Hi Phil! This is what I'd call a "nuts & bolts" video. You showed us how you find the middle of a blank, how you sharpen your tools and how you tell if the bowl is deep enough. Then on top of all that info you turned a beauty of a bowl! You must be getting tired of people telling you how wonderful you are!! (LOL!) But I'm going to tell you regardless! You're an inspiration, Sir! Please keep 'em coming! While you continue to put videos out, we'll continue to watch them!
Beautiful bowl Ed. The colors came out better than I expected. I want you to know how much I appreciate your telling us which tool you are using. That is one thing that makes your videos so good. Thank you.
Thank you Joseph! I can't remember who I saw do it, but the idea is to use a diamond file in between the grinder. I tend to use the file until I file down to the small bevel left by the grinding wheel. Just extends the life of the gouge. Welcome to the channel! Have a blessed day! - Ed
Thank you very much! That is one of the things I really like in the original picture I found on Pinterest. I pray that you and Tom are safe and healthy! - Ed
Thank you Mike! I used the Cole Jaws to hold it. It's a great way to reverse chuck it, but you have to be mindful of your cuts and keep the lathe speed lower than 600 RPM. I've had a couple of bowls go flying so be careful! - Ed
Absolutely beautiful!! I can't believe you don't have more viewers. Please keep doing what you are doing!! I will definitely let others know about your channel!!
Thank you very much Shaun! I'd love to see your creation when you do. Please consider sharing it on my website by using the "Submit Your Project" link so I can share it with everyone. Have a blessed day! - Ed
Very nice hollow form and shape. BTW after the sanding sealer if you use the the gold/yellow pad instead of the green it will leave a better finish. Geoff
I have many questions. What is the type (size) of the bowl gauge you used at 12:53? What is the type of the wood at 13:36? What is the type of the lathe? :) Thank you for your answers in advance!
Thank you Billy! I got your sticker and will give you a shout out in the next video. No new lathe on the horizon, but I am getting a bigger bandsaw in the next couple of weeks. Woodcraft is having a great sale on the Rikon 14" bandsaw (13" resaw and 1.5 hp). I'll finally be able to breakdown all of these logs Take care brother! - Ed
Beautiful! One question: I have a couple of different swan neck hollowers. I find them unusable because they catch and chatter so much! How do you prevent them from catching? Any tips? Thanks!
Thank you! That's a great question and wish I had an answer. I struggle with that same thing. I just made some carbide tools out of 1/2" bar stock to help eliminate chatter. They won't be good for hollowing. I've seen others use a hollowing system that is fixed to a point. I wonder if that can help? Please let me know if you come across something that helps. - Ed
Thank you Noel! I think a tall finial would also look very good. I'll try that on the next one so stay tuned. I hope that you and your family are safe and healthy! - Ed
Really nice box. Well thought out, I enjoyed the turning process. Some turners are downright boring to watch, but I stuck with you till the end. Does the wax finish still shine like it did when you made the piece, or has it sunk a bit? Oh yeah, what timber is the box body made from? Keep well, regards from Scotland.
Thank you John! It is in my office where I get to see it every day. The wax finish has dulled a bit to a beautiful medium luster. The lid is made from Lacewood and the finial African Blackwood. The body is made from a spalted species that I can't remember right now, but it's either Hackberry or Maple. Have a blessed day! - Ed
I watched the whole video to see how you reverse chuck, but you skipped over such an important stage. please be aware that beginners may come across your channel and watch it, so you need to go into and show the basics.

Great show. I did not understand how you chucked up the bowl to remove the tenon.
Thank you Mike! I used the Cole Jaws to hold it. It's a great way to reverse chuck it, but you have to be mindful of your cuts and keep the lathe speed lower than 600 RPM. I've had a couple of bowls go flying so be careful! - Ed

How did you get the point in the final out
I hand sanded it off camera. It was not very large and only took a few minutes. - Ed
Nice job. Would like to see a tall finial instead of the stubby.
Thank you Noel! I think a tall finial would also look very good. I'll try that on the next one so stay tuned. I hope that you and your family are safe and healthy! - Ed

Nice project. It really isn't a "hollow form" but should be called a "closed form."
👍👍👍👍
