I really enjoy making these three piece lidded boxes, it's a great way to use up scrap wood in the shop too. I did some wood piecing on these lidded boxes after I turned them on the lathe. It's a great way to add some detail to a basic lidded box.
Thank you Carl for another great project. I thought the hole-making process would have taken a lot longer. I have an under-used Dremel which I must utilise more often. So far I've used it mainly for a little dental work which I do on the side to earn a few extra bucks - nothing too serious - just drilling our cavities etc. I'm glad you like Yorkshire Grit. I've been using it for about a month and it's one of the best additions to turning I've seen for a long time. Best wishes, Alan.
Thank you Alan! I was surprised too, it's fast and adds some nice detail. I may have to come see you I have a molar that's killing me...lol Take care, Carl
Great video Carl! I enjoyed your demonstration of piercing with a common dremel bit as it 'turned' out very nicely! Now to give it a try on a new box! Thanks again for all of your videos and sharing them with us! Safe turning always!
Carl another great job and great video. I hope you understand that he problem with watching your videos is that there is only so many hours in a day. My list of "hey I need to try that increases every time I watch one of these.
A lovely project, looks great Carl ! I finally managed to watch the whole video without being interrupted ! Yes Milliput would work very well with this technique . The Yorkshire Grit is also great for finishing Milliput . All the best, Jim
DO you do demos and hands own classes for wood turning clubs? I would like to recommend you to our club to come. Palmetto Wood Turners In Columbia SC. My email is scjwe59@gmail.com and what are your needs to come and availability through this year or 2017. Spence
Excellent work as we always expect from you now Carl. The piercings look great, yes only a few minutes to do but I suspect that the clean out every time after each application of polish etc. took a little longer. Great job.
Very nice box's Carl. I have done similar box's but used a wood burner with a pencil like tip to do the piercings with probably same outcome. You mentioned printing out some templates,, The possibilities are endless there on what a person could come up with. Some have mentioned lights inside, just drill holes of different sizes all way though. and maybe use a tea light. Awesome work! Love watching your vids!
This is awesome Carl , I'm going to try this one if you don't mind sir. I'm going to go with a little tea light in mine . Thanks for sharing , another great video mate . All the best Nick
Oh hey, I am also from Portland. :) I'm brand new in woodworking but I'm jumping in deep. Restoring an antique lathe bed onto a singer treadle. Going to try doing some old style turning! Love your videos. Hoping a lidded honey pot and dipper will be my first work after some practice spindles.
That's lovely. I understand your problem with trying to keep a random 'pattern'... see, I can't even type it. There's a lady called Yvonne Arlott who does lace-type piercing and she has to keep a pattern balanced around, say, the rim of a plate or the surface of an egg. She is extremely skillful. I don't see any videos on here but her website is well worth looking at. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Nice piece, and video. Really like all your work. Does the Dremel cutter burn the inside of the holes to make them black, or is that just an effect of shadows? If neither, how did you get the dark effect?
Thank you very much Tim! Yes the bet is burning inside of the holes. I'm going to do a more indepth video for the Q&A monday. th-cam.com/users/Thetuningshop
Cool idea Carl. Looks like a nice box to put some type of scented ingredients in. Or a electronic tea light would be cool. Take care my friend and do a kindness Mark
Fantastic video! Always enjoy your work and have made many of your projects - thanks. Will be ordering Yorkshire Grit later today. Curious about the use of the air grinder vs a standard dremel and I'm considering getting one or the other (or both). Is there a reason that the air grinder would be preferable in situations like this? Thanks!
Nice touch Carl. It's hard to tell on some of the boxes and lids if the piercing when all the way through. Did they? Have you tried to enhance the piercings with Milliput? Would probably be an even nicer touch.
Excellent video Carl, the box with the piercings looks really cool mate. Like you I find the ol' Yorkshire Grit is very impressive, if only it could reattach goblet bowls as well! ;) Take care my friend Mike
G'day Carl! I've been using U Beaut's EEE Shine for a while now with great results (I still sand to 1200grit...LOL!). Is that Yorkshire Grit a similar product? ie Tripoli particles? On a side note, love the wood piercing. Will give that a go in some future projects. The boxes look a treat mate. Well done. Glen
I like that piercing thing! I definitely need to try some of that soon! And i have been using the grit for a while. Its great! I will be using it in one of my upcoming videos too.
I really like the piercing patterns. Looks great. It doesn't look like they penetrate the walls. I'd like to see one done with...say 3 different sized drills in similar patterns to make a Potpourri pot. I lean towards functional pieces myself. All of the boxes came out great and nice video as well. "Like"
You should also try the matching Hampshire gloss. You won't go back best finished ever used and found don't lose it gloss like the shellawax or beeswax so quickly. Hampshire has won me for an awesome finish
Never been into piercings Carl but you've inspired me. ;- ) May have to get me some LOL Very cool video as always bud! With pipe rusticating the hardest part is to be totally random and fight the urge/natural instinct to do patterns.

