This is a very well-presented, clearly understandable video on the challenging (for me) topic of perspective. I’m an old dude that absolutely loves life’s creative side, who’s had virtually no art education, and yet still aspires to draw and/or paint images that others might appreciate. YT is marvelous in helping guide those, like me, who never had the opportunity to learn this stuff. Then I happened upon this site. I feel like a light bulb went on while watching this particular video. I quickly subscribed to this site and can’t wait to explore Toby’s other videos more thoroughly. I just wish I had access to this kind of thing 50 years ago. Thank you Toby for sharing your talents and helping prove that, with a bit of help, you’re never to old to pursue your passion(s).
Great video! Same here! I have had no art education either and a life long dream of creating art, specifically perspective. I’ve watched many videos and this one just CLICKED for me. Bravo!
You said it perfectly! I feel like I finally grasped it and he did it in about 15 minutes that takes pure skill! I feel less stupid now that it clicked.😂 I'm not going to embarrass myself and say how many videos I've watched on this subject before I quickly zoned out. You kept it simple and sweet and the way you drew and showed it in the photo was magic to me. 😂Thank you for explaining it so I could grasp it! Can't wait to watch more videos!
Wow Wow Wow. This was a great video. I sat and ran through it three times already because perspective is the one thing that eludes me. But, I have confidence now that I can master it after watching this. I plan to practice, practice, practice and watch this video even more until I get it down perfectly. Thank you for making it easy to understand.
This is actually one of the best perspective explanations I've seen. I have desperately needed one that explained it but also took a real drawing and basically worked backwards. Thank you! Going to watch a few more of your videos. Even though I don't plan to do much drawing of similar style, I can still learn much
Great info on roads not going higher than the horizon line….. a mistake I often make when putting trails in landscapes. They always look wonky. Now I know why! Perspective has always been a challenge for me, so I truly appreciate your simple explanations and illustrations as to how it works.
Because I love drawing and painting houses, churches, cottages etc…….I really needed this lesson. And you made it very easy for someone (me) with ADHD to understand. Thank you. 😊
Thanks! I plan to watch this video a few times to acquire a natural, efficient feel for easily using perspective lines. Your video builds upon what I have previously learned. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! This subject has been difficult for me. Which is why I don’t paint city scenes. I’m going to give this a try and I believe I will be successful with your instruction ❤❤❤
My head almost exploded😅 I'll have to watch this with paper and pencil. I'll have to print some pictures and draw on them. It makes sense for sure. Thank you Toby. Persective is 1 of many things I have trouble with. On a short, which I can't locate, you were heart broken about a comment from someone not improving their art. I can relate. I have taken all my art supplies to Goodwill many times. At times the frustrations are to overwhelming. I draw something everyday from "how to draw" books but can't look at something and draw it. I try to resist chucking stuff but I just get so depressed. It's why I did inktober. I figured it would be a hot mess but was fun attempting different ideas. Again, thank you for your wonderful videos. They are fun!
You are a star … many a time I’ve thought of starting a drawing but never really understood where it was going… this has opened up a whole new world for me in my drawing … thank you so much.
Such a fantastic exploration of perspective! I have read books, I have had classes but somehow you manage to bring the critical things to remember, in the order you need to remember them. Brilliant.
Very helpful video in understanding perspective! I love your videos Toby. Your teaching style resonates with me, and the calmness of your voice keeps me coming back! Have a great day!
TOBY!!!!!! FINALLY! I was feeling stupid (I’m not hard on myself….no) and discouraged. Then I saw your video. Hallelujah! Thank you for encouraging and equipping all of us!
Thanks so much for this lesson Toby. I once had an art teacher who tortured his class by wasting one third of the lesson every week on repeatedly explaining perspective. I came to actually hating the topic and resorted to just common sense winging it. Cheers from Toronto Ontario Canada 🤗
I’m glad I found your chanel, I graduated from architecture school this February however my school didn’t have emphasis on drawing and sketching, I took it upon myself to start teaching myself such crucial skills for my craft. Hoping to see more content from you with urban sketches. Many thanks 🫡
I've been able to do buildings and houses on the road (for the most part) just by "eyeballing" perspective, but my windows and doors have never ever looked right. I know why now! This was the simplest yet most immediately effective lesson I've ever gotten. A real duh/aha! moment for me. Subscribed! And trying the 10 days course too. Thanks!
