Hi everyone! Please know that it's not about doing this perfectly. I'm for sure not making the healthy choices 100% of the time. 😅 Life is about balance and that goes for healthy habits too. So feel free to see this as a list of suggestions, and pick the ones that appeal to you. Enjoy! 🤗🍵
Also, thank you all so much for your suggestions about the sunscreen! I ended up trying out the Altruist SPF50 face fluid that so many of you recommended and I love it!! Definitely keeping that one.

      Hello Vera 😊,
You asked for a good sunscreen recommendation, and I can’t recommend the one from Ringana highly enough! I discovered their products a few years ago when I was striving for a healthier lifestyle and wanted to eliminate all chemicals from my skincare routine. Since then, I’ve been absolutely loyal to them.
Ringana products are unique because they are Fresh Cosmetics - made without anything your body doesn’t need and only fresh ingredients - which means they even have an expiry date since they’re freshly made just for you. They’re not only great for your skin but also for the environment, and of course, they’re vegan too!
If you’d like more info, feel free to reach out to me. As I am amazed by the brand and values, I’ve recently partnered with them, so I can offer you a €20 voucher if you’d like to give them a try. 😉
      Sending hugs from Germany!
      Marion

I can say cooking double is definitely a game changer. It’s so nice to not have to plan so many meals and then the effort of cooking everyday is also a huge weight off my shoulders.

I don't "cook double" but I naturally have more than one meal's worth, and I eat the rest of it for the next meal or over the next few days. I can't really save it for long term because it's gone in a few days. So a head or half a head of lettuce makes several meals' worth of salad. I cut three or four russet potatoes into thirds to fill the pan and roast them, and eat a couple chunks per meal.

For #8… I absolutely used to be the person who would think “if I fall asleep now I’ll get X amount of sleep” etc. The number one thing that helped me was getting rid of the clock in our bedroom. I check the time on my phone before I go to sleep and then that’s it for the night. I put my phone on silent and place it face down on my bedside table. I don’t allow myself to check it at all until the alarm goes off in the morning or I’m getting up anyway. It’s done wonders for my sleep especially if I wake up during the night. No more counting the hours.

I stopped suffering from low energy, constant fatigue, constipation, anemia, skin breakouts, and so much more… Now I’m trying to lower my added sugar intake and less oil. Also, as a yoga teacher, I’m glad you included meditation and breathing - so important 🙏🏼☺️

Going for a walk, especially after dinner helps with digestion and relaxation. Also, in the past four months, I've started journaling especially about an hour before going to bed. I call "brain-dumping". Whatever comes to mind, even if it seems silly. I think of it as giving my mind a cleansing.
Paula's Choice suncreens and Beauty of Josean are light weight yet moisturising. I only use cruelty-free products. 🐰

Seeds: I have been putting two tablespoons of flax seed meal in my morning oatmeal for years. Turns out, 40 g of flaxseed meal a day is a natural night sweat treatment. When I went through menopause, I did not have near the negative side effects of my other friends and, although I am not a nutritionist, I believe it is because of the daily flax seed meal for the 10 to 12 years prior.

Hi, I was in a similar situation the recent months and found micro or tiny habits to be a game changer for me. I'm often not in the mood or "don't have time" to go for a 45 min run or do a 20 min workout. Instead I now opt for doing 30 s planks and push ups and call it a workout. Better than nothing and oftentimes I will continue working out because I already started. And if not, that's also okay because I already did something 😊 highly recommend a channel called "Better than yesterday" or similar, for their micro habit video. Good luck and you rock, girl! ❤

I used to need a glass or two of wine in order to fall asleep. I depending on this for a good 6 years. Stopping was one of the most difficult changes I’ve ever had to make (even more difficult than quitting smoking actually) I tried quitting both drinking & smoking at the same time, I was a non smoker for 6 months before I finally put down the bottle. It took probably 3 weeks but eventually my sleep quality improved so much abstaining from alcohol. The staying up late habit still have not broken. I can’t fall asleep before midnight no matter what I do. Even when I have to wake up at 430 am for work. Best wishes 🩵

The latest healthy thing I have been delving into is wearing foot shaped shoes and wearing toe spacers.
There are many health benefits to having our toes in correct alignment.
I wear shoes that are called Barefoot Minimalist. That means there is no lift in the heel ( zero drop) so then the rest of the body/ joints can be in correct alignment. Also, that the shoes are foot shaped so our toes can be in the correct anatomical position while walking. Healthy feet !

