Woodturning - Lidded Boxes

  • I turned these lidded boxes in separate pieces, with a inlay piece in the lid. This is a great way to use up scrap pieces around the shop. I used Maple and Walnut for this one. If you try this project be sure to let me know! I would love to see some pictures.

    Very good work! Great video, thanks so much and keep them coming! I am a 25 year, journeyman machinist, and dabble in wood projects between metal jobs. You are inspiring and make it look so much less daunting. I stumbled across your video after making magic wands for my kids. I turned some on my metal lathe and they came out great. Simple wands at first, then got hooked and now am up to 28 of them, some with acrylic inlay. I love wood projects so much more than metal! If you make a mistake, well, that is how it looks now! It's art, not a part! Thanks again!

    I'm new to turning and videos like these are really inspiring. If I can get a basic box figured out, something like this is next on the list!
    The hard part is going to be finding a 4x4 for the center part. I may have to just laminate a few smaller pieces.

    Hey Carl
    Your right, I think it was around 05 or earlier when WS left Kelowna. It was awhile after that the the work left Kelowna for the most part. I've heard thru the grapevine that the Mexico thing didn't work out that well and some or all of the part manufacturing is returning to Portland and Ive heard some of it is back in the Okanagan.
    Myself and one of the guys I used to work with at Crownwest left Kelowna in 06 and relocated to northern alberta to start our own steel fab company and it's going well. I've been watching your videos for about 18 months, since I started turning and I have learned a great deal from them as many others have I'm sure.
    Thank you
    Cheers

    Beautiful boxes Carl. Thank you for sharing. I love to turn boxes as well. Like the loose fit lid. I'm not a fan of the over tight ones. Ones that need a hero move to remove. I personally think it can sometimes spoil an otherwise beautifully crafted box. Ladies in the main I find love boxes but don't want to break their lovely nails trying to open them. I do think however that a good fit is very important.
    An insert lid can also turn a rather plain box into something special. They can however detract if poorly chosen. A coin stuck in a beautiful burl. Iv'e seen them.
    I like to put a couple of small grooves in the recess bottom before gluing in the insert. I do this to take up any excess glue preventing squeeze out, which can be unwanted and staining at times.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jim Robb Thank you very much Jim! I agree if the lid is to tight is just as bad as being to lose. I let them set in the house for a few day, and then adjust if I have too.

    A couple of questions. Are you mixing boiled linseed oil and wax? If so, what are the ratios? Also, are you dipping the sandpaper into a mix and doing 2 operations at the same time?

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sand with Howard bees wax and orange oil (it's pre-mixed) or Doctor's Walnut oil. It cuts down on the sanding dust, and puts the finish on at the same time.
