That part of the movie was to show Ringo's knowledge of Shakespeare. Ringo never had any college education as he left home at the age of 18. But he read a lot of Shakespeare and that gave people the impression he had a college education.

I have met Val Kilmer in person before he lost his voice and he said this was his favorite role. This and his portrayal of Jim Morrison made him a great actor in my books.
I never met him, but have x-ed him several times and saw him portraying Twain in person right and he complained of throat pain after it. Grew up in the same childhood as you see in the documentary Val. He is really similar to one of my brothers from another mother back then. Me and my buddies heard he was going to play Morrison and we were not disappointed. Ecellent actor.
I have loved and watched him since “Top Secret.” At the time I didn’t know he was also quite the singer. He actually did a Soundtrack album for that got him to make full versions of the silly songs in the movie. He also played Jim Morrison and sang his own Doors songs for that. He has had some great roles and I was waiting to see what was next. I always thought that he was the more talented actor than Tom Cruise. (Not to poop on Cruise. I have heard nothing but nice things about him from other actors and crew members.)

I remember watching this movie with my great grandpa when I was little and admiring Doc when he said that line "Wyatt Earp is my friend...", Seeing brotherhood being valued like that gave me chills and made me want to always be a loyal and dependable friend like Doc Holliday.

Took me a while to realize there’s a lot of nuances with Doc’s reply with his cup. While everyone was laughing and whistling during Ringo’s demonstration, Doc was memorizing it all the time. When Doc responded he repeated every move back to Ringo showing that he was the better gun fighter even when drunk. Ringo knew it by the look in his eyes, and that’s why he looked as he did when he realized it was Doc by the Oak tree before their duel. Watch it back.
It's one thing when a man isn't afraid to die, it's a whole other thing when he knows he's dying and is looking for that last big thrill so he can make his exit on his terms. Chilling.

As someone who flips balisongs and spins revolvers for the fun of it, I promise these actors spent a lot of time on this. Just learning to do a behind the 8-ball (one of the most common balisong flips) takes time and practice. To fit that into their acting schedule is impressive

Tombstone... anytime I see it on I will watch it, doesn't matter where in the movie or what I've been doing.. just a great movie. Val Kilmer stole every scene he was in while adding a shine to the other characters.. great actors in their own right but even better with Val playing his part. Love the movie, love the man.

I grew up when westerns ruled television, and I saw many good ones, on t.v. and movie theater. "Tombstone" is the best western I've ever seen and Val Kilmer WAS the best supporting actor that year. Kudos to the entire cast and especially to Kurt Russell. I remember watching him in Disney productions when he was a kid, and when I heard he was going to play the part of Wyatt Earp, I didn't think he was the right actor for the part. Boy, did he make me glad I was wrong! He was excellent!

Watched this great movie for the first time 1996. Took me 17 years to fully understand all the dialogue in it. This is real, undiluted American Southern accent. And still one of my favorite movies of time. Val Kilmer should have won Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Doc grew up in Griffin, GA, about 75 miles from my hometown in Columbus (more or less). I spent most of my life before going into the Air Force hearing that exact accent from practically everyone I knew. I've still got a trace of it myself, even though I haven't lived there in years and it only comes out if I'm really angry, really tired, or really drunk 😛
Kilmer and Biehn were epic enemies in this movie. I wish we had more of them together. Both were EPIC actors that never really got the high status they deserved.

Well you’d be happy to know there was allot of adlibs done by Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell. Dialog that fit situations. No one knows what the real words Doc said in real life. So they gave them similar situations and dialog. But when Doc and Wyatt changed or ad libed words they went with it. Good for the actors. Good decisions by the writers and the director. They should have all gotten awards for this movie.
That wasn't by accident. Kilmer did his research, including commissioning a linguistics expert for that time period. He wanted to know what kind of vocabulary, accent, intonation, and inflection a man like Holiday would use, given his education and geographical upbringing, eventually becoming a southern aristocrat. Kilmer practiced and refined his delivery to perfection. I remember an ET interview he did when this was released, where he said ultimately he was shooting for a very subtle, well-educated, Foghorn Leghorn. Made sense. His practice and refinement certainly paid off.

The scene where Ringo does the pistol dance in Docs face in front of everyone is one of the greatest beginnings to a character rivalry in all of film. Doc is a notorious marvel of a professional poker player and renowned, feared pistoleer of the west. Even as far as to say one of the best if not the best. Johnny Ringo also a notorious cowboy whose business is violence and also considered one of the best if not the best pistoleer in the west. When he does the pistol dance in docs face it's a challenge. He does the routine flawlessly, displaying his skill with pistols to flaunt and challenge docs notoriety and his skill to the death. When doc does the dance with a cup, he's mocking him, but the eye contact and the look on both of their faces, indicates Ringo is fearful of him and believes he is not good enough to truly beat holiday. Holiday doesn't even get serious with it, he makes it a joke. But they know behind the smooth words and light manner, he means business and can shoot you probably better. It's great scene.
The conversation in Latin is even better! D-“In wine there is truth.” JR-"do what you do.” D-“Let the Jew Apella believe it; not I” JR “Experience is the teacher of fools.” Docs last line sets it off, "Rest in peace!"
The dance with the cup is indeed a way to mock Ringo, but I think also is a way in which inadvertently Doc displays his superior gun handling skills, how? because a cup is way lighter than a pistol, so is harder to control. And You're right, that scene is one of the greatest beginnings to a character rivalry. (Another film that portrays this kind of rivalry, where each part respect the other, is Heat, with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.)
Except none of us have a God damn clue if the real Doc Holiday was anything like that. The only education was Validosta Institute, and then he said he went to dental school in Baltimore but no schools there have a record of him. He very well may have been extremely uncouth.