SLEEP: Incorporating some Ayurvedic self-care practices before bed has improved my sleep habits by about 95%. Now instead of it being normal to have issues sleeping, it only happens on rare occasions.
Self oil massage (abhyanga) followed by a warm shower or bath each night before bed. I add a few drops of a grounding essential oil to my sesame oil and gently warm the oil glass in hot water before applying. Once a week I also wash my hair, oiling my scalp and hair before my body.
And then right before bed I massage oil with lavender essential oil on to my feet and put on organic cotton socks. If it's too warm in the house at night, my socks usually don't stay on long, but that's ok.
This is besides the other normal things like no screens after 8pm, low lights, quiet house, etc. I also am very careful about what kind of book I read before bed.

Vera, the best sunscreen I have found is by a Polish brand - pHDoctor (made by a dermatologist). It's called SUNSET AR Day face cream with SPF 50+. I use it as make up because skin looks so great. It isn't greasy (I always look sweaty with other sunscreens on), reduces redness, and it is just fantastic. They ship around Europe, but not to USA, unfortunately. It is on an expensive side for me, but so worth it since it improves skin.

Yay to magnesium! Make sure that it is magnesium CITRATE, and NOT CARBONATE. Some companies either change their formula or use carbonate, which is not easily absorbed and is far inferior. A tip is to use magnesium maleate and take with something acidic like orange or cranberry juice which helps the body absorb it better. The vagus nerve stimulation is awesome too 😊 Yeah Vera! ❤❤❤❤

Thank you for your healthy tips! I like taking Epsom salt baths. In the morning sweeping and raking leaves is a good start in the morning. I like playing music when I have my shower. I love having foot reflexology.I turn into bed early for rest and sleep. Healthy prep and meals for sure cooking home cooked for for family. I have cut down on meats and meals portions. I snack more on nuts and fruits. I have cut down on sugar and salt as well as confectionery. Somehow Korean dramas have helped to release emotions. I have light dinner of matcha oat drink. I do a lot of gardening that makes me feel a lot better overall. Greatly appreciate all your tips to stay focused on self-care and for well being. Breathing in the garden smells good. I should start pelvic exercises. Accept your body and look . Just don't compare with perfect celebrity beauty. Accept inner beauty. I do cook more portions to keep extras in freezer to reheat. I have electrode mat for feet massages. Meditation and being still comes easy for me. I have cut out distractions and it brings me more clarity for what is important for me. I think I have learnt to be more content with my life and not compare my life with others. I have to accept that I have more limitations but that does not mean I cannot lead a very good life just because I cannot be physically very active. I am just more careful after brain surgery. To each their own. It is alright to let go of friends who cannot understand one's own preferences. It is sometimes better for you to let go of those friends and feel less pressurized to try to fit in where you do not fit anymore. That is another journey of your life with changing circumstances. Life goes on.....Que sera sera. Alhamdulillah keep counting your daily blessings 🤲🙏

Vera, please make a whole video on walking. When I was younger, I walked 3 miles a day. 1 1/2 miles away from home, then turned around and walked 1 1/2 miles back home. I walked uphill going away and downhill coming back. After 1 year I had lost exactly 100 lbs. I was obviously overweight when I started but so much healthier when I finished. I wish I would have never stopped because now, years later, I have gained the weight back and I can’t get started again. So, yes, please make a whole video on walking and all of the beautiful benefits of walking.

And my nightmares stop. The most difficult? Get offline and try to not be in front of the computer all day. I try to take some short breaks and leave the office and I lucky because I work in a big campus, so there are a lot of green and trees, so I can recharge myself there. Love your videos. Hi Vera. Great video as always and good to see you. Thank you for the reminder to eat until you’re 80% full. I tend to mindlessly eat everything on my plate. I’ll try starting with a smaller portion and I can always get seconds if I’m still hungry. (Eating mindfully would also help me a great deal) 😊
Something that’s been working really well for my back and mental health, is using the Pomodoro Method for my work day. That’s where you work for 25 min and take a 5 min break, then repeat. The break is so short that it doesn’t interrupt my flow, and I find that I can get lots of little things done during the day on those breaks. I work from home, so there are a lot of options for what to do in those 5 min.

One healthy habit I'm very proud of is flossing every evening before brushing my teeth: No more bleeding gums when the dentist pricks them 😄
And during the cold seasons I try to rinse my nose with warm salt water at least once a day (nasal douche). Since I started doing that a few years ago I barely got any rhinitis despite catching a couple of respiratory viruses.

