    Beautiful little box Mike. Glad to see you let the look of the wood stand on its own rather than adding embellishments. Thanks for sharing my friend. Fred

    That's a stunner of a box Mike so Mu should be well pleased with it. Brendan and I are in the same wood turning club. He's great company with a healthy sense of humour. He needs one when he sees my entries to the competitions.
    Best wishes,
    Alan.

    Thanks for the shout-out Mike. You did a great job on that because figure like that doesn't need a complicated profile on the box. There will be more Yew soon. I just need to dig it out of a shed. I nearly fell off my chair when you said "four years ago"!
    Best wishes, Brendan.

    Yew is one of my favourite woods. I remember I was once in a pub with a fellow wood lover discussing the woods we particularly like. My telling him that "I love yew" just happened to coincide with a momentary lull in the general buzz of conversation. That drew a few looks. Never finished a pint so quick in my life before!

    Beautiful, Mike. There are two yew species native to North America, but both are quite small and "shrubby." The English yew is occasionally used as an ornamental, but is quite uncommon. Wish it were otherwise! Your yew is really beautiful.

    Nice box Mike. For tidying up the ends on these small boxes I use a 2" Record geared chuck with pin jaws fitted. It works very well and is very reliable. I confess to being a bit of a wimp about jam chucks after the Killer Lathe kept pelting me with high speed timber! I've also been using Glenn Teagle's excellent 9mm hollower which is a cracking tool. Keep the videos coming.

    • @MikeWaldt
      @MikeWaldt  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Graham, and thanks for the tip mate.
      I too have pin jaws, and use them quite a lot for doing the base clean up. But, felt for this video I'd use a jam chuck, as newer turners most probably don't have a set of pin jaws.
      Thanks for watching my friend.

    Mike, what a terrific little box, I would love to try and get some here in Aus and have a go with a similar project. You've done your usual brilliant job, you need to tell "er in doors" that she is a lucky woman. I tell mine often but I don't think she believes me, keepemcoming.

    With Yew, one of the slowest growing and closest grained of native trees, that piece could have 70 or 80 summers of growth preserved in its rings - a gift of a lifetime!

    Very interesting Mike ! Yew is to me the by far most beautiful wood in western Europe , mine comes from Brittany and I have plenty of it , of any shape , so I like to see how other people turn it : the recesses at both ends are cylindrical and short so I feared , the wood would soon fly off but then I saw the jaws of the chuck : cylindrical and threaded , holding the wood firmly , even when you were hollowing one half with a shaping gouge , against the grain , back and forth actually ...the jaws of my chuck are just beveled and not so much to trust..that "Yorkshire grit " is a wonderful stuff , thanks for all !

      Do you have any advice on how long I should let my piece of yew dry before I turn it? With boxes, can you turn it wet? My yew is a piece that's about 24 inches long, and about as wide as a coffee cup at it's biggest point. Got it at a wood auction from my local club. Long term member said she can't wait to see what I do with it.....NO PRESSURE!!!! ;-).
