25 years ago I was a room service waiter in a hotel and Dan Aykroyd stayed there while they were opening a House of Blues. He ordered a bunch of food for a small party he was throwing, and he was probably the nicest guest I ever dealt with - as soon as the door opened, he started yelling at people to get out of my way so I could get the food in, and he tipped me a hundred dollars.
I was only there for like five minutes, but in that time he managed to impress me as a really warm, friendly, genuine guy.
Love hearing about how nice the actors I grew up watching are. Except Chase he sounds like an a hole

I would bet that the studio didn't use it to prevent the association with any of the National Lampoon's movies. All and all I agree that it is a shame not to use Vallejo's work.

@@jackcrow9736 I don't know man. Somehow I think the film is already tied to all of the National Lampoon Vacation films because of Chase. That poster was a work of art, I agree with both of you that the decision not to use that piece for the marketing was a travesty of justice.

I bet that if they had gone with Akroyd's cut, and using the Vallejo poster, it would have done MUCH better..
Nothing but trouble is an under appreciated classic. Bat shit insane but extremely enjoyable.
Why is it a classic? Because of it's age? It surely isn't because of it's quality, because the humour isn't very good, mostly corny and childish. A chuckle here and there, but that's it. As a comedy it fails, everything is a little bit off. It was a very flawed production and it shows. If you call this a classic, then every mediocre movie can be a classic. Aykroyd, Candy and all the other people involved had done real classics like "Ghostbusters", "Blues Brothers", "Home Alone", "Animal House" and so on. "Nothing but trouble" is amusing, maybe its a bit underrated in the way, that it isn't terrible, but a classic? Nah, get outta here! 6/10 at best. Have seen the movie a couple of minutes ago for the first time, a lot of wasted talent and potential, but much better than "Neighbors" with Aykroyd and Belushi. There are people who even call that movie a classic. Shows that the word classic doesn't mean anything anymore, if mediocre or even flatout bad movies are called classics for no reason whatsoever. Reminds me of these people that call every good movie, that is a little on the budget side, a trash movie, when in fact, trashfilms are something entirely different.

I absolutely love this movie, would give anything for a widescreen director's cut. I know he said most hate this movie, but almost 30 years later, I think Most don't even know it exists. The people I've introduced to it have always found it hilarious.

John Candy was such a class act. By all accounts he was such a pleasant person. Never heard an unkind word about him.

I knew it flopped at the box office but I was under the impression it was a cult hit nowadays. I loved it and still do.
It reminds me of another dark comedy called Cable Guy that wasn't well received in the box office. Both those movies are hilarious and scary at the same time

Don G. Because the adults it was aimed at didn't like it but their kids did. I remember my parents renting it at blockbuster, they hated it gave it to us to watch and we loved it. They just didn't anticipate the age reaction

The story about Chevy Chase is funny because he just did an interview in 2017 where he stated that he did not know why people in hollywood didn't want it work with him. The interview was sad because he genuinely couldn't see he treated people badly.

If you haven't already, look up the backstory for his Roast in the mid 90s. It's so grim. It was never aired again.

MrBracey100 This sort of thing is the bread and butter of those good folks over at Shout! Factory. At the very least I’d like to see a proper widescreen release of this movie, and if anybody would do it, it’d be them. Let us see it the way it was meant to be seen, don’t give us that pan and scan crap.
Captain Brandon Horror Lover A directors cut and commentary really would be nice. I feel like this is a film that’s harmed more than helped by having stuff trimmed off. Especially since I imagine Dan has more interesting stories to tell about that movie’s making then we even know now. I sure hope he doesn’t feel too badly about having made this movie that he wouldn’t feel like contributing to a director’s commentary or assisting in a restoration of the print if such a thing were necessary. That’d be sad. But even just getting the film we already have in wide screen would be enough for me, personally. A director’s cut and commentary would be awesome, don’t get me wrong; just not holding my breath over it.
This needs to happen. Like we need to get a petition up or something. I thought this movie had a lot of brilliance to it, and I'd love to see the original vision with the gore and violence left in. I think that'd take it up a level.