The greatest thing about this role is the subtlety of his acting. The little gestures, stealing the money after he leaves the table. Drawing his gun and hiding it behind his back. It’s not the lines that made this role legendary,it’s everything else.

I didn't realise how immensely talented Val Kilmer is until I watched Tombstone. He's as good as De Niro or Marlon Brando, or Lawrence Ollivier, truly up there with the greats.

Its the little body movements and the tone at which Kilmer says things are what makes this character amazing. The way he says, "where you going with that shotgun" with that head tilt. Those are the subtle things that make the character memorable.
Val Kilmer should have gotten for his performance as Doc Holliday. He was the first actor to portray Doc as a Southerner, including the proper accent. He was the first to use contemporary American phrases. It is such a shame he passed from Cancer.
I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this, but when Doc responds in kind to Ringo's little string of Latin phrases, the last thing he says to Ringo translates to "Rest In Peace". Priceless... albeit missed by the vast majority of film goers.
You can’t have this without adding the ending scene with Kilmer and Ringo in their final shootout scene. That’s where you get the famous line “why Ringo, you look like someone just walked over your grave.”
What made this film so great was casting not only Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday but also Michel Biehn as Johnny Ringo. Both actors gave topnotch performances and their interactions produced some of the best highlights of the film. Hats off to the casting crew.
Biehn said in an interview that they went out and, on their own time, put in a lot of extra work on their scenes together. And it shows. btw, he also said he got along with Val Kilmer just fine.

Outstanding performance as Doc Holiday! I've watched this films countless times throughout the years and never grow tired of it! One of my favorite lines was when a cowboy tells Doc Holiday "You nothing but a drunk piano player! As a matter of fact, you're seeing double!" Val nailed it doing doc.dennis Quaid had a more sinister look in his eyes. But Val was more real when he coughed, you could see the blood from his mouth.

Doc says it with his accent in a way that it sounds like either, basically toying with people saying "I'm the man who will send you to your grave." Number 1 best movie of all time. Val Kilmer has some of the best movies ever made and got no credit for the masterful acting. There’s so many movies people have never heard of that he was amazing in. The salton sea is also great.
Everyone is commenting on how Kilmer didn't get an Oscar for his role. At the time, everyone was pushing the Kevin Coster Wyatt Earp movie that came out at the same time. The critics ignored this movie because of the Coster movie. The public didn't. No one remembers Costers movie, and Tombstone has become a beloved classic. Amazing performances by all the cast, but Kilmers Doc Holliday performance was iconic.
The best parts are when Wyatt looked at Doc with that smile like "Doc, your turn" and Doc did the exact routine as Ringo but with a cup. Everyone in that room knew who was better; Plus Doc did it while drunk.

Tombstone was filmed South and West of Santa Fe at the JW Eaves Ranch. Helluva summer. Kilmer's Ranch is many miles east, even east of Pecos, NM.

Tombstone... anytime I see it on I will watch it, doesn't matter where in the movie or what I've been doing.. just a great movie. Val Kilmer stole every scene he was in while adding a shine to the other characters.. great actors in their own right but even better with Val playing his part. Love the movie, love the man.

I grew up when westerns ruled television, and I saw many good ones, on t.v. and movie theater. "Tombstone" is the best western I've ever seen and Val Kilmer WAS the best supporting actor that year. Kudos to the entire cast and especially to Kurt Russell. I remember watching him in Disney productions when he was a kid, and when I heard he was going to play the part of Wyatt Earp, I didn't think he was the right actor for the part. Boy, did he make me glad I was wrong! He was excellent!

The Good the Bad the Ugly.. hmmmm I did see it but I have never put it on at any place in the movie and stopped what I was doing to rewatch it... Not saying that it wasn't good just I didn't find it as memorable as TombStone. Never was much of a fan of Clint Eastwood's tight-lipped acting until he played craggy older men.
I agree with most of what you have said about Val being the best supporting actor that year. His acting performance rivels some of the best ever in any movie, such as Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight. But the best Western I've had the pleasure of watching is "Young Guns".

Watched this great movie for the first time 1996. Took me 17 years to fully understand all the dialogue in it. This is real, undiluted American Southern accent. And still one of my favorite movies of time. Val Kilmer should have won Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

@@samhugh4965 Even more particular, an Antebellum North Georgia accent. People still talk like that there, at least once you get about 50 miles or so away from Atlanta. Doc grew up in Griffin, GA, about 75 miles from my hometown in Columbus (more or less). I spent most of my life before going into the Air Force hearing that exact accent from practically everyone I knew. I've still got a trace of it myself, even though I haven't lived there in years and it only comes out if I'm really angry, really tired, or really drunk 😛
Kilmer and Biehn were epic enemies in this movie. I wish we had more of them together.

