The fact they couldn’t figure out how to bring Short Round back, even while Ke Huy Quan was enjoying a career resurrection, may be this production’s greatest sin.
It could've been amazing. It's like they wanted it to be mediocre. I liked the movie, but I feel like the final IJ movie could've been more of an epic send-off. Instead we have him and Marion in a depressing little NY apartment
There are so many ways that Short Round could have been in this movie and also explain where he's been this whole time. First, they can say that after "Temple of Doom", Indy took Short back to the States and told him to stay and get an education. That last adventure was a wake up call and thought taking a child all over the world like that is dangerous. Then we see adult Short Round as an archeology professor following in Dr. Jone's footsteps. Maybe he's Indy's assistant. This could have been him and Indy's one last adventure together with Short handling most of the action. Or maybe it's Indy's adventure but he needs to stop somewhere because he knows a guy, and that guy is Short Round somewhere in Hong Kong with his wife and kids. They are playing cards trying to cheat each other while Short's youngest is trying to pick pocket Indy. OR just a simple cameo at the end of the movie where he shows up with Marion and Mutt and HIS baby making Indy a grandpa.
The movie we should have had was "Indiana Jones and tomb of Genghis Khan", shot in Mongolia with Harrison Ford handing the hat to Ke Huy Quan, becoming the new Indiana Jones.
I will never stop being in sheer awe of how well River Pheonix captured Ford's "physical acting" style and line delivery. It was just PERFECT. That Pheonix family is a talent fountain.
This is quite possibly the best review I've seen on TH-cam. I'm so glad you mentioned the changes to the costume and the continuity errors, as those are things that always bother me and yet I rarely hear fans bring up those issues. Top-tier work.
DOD erased everything that ended CS with a happy ending! Just imagine if the movie had started out with an adult Short Round, who still wears his baseball cap AND who himself was now an archaeologist! He always saw Indy as a father figure and perhaps he felt inspired by him. He finds something mysterious and decides to seek out Indy after losing contact for the past 20 years. Indy is now head of the university and has become somewhat wealthy and famous after writing several books about his adventures over the years, which would have been later adapted into the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Him and Marion are thriving and Mutt has become much more mature with him and Indy on good terms now. Maybe he comes along for the ride? Anyway, Shorty and Indy have a very happy reunion and he manages to convince Indy into one last adventure after he privately confides to him that hes been thinking of retirement. Maybe Mutt becoming a father and his age be a motivator? They go on an adventure together and they have a touching moment in the middle. The movie ends with Indy's retirement and him taking his fedora off and putting it on Shorty's head, as a symbol of passing the torch to a younger generation. Similar to the beginning of The Last Crusade. NOW THAT would have been a trihumph! I would have loved it! It would have been so easy! What do you think?
I love that. It makes one wonder the thought process of Hollywood producers, surrounded by sycophants and yes-men, who green-light awful storylines. A round-table of real fans could effortlessly crank out a ton of better story treatments in minutes.
OK so the girl punches indy and he wakes up in his bed. So we're supposed to believe that she dragged him Inside a plane, out of a plane, in a cab and up the stairs with him unconscious the whole time? That's one hell of a punch. Meanwhile he gets punched a dozen of times throughout the movie, which does nothing exceptit just feels like elder abuse
Yes. Exactly. that is what we are supposed to believe. It would have made MORE sense if Indy awoke in an Italian hospital, while Marian (and Sallah) traveled overseas to be there with him. Everything else about the ending could have been the same.
Don't forget the time Mike said of smuggling him through Customs and across the Atlantic, plus finding, contacting, and convincing Marion to come back AND enough time for her to buy groceries...
Because it was simply an altered ending, and IF IT HAD TO be done this way in the last second before the release of the movie, they kinda did "the right thing", rather than leave Indy to die, and make him hand over the hat. There was clearly no way they would be able to return to that battlezone set when reshooting the ending so they did what a typical director in a hot bath would have done.
