Took a couple of days before I could see this one Carl. Always like when you turn a box. And I agree with everybody else that is a stunning piece of wood.
Stunning piece of wood there. I can't help but admire your skill with a skew chisel, it is one tool I really do struggle to get any decent result with at all. Lots more practice needed methinks. Great video as ever Carl, thanks for sharing.
You learn something new every day! Thanks so much. Really appreciate all the work you put into producing a thorough and well-thought-out video. Great learning tools. Thanks again.
As a guy who works with olive wood on a regular basis, I have to say that you did an excellent job with your first turn. It is normally very hard to get used to be oddly figured and unpredictable. People burn tons of this stuff as firewood in Greece, very sad. I understand why you used Walnut oil, but might I suggest using a good quality olive oil on it next time. It will bring out the aroma and natural golden color of the olive wood, while not over-glossing it, you won't be disappointed!
Great video and turning Carl as always Carl! I've never turned Olive before, now I'm anxious to try it as your turning is beautiful! Where I used to live, they used olive wood as 'firewood'...what a shame! It's soooo beautiful and looks like it would be fun to turn. Thanks so much for your video and as always, as a newbie, I learn something new each time! Safe turning to you always!
Beautiful piece of timber Carl, great looking box for sure,I'm just learning and the woodturners club i am in i'm up to making a box so i'm in the progress of making a squattier lidded box for my wife Jackie to keep her sewing pins in out of Camphor Laural...I always look forward to your videos mate.. cheers Mick!!!
aw yeaaah!! Olive's the BEST! soooo hard though, and reeeaaaly reeeally prone to cracking. i tend to baste my olive wood pieces in olive oil for maybe 4-5 coats (overkill, i know), i dont think it protects them too much, but ads a nice colour to them.
Hi Remy, I didn't forget :) I've had some family things going on for the past month and having a hard time keeping up. I'll get it done soon. Take care, Carl
I sell some of my projects, give some as gifts, keep some for myself. Olive wood is great to turn, but is a very hard wood. I sharpened my tools right before I made the box.
Lovely box Carl. I like Olive Wood and it makes beautiful pens but they need to be fairly thick pens to show the wood off i.e. not slimlines. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Olive wood turns great. I'm a blind wood turner from North Carolina. If you could be more narrative on your videos, it would be greatly appreciated. The blind wood turner Ken
Beautiful box! Great camera work. Do film with two cameras running all the time? It is good to see what you are doing from two different angles. Thanks... Cip
Thank you Ron, I think there's a faster way to get you some :) I liked the walnut oil but it gums up the sandpaper a little more than the mineral oil. Maybe not the best for sanding.
Carl, I just love the olive wood - the "the spirit of it", the colours - but as it is - I don't have it - yet. PS. And I like how you use your tool's too :-)
Just found this video as I was searching lidded boxes. Love this one in olive wood. I l do like making these lidded boxes, I may even do a TH-cam video once I've had some more practice 😀.
Nice box! Love the smell and grain of the olive wood very much. It's just hard to get hold of a larger piece. As for sanding inside boxes, I use a rubber matt about 8mm thick. Still soft in bending so I wrap my sand paper around. Litte finger twists here.
Hi Carl! Beautiful box. Just a share; I have a straight and a curved set of forseps that I use, at times, when sanding the inside of a vessel. Usually smaller ones that might twist my finger off. Take care, Dave
Hmm.. Olive wood & Walnut oil. Did you by chance consider garnishing with some feta cheese or perhaps topping with a nice raspberry vinaigrette? Excellent work as always Carl.
beautiful piece carl the olive wood really turns well and the figuring on it was amazing,im not sure about the walnut oil though im a shiny freak(personal choice ) lol lol, great vid as usual carl will be patiently waiting for the next vid.....dougie.....

Thank you Mike, it is a pleasure to turn nice clean cuts and very hard.

Nice project Carl. Great looking piece of olive wood. The olive wood I've turned always had a nice aroma.
I bought some Italian olive wood cutting boards at Target in Bend Or last month and have been cutting them up for pen blanks. The wood is gorgeous.
Thank you Kurre, I normally use paste wax and mineral oil. You can put other oil or wax finishes over it.
Thanks Matt, I use Robert Sorby tools. Rockler and Woodcraft both have online stores.
Hi Carl, this wood is Manifique, very pretty box, bravo.

Beautiful box out of some amazing wood.
Yes a Forstner bit works great for getting rid of the majority of the wood. I don't think it makes a cleaner cut though.
Nice job Carl:
I think the skews are out to get us this week!!
Well done
Larry

Thank you Bob Click on "show more" under the video, and the links will be highlighted in blue.
Great job. As always :)
And, Please Carl, what is the "your secret mixture" when you sand it all?
And can one use after that as the shellac, linseed oil etc?
Would you be willing to do a video of turning a wall clock? Also one on maybe how to sharpen your tools...? That would be awesome!