Rented it on my 13th birthday when it came out on video.
It STUNK. It had so much potential, all this production design, a big cast and it was just straight-up unfunny garbage. It could have been such a roller coaster of comedy and horror.

I think its a GenX movie. We grew up loving Chevy, Aykroyd, and Candy. Even Taylor Negron was great. Me and my friends used to recite lines from this from Middle School to this day.

I was 11 and we all loved the old school SNL/SCTV casts. Probably due to our parents loving them also. These people were/are comedic geniuses. If we weren't reciting lines from Fletch or Caddyshack (even Caddyshack 2) then we were spitting out lines from Armed and Dangerous, Loose Cannons, Spies Like Us, Ghostbusters, etc. The list is endless.

Classic. I loved this movie.
One of my favorite movies ever. So many great lines. "Sell porkbellies, buy gold" is perhaps the best. This movie failed because they didn't market it. I was 12 in 1991 and it came on HBO one day. I saw the title credits...Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, John Candy, and Dan Aykroyd. I thought wow what is this? I'd never heard of it. I watched it simply for the stars and loved it. Though thought "wtf am I watching?" several times. I went out of my way to show it to my friends and they all loved it. This movie is only "loved by few" because few have been lucky enough to see it.

Reading Al Franken's book chronicling the early days of SNL really revealed what a generous professional Aykroyd was.
This movie has history at WB and in Hollywood... and to your answer it was his ego. He wanted to write, direct, produce, act to have control on virtuality every decision. This was his labor of love and wanted to do what hr wanted and didnt want anyone to tell him no and for the most part no one did and when someone did he balked at them, even had 2 of my friends fired

I'm pretty sure that the house from that movie was used in an episode of the show. If you've seen the episode 'Death Of Some Salesmen', it is very much like a lot like it right down to a similar plot and one actor playing multiple roles, in the case of the episode it's Tim Curry.

I was just watching a documentary on Netflix about the evolution of hip-hop where they profiled the group Digital Underground. They showed a clip from a video they did for the track “Same Song” and it was done for THIS movie. Dan Aykroyd even cameos in the video!

I didn't see this for the first time until last year and I LOVED it, I have since watched it several more times and it's definitely become one of my go-to favorites. It's just so outlandish and erratic and fun

This is a cult classic. Whenever I watched this, I always wondered where the heck is this place? It looked completely real and shows what a great job the production team did.

Shout Factory has a Blu-Ray coming on 10/26/2021! No director’s cut but Aykroyd will have an interview on the release.
Ahh, the good ole days when a few craftsmen could come together and make a great looking film, based off one man's crazy idea. This would never be made today by a major studio.
Probably because movies like this discourage studios from trusting too much in one man's vision.
My father--who hates anything even remotely related to cannibalism--loves this bizarre film. If his reaction is even remotely indicative of the general consensus, then Nothing But Trouble is a masterpiece.

I was 6 when this movie first came, out and I grew up watching it countless times. All my friends over the years that have saw it, or I showed it too all loved it. One of one all-time favs for sure!

My friends and I discovered this a few years after it was made when we were about 11/12. We all fell in love with how ridiculous it is and would watch it several times a year. I think I still have my old VHS copy that I recorded from someone else's legit tape.
This movie is an absolute classic. If it flopped at the box office its because it wasn't promoted enough by the studio. Even today, most people I talk to about this movie have no idea it even exists

I loved this movie Cecil. You always cover the films that people didn't know how to react to but spoke to me for some reason. Like Disturbing Behavior this film was a messy thrill ride and you conveyed that perfectly.

I totally agree about the whole Chevy Chase thing. The only film I thought he was hilarious in was Christmas Vacation. Other than that, I can't stand Chase. I wonder if Nothing but Trouble would've done a lot better in theaters had they cast a better lead. Perhaps Bill Murray?