To play devil's advocate... maybe a reason he was out for so long may have also been the bullet wound and the blood loss from that? The "?" implying that it is simply a guess based on how poorly it was presented, rather than a "duh" kinda question mark... I'm not excusing it either, it seems far-fetched regardless and after watching a good chunk of this video during the premiere (needing to walk away a few times to do things), this movie is a hot mess that gives me a genuine headache.
I went to the theater. When the movie was over, there was silence. There was continued silence as everybody filed out of the theater. Sadly I had forgotten most of the movie as I left the parking lot. To me, Indy’s story ended when they road off into the sunset.
I used to believe the great tragedy of my life was seeing Harrison Ford grow old. In reality, the real tragedy is watching what my generation of film makers call 'entertainment'. This video was a joy to watch Michael and is truly a reflection of what a damn fine content creator you are. Without a doubt, your magnum opus. I tip my hat to you Sir.
I never understood Gen X directors. I'm a millenial but all the entertainment I like came before I was even born. It's really weird to me that someone would enjoy such a magnificent piece of media and, years later, decide to destroy with their own hands. It's sad and absurd.
I just now fully sat throughout this. Wow! Saying this is beyond impressive or comprehensive is an understatement! This’s the most fully, explained breakdown for a movie I have watched! Bravo, Michael! You truly put passion and effort into this, and should be proud of yourself!
The worst thing about this movie is that it's a time travel story with no motto whatsoever. They had the perfect ending RIGHT THERE. "Would you like to go back?" "No. I've already lived it".
@@OpenMawProductions Alright. It's not "the worst." But it's definitely representative of the laziness of the script and the absurd corporate games behind the scenes. No author would ever write a story about an elderly hero and a time travel device and then do NOTHING with any of it.
@@EddieHenderson92 It's better than the original ending where Young Indy gets shot by Volar which means Old Indy ceases to exist and after Hellana stops Volar, she then takes Indy's hat retroactively becoming Indiana Jones to preserve the timeline and effectively erasing Harrison Ford's character from history.
I'm only halfway through so far...Indy being fluent in many languages, and then not knowing German in Dial of Destiny is the ultimate take down! It is like they didn't watch any of the previous movies? Man that is bad!!!
I came out of this movie with an almost crushing sense of overall sadness which lingered for days, which I feel is the exact opposite of how an Indiana Jones film should feel
It took about six installments to get through this incredible piece and I can honestly say that it hits home far harder than the movie ever did. Truly spectacular work Michael. I wish that Hollywood had talent like you working as editors to make these beloved properties stick to their core values and apply that test throughout the writing, shooting, and editing process. Thank you for your effort and unique voice. Keep up the great work!
This is literally THE quintessential Retroblasting....MASTERPIECE.👏👏👏👏 Especially the last chapter of how just as Gen-X was pretty much the best thing that happened to these legacy characters and stories, in the end, Gen-X also turned out to be....the WORST thing to happen to legacy characters and franchises! It's like going back to "The Rot of Gen-X Filmmaking" video, everything Michael predicted even back then......has come to pass. And just as much as we blame certain directors, Gen-X CONSUMERS share much of the blame as well. When so many of our generation willingly and feverishly spent money on inferior corporate product......just to have their nostalgia sold back to them. Michael echoes my sentiments all but EXACTLY when I look back on virtually ALL of the legacy characters we grew up with as Gen-Xers: 'Goodbye. I wish things could've ended differently'.
I did not know that I needed to watch an in-depth dissection of the evolution of Indiana Jones' costume until this video. Now I wonder how I ever lived without it.
The ending hit me like a truck. Because I was one of those fans that always had faith that Harrison Ford did like Indy and that the franchise was this magic lovechild of Lucas, Spielberg and Ford. And the realization that it wasn’t really hit me. It’s sad but I’m glad I know the truth. Fantastic video Michael. You really outdid yourself. If only someone in the writing room for this movie had an ounce of the passion and love you have for Indy.
