.
Glad people are discovering this movie - it's a masterpiece.
This was the best scene in a Western ever !!!