If I were to use the the "Mandela Device" collecting dust in my lab to reach into an alternate universe I would pick out the version of this movie where they cast Rick Moranis instead of Chevy Chase. His take on the character would be easier to relate to and route for, building to a heroic arc. Also experience with horror comedy and never phoned in performances. Perhaps this is just from my extensive scientific studies of SCTV and Spaceballs concluding that Moranis and John Candy together is generally a good thing. I bet there is also an alternate universe where Chevy passed the role off to Steve Martin and it was also much better.
Yes Rick Moranis or Or Martin Short. Even A straight comic actor like Tim Matheson. As much as I like Chevy's body of work, he ruined this. This is one of the top 10 movies I want to like, but don't. Kind of like Coen Bros "Hudsucker Proxy". A beautiful misfire.
I dont know man, I think since the character is a rich NY banker he's supposed to be at least a little bit unlikable, so Moranis wouldnt work inmho. Martin on the other hand would be great.
I agree. Rick Moranis or Steve Martin would have been better for the lead role of Chris Thorne. Despite Chevy Chase's reputation for being difficult he is great in some movies, Caddyshack, Vacation, Fletch and Funny Farm, but he didnt have his heart in this like he did in those previous films. I think one of those other two would have been a better choice. Still I like this movie for how ridiculous and over the top it is.
Polybius: I think if Jim Henson didn't die in 1990 then he should direct Nothing But Trouble, while Dan writes and stars in it with Chevy, John and Demi.

i still have it on VHS, my dad loved it. the crazy sets are what made it stand out. and john candy. Chevy Chase was the turd in the punchbowl. at some point he decided he was more important than everyone else and thats when his career started to tumble.
Same thing happened on the set of Community.

It's not the first time I've heard of CC being a bloated mean Git. It's a shame because like I wrote on here before I always liked him on screen. Perhaps calling the movie *Git* would have been apt with Chevy Chase's name above it.
Very well researched except for one detail: Bonfire of the Vanities was always intended as a Christmas 1990 release. In fact, if you read The Devil’s Candy: The Bonfire of the Vanities Goes to Hollywood, you’ll find that WB anticipated it to get Oscar nominations from it that year. However, I believe the original idea was that both movies would’ve been released during the 1990 holiday season before the recutting.
The one thing both movies do have in common is that their movie posters look almost the same. It’s brought up at the end of The Devil’s Candy.
I personally like the insanity of this movie and as I grew up with the movie with countless viewings on HBO (I remember their ad: “While on their way to Atlantic City, Chevy Chase just made a wrong turn...”), I never realized that it was supposed to be a horror comedy but then again I was only 6 when I first saw it. Now as an adult, I see what they were aiming for, which makes me appreciate it even more (I just wish they had stuck to the title of Valkenvania, which would’ve worked with the tagline they had. I bet it would’ve been “All they wanted was to get to Atlantic City. Where they ended up was...Valkenvania”). Still, by not using that Vallejo illustration, WB let one of the great pieces of art pass them by. I think it works way better and it might’ve made the movie a sleeper hit. Then again, maybe I’m just spitballing.
This production history (despite that one detail) is very well researched. I totally believe all of the stories. It all adds up.
I remember renting this film at nine years old from blockbuster and falling in love with it. I own it now. Going back and watching it as an adult, with an understanding of how films are made, you can see how much work went into the sets.
Aykroyd is famous as hell...but he is still very underated. After hearing all the back stories, one realizes how multitalented this guy is.
I knew it would only be a matter of time until someone covered this movie on here. This movie has a ton of behind the scenes madness according to the IMDB trivia section like for example there is a supposed teaser trailer or something like that where the cast are singing the film's theme to the theme song from the first Ghostbusters, also the backlot used for filming the movie was also the same one used behind the scenes of the box-office bomb Bonfire Of The Vanities (a billboard used for advertising the movie was replaced for a Nothing But Trouble billboard). There are very little publicity materials for this movie, I would definitely say that it's time they gave it a Blu-Ray release. I think Scream Factory would do a good job with this.
I am one of the "few" because this is one of my FAVOURITE movies I quote constantly!! I've always thought it was hilarious and now that I know there is an Aykroyd Cut I MUST SEE IT!!!!
Oh my god I must have seen this movie like a hundred times growing up. Such an underappreciated classic. It was such an odd but enjoyable movie and I can't believe I've forgotten about it. Thank you for reminding me of its existence and for the nostalgia.
I thought this was the most bizarre movie I ever saw, I loved it.
Aykroyd is both brilliant and totally insane, when you put his ideas in capable hands that can weed out the worst parts and clean it up into something people can digest the results are incredible, if you just let him run the show it's going to be an entertaining train wreck.