Your longtime interest in Indy, your film background, your journalistic background, and your experience with RetroBlasting have culminated in a compelling, informed, well-edited, epic review. Thank you for making this and sharing it.
Yes! It's like everything that is at the core of Michael's skills and observations....all came together brilliantly. I'm honestly a very casual Indiana Jones fan. But I have always appreciated how Michael is an Indiana Jones fan in the DEEPEST sense. When Michael said in the beginning that Indy inspired him to do everything from flying vintage aircraft to studying biblical history/archaeology?? How many 'fans' have taken THAT much passionate inspiration from Indiana Jones? I'll wait...
Freaking fan-indy-tastic! This has to be one the most amazing videos I ever watched on TH-cam.The attention to detail, the in depth analysis, the comparisons to previous movies. I loved every single bit of it. Cannot wait to see new videos in the same format!
This must be the best video i've ever sern on the internet. Ever. What a magnificient piece of work! Best review, best showcase of someone's true, endless passion i've ever seen. Thank you! These four hours went like blink of an eye!
Congratulations on this Michael, that was a amazing break down on Dr Jones. It's such a shame all these film characters from our youth have been dragged into our middle aged years and all been tarnished. At least we can still count on Kylie to still bring out some banging tunes in the 2020s!
I haven’t seen dial of destiny, and decided watching this four hour breakdown was most likely going to be a better use of time than watching the actual movie. You did not disappoint as this was a great video. I can’t believe the amount of work you put into this.
Brilliant video, the last chapter especially so. When I try to explain to people what made the movies we grew up on different, I usually end up citing one thing: sincerity. Sincere aspiration, sincere heroics, sincere sense of adventure, sincere sense of fulfillment, sincere sense of hope that things could be better. I think you put it so well in your final chapter.
Well said! Because it's so on point. Especially that last chapter can apply to almost EVERY legacy/franchise nowadays. There really is no true sincerity in most of 'entertainment' now.. Most of it really is just shallow and corporate "branding" of name recognition.
This "SuperThanks" is way past due. This is a PREMIUM video with premium effort on display and, as I have said many other places: This video is more entertaining and a better value that the actual Indy 5 film. It's a sin that it's not doing better, because it really should be.
The movie has many flaws, but I think nearly 4 hour analysis seems excessive. Surely he could've made his point in half that time or at least split it into a series of videos. The same could be said for many of his rants. He tends to get long winded.
This was almost therapeutical, thank god there's an actual Indiana Jones fan like you that truly cares to represent the feelings we all had towards this pile of shit. Love your videos
Well done. The state of movies today is depressing and this drives home that point. Movies no longer seem to be an escape but a shadowy reflection of anxious times.
Michael, very well said. This is a masterpiece. Thank you. It is disappointing when the core or the characters is lost and writers do not seem to know how to craft a great story, let alone a great story. I have not seen the new movie, because I could not stand to see what I have been hearing. But yet I am willing to watch this because you are always so thoughtful and fair in your criticisms. I agree with all of your closing points. Thank you!!! P.S. I am glad this was not a short. Long live the long form content.
Edit: to the stupid mouth breathers out there, the following comment is about the video/review and not the actual movie. This was a love letter to Indiana Jones if people cannot figure it out. The frustration, the disappointment, and the heartache can only happen when someone loves something so much.
There's always a handful of people that like crappy things. There's some real garbage that I like but I don't delude myself into saying it's great or it's an old or a love letter to blah blah blah. Crap is crap. This movie is crap. Its political, cultural ideology over art. They decimate the Indiana Jones character.
I remember an interview Ford did with Charlie Rose some years ago. He was lackluster and unexcited about what he did. It was then I knew that Harrison Ford didn’t really give a damn. Had a funny story about a woman offering him a job as a handyman though.
I've been waiting for this,it's the closest I'm ever going to get to watching the movie.Thank you, sir, for watching it so I don't have to,you have truly taken one for the team.
