How does this channel only have 15k subscribers? Criminal. As a beginner with crippling anxiety for just setting pen to paper your videos have quickened my confidence. Solid, practical advise and a diverse pool of instruction and inspiration. Loose, relaxed sketching ftw. Because of you I finally said screw it and started scribbling on a post it at work. Cheers and thanks!

That anxiety is the biggest barrier to becoming the artist you want to be. I don't know what it is with art that we think we should just be able to do it without the thousands of hours of work that is actually required, but so many of us battle with it.
I think, when we're kids, we all draw at the same level so it's fun and we can show our drawings to each other and we're super supportive. But at some point, our friend keeps drawing but we do other things. When we come back to drawing, our friend's level has increased where ours hasn't and we're ashamed or our work. We lose sight of the fact that our friend has put in the hours and we haven't and then it's no longer fun for us.
For me, I just decided that my sketchbook is a private space, no one needs to see it and that I will just draw and try to recapture that joy of drawing. I approach each sketch as an experiment now, and just draw for the fun of it, in the knowledge that each drawing is teaching me something and that the more I do, the better I will get.
Drawing is for you. Have fun with it.

Thing is you do have talent. You were belittled because you didn't fit into the teachers idea of 'normal'. It is clear the teacher had inner demons they were dealing with and shared them with you. You have talent, use it, enjoy it and don't ever let someone steal your joy.

I’ve struggled for years to understand watercolor. It’s a mystery to me how to finish a piece that seems unfit for the eye. Ugly for short. You’ve helped me understand what I’m supposed to be accomplishing with color. I can draw but the second color hits the page I’ve ruined a nice piece. The simplicity of each step relaxed my overwhelming fear of making a mistake. I’m grateful I found your calm touch and unraveled a piece of this mysterious art. I love watercolor, but I go about painting like it was a chess game. Thank you. I’m going to look for more of your teachings.

Thanks for the introduction to watercolour sketching. I haven‘t sketched or painted for over 40 years but it was something I loved as a student. Your approach inspires confidence to just have a go with minimal financial outlay. I was really pleased to see you working from a photo, my initial approach has been to take multiple photos of my subject, digital photography makes this really easy. I can then put the image on my ipad or laptop and sketch it from there. With experience I may be less self conscious about street sketching 😅. Thanks again and good luck to all those equally inspired. ❤

They make those books 270 etc, because it’s a sketchbook and you may want to actually sketch something then pop some WC in. That means you’ll likely be using a pencil, pens, or watercolor pencils / pastels / colored pencils, etc. You may not want the paper to “eat” the tips of your sketching tools. So, the paper is somewhat smoother.
Imho, 300 + is made with a view to brushes; painting … not so much doodling and the likes.
Btw, this is the first sketch I did along with you after I found your channel. It is also the very first sketch in my first WC sketchbook. I was that pumped after watching & listening to your instructions. Just do it , have fun … and it came out great 😊

About " muddy colors" - i usually add lighter colors or white to whatever I am mixing. water color is so forgiving since it can be washed / shaped in many ways . like he mentions just stay loose- or play with mixing and you will find the way that you like. also keep a journal what have you mixed - hope it helps.

Hello, this morning I discovered your Urban sketching for beginners and I really liked it. I subscribed and happy to follow you.
I am 70 years old and I dream of learning to make a sketchbook. Thanks to your video I think that all hope is allowed to me.
I do watercolor landscapes but I have trouble drawing urban spaces. Thanks for this video. From Toulouse France

I use a whiskey flask for water and a collapsible cup. They both slide into a bag. The flask never leaks. Won’t crush. And I love Moleskine books!

Whisky flask is a great idea, flat as well making it easy to stash I imagine!

Oh Im in heaven. I love this style, I've been battling with the perfectionist TH-cams that leave me blocked with feelings of inadequacy, this way I can begin and flow and find my way while doing it. thank you so much.

This is fantastic - thank you! Great overview, technique and I love the fact that you point out that minimal supplies can produce great results. I've been trying to find the most portable set of supplies I can but for some reason still thought I needed to have a whole bunch of brushes. I love the idea of just one.
