How does this channel only have 15k subscribers? Criminal. As a beginner with crippling anxiety for just setting pen to paper your videos have quickened my confidence. Solid, practical advise and a diverse pool of instruction and inspiration. Loose, relaxed sketching ftw. Because of you I finally said screw it and started scribbling on a post it at work. Cheers and thanks!
Honestly it is criminal, this channel is a daily reminder to just get in and have a go!
Absolutely awesome to read this, thank you :) Hopefully i'll keep growing :)
Thank you too @biggammin for the support :)
That anxiety is the biggest barrier to becoming the artist you want to be. I don't know what it is with art that we think we should just be able to do it without the thousands of hours of work that is actually required, but so many of us battle with it.
I think, when we're kids, we all draw at the same level so it's fun and we can show our drawings to each other and we're super supportive. But at some point, our friend keeps drawing but we do other things. When we come back to drawing, our friend's level has increased where ours hasn't and we're ashamed or our work. We lose sight of the fact that our friend has put in the hours and we haven't and then it's no longer fun for us.
For me, I just decided that my sketchbook is a private space, no one needs to see it and that I will just draw and try to recapture that joy of drawing. I approach each sketch as an experiment now, and just draw for the fun of it, in the knowledge that each drawing is teaching me something and that the more I do, the better I will get.
Drawing is for you. Have fun with it.
You described myself! That really hit home for me, thank you!
In school I was told I have no talent for painting and drawing and so I didn't enjoy it. But recently, due to starting a junk journal I tried some things. THIS VIDEO makes me want to sketch our city immediately! So clear and doable! Thank you!
Brill, please do and have fun!
I'm so glad for you, have fun!!
Thing is you do have talent. You were belittled because you didn't fit into the teachers idea of 'normal'. It is clear the teacher had inner demons they were dealing with and shared them with you. You have talent, use it, enjoy it and don't ever let someone steal your joy.
never done watercolour dine other types of art at all, I did see an amazing guy making a beautiful painting in water colour in the park last week so i am now here thanks for the clear explaination.
I’d like to thank you for introducing me to your style of Art… I’m over 80 & this is my first time using watercolour & line drawings
Love your kindness & encouragement… please keep up the amazing videos
Best regards R Bailey 👋
Delighted to hear :)
Hi, I have wanted to try this for the longest time, but was never brave enough to commit. After watching your video I am going to have a go. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and knowledge.
I love your lose style, it's given me a new way of seeing art. I no longer feel as though I have to have every line correct. You are unique.
I live in a small town in the U.S. with a lot of historic buildings. I've been wanting to get out and paint some things around town. Couldn't have found this at a better time! Going to try this in the morning, weather permitting. Rains a lot here.
I’ve struggled for years to understand watercolor. It’s a mystery to me how to finish a piece that seems unfit for the eye. Ugly for short. You’ve helped me understand what I’m supposed to be accomplishing with color. I can draw but the second color hits the page I’ve ruined a nice piece. The simplicity of each step relaxed my overwhelming fear of making a mistake. I’m grateful I found your calm touch and unraveled a piece of this mysterious art. I love watercolor, but I go about painting like it was a chess game. Thank you. I’m going to look for more of your teachings.
Wonderful to hear 😊
If this attitude was more in this world, we would definitely be more happy! This is not only for drawing or creative processes, I think learning this gentle and loose approach to life is so on point. Drawing would be a practice for that. Appreciations. Thank you💙
No worries 😁
A wonderful tutorial. Thanks!
I wish I could speak english in a way to thank you how much you deserve. This is The best lesson ive seen on TH-cam. Simple, straight to the point and fun. Thank you so much for sharing this. Regards from Brazil!
Jean you're so kind!
Toby, what a terrific video! Thanks. FYI, IKEA sells a dish cloth for 69 US cents that works great for watercolor. I bought a pile of them and save on using paper towel/kitchen roll. I wash them up and reuse them.
Great idea!! I think we have that cloth as our normal kitchen cloth so I'm might even steal that for a trial ;)
This has been such a gift of knowledge for a new person's first attempt in this media. So lovely
and it is so crucial to break our mind from the barrier of good supplies and always feeling there is something not ready for painting, the fact is anytime we can and should do it.
Did my first ever urban sketch pen and water colour this week and sold it! Thank you for all your wonderful advice, I could watch and listen to you all day long! Thank you
Haha epic! Congratulations that must be a great feeling 😊
I have an essential tremor, so straight lines are impossible. I feel good about my future with watercolour and sketches. Thank you so much. I love your style and encouragement
No worries ☺️
Perhaps the condition known as essential tremor can enliven ones art as one has to accept a lack of precision. I have the condition.
Toby, this is one of your best teaching videos. Totally love it. Thanks a bunch.
Glad you think so!
I struggle a lot with perfectionism and hence haven’t picked up any hobby in years. Started to look into urban sketching yesterday and so so glad to have found you through this video. I’m so inspired to create something of my own no matter how amateur or messy. Thank you, tons. 🩷
Awesome to hear, please do!