I remember Retroblasting saying in a previous video that you don't want to become a movie review channel but I do hope you make more videos like this one - in terms of the depth of analysis, not neccessarily length. Your love of and experience with the medium of film is very obvious, meaning you can produce a different type of video than most other full-time movie review channels make. (The fact you noticed that the dates written by a British character were not written in a British format is a perfect demonstration of that.) Cheers!!!
You and my husband and kindred spirits my husband grew up with Indiana Jones and went into the field of Archeology before his ending early and joining the military in 2005-15. He traveled all the way to his father’s nation of heritage South Africa and Joined the SANDF. My husband was in the boy scouts my husband was an Air Force brat and my husband speaks several languages. Today he is co-owner of a private security company and influences our son and daughter for adventure. I said it before i love your channel so does my husband we love how much detail you go into on things my husband grew up with and i have interests in today. Thank you for everything you and your group does to give many of us a window into things some of us never seen before. Thank you for everything Sincerely Mayumi Tsurugi Cromartie
Honestly watching this movie is like an experiement to see if a film can be developed to actively suck the enjoyment out of your day. Nothing in it had the same "Fire in the belly" so to speak. It was basically elderly Ford being cut a fat check to play role of a broken depressed Indy, being escorted through the story by other people while he just dodders around the screen, while the viewer is supposed to pretend like everything is great. For as messy as Crystal Skull was, at least it was trying to be a fun movie. It didn't spend it's time degrading the main hero and undermining him in his own story.
Damn! This made me cry at the end!!! Best thing I’ve ever seen on yt. Thank you Micheal and all of retro blasting!! I feel your pain of how Hollywood destroyed one of your beloved and cherished things in life. Something that gave you so many memories, and experiences.
Bar none the most epic dismantling of a movie ever. Absolutely taken apart scene by scene. Amazing, you put more work into your project than Disney and Lucas Film put in Indiana Jones.
Monumental work! A bitter ending for a beloved character but I guess we will always have Indy in our hearts the way we want to remember him. Sending love to the Retroblasting team!
This review left no stone unturned. Really incredible work. I may never watch this movie, but the review gave me chills at the end. Michael’s love of the character and legitimate disappointment and sadness about this ending for Indy really comes through. I hope people in the industry see this and learn some lessons. Given the box office flop you’d hope there would be some self reflection.
It's 3AM here, now. The last 3 minutes of this video, hurt. Deep. I understand - or at least I think I understand the dedication at the end. You are an artist and a brilliant human being, Mr. Michael French.
Brilliantly done. I am saddened that such an iconic character has been treated like a throw away cash cow, and that the the audience was seen just as expendable. Indiana Jones was the reason why I got a degree in anthropology and studied archeology. His love of adventure, history, and lore, made archeology seem electric and vibrant. All this movie did was put out the flame of hope, excitement, and curiosity that the character inspired and distilled in us. Thank you Michael for standing your ground and saying outl oud what we all have been thinking. Amazing work as always.
Michael, thank you so much for making this wonderful review! I believe Lucas, Ford, and Spielberg really cared about Indy... but as they each grew older, their perceptions changed, what they wanted out of life changed, and perhaps rabid fandom affected their goals and desires. Disney (currently) has the most money and is leading to charge with these careless mistakes and money losing efforts, and I do not think Hollywood will learn the lesson any time soon.
I get what this dude is saying, but now that i have sat through this entire crirtique i cannot believe he put so much effort into such trivial and mundane shit. More importantly, i cannot believe that i wasted so much time, but i kept thinking it was gonna get better.
That was an amazing deconstruction. Well done. You actually changed my opinion on story beats. I assumed Indy was the one who actually couldn’t get over the death of Mutt, and that sent him into a spiral. While he said Marion couldn’t get passed it, he would never admit to someone like Helena that it was actually him. As a viewer you have to take head-cannon leaps to get there and read into Fords performance. I think your take down is actually more on point and proves what a mess the film actually is. I was sad to see Indy end this way as well, especially when put the film in direct context to the other films and what the character truly does in them. Your point about what Star Wars, Raiders, & Superman’s impact on their time vs. where we are in cinema right now is right on point.