My dad was one of the few people to see this movie in theaters. He thought it was good and had no idea it flopped. He just assumed it wasn't that popular. I hope this movie gets a rerelease or even the directors cut Aykroyd made.

Dan Akroyd is a crazy person. I loved some of his movies, but this is truer to him than say, Ghostbusters. People had to nix a lot of his insane ideas in order to make that movie a hit

I ADORE Dan Aykroyd. It's a shame he couldn't do any more directing, because I think there should be more directors that allow this kind of creativity from the crew working under them. This wasn't a film made by a single auteur, herding the actors and crew like cattle for the sake of his vision, it was a passion project made by a village of talented people who were encouraged to be creative

I vaguely remember this movie cause I saw it as a kid and all I remember was Chevy Chase doing a cartoon exit at the end. Thanks GBF now I can get rewatch the movie.
I absolutely love this movie with all of its little gags and real life effects it is absolutely amazing. I think it has survived well as a cult classic and really do enjoy watching it even today and always love watching it
Seriously so underrated. The visuals alone are stunning and the cameos and what Dan Akroyd was able to do was insane. A full plate on this film is a huge understatement.

Okay, knowing the films history, it makes so much more sense to me now that this movie truly horrified me as a child when I watched it, but I also laughed a lot. Like movies that were straight up horror movies didn't usually scare me, but this movie did. Also, I honestly didn't know anything about all of this and it's so fascinating. Thank you for making this video. Now I need to dig up my DVD copy of it and give it another watch. It's been close to 25 years since I've seen it.

This could easily have been a Terry Gilliam movie: the story, the production design that's totally over the top...
BTW: Ackroyd firmly believes in the paranormal. He claims that he had paranormal experiences while he lived in a house that used to belong to Cass Eliot of the Mamas & the Papas. Two ghosts (Eliot and an unknown man) were supposedly active in the house. Those alleged experiences were a source of inspiration for Ghostbusters. He's also a UFO believer.
I hope the ghost BJ scene in Ghostbusters wasn't based on a real life experience, eww!. I thought just the same about Terry Gilliam. The special features on "Baron Munchausen" show some crazy goings on during that film.
There's a celebrity ghost stories episode with Beverly D'Angelo (I think it was her anyway) that has a story about Dan ackroyds house; apparently she bought it and ran into mama cass.

Chase was an asshole since the day he was born....if you look back at his life he was dick to everyone.

Haha nope I worked at Warner Bros for 10yrs, been on hundreds of sets, worked with many prodcers and directors. This movie has alot of history at WB, Dan is known to have a MAJOR ego! He demanded to be the writer but also the director and producer, actor and even had final cut approval, which is unheard of. He wanted conrrol over everything and didnt want anyone to tell him no! and for the most part no one did, and when someone did or warned him against an idea he balked at them, he even had 2 of my friends fired and thrown off set.

Chase was paid about three times more. Aykroyd was a producer, he was "paid" in profits from the film, which means he didn't receive any lump sum and whatever checks he may have gotten as director and producer (he acted for free) was far less than the amount he invested into the film.

But in the end everyone still did it without making the job more hard enough as it is. Most of the actors handle it like professionals and all the designers and crew had fun making the film. Their are times i wonder maybe aykroyd just couldn't say no to their crazy ideas and i don't blame him cause the sets and special effects are freaking amazing.
Great video! I saw this movie for the first time only a few years ago and I was baffled. I actually really liked it. It was like a nightmarish fever dream, but the passion of the filmmakers really came through.

It came out when I was about 11 or 12, and I thought it was one of THE CRAZIEST things I'd ever seen! I've got it on VHS (along with a few hundred other classics), and seeing this just makes me wanna watch it again tonight, since it's been some years since I've given it a go!