Carl, you are the first American that I've ever heard say Yorkshire correctly. Thank you and great boxes
Thank you Tom :)
Glad i wasn't the only one who noticed :)
Great job, Carl! Thanks so much for including the speed you're turning at.

That piecing came out really clean! I wonder if a led tealight might make those into cool looking accent "candles"
You should try some YG Peter ;)
do the holes abit bigger Peter and colour epoxy them... make yourself a disco candle
Thank you Peter! I went through on the bigger holes it looks pretty cool. I like the epoxy idea too.
Great video Carl! I enjoyed your demonstration of piercing with a common dremel bit as it 'turned' out very nicely! Now to give it a try on a new box! Thanks again for all of your videos and sharing them with us! Safe turning always!
Thank you very much Kenn, I really appreciate that!

Excellent work as we always expect from you now Carl. The piercings look great, yes only a few minutes to do but I suspect that the clean out every time after each application of polish etc. took a little longer. Great job.

Curious about the use of the air grinder vs a standard dremel and I'm considering getting one or the other (or both). Is there a reason that the air grinder would be preferable in situations like this? Thanks!
Thank you Very much! I think a Dremel would work just fine, but this one is very comfortable for things like this.
Take care,
Carl
Nice boxes Carl, look Good with the holes. Keep up the good work Mate. Cheers Buddy. Desmond.
Thank you very much Desmond!
Take care,
Carl
Nice box and great idea with the piercing.

Nice touch Carl. It's hard to tell on some of the boxes and lids if the piercing when all the way through. Did they? Have you tried to enhance the piercings with Milliput? Would probably be an even nicer touch.
Thank you Tom!! The piercing did go all the way through on these boxes, but I have done that too. The Milliput really does add a nice touch.
Very cool boxes Carl!
Thank you Donny!
Nice.box, very well done. Is the Yorkshire grit the same as the EEE Ultra Shine?
Thank you Bill! It's kind of like it, but it breaks down as you use it. You can feel the grit getting finer as you work it in.
Excellent video Carl, the box with the piercings looks really cool mate.
Like you I find the ol' Yorkshire Grit is very impressive, if only it could reattach goblet bowls as well! ;)
Take care my friend
Mike
Thank you very much Mike! Ya, love the grit too :)

+Pipe Nutter Thank you very much Glen! I think it's similar, but the Yorkshire breaks down as you use it.
Take care,

Great video, Carl.I've got a bunch of plain wood and these boxes are great. You pierced them all the way through, right?
Thank you Rick! I pierced the large ones all the way through. Please share some pictures.