Worked like the blazes to get done with my online teaching so I could watch this in its entirety. Splendid work, Michael and Co., both on the film review and the historical background. This is the definitive critical video on Indy 5!
Dear Michael, thank you. In this video you've created the true love letter to Indy that Dial vehemently refused to be. Thank you for speaking for so many of us, giving us in turn a cathartic release to the stomach knot that is Dial, (and to a lesser extent was Skull). You do excellent work! Muchas gracias amigo, enhorabuena!
This is for the movie ticket I didn’t pay to see this movie knowing it was a crappy sendoff! You have made an amazing critique as well as a love letter to the Indy franchise! It was bittersweet watching this especially the sadness I felt at the very end knowing they missed the point! It’s a perspective that very few people could do or would take the time and passion to do! You laid out the cards and showed the receipts! They can get mad but after seeing the evidence they can only be mad at themselves! Thank you for the months of work, sweat, stress, time, and passion you put into this! My hope is that future writers and future owners of this franchise watch this and learn from this so that we and later generations can feel what we felt watching the original trilogy of Indiana Jones as well as create new ‘heroes’ with more compelling stories! To you, I tip my fedora! Well done!
Thank you for making this video-my longtime girlfriend and I broke up in September, and it was very depressing….listening to this video repeatedly has kept my mind off that whole situation and your observation and passion gave me something to smile about! You and Melinda rock!
As a boomer sitting on the East side of the pond my I say sir this review is absolutely blinkin' marvelous. Thank you so much for the work you put into it. I fully agree about those films from the late 70's and early 80's which took me from my late teens to my early 20's. Please keep up the excellent work.
Wow, this is your master piece!! As I suspect we are the same age, I really connected with the part about your attitude on Ford changing over the years due to interview after interview.
Great review! This is a masterpiece and you can really see the effort, work and critical thinking put into it. Which is definitely way more than the writing department at Disney could muster when they made Indy 5.
We went from Indiana fighting tanks on horseback to a lame tuk-tuk chase. We went from running from giant boulders and surviving the deadly trials of the grail to Indy splashing some water in a drain. Oh look its Antonio Banderas for some reason! Oh he's dead. And all of this cost $300m.
Michael, omg where to begin. As a long time subscriber and I admit( on and off patreon supporter) this is by far, your greatest masterpiece. Seriously, Michael this was a home run. This will be the video I will recommend to friends. A video I will most definitely watch again and again. We have TH-camrs who are lazy and make half ass vids and want only super chats. Then we have true creators like you who make content worthy of supporting. Sick, bro!
Critical Drinker alerted me to this phenomenal effort. Everything covered in measured detail. Have not and will not see this film, but this review should be mandatory for all those who ever loved the character and the tenacity and bite-life-on-the-arse vitality he once represented. RIP Indi.
Extremely kind comment. Thank you. Even more humbling to know Critical Drinker mentioned it. Was that on one of his livestreams? I'll make sure to thank him. - Michael
The best review. The fact that Harrison Ford was ok with doing this to the character makes me not want to collect anything related. And that they had Anthony Ingruber in the film and he was not even young Indiana was a waste of talent and time Thank you for watching this cause I did not have to. Your review made me want to sell all my Indiana Jones stuff cause if the actor or producers do not care about this character and create a story so horrible cause they don’t care about the fans, legacy or just good story why should I. RIP Indiana Jones.
It definitely ruins the allure when you find out Ford is a shallow miserable bastard. But recasting him is impossible until everyone who saw the original are all almost dead. Until then no more! The first 3 are the only movies to me. I can always rewatch them and still do.
This....this video/review right here is what you would call a masterpiece. All I can say now is thank you Michael and Retroblasting...and I am sorry that you had to watch this movie, because I wont.