Val gave a masterful performance of Doc Holiday. He outshined a star studded cast of actors that were and still are top shelf.

Well you’d be happy to know there was allot of adlibs done by Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell. Dialog that fit situations. No one knows what the real words Doc said in real life. So they gave them similar situations and dialog. But when Doc and Wyatt changed or ad libed words they went with it. Good for the actors. Good decisions by the writers and the director. They should have all gotten awards for this movie.
That wasn't by accident. Kilmer did his research, including commissioning a linguistics expert for that time period. He wanted to know what kind of vocabulary, accent, intonation, and inflection a man like Holiday would use, given his education and geographical upbringing, eventually becoming a southern aristocrat. Kilmer practiced and refined his delivery to perfection. I remember an ET interview he did when this was released, where he said ultimately he was shooting for a very subtle, well-educated, Foghorn Leghorn. Made sense. His practice and refinement certainly paid off.

The scene where Ringo does the pistol dance in Docs face in front of everyone is one of the greatest beginnings to a character rivalry in all of film. Doc is a notorious marvel of a professional poker player and renowned, feared pistoleer of the west. Even as far as to say one of the best if not the best. Johnny Ringo also a notorious cowboy whose business is violence and also considered one of the best if not the best pistoleer in the west. When he does the pistol dance in docs face it's a challenge. He does the routine flawlessly, displaying his skill with pistols to flaunt and challenge docs notoriety and his skill to the death. When doc does the dance with a cup, he's mocking him, but the eye contact and the look on both of their faces, indicates Ringo is fearful of him and believes he is not good enough to truly beat holiday. Holiday doesn't even get serious with it, he makes it a joke. But they know behind the smooth words and light manner, he means business and can shoot you probably better. It's great scene.
The conversation in Latin is even better! D-“In wine there is truth.” JR-"do what you do.” D-“Let the Jew Apella believe it; not I” JR “Experience is the teacher of fools.” Docs last line sets it off, "Rest in peace!"
Absolutely the best rivalry in all of cinema
The dance with the cup is indeed a way to mock Ringo, but I think also is a way in which inadvertently Doc displays his superior gun handling skills, how? because a cup is way lighter than a pistol, so is harder to control. And You're right, that scene is one of the greatest beginnings to a character rivalry. (Another film that portrays this kind of rivalry, where each part respect the other, is Heat, with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.)
You might also notice that he perfectly copies every movement that Johnny made with his pistol, when he did it with the cup. To further mock him
Ringo also gave away a lot of his movements with that display that I’m sure Doc took note of…
No one will ever play a better Doc Holiday than Val Kilmer. The man was practically made for this role.
Except none of us have a God damn clue if the real Doc Holiday was anything like that. The only education was Validosta Institute, and then he said he went to dental school in Baltimore but no schools there have a record of him.
He very well may have been extremely uncouth.

The greatest thing about this role is the subtlety of his acting. The little gestures, stealing the money after he leaves the table. Drawing his gun and hiding it behind his back. It’s not the lines that made this role legendary,it’s everything else.

Its the little body movements and the tone at which Kilmer says things are what makes this character amazing. The way he says, "where you going with that shotgun" with that head tilt. Those are the subtle things that make the character memorable.
Val Kilmer should have gotten for his performance as Doc Holliday. He was the first actor to portray Doc as a Southerner, including the proper accent. He was the first to use contemporary American phrases. It is such a shame he passed from Cancer.

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this, but when Doc responds in kind to Ringo's little string of Latin phrases, the last thing he says to Ringo translates to "Rest In Peace". Priceless... albeit missed by the vast majority of film goers.

What made this film so great was casting not only Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday but also Michel Biehn as Johnny Ringo. Both actors gave topnotch performances and their interactions produced some of the best highlights of the film. Hats off to the casting crew.
Biehn said in an interview that they went out and, on their own time, put in a lot of extra work on their scenes together. And it shows. btw, he also said he got along with Val Kilmer just fine.

The fact that Val Kilmer basically stole the spotlight from everyone else because of his ridiculously amazing performance is one thing. The fact that he stole it away from several other great actors who gave absolutely stellar performances of their own in this film puts it on a whole other level.

Doc says it with his accent in a way that it sounds like either, basically toying with people saying "I'm the man who will send you to your grave." It's not misunderstood, he's literally saying both to mock people.

Everyone is commenting on how Kilmer didn't get an Oscar for his role. At the time, everyone was pushing the Kevin Coster Wyatt Earp movie that came out at the same time. The critics ignored this movie because of the Coster movie. The public didn't. No one remembers Costers movie, and Tombstone has become a beloved classic. Amazing performances by all the cast, but Kilmers Doc Holliday performance was iconic.
The best parts are when Wyatt looked at Doc with that smile like "Doc, your turn" and Doc did the exact routine as Ringo but with a cup. Everyone in that room knew who was better; Plus Doc did it while drunk.
