“Not everyone was built to work full time and also do all the other things around it”… man, I never heard anyone saying this before and this might be the sentence that will change my life for the better (after two proper burnouts)…

I'm glad that resonated with you Judit. I wanted to include it in the video, because of how much it helped me when someone else said that to me a while ago. It's so important to talk about these things, I feel. There's already way more than enough content out there about being 'productive'. We need to talk about our real experiences too, I think :) And I truly believe this to be true. Take good care!

I found it extremely gratifying to hear someone acknowledge this, too! I have never been able to maintain a full-time job for more than a year without sacrificing my health and mental wellbeing, either, but always assumed part-time work was only feasible for folk living with full-time-employed partners. Exploring jobs that can be worked part-time whilst maintaining a liveable single income has been a game changer for me, and I'm planning on retraining in the new year. Psychotherapists, physios, personal trainers, tutors, freelance editors, occupational therapists... there are so many job roles out there which don't rely on the typical 9-5. I hope you found something, J GRG!

@@elizabethsydnor5247 true.. I always just felt pressured to work full time because it’s what everyone else does. When I realized I can just spend my money more carefully and give up certain things that weren’t really necessary or good for me anyway like living on my own, buying a house, going on out of town vacations etc. instead of working so hard to live up to everyone’s expectations of what a “normal” adult should be able to do I felt so much better. I do realize I have a lot of privilege other people don’t though and want to work to make the working world a healthier place for less privileged people.

I work in a high school kitchen preparing and serving breakfast and lunch. My best time is on the register and I get to talk and know the kids, and being older I treat them like my own kids. It’s amazing that the few short seconds or minutes help me make a difference. One student told me right before graduating, “Thanks for being a good friend to me the last four years!” That brought a tear to my eye! Now when my days are stressful and that’s a lot anymore, I look forward to seeing “my kids” at lunch and it helps me get through my day! I even get kids ask me to not retire until after they graduate, even a teacher asked me the same thing.

Here in the states they do not recognize "burn out" as a medical problem. Take a day and you will be better. I believe most people here in the states do have burn out trying to meet corporate demands. I do listen to my body and I do try to take steps to correct problems, but it is difficult to do sometimes with all of the expectations that are placed upon us. Thank you Vera for another wonderful video! ☮️🌍🌲🤗

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts Jennie. Yes, unfortunately burnout isn't recognized properly everywhere.. I wish that was different. It's better here in the Netherlands, but even here there are a lot of misconceptions about it in my experience. This makes it all the more important that we do our best to take care of ourselves whenever we can, I think. Have a wonderful day!

I went through something very similar and was diagnosed by my psychiatrist as having a mental breakdown. I view it like a very big earthquake because I have had smaller “aftershocks “ since then. I experienced a tunnel of despair and am learning what I need to do to breach the tunnel. I don’t know if others have felt this way, just my experience.
Love and prayers for everyone experiencing anything like these.

This resonates with me soooo much. Feeling more fragile, feeling that I might never recover and stay broken for a long time, or just feeling lost during the recovery period, feeling angry at those people who caused it. But recovery is happening, time is the ultimate healer, if we cooperate and don't deliberately sabotage the process.

This is such an important video! Your last point about not having to make productivity a main feature of your life if you don't want to, gave me goosebumps because it is so true and not something that is heard often enough. I haven't had a burnout, but I do live with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which adds a lot of stress and anxiety to life so it is really important for me to find a balance between productivity and rest. Your points about when and when not to push yourself are fantastic and something I'm still learning in large part thanks to all your videos. I'm much better now at accepting what a friend of mine calls 'nope days', those days when pushing yourself doesn't help and it is better to just let go and take it easier.
I love that you pointed out that balance is rooted in listening and understanding your mind and body's responses to the changing situations life presents us with. It doesn't mean a constant and unchanging state of balance but more the ability to manoeuvre healthily between productivity and rest/self care in the same way that mindfulness doesn't mean a constant and unchanging awareness of the present moment but more the process of returning to that awareness each time the mind is inevitably distracted.

    • @SimpleHappyZen

I'm in the middle of a medical burnout. I've been told to use a walker when ever I need to move around. This comes on the heels of 11 falls in a month. During that time I couldn't mentally and physically clean my house. My mother refuses to come visit me. Or voluntary call me. I have no friends to come visit and I'm sitting here all alone. There are issues related to my moving around the apartment building that keep me stuck in myj apartment alone. I can't sit in the lobby and patio furniture. I can't get up and stand up because the furniture and the other tenants won't help if I get stuck. So for safety I have to stay alone in my apartment. I am getting angry and depressed. Nobody wants to at least come and spend any time with me. And I just get more upset so I just feel abandoned and cry. Nobody cares about me. I have been abandoned. That's my life.