1:24:29 I completely agree with you and I can take it even a step further of why the old man argument doesn’t work. No matter who the man, and especially him being a man of the world, him, being from the generation of gentleman. Men knew when to dress the occasion and put on a tie and show pride in himself. He definitely would’ve been in a dinner jacket at the least.
A needless movie, no-one wanted, no one expected to be good, and one of the biggest money losing flops of all time..... and look I didnt even mention Fleabag, OOPS!!
Helena is set up as such an untrustworthy and despicable character, the effort to set her up as a perspective hero and potential replacement to Indiana Jones is beyond bewildering. Also, you have Antonio Banderas in the movie and you kill him after a few minutes?! WTF!
Thanks for putting so much blood sweat and tears into this. I haven’t gotten around to wanting to watch this and it’ll probably be years before I do. I’m just honestly sick of phony cgi and the whole “ look how woke and enlightened we are “ Disney Hollywood culture. I agree with you, I like these in order of release, I LOVE TOD. I can’t believe indy uttered “ this isn’t an adventure “ in this movie ! WTF ?!
I really wished for you being involved in the production of indy 5 in some way as a writing consultant. Maybe we'd have had good closure to a character we've loved for most of our lives. Thank you for a great analysis, once again.
The writers of this travesty should be ashamed of themselves. They are writing at a 5th grade level. Unlimited resources, plot armor, cheap plot contrivances ARGH! It's all so awful. Michael, you really knocked it out the park with this analysis. I never had any intention of watching this trash so I really appreciate everything you've done here.
This is probably the ending he wanted to give to solo. And I really think Harrison Ford is an ungrateful bastard. And I’ll tell you why. The very character that he trashes and craps all over is the only reason he ever had the opportunity to play Indiana Jones. Had there been no solo there would have been no Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford should realize if he does not that solo is the one that made him. And he would think he would look back on that character with a lot more fun than the animosity that he seems to. What about solo that would have been none of the other movies that he’s ever done. More than likely he would have been a second or third list actor. He would not have been a leading man. Because remember by the time he did Star Wars he was in his 40s. In this very video, Michael does point out that most actors are put on the shelf at 40. It’s not right, but it is what it is. Then came along the part of solo. And that changed everything for Harrison Ford. Doors opened up, new opportunities came down the pike. He could choose from any script. He wanted to do pretty much. He did choose. He did Indiana Jones. He did the fugitive,Air Force One, and many other films. All of it comes back to Star Wars and the character of solo.
When has John Williams ever failed to deliver? I had too much crucial shit to deal with here that it took me FOUR HOURS and you're dropping a bitchy comment about one of the few basically non-emergencies with the film? Dude.... Time and place.... and you missed it.
One thing that bothers me in media that characters that are well past retirement age still continue to work. Jack Palance was still a cop in Cops and Robbersons, the Golden Girls buy a failing hotel in Golden Palace and Indy is still working as a professor. At least if he was a guest lecturer then it would be semi-retirement.
This is when you REALLY wish someone as passionate and knowledgeable as Michael would have done the movie. Would have saved money on digital effects and gotten one heck of a proper sendoff to such a beloved character. But at least we got this nice big umpy length review. Thank you Michael!
One silver lining of Dial of Destiny, whether you loved it or hated it, is that we got some Indy merchandise we wouldn't have had otherwise (even if it was less than we all hoped for).
This was a bad movie. And a bad Indy movie. Last Crusade has lots of issues for me, but it’s an entertaining film. Even Skull has some cool moments at least. This was a boring mess that damaged the Indy brand.
I'm much more excited for this review than the actual movie

Me too... I agree and damn that is so F-ing sad 😞
It's clear that a lot more thought and consideration went into this dissection than the movie itself.

Jesus, if you forgot the movie how do you know if it was good or not? lol
@@foghornfilms well if its a good movie, you wont be forgetting about it 10 mins after seeing it
I saw it opening night. There were 6 people in the theater.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Paul.