Thank you! Yes I'll be more of this :)
Nice work. I've not used a waste block with hot melt before. How do you separate fished piece from the waste block?
Thank you Shelly! A parting tool cuts right through it (like butter) I just part it off like anything else.
Looks great, that grit worked really well! 🤓
Thank you Lew!
Carl Really beautiful compliments
Thank you very much Giorgio!
Carl, please explain how you darkened the inside of the piercings so uniformly in the three part lidded box. Thanks, john
The bet is just burning as you drill the holes. I'll show a little more detail on the Follow-up My Q&A channel th-cam.com/users/Thetuningshop

Thank you very much Bram! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thank you Mitch! Right?! :)
Very nice. Another hit.
Thank you Christian!
Love the boxes carl all the best john (uk)
Thank you very much John!
lovely box Carl :) I love the piercing
Thank you Matt!!
Great video thanks. Which 2" Fostner bit do you recommend, one that can be re sharpened.
Thanks Jimmy! I use the Woodriver fostner bit. I think you can resharpen any bit though with a diamond sharpening card.
@@CarlJacobson Thanks Carl that's a great help,
Very cool ... thanks Carl

Thank you Glen! Oh ya big fan of piercing!...lol

Great Looking boxes. Thanks
Thank you Tim!
Carl, That piercing really adds to the look. Did you color the piercings in any way? They looked dark. Maybe it's just shadow.
Thanks, JimE
Hi Jim, the bit is going so fast it's burning them.
Carl I always learn something from your videos. Are you going to SWAT this year? I hope to meet you in person.
Thank you very much Joseph! I'm pretty sure I'll be at SWAT. I look forward to meeting you.
Unique looking, I like it
Thank you!
I really like the piercing patterns. Looks great. It doesn't look like they penetrate the walls. I'd like to see one done with...say 3 different sized drills in similar patterns to make a Potpourri pot. I lean towards functional pieces myself. All of the boxes came out great and nice video as well. "Like"
Thank you very much Gil! I went through on a few it makes a nice light too.
These are great. You could drop an electric tea light in there and use the piercings to create a nice back lit effect.
Thank you! Yes they would make great little lights too.
Very nice effect Carl
Thank you Mick!
A cute design!
Thank you Nathan!
Great looking boxes Carl, thanks for the shout and send me the bill... I'll spring for the new shirts ;)
Thank you Glyn! You're welcome, the grit works great I really like it. I'm an extra large.....lol

+Carl Jacobson XL ok I'm on it ;)
What was the tool that you used in this project for the patterning of the three lidded box?
astore.amazon.com/thewood0c-20/detail/B006SJJUU8
I really like the lids you did could you make it into a light that would make a neat pattern
Thank you Shannon! Yes if you go through it would make a nice little light.
Carl: What is the name of the rotary tool that you recommend and where do I purchase one? I don't see it on your Amazon page.
Hey Donald, I just added it to the store. This one is from Grizzly, astore.amazon.com/thewood0c-20/detail/B006SJJUU8
+Carl Jacobson Thanks so much Carl. I can hardly wait to try this out. I have a nice piece of Purple Heart to use for the base and top.
Cool! Please send some pictures :)
You should also try the matching Hampshire gloss. You won't go back best finished ever used and found don't lose it gloss like the shellawax or beeswax so quickly. Hampshire has won me for an awesome finish
Yes I've been using it for a while, and it works great!!
Interesting... don't think I've ever pierced before hollowing before.
You ever try a dental drill for piercing Carl?
I haven't tried a dental drill yet, but I'm looking into getting one.
Great job! Were do u get your sandpaper
Thank you Luke! I get it from Klingspor, but here's a starter pack. astore.amazon.com/thewood0c-20/detail/B004NID36I
They are Amazing
Thank you very much Chase!
Great video. Think I'll try some micro-boxes. i.e. 1.5 X 1.5 inches.
Thank you William! Share some pictures, I'd love to see them.
Never been into piercings Carl but you've inspired me. ;- ) May have to get me some LOL Very cool video as always bud!
With pipe rusticating the hardest part is to be totally random and fight the urge/natural instinct to do patterns.
Thank you Tim! It really is easy, and it adds some nice detail.
Take care,
Carl
Excellent Excellent Very Good carl
Thank you very much Hamada!
Carl mate to do that is the maple body part like a tube is it and you turn a top and bottom is that correct?

Thank you very much Paul! That's great, absolutely you can use any of my videos. I love to see some pictures of the class too if you want to share.

Is Yorkshire grit similar to EEE?
It's kind of like it, but it breaks down as you use it. You can feel the grit getting finer as you work it in.