Thank you. I needed this video to remind me of how far I have come. I think the thing I forget the most is that my capacity for stress is so much lower now. I used to thrive on the corporate energy. Even after taking time out to focus on my mental health, and consciously taking a step back in my job once I did get back to work; I find that stress at work drains me very quickly indeed. For a long time I have been judging myself by the standards old me was able to set and I find myself slipping back into the old mindsets but without the stamina. I’ve also just lost a very close friend and her very sudden passing (as well as losing my brother not that long ago) has reminded me that age is a gift not afforded to all of us. Time to reset and recharge ❤️

I would love to see a follow-up video to this about *how* you check in with yourself and listen to yourself. It's easy to say, "listen to your body", but actually putting that into practice is more difficult (at least for me). I can tell when I'm tired or need to pee, of course, but a video that actually addresses *how* to listen to your body would be great.

Hi there! First of all, there was a weird reply from someone to your comment, which I deleted per my comment policy. :) Second, thanks for your question! I've been thinking about it, and it's hard for me to explain just exactly how to do it. How to listen to your body. It's just something I do haha. The first step is being able to tell how you're feeling, which is I think the most difficult one. But you said you already do that, so that's great. It takes being mindful enough to step out of your thinking mind and into the present reality. Then second, acting on it. If you need something that can be done now, try not to postpone it and instead acting on it as soon as possible. If it's not something that can be done now, I try to think of how and when I could act on it today, tomorrow or as soon as possible. Like if I feel like things are going too fast and I need a break to recharge, maybe I'll try and make some time for it this weekend. Hope that makes sense :)

Not everyone is built to work full-time or have side jobs/incomes. I have to admit that since the pandemic I have given up on cable but become way too into TH-cam. I find myself feeling less than because so many on here have multiple stream's of income and all I have is my one income from a non profit organization I've been working for since 2014. I have to remind myself that everyone is different and I have no one to impress but myself. I love having my weekends off doing nothing but seeping-in and trying to become more minimal in my 358sq foot studio. I have to remind myself of these things you say in your video's so I don't get distracted and fall apart trying to be so perfect.

Also, with the side hustle things, I feel like they can be wonderful if that's what you want, but no one should feel pressured to monetize their hobbies or interests or to create side hustles if that's not what feels right for you. Hustling is not how I want to live my life haha :)

Well done you for talking about your burn-out so openly - that is so important these days. Many countries still attach a massive negative stigma to being burnt-out and it's important to remove that so people can actually feel safe enough to admit that they're on the edge and can't no more. Thank you for this!
One thing I wondered was in what way you feel more fragile now, and if you see the burn-out as a negative thing? To me personally it was like a 'wake up call' - amongst other things that happened (which led to it...), but it taught me a completely different way of seeing life, living life and taking care of myself. I don't feel 'broken' now but am mindful on when things get bad and try to stir against it then because I am aware of the consequences. In a way, I see the experience as a thing I really needed in order to make my life better - in the long run, hopefully. But maybe the awareness that you can get back into it is the feeling that makes you feel 'fragile' or broken, perhaps you're not but you're just aware of it more?

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Well said, loved everything you shared! :) Yes, I definitely also see it as a wake up call. The only downside I still experience is the 'fear' (for a lack of a better word) to fall back into it, when I'm not feeling my best for a couple of weeks in a row.

Great video Vera! I really resonate with your thoughts on busyness - I used to think I "shouldn't" have burnt out, as others seem to do more than I do (used to). And even after quitting work, I got caught up thinking I "had" to be working in my garden, or doing housework etc ... but it's only since I've been resting more and making my focus nothing more than a daily walk and making nutritious food for myself, that I've started to feel healthier. I still have limited energy, and zero inclination in returning to work (I'm not sure if I'm taking a career break or early retirement!) ... and I might never get back to 100% ...but that's ok, because now I am able to enjoy simple things again (like watching the birds in my garden) and that is enough :)

I REALLY liked your point that a constant balance is not possible because we and our life is in constant change - I LOVE THAT! This is a really important point for me as I have been chasing and wishing for finding a "balance" for years. I guess the most important thing is to every day find the best balance for the current situation and to be okay with the fact that a good balance is not always possible, but that you can focus on doing the best you can with what you have and to trust in that it is all changing :) Thanks Vera!!💖 PS: Congrats on your channel soon being 5 years old - your are doing a great and important work! Maybe you could make a 5-years anniversary video where you talk about the journey and what you have learned? 😀🤗

Take the time to laugh at the little things and be kind to yourself, whatever you do. do it so that you know
it is the best it can be within reason and resources. It may seem a funny thing to day but if doubt and negative thoughts plague you when life is tough mentally tell them to bugger off and get on with the task at hand, sometimes you have to stamp on those thoughts and be tough on yourself to achieve the more tricky things in life. That enables you to achieve more than you realize and in doing so you grow as a person.
Thankyou Vera for having the courage and conviction to share and help through your own experiences x

They tried to put me on antidepressants to resolve my crushing fatigue after all tests came back negative. Nope. Instead I took years to learn and work on exercising, diet, more sunshine, better sleep, naps and letting go of control aka less work. Today I'm fine, and now realize health is a choice and more I can keep myself healthy and happy but I had a lot to learn . Thanks for sharing your story.

