I have had this video pinned to watch for month. I have been out of sketching for over three years and have been too "afraid" to pick it back up for fear I'd lost both and skill I had developed and the joy it brought me. Finally forced myself to do it today and it was SO REWARDING! Toby is such a good teacher and this tutorial was a gift to me this morning!
I watch one video of yours and now I believe I can be an artist!! Haha! You make it seem so easy. I am definitely going to try my hand at this type of sketching.
This is the most fantastic art I've seen, I love your loose style! You have inspired me to start drawing and painting after giving up 12 years ago. Thank you Toby!
Toby, I wanted to let you know how much your techniques have been enhancing my loose sketch journey. I'm truly grateful-your guidance is inspiring me to keep pushing forward.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have been enjoying watercolour for just over 3 years now. I follow several artists. I find pen and wash are my favourite. I think sometimes I spend so much time following I am forgetting to find my own confidence and style. Your tutorial with your encouraging words and exercise was very helpful. Thank you again. Happy 2024 to you.
For various reasons I haven't done any sketching or painting for a few months but I really enjoyed this Toby and i realised how much I've missed it all - I need to make more time to get back into my art. You have an ability to make an ordinary scene look quirky and fun and you just seem to know what to leave out and what detail to put in. Thanks Martin
It was great to have a glimpse into your sketch book. I can’t think of a better way to embrace Inktober than by starting one of Toby’s courses. I’ve done them all and they are perfect for beginners and people with experience. What are you waiting for guys, just do it!!
You convinced me to try a fountain pen! The way it transformed the sketch at end was beautiful. I’m specifically working on my sketching to improve my watercolor so this spoke to me.
Thank you so much for this lovely tutorial! I finished my first ink & wash sketch that I"m actually happy with this morning after watching it. You rock!
i am obsessed with this! i am going to give it a go i think.. i love the look of it so much. i am currently on a sketching journey with ink and light watercolour washes and have been really enjoying this journey so far!
Very inspiring! I love drawing with ink pens, I usually just use the inkpin ones, I will look into fountain pens now. I am just getting back into drawing after a long time. Thanks
I feel like I hit the jackpot when I found your channel! 😁 It totally removed my anxiety from beginning with fineliners and the way you simplify it makes it like okay to make mistakes! Do you have a video on your thoughts on proportions? 😊
Lovely... very very enjoyable. I love working with pen and ink though I will be new to Urban sketching. I love anything that has fine details to it. Thnku... 😊
What type of paper should I be looking for to start my journey in drawing? I am a beginner and I am enjoying your style and teaching methods. Thank you!
I like cheap watercolour paper, you can buy big blocks of it on Amazon for example - gives you flexibility to try ink, pencil and watercolour soluble stuff without having multiple pads
I intend to try Inktober this year with the official prompt list, thank you for the pen and ink ideas this will be very helpful! Would be fun to share if you have intention to do the challenge as well ! 🤩🖋️📖
You are a great teacher. I am trying to learn to draw and paint and I am excited you have these classes. Can you tell me what you recommend for a drawing pad? Is this an Ipad and is there one that is better for drawing? Or are there apps to add? I noticed it said Gallery at the top of the screen. Thanks so much!
Well, I did it. It’s not too bad, if I’m honest…especially now that I’ve walked away from it for a bit. 😂 I’ve never used this particular pen before (it is a fairly cheap fountain pen) and I found it really hard to control the intensity of the line, so I may save it for doing more of the refining work than the initial sketching. Sorry for the rambling post! Loved the video, thanks for all you share with us! I’ll tag you on Instagram so you can see what on earth I’m babbling about. 😅
Hi Toby, I have a few Winsor and Newton coloured inks which I don't really know what to do with. Would you use them in a fountain pen? Or maybe use them with a brush like watercolours? They contain shellac which makes me nervous - I don't want to ruin my pens and brushes!
Hello ! Could anyone please tell me which fountain pen version to use for sketching ? There are a few different versions. Thanks in advance ! Best Lukas
I like the way you added shading with the water soluble ink from your other fountain pen. Somehow my brain was seeing it as either/or. I’m using my waterproof ink OR my water soluble ink. I like the way you incorporated both! For Inktober do most people follow the prompts? Some of them are so vague. And are you supposed to post ink only, black and white only or are colored inks and watercolors along with the ink okay?
I can't speak for all fine liners, but unipin, rotring, winsor newton are certainly in mm. Check the Winsor Newton website - www.winsornewton.com/row/graphic-art/fineliners/#:~:text=The%20Winsor%20%26%20Newton%20fineliner%20is,0.5%2C%200.8%20and%201.0%20mm. Here is a quote from their website - The Winsor & Newton fineliner is consistent and reliable in all nib sizes and colours. Available in Black in 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0 mm.
You can take them literally, or go very left field - the first one is ghost... you could draw the ghost busters van, the ghost busters crew, draw any person from history, draw a normal urban scene and leave the distant buildings faint and 'ghosted', draw a ghostfish...

I'm not sure that I do have a video explicitly on proportions!

Pen & Ink time baby!!!!!! Let’s get out those 85 to 120 g/m sketchbooks we all have. 😅
Good one as usual Toby, thanks!
Yes please!
I intend to try Inktober this year with the official prompt list, thank you for the pen and ink ideas this will be very helpful! Would be fun to share if you have intention to do the challenge as well ! 🤩🖋️📖
You're so welcome! I'll be doing something ... either inktober, historytober, boattober...
Nice, I might try it myself 😊
Do it 🙏
Nice guide, thank you.👍
Pleasure :)
So clear.
Glad to hear that!

I'm not the best to offer that advice, I use my iPad occasionally
Are you doing videos for all of inktober? Like daily?
Hehe don't give me ideas!
You sir, are my hero! You have a new fan and a new subscriber 👏🏼⭐️
Wow, thanks!

What do you think about bent nibs for fountain pens
I think they're great, but they don't suit me so much because I like a looser grip

Don't put them in a fountain pen! Get a cheap dip pen and have some fun - few ideas in this blog post www.urbansketch.co.uk/blog/ink-and-pen-supplies
Thank you - great ideas in your blog post which I'll try. @@TobySketchLoose

I think the strict people will say of cours it is ink only, coloured inks allowed... For me, no harm in adding watercolorus :D
😮
🥴
Welche Tinte ist das ?
Check the supplies links
Casually sketching with a $2,000 pen is such a flex 😂
haha it was a very generous gift, I figured I should use it!
That’s what it’s for
i thought that the measurements of fine liners were in pica?
I can't speak for all fine liners, but unipin, rotring, winsor newton are certainly in mm.
Check the Winsor Newton website - www.winsornewton.com/row/graphic-art/fineliners/#:~:text=The%20Winsor%20%26%20Newton%20fineliner%20is,0.5%2C%200.8%20and%201.0%20mm.

I'm not creative enough to do inktober promps😂
You never know until you try. That’s my worry too, but I did every day last year!
You can take them literally, or go very left field - the first one is ghost... you could draw the ghost busters van, the ghost busters crew, draw any person from history, draw a normal urban scene and leave the distant buildings faint and 'ghosted', draw a ghostfish...
@@TobySketchLoose True! I'll give it a go. Dream is the 1st one!