WOW ... it clicked for me. like @catedralirish820, I am an older (68) and new (6-7 weeks) watercolor/sketch newbie. I haven't done much drawing or watercolor since grade school and was teased by family for my art so made the decision that I was not creative. I've been a hobby photographer and now also videography and my day job was as a self employed software developer. So, finally common sense kicked in and I realized that I was creative :) ... so, now learning watercolor and drawing. All that to say after some good, bad and ugly illustrated journal entries, after watching this video, I quickly sketched a desk that was raised to work standing, located about 18 feet away from me. I was able to see horizon and the lines of perspective AND my result ... holy cow! I can't wait to try more. Thanks!!
I was a student pilot for a while. Even though I had a very rudimentary concept of horizon line, it really amazed me to experience it like that. Pilots use the horizon to fly, straight and level you look to both sides and check the wings are equidistant to the horizon, etc. Even if there are mountains that rise above and down to the horizon you see where the line is. And as you say, always relative your eyes.
Excellent method of teaching what could be a complicated subject that you’ve turned into a “can-do” method! I’m ready to tackle a sketch of a Viennas Cafe we visited 2 weeks ago!!
This video!!!!! Honestly I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve already watched what feels like a billion other videos on this, but I think this one actually clicked for me it was such a simple yet focused explanation and I can’t wait to try out perspective again!!!
Dude this is the most informative, easy to understand and valuable video I've ever seen in regards to drawing. I'm a casual artist that tries to better himself when he can and this just took me to a whole new level. I cannot thank you enough for this.
This is, by far, the best video on perspective I've ever seen, you made it so much more simple than most its very easy to understand and apply. Thank you
I did my first watercolour yesterday and my perspective was all over the place. After my wife pointed out my faults (again😢) I decided to look for some tuition and happened along this video, it all suddenly made sense and became clear. All I need to do now is watch this video another couple of times to get the information in my mind properly, practice, practice and more importantly practice…. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
This video is so so helpful. This is exactly what I have been fumbling with in my drawings and sketches. Thank you so much for making it so understandable. I am so happy to have found this video at the right time.
That sounds like a great topic for anyone interested in art and drawing! Perspective is such a fundamental skill in sketching, and it really brings drawings to life by adding depth and realism. It's wonderful that there are resources available to make learning this skill more accessible. For anyone wanting to improve their drawing skills, understanding perspective is a game-changer. Keep up the great work in exploring and learning new artistic techniques! 🎨✨
Hi Toby, I've been working on perspective since St Neots, and I've had a couple of successes 😊. But this is a great video to keep coming back to, for reminders. Thank you.
Very wonderful lesson. However I would love to see you break it down more slowly for a full drawing. Maybe I need to watch again but I didn’t get how you know what goes where on the horizon line. Or regarding the line. And other perspective lines to vp Or did that have more to do with how I angle the lines? And depending on pov. How did a, b, or c change how you drew a building according to perspective. Like the sitting guy. How would that change how you draw the building? How do you draw the scene for a painting without drawing all those helpful little vp lines? So excited to give this a try next time I sketch! 😊
This is brilliant!! It’s so simple and easy to understand! I’ve been wanting to start doing plein air drawing for a long time, but I never could grasp the perspective part. I watched a hundred videos, but they all seemed confusing and almost anti-artistic in a way, because the explanations were either too “technical” or just lacking all the information… maybe it was just me! LOL YOUR video was totally understandable, easy to grasp, detailed, and do-able! I’m 100% sure I can incorporate your excellent instruction and begin my plein air journey (without a slide rule or scientific calculator 😂). Thank you so much! 😊
I was thinking about starting some rough sketching mostly to improve my eyesight and some general therapy. Then I froze and thought about perspective.I thought ok I'll throw a little in ha! thanks for sharing your knowledge,I like your sincere and relaxed communication and teaching method I subscribed.
Excellent! I used to be a good hand with pen or pencil but haven't drawn very much the last couple of years. This was huge help to me in a painting I want to complete. I missed the perspective. I think I can get it now. Thank you.
Wow! Such a clear explanation! I have no formal art education, but volunteer teaching art to kids all the time. I am going to do a much better job of teaching perspective after watching this. Thank you! (I love that you are just sketching and not using rulers and being exacting. It feels more approachable that way for me.)
Thank you SOO MUCH for this explanation! I’ve never been good in composing scenes and I never knew why. Now it all makes sense… I am trying to return back to sketching. I saw some videos that already improved my skills quite a bit. And I am so happy to find your tutorial as I am super interested in urban architecture sketching! ❤
Really enjoy this video, thank you so much for posting! The information was really clearly conveyed and was easy to understand. Already seeing an improvement in my sketches/drawings just from keeping perspective in mind.

Thank you for this really helpful guide!