One thing that might also help your foot cramps, which I also have trouble with from time to time, is a simple stretching exercise for your feet. Stand on the edge of a stair for instance and rise on your toes and then slowly lower your heel downward as far down as is comfortable. Doing this a few times late in the day usually eliminates those pesky cramps. I had them even though I eat a very strict wfpb diet with lots of greens, which should be giving me lots of magnesium.

Many years ago, my podiatrist gave me "homework" for leg/feet cramps. You make the alphabet gently with each foot. Afterwards, do 5-10 mins of gentle stretching. Though it's been years, I still do this every morning since it's gentle and only takes a few mins.

Loads of super helpful ideas in this video, I know I could do with incorporating several more of those. Your suggestion about falling asleep was something that was really helpful for me a few months ago when I had a small bout of insomnia. I will absolutely try that arms behind back posture exercise, as I feel that will be a real benefit. For me one self-care habit that I have is a daily bath. I believe that a warm bath has a variety of benefits including lowering blood pressure, but I have one just because I love them so much and find them super relaxing.

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ah thanks Chris, I'm still very self conscious about my Spanish hahaha. The difficult thing mostly is that every time I try to think of a word or phrase in Spanish, it comes in Japanese. And I really have to strain to think of the Spanish word, even though I know it and wouldn't have any issue with understanding it if someone else says it. I guess that's the downside of studying two languages at once lol.
Also love the daily bath! And hope the posture trick will be helpful for you too :)

As for daily sunscreen: I use one from bioderma for sensitive skin SPF50, it’s hydrating, there’s a clear version and a tinted version that can serve as light foundation (I use the clear one). I love it, it’s not greasy at all, leaves a very nice hydrating feeling on the skin. It’s not cruelty free certified because the brand uses at times animal products such as propolis, but it’s not animal tested.

I never wanted to have a career in Arts, I wanted to be an English teacher, but art was always a part of my life as a kind of therapeutic moment. I stitch, draw, paint, embroider and even make my own books to draw and paint. If you don't mind chemical sunscreens, Paula's Choice Resist Daily Hydrating Fluid Face Moisturizer SPF 50 is insanely good. Non greasy, your face feels instantly clean even after immediately applying it. The only downside is it really burns your eyes if it gets into them. I remember I would apply, I believe it was one of her mineral based sunscreens, around the eye area that didn't burn at all.
UNFORTUNATELY I stopped wearing sunscreen because I'm rarely outdoors and don't tan. When people warn you can get sun damage through windows, they weren't joking.

I have recently changed my nutrition and I feel so much better. I used to snack through lunch rather than having a proper meal and then didn't want to cook dinner. I felt awful. Just getting off the couch was painful - how can I feel this old at 41?
I decided from now on to have three nutritious balanced meals a day. Lots of plants, lots of fiber, fruits and vegetables. I have found myself snacking way less in between meals. And I feel like five years younger after less than a month. I have not restricted anything from my diet, it's just naturally improved so much from my three balanced meals. If I want a second helping, some chips with my soup or extra butter or something, I have them. I don't really fuss about the details. I finish the night with a cup of hot tea and a square of dark chocolate and then no more eating after that.
I place a special emphasis on plants in my diet. Last year I stopped eating beef as part of a harm reduction strategy. I have since cut out pork and we're down to poultry only. My goal right now is cooking only one meat meal a week. I am moving toward a flexitarian diet as I am taking the Buddhist precepts next year. I am a bit concerned about full vegan because my husband is allergic to soy and I always seem to struggle with my health when I cut out meat completely. But I'm trying!
A final thing I did which has had an amazing impact is I created little fruit and vegetable magnets for my fridge to track what produce is in there, along with dry erase magnets to write down leftovers and the day they were made. I now have a quick visual of what produce is in my fridge. If it's something that needs to be eaten soon, it goes at the top. If it's something we ran out of, it goes on the bottom. Since I started doing this I've been eating more fruits and vegetables because it's so easy to tell what's in there, and we haven't had any produce going to waste. Between that and snacking less, our grocery bills have gone down considerably.
Reading is also my thing. ❤

Cramps antidote: My mom gets charley horses (leg cramps) and find that mustard works the best to dissipate them. She's also had some luck with pickle juice (especially the non-vinegar kind). That's just the juice in a pickle jar, or a few companies sell the juice alone.