More likes and comments would cause the algorithm to send this excellent channel out to more people.
Hehe I'm on board if you are ;) Thanks for the support :)
My first urban sketch ever! I loved this tutorial. I thought there is no way I could learn to do this and I am so proud now that I have done it. Thank you so much for your tutorials.
Ahh briliant to hear - thanks Sandra!
Love it
Thanks Toby, just completed my first urban sketch. I'm so proud of it! 😁
Fantastic!
Thanks for the introduction to watercolour sketching. I haven‘t sketched or painted for over 40 years but it was something I loved as a student. Your approach inspires confidence to just have a go with minimal financial outlay. I was really pleased to see you working from a photo, my initial approach has been to take multiple photos of my subject, digital photography makes this really easy. I can then put the image on my ipad or laptop and sketch it from there. With experience I may be less self conscious about street sketching 😅. Thanks again and good luck to all those equally inspired. ❤
My pleasure :)
This is a great place to start, it can be overwhelming starting out and seeing so much perfection. This is a great way to just get brush to paper and learn how your paint dries, and a little composition. Thank You!
My pleasure
I absolutely love. I've always been afraid of sketching....but not any longer! Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much! The real time footage and the way you show how to just stick to four colors taught me a lot.
Awesome to hear :)
Wonderful guidance - yet my anxiety ramped up incredibly - LOL!! Will come back to this again and again. Thank you for sharing your approach!
No worries 🙂 and good luck ☺️
Thank you so much for this video! I feel like I just had a therapy session while watching you and the way you talk about it, it totally applies to life! It relaxed me sooo much! Thank you, thank you!
My pleasure
Wow thank you! You just unlock something in me. Sketching and drawing was a struggle and a pain in my ... Until now. The perfection and the need of accuracy was so in my way I had no fun at all it was a struggle to practice this skills because it was so frustrating. You bring my fun back and set me loose! I already see progress in my skills it's like something click in my brain and a weight is off my shoulder!
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart❤
Brilliant to hear!!
“I’m not doing paint by numbers” 😂 amazing video .. this is going to be my first urban sketch, thank you for this!
Thank you so very mush. This tutorial made so much sense to me and I feel confident to go ahead and do some urban sketches from photos I took on a trip.
That was so cool. I LOVE urban sketching
Thanks
It's a lovely, useful 21 minute video. Thank you
You’re welcome 😊
I love your style and the way you break down your process. But most of all I love your encouragement! Thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad! I just want more people sketching!
been doing urban sketching, not a pro - urban sketcher, got a lot of flaws, and, this video really is helping me a lot to understand how others-like you - do "that" its soooo great! amazing, this content popped up on the suggested videos.
Brill, really glad it helped a little!
Worked along with you doing the shopfront. Not entirely happy with my result but it's certainly an improvement on past efforts. Thank you.
Hi, Toby!
You made me laugh so hard when you said (and I`m paraphrasing): "Don`t be afraid because this really looks like nothing.", and "Now we`re taking out the heavy guns."
I love loose sketches, and I would really like to learn how to paint them.
This was fun, very informative, and inspiring.
Thank you very much!
Greetings from Slovenia :)
Haha glad to give you a giggle 🤭
@@TobySketchLoose
Giggle? No, no, no.
I wasn`t exaggerating!
Your remarks surprised me, and I really was laughing out loud :)))
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I ADORE this method! I'm just starting to try watercolor. Usually quite frustrated, not happy with result. But I think I could actually DO this!!! Thank you so much!!
You can do it!
Thank you Tony. I now have the paper, travel paints and brushes and pens. Next is to meet with friends at a Botanic Gardens near to us and work out what I want to sketch. This has given me a bit more confidence to make that happen.
New subbie also.
Have fun! And thanks 🙏
Wow! That was a wild ride and I can hardly wait to do a sketch in my village … thank you so much ❤
My pleasure 😊
I’ve watched many watercolour videos on YT but I always come back here. In trying to find my ‘style’ I know now this loose way is mine. This is a lovely little watercolour and I really do love the style. Thank you. 😃👍
I'm so glad!
Thank you so so much for detailing the process! Merci!
You are so welcome!
As a beginner, I did this pic and so happy with my result! Thanku for a great tutorial, so relaxed and informative too.
I love how you explained the coloring part, the whole video is very clear and lovely. Thank you!
Thank you :)
I was feeling so uninspired about my painting and how to get back into it until I did this and I just want to say thanks this was super fun and enjoyable. I’ll keep trying more stuff like this .
That's awesome to hear!
I truly enjoyed following your process for this sketching. It was a pleasure to see the spontaneity coupled with a true image . Thank you. I am going to sketch like this…. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
this is so so helpful Toby, thank you.Your classes at Skillshare and here have been a guiding hand for me through a scary process of letting go and learn to sketch and pain losely. Thanks a million!