I never understood Gen X directors. I'm a millenial but all the entertainment I like came before I was even born. It's really weird to me that someone would enjoy such a magnificent piece of media and, years later, decide to destroy with their own hands. It's sad and absurd.
the GenX fans certainly have maintained higher standards of quality than the actual GenX filmmakers.
I am still waiting for Indiana Jones 4 to come out.
You would think after the success of 3 one would of come out by now.
That is definitely not the worst thing about this movie.
@@OpenMawProductions Alright. It's not "the worst." But it's definitely representative of the laziness of the script and the absurd corporate games behind the scenes. No author would ever write a story about an elderly hero and a time travel device and then do NOTHING with any of it.
@@Enriqueguiones That would've been a better ending but the movie was already lost at that point, and nothing was going to save it.
@@muigokublack6487was this ever confirmed or just a rumor?
I'm only halfway through so far...Indy being fluent in many languages, and then not knowing German in Dial of Destiny is the ultimate take down! It is like they didn't watch any of the previous movies? Man that is bad!!!
This is it. The ultimate RetroBlasting video. A true love letter to Indiana Jones. This is a masterpiece, unlike the source its taken from.
I agree & well said. Thus why I ask- 60K Views,,, an yet only 2.2K up-votes ??
C'mon People!
This was the BEST film review I have ever seen on TH-cam ever. No stone was left unturned in this remarkable critique. Congrats on a wonderful video!
Thanks for the kind words
"Reality Is Often Disappointing." - Thanos
Wow, thank you for the kind words!
Finished this masterclass in reviewing. Not going to lie that ending you had for this left me in tears and memories. Fantastic work as always.
Thank you so very much!
This is how you do a movie review. Wish more reviewers would be this informative and interesting.
The movie has many flaws, but I think nearly 4 hour analysis seems excessive. Surely he could've made his point in half that time or at least split it into a series of videos. The same could be said for many of his rants. He tends to get long winded.
This is usually what it takes to get people to notice why this was a bad movie in the first place
Wow. 4 hours. Superb. A documentary on Indiana Jones without peer.
This is unbelievable work. Entertaining, insightful, educational, and so much more all the way through. Clapping loudly.
Absolutely.
There's always a handful of people that like crappy things. There's some real garbage that I like but I don't delude myself into saying it's great or it's an old or a love letter to blah blah blah. Crap is crap. This movie is crap. Its political, cultural ideology over art. They decimate the Indiana Jones character.
@@WayneBraack k.
Wayne? Salvador was commenting on this review, not the movie.
Exactly, non of the 'consume the latest thing' brigade would ever be this bothered and motivated by anything
I cannot get over how well you pin pointed everything I was feeling! Thank you… a lot of time was put into this review. Really well done.
Thank you for everything

Excellent work man.
Something that bothered me a whole lot, was Indy not in his home we see in Raiders, Last Crusade and Crystal Skull. Kills me
Couldn’t afford the mortgage after the divorce lol
Honestly watching this movie is like an experiement to see if a film can be developed to actively suck the enjoyment out of your day. Nothing in it had the same "Fire in the belly" so to speak. It was basically elderly Ford being cut a fat check to play role of a broken depressed Indy, being escorted through the story by other people while he just dodders around the screen, while the viewer is supposed to pretend like everything is great.
For as messy as Crystal Skull was, at least it was trying to be a fun movie. It didn't spend it's time degrading the main hero and undermining him in his own story.
& whenever it DID degrade him it was on accident.
So you don't think this is all deliberate cultural vandalism?
It's 3AM here, now.
The last 3 minutes of this video, hurt.
Deep.
I understand - or at least I think I understand the dedication at the end.
You are an artist and a brilliant human being, Mr. Michael French.
Wait wait wait wait wait, you're telling me people don't like Temple of Doom? it's my favorite one!