I had a big burnout from career right before the pandemic, and isolation really helped me recover. However, I moved across the country in 2021, and then moved across the country again a few months ago to be with family members who are in need of help. I feel myself hanging on by a thread, and know that I'm close to another burnout due to both the business and emotional weight of it all. I feel nervous because I'm trying to prevent it, even though it feels impossible to do so. Thank you for this video, Vera. Thank you Vera i feel as though i need to rest and this video has come at the right time for me. I hit burn out too about 20 years ago and then an injury finished me off, but although i dont think i have recovered it did teach me alot, like learning about my limitations and no longer apologising for them, you cannot have it all, and less is more, i know gratitude has helped me its not a state of mind but some times a state of the heart. Learning about being a sensitive person and leaning more about being introvert has set my mind straight and i do love what you said

I suffer from depression. I can go a while without an episode. This time, I had been physically ill. I went back to work. I knew I was less patient than normal. After googling, self care ideas, I came across an article about burnout. I had most of the symptoms. Depression is part of it, but there was so much more. I took more time off from work. Finally, I am feeling healthy, unstuck, and at peace! Thank you for sharing your ideas about what worked for you. After going through the lock down and the covid related stress, I just needed to rest. I think that mental health is being discussed more with less of a stigma, but there is still a long ways to go.

What I would advise is to try and take it one day at a time, and not worry too much about it. Getting used to a new job and a new routine takes time, it's like that for everyone. :) So just take it one day at a time, and go from there :) Good luck!

Thank you very much Vera for your videos. You help many people I'm sure 💞
This video is very important for each one, because you talk about our relationship to productivity, the burnout, boreout, that issues are important for many of us. You said something that "not everyone is build to work full time" and it has particularly resonated within me❤
I never know what to do with myself, what kind of job fit to me, because I'm not very productive, I don't like pace workplaced with pressure. And if I like some things outside, like videogames, reading books of philosophy, also passionate by history, listen to metal music, I never been creative with an innate talent like a musicians or a drawer. Plus, I'm very shy and I lack of self-confidence, even if I sincerely would like change in ma life, at 38 yo. Sometimes I feel worthless, in a very demanding world.
Sometimes, I envy people who have a passion from very young and who affirm "I always knew what to do in my life since very young and now I'm in the perfect place"...Those people are rare, and I'm very happy for them and always encourage each one to do what make them happy🙏
You know this video arrived timely. Many of your relevant advices sincerely inspired me, and I want to make them in practice. Vera, you're an angel, I wish you success for your channel and to continue living in harmony with yourself❤🙏💞

Hi Vera 🌸 I often listen to you, when I can't calm down. Your voice and your topics are spot on 🙏
I have been stressed for about 14 years.
For a year ago, I was diagnosed with "the silent" ADHD.
I have not been able to work, since spring 2018.
I hope that I recover some day.
This year I'm finding quiet time, for sure: I have left my husband - we are still good friends. My husband has our youngest daughter from sunday to friday. And I have our daughter in the weekends.
My oldest daughter, has just started her year, in 'efterskole' - a school where she sleeps with her classmates.
It's some though decicions I have made for now. But I have to recover, so I can be that person and mom, I need to be, for my self and my daughters

I also got to a place feeling like I’ll never have the capacity to do what I used to, to work full time, to live a full life - like I just don’t have the stamina or energy to live a full life. But I’m FINALLY starting to think that maybe I can fully recover; maybe I can get back to working full time. I’m finally starting to feel like I’m coming out the other side of the burnout. (I still have days, and sometimes weeks, where I kinda fall back into it-2 steps forward 1 step back-but I’m getting there slowly)

This was excellent, Vera! Something that crossed my mind is that for many of us, we need to redefine or even define for the first time what productivity is for ourselves. What does is look like? Have I bought into someone else's definition of productivity, or even society's general definition of productivity? It's so hard for us to figure out what it even means for us. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts Susanne. I think it's such a shame that burnout and sensitivity aren't always taken seriously... Even more reason to take care of ourselves as best as we can :) Sending lots of love back!

Balance is in fact maintenance and just daily practice... Thank you for this video! I am struggling with handling ME/CFS and practicing pacing. What a challenge. Self love helps though.
Best wishes to you! I love your channel!