This was a fantastic tutorial. The best part of it is your constant pep talk and reminding us to not try to strive for perfection, which I think a lot of beginners struggle with! I’ll give messiness and randomness a go!
Really enjoyed this sketching and water color painting lesson. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I watched so many videos, maybe too many. But you just made starting to actually paint something more approachable. Thank you for the video. ❤
Absolutley no problem, I'm glad it was helpful!
So lovely! Thank You so much! Your voice is so peaceful❤
They make those books 270 etc, because it’s a sketchbook and you may want to actually sketch something then pop some WC in. That means you’ll likely be using a pencil, pens, or watercolor pencils / pastels / colored pencils, etc. You may not want the paper to “eat” the tips of your sketching tools. So, the paper is somewhat smoother.
Imho, 300 + is made with a view to brushes; painting … not so much doodling and the likes.
Btw, this is the first sketch I did along with you after I found your channel. It is also the very first sketch in my first WC sketchbook. I was that pumped after watching & listening to your instructions. Just do it , have fun … and it came out great 😊
I have been a subscriber ever since. Thank you, Sir.
Thank you 🙏🙏 and good points too ☺️
I just came across your channel. I'm a watercolorist, and I love your ideas for plein air. I'm tired of lugging around an easel and my large palette. I'm older, and I can definitely handle the items you suggest.
Thank u for this video! I’m a total beginner who loves Urban Sketching but didn’t know where to start practicing so this is perfect for me! Thanks so much!
I so love this. Super clear and I can’t wait to try your loose style. Please keep these coming, they’re amazing.
OF course - another like this coming on Saturday ;)
I have never ever ever ever been an artist. And this video inspired me to run out and get my supplies. I cannot wait to paint with you 😅
Awesome 😎😎 please have fun - not always a smooth journey, but so worthwhile
So much fun! Love your teaching style, your enthusiasm, and your art work and colors.
Thank you Marie, means a lot :)
Your approach is brilliant, relaxed and easy going, I love it. I’ve gained so much confidence through it, thank you Toby. Stevie, York
You are very welcome
I am in the process of putting together a plein air kit and you have made it so simple and accessible for me. Great tutorial and inspirational 💜🙏
Glad it was helpful!
This is so great, you mean l dont have to draw every brick.! I am inspired to try this, as this is my style to. Thank you so much, great lesson.
My pleasure 😊
I've always loved this loose style of urban watercolor sketching and am so happy to have found this video. Will definitely be trying this after work today!
Have fun!
My urban sketches that looked like 💩 are actually starting to look sort of OK using your simple step by step approach - thank so much! A tutorial about avoiding ‘muddy colours’ would be super helpful though 😊.
This is a great idea 💡 thanks
About " muddy colors" - i usually add lighter colors or white to whatever I am mixing. water color is so forgiving since it can be washed / shaped in many ways . like he mentions just stay loose- or play with mixing and you will find the way that you like. also keep a journal what have you mixed - hope it helps.
Gracias, saludos de Ciudad de México 🇲🇽

Hello, this morning I discovered your Urban sketching for beginners and I really liked it. I subscribed and happy to follow you.
I am 70 years old and I dream of learning to make a sketchbook. Thanks to your video I think that all hope is allowed to me.
I do watercolor landscapes but I have trouble drawing urban spaces. Thanks for this video. From Toulouse France
Thank you so much 😀 And thank you for your thoughts, I hope your sketchbook goes well - and do feel free to ask any questions :)
I was getting bored and frustrated with watercolor since I just wasn't seeing improvements, but your video really inspired me and now I'm having fun again! Thank you so much!
My pleasure 😊
Great Job Toby thank you! How refreshing!
Absolutely fabulous tutorial!
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much to share all this. I am so excited to start do this.
Love your channel!
I use a whiskey flask for water and a collapsible cup. They both slide into a bag. The flask never leaks. Won’t crush. And I love Moleskine books!
Whisky flask is a great idea, flat as well making it easy to stash I imagine!
this is so so wonderful, i've been going through a lot of tutorials and getting quite intimidated but your way of painting is so lovely and accessible
Thank you so much 😀
This feels like 'home' to me! I love your style, which fits so well with the sort of work I want to do. Thanks so much for this, and for your free ten-day course, which I've just signed up for.
You are so welcome!

Glad it was helpful!
Oh Im in heaven. I love this style, I've been battling with the perfectionist TH-cams that leave me blocked with feelings of inadequacy, this way I can begin and flow and find my way while doing it. thank you so much.
You're so welcome!
Thankyou, great advice and lovely painting.
One of the best line and wash tutorials I have seen. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful art and skill with us. I learned a lot about urban sketching.
Happy to hear that!
Thank you, Toby!!! You’re a wonderful teacher!!!!!
Glad you think so!
This is fantastic - thank you! Great overview, technique and I love the fact that you point out that minimal supplies can produce great results. I've been trying to find the most portable set of supplies I can but for some reason still thought I needed to have a whole bunch of brushes. I love the idea of just one.
