    _First Blood_ has what could be my favorite BTS showbiz story of all time. When David Morrell sold the film rights to the novel, his lawyer wanted to charge him an extra $500 to have a clause put into the contract allowing Morrell to share in any merchandising and sequel revenues. Morrell thought his lawyer was crazy. "What merchandising?" he said. "This is a book about a psychotic killer! Who's going to want to make toys and lunchboxes out of that? And what sequel? Everyone's dead at the end!" "Sit down, son," his lawyer said gently. "You don't understand Hollywood. They can do anything they want to with this book. Hell, they could turn it into a musical if they wanted." So Morrell thought it over, and reluctantly forked over the $500. He later said it was the best money he ever spent. That clause in his contract made him millions.

    THX is an auditorium quality certification. If a theater is inspected and meets soundproofing and equipment requirements it gets a THX plaque. Lucas invented it because he realized that much of the sound of Star Wars that he put so much personal effort in to had been butchered by most theaters poor sound quality at the time. He made it clear to theater owners that he wanted Empire Strikes Back and Indiana Jones to play in THX theaters only. The rest is history.

    This series is seriously award worthy. I was so lucky to have been film reviewer for my college newspaper back then; the greatest time in history to be one. I saw so many of these movies free and reviewed them, good and bad. And not just new films, but all the old classics played literally everywhere. Right before VHS and cable really took off, there was a huge cinema culture. Movies were screened literally everywhere: in bars, on campuses, at museums, symphony halls, you name it. A time and a culture now sadly gone, or at least morphed into something less magical. These are some sweet memories.

      Admittedly hot takes here: I actually enjoy Amityville 2 and Grease 2 more (the former because it doesn’t have nearly as many stretches of little happening and was gutsy in how it completely disregard the actual story instead of pretending to be a faithful depiction, and the latter because it has more songs I actually like and is a lot more honest about how douchey it’s characters are).

    At the 1983 Oscars Richard Attenborough remarked on E.T. during his Gandhi acceptance speech, saying "Steven Spielberg makes much more original and exciting films than myself." Very generous of him. Later during the press interviews, Sir Richard quietly told Spielberg in his ear; "You should be holding this award, for Best Director." Obviously this would've been very flattering for Spielberg especially being a huge admirer of Attenborough's work. And of course he'd cast him in Jurassic Park a decade later.

    I saw Gandhi for the first time almost 9 months ago after seeing that it won Best Picture over ET. So I gave it a watch and while I don't think it's as great as ET, I still see it as one of the great biographical films I've ever seen in my entire life. An amazing performance from Ben Kingsley, beautiful sets and costumes, impressive makeup, a first rate instrumental score, great editing, great sound design, great writing, great directing and brilliant cinematography. I would call it one of my all time favorite Best Picture winners.

    • @shanemcdonough9518
      @shanemcdonough9518 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I don't think that Gandhi and E.T. would make a good crossover. They are totally different films. And fun fact, Richard Attenborough, the director of Gandhi was in Steven Spielberg's film Jurassic Park where he played as Dr John Hammond and Steven Spielberg directed E.T. So technically you would say that there is a crossover. And Ben Kingsley played as Itzhak Stern in Schindler's List which was also directed by Steven Spielberg and like Gandhi also won Best Picture at the Oscars in 1994.

    I can’t tell you how much I appreciate these wonderfully long dives into nostalgia, even though I was born after the 80’s. They’re weirdly fascinating and comforting.

    I look forward to whenever these are posted. Also for your musical March in September may I recommend Forbidden Zone. It is if Pink Floyd's The Wall, Alice in Wonderland, and Yellow Submarine did drugs together and it is the result directed by Danny Elfman's brother Richard Elfman and stars Hervé from Fantasy Island.
    I hope midnight screenings will be returning soon as well.

    I always look forward to these every year, not just for the Snob's acerbic wit and brilliant non-sequiter humour, but also the highlighting of great movies, and suggestions for stuff I've never seen but might really want to. Bravo, Snob. Long may this series continue

    I have an E.T. fear myself... Even though I know it is a good movie, I still can't bear to see it due to my past trauma with it following the cornfield scene near the beginning. My personal favorites of 1982 are Firefox, TRON, Blade Runner, and First Blood.

Just finished it in its entirety , I’ve been a sub for about six months - please keep up the excellent content / work. Thanks

      Same here, '83 is right up there as one of my favorite years for movies (84 too!) I took time off between hs and college and saw pretty much everything at the cinema. My only regret is not seeing The Right Stuff on the big screen 😕