Just finished watching 🙂
Mine too ! I think it was supposed to take place before the first one
They should have hired you as the consultant on this film
I can't fully express to anybody how excited I am for this review.
Very good, I was thinking getting an archeology degree back then because of Indy
At the very least, it's costing them money. And nothing talks better than a empty bank account. Voting with your wallet helps. They will listen.
A Retroblasting MasterClass. Thanks for the considerable effort to produce a work like this. The time flew by, watching & appreciating your analysis.
My pleasure!
Wow! What an amazingly thorough review of this cinematic travesty.
Michael this was incredibly awesome! Thank you!!!
Review was well worth the wait. Thank you for providing such great content.
I get what this dude is saying, but now that i have sat through this entire crirtique i cannot believe he put so much effort into such trivial and mundane shit. More importantly, i cannot believe that i wasted so much time, but i kept thinking it was gonna get better.
I had the same feelings about this comment, but you let me down, just like you did your mom.
An in-depth passionate review… wow.
I said to myself, "a four hour video, about a two hour movie?" No, no, no! Then I watched it. I was wrong. Great work!
Well done!
Damn.... Thanks so much Drew. I just welled up a little. - Michael
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better in my opinion.
Well of course. Spielberg directed it!😄
I just prefer to ignore DoD as being canon. Same as I do with TROS.
Your review was awesome.
Great review! This is a masterpiece and you can really see the effort, work and critical thinking put into it.
Which is definitely way more than the writing department at Disney could muster when they made Indy 5.
Excellent video. Thank you for giving voice to my heartbreak and frustration. Subbed.
1M views! Congratulations, Retoblasting! Well deserved. This video should be mandatory viewing in film classes.
- Michael
@@retroblasting Drinker posted the link on his FaceBook page with his recommendation.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is the one movie that means literally everything to me. ❤❤❤
I haven’t finished this video yet, but I really appreciate the entire section breaking down the Indiana Jones outfit through the movies.
WTF!
This is truly an incredible breakdown of this feeble attempt at a “movie”. Much more entertaining than the film itself! Thank you for this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m starting this at midnight PST. Been waiting for this and will watch it through! Thank you Micheal!!
$300,000,000?!?!?! That's insane. I'm glad I never actually watched this.
Wish I hadn't... 🤬😡🤬
Temple of Doom is my favourite Indie film. The most mysical of the 3. I was surprised when I knew a lot of people dislike it.
Michael: you did not mention anything about John Williams’ score. I wanted to hear your opining about it.
When has John Williams ever failed to deliver? I had too much crucial shit to deal with here that it took me FOUR HOURS and you're dropping a bitchy comment about one of the few basically non-emergencies with the film? Dude.... Time and place.... and you missed it.
Wow. You are so thoughtful. Thank you. May fortune and glory come your way.
An absolute BRILLIANT breakdown!!! Kudos Mr. French. Disney and Mangold should be ashamed
So... you *didn't* like it?
WOW, great job Michael, thank you so much for your hard graft...⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nailed it ... An incredible review by a person who cares deeply for the character.
What a review! Covering so many lapses but also really only wanting a better story for Indiana Jones. So thorough, truly enjoyed!
This is when you REALLY wish someone as passionate and knowledgeable as Michael would have done the movie. Would have saved money on digital effects and gotten one heck of a proper sendoff to such a beloved character. But at least we got this nice big umpy length review. Thank you Michael!
Wow now that was a fantastic watch, you covered so much and just nailed every point perfectly.
One silver lining of Dial of Destiny, whether you loved it or hated it, is that we got some Indy merchandise we wouldn't have had otherwise (even if it was less than we all hoped for).
There was very little in that merch range to get excited about. Most of it was weak effort garbage.
Incredible review! I know it took a lot of work to make this. Hope to see more of these style of videos from you!
This was a bad movie. And a bad Indy movie. Last Crusade has lots of issues for me, but it’s an entertaining film. Even Skull has some cool moments at least. This was a boring mess that damaged the Indy brand.
