This is fantastic, Toby! A great summary of your artistic style and the great tips and tricks and advice you give in your courses. hey everyone! Sign up for Toby's courses - they are great!!!
Toby is a leader in the world of art in encouraging folks up to be themselves and enjoy the creative process outside the confines of what others think. His instructions are the basic skills that are helpful to all artists without making them weighty. I tell people just pick up a pencil and sketch/doodle away. The more one draws the more one might be curious about improving skills, etc. If not, so what. There is a healing and spiritual dimension to being creative no matter what your medium. Toby exudes that quality in his approach to art. He is a blessing.
Thank you Toby for mentioning that urban art indoors is still urban art! I have limited mobility and cannot walk very far. Sitting outdoors would also be difficult. However your approach to art has completely changed how I feel about creating art. I have the freedom to be myself and have fun! I am really enjoying your Sketch Loose courses. I am now on the 3rd course, which is excellent, as were the previous two. Thank you for this brilliant video.
Toby, well done. This is amazing. Thank you! +1 for the inclusive notes at the beginning. For those new to Toby's work, cannot recommend highly enough. His skillshare courses are definitely worth it. Enjoy!
i call my own doodling 'suburban sketching', personally. probably because living on the outskirts of a city, and also drawing at night before bed, in the quiet of my desk, after everyone is asleep and out of my attention gives me the peace i need to feel free. THANK YOU Toby! your instruction holds wealth of brilliant tips and bits of actual clever clarity that i find liberating. I think we might be locals (judging by the initial few snapshots), and if we ever meet around, I'd be delighted to treat you to a pint of two.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT ! Thank you SO much! Your 10 Days of Sketching Loose opened up a whole new world for me about a year ago & I've learned so much from your channel since then. This is the Best-Ever guide to overcoming fear of 'not being born an Artist' and learning basic techniques that can be used immediately and make anyone happy. Your joyful approach is the best of all. Thank you for your channel-- it's changed my life with art !
This is a great video! So many one liners that refresh my understanding, a great teaser for all your lessons. I'm watching it this morning before I head out ironically to an urban sketching impromptu gathering which I organised. I also prescribe to the "no rules in art". But it's about posting your work online that rule applies. Love your work Toby!
I found your channel today and I just love it! I subscribed and I’m watching my 3rd video. I loved art when I was young but could not pursue but now that I have chosen to make time in my 50s I am beginning a wonderful journey! Thank you! 😊
Such a helpful video Toby - thank you so much. My challenge is to loosen up (having been encouraged to 'colour within the lines at school!') so you are a great inspiration. Also enjoyed lots of lovely views of my old home town - Bath
Thanks Toby. Because of coming across your videos last year I started finally learning to sketch/draw with no pressure and one year in I love this new hobby and it has changed the way I travel and view the world around me.
My Mum & I did a lot of urban sketching the last time we were in London (2002 - too long!) And it was wonderful! So many people stopped to chat with us. What a lovely way to meet and chat. Excellent tutorial!
Thanks Toby for this very insightful video about urban sketching especially with all the tips to loosen up and make things look more interesting. Appreciate your sharing of your knowledge and I love your style! Hopefully I will start my own journey on urban sketching soon. Thanks again.
I. Loved. This! Sat for a good bit in my nook with scrap paper and fountain pen. Paused and watched and back again. Sinking in I think. Practice. Many Thanks!
Oh my, a bit like drinking from a firehose! So much wonderful information. Will have to re-view it in bits and pieces as I tackle each item you addressed. Thank you for this.
Loved this video. I've taken your course and this was such a good review. Highlighting such good hints on perspective, remembering not to over value people in scenes, reminder of different ways to hold your pen and not to overcomplicate your drawing.! Those hints and more! Thanks Toby
Toby this is a mini masterclass! I'm abt 3/4 of the way through but want to comment before I forget it all! Great idea at 3:10 to use a cutting mat as a support (I have a smaller one too). I appreciated "the tangle of light and dark" re shading. And great idea to fill pages with doors 🚪 and windows for practice and also reference. Love your "scratchy" people too. I tried to buy you a coffee as a token of this new urban sketcher's appreciation for your great content😊. Hope it worked.
Thank you so much for this video (and all the others I'm about to watch). I'm just starting to sketch and I am very excited to learn. This video has learned me so much about not having to sketch perfectly, drawing loosely, paying attention to forms and in particular about perspective (I never learned about this much at school). Kind regards from the Netherlands
Toby this was an amazingly informative tutorial that I have looked for someone to break down for ages. I love drawing and painting shop fronts and houses but am very new to this type of drawing and painting. Your tutorial has given me the insight I needed to keep persevering. Thankyou x🥰🏴
Toby, you are a natural teacher!! Your patience and kindness spurs me on my artistic journey and you have opened up my eyes to this amazing art form. I encourage anyone to take your courses, you won't be disappointed!! Thank you for your time and hard work!
Thank you for all of these tips. This is worth looking at a couple more times. The more I sketch, the looser I get. I think it also makes a difference if you are in the zone or not. If I am in the zone, I find, I can "Just do it".
Toby, a great overview and reminder. Even though i've taken your courses, this is a great reminder for when I feel like I've lost my way! You have a way of pulling one back to the enjoyment of sketching. thanks
Really enjoyed this recap into your techniques and philosophy having been following you for a while now. Love your positivity and your encouragement to do it and enjoy it. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. 🙂
I think I am a total disaster and I am only able to draw with ruler and square, but I'll try to follow Your advice and let lines go free and color flow. You are fan-tas-tic at inspiring people. Thank You !
Such a GREAT video Toby!! Thank you for impressing the notion to create our version of a scene and to not try and replicate an image!!!! I have to remind myself of this constantly!!! I appreciate ALL of your efforts that go into your videos!! It shows!!! 😊
Thank you so much I really enjoy it and learned a lot, I have seen many of your videos and always make me get my pen out and give it a go. You have been an agent for my sketching journey I can thank you enough
Wow wow wow! Beautiful video, I really loved it!!! I agree with everything you said and love your philosophy on watercolour and urban sketching! And wow those gorgeous painting you showed us!❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing this video Toby!😃😃
Thank you so much for this! I'm going to have to watch it again and sketch along. I did buy the Mala case and I really like it. I'm still a newbie and find my favorite place is in my car, parked somewhere pretty. I bought a steering wheel tray for 10 dollars on amazon and keep my water cup in the cup holder. I have a comfy seat and my radio has music if I like, lol.
Super introduction. Thanks so much for your efforts in putting this together Toby. I’m new to sketching and watercolours and your video provided me with a wealth of inspiration, tips and skills to develop.
Thanks Toby, you make it look so easy. Personally I find it frustrating at times. I guess I lack your confidence only have been sketching for four months. For me it's a case of take time and keep practicing, which is like taking the medicine. I'd like to draw like you, but it doesn't seem to be happening just yet. I'll just keep on with the Skillshare courses. I could do with something on how to overcome nerves and shaking, so if you have any ideas, I'd be very interested. Thanks, NDC.
Great video, Toby! probably one of my favourites in a long time. Loved the format, but it is understandable that 40+ min videos don't come often! Cheers.
Perspective is taught widely throughout the world .... in Geometry class. Not many pay attention in that class; too many protractors and rulers.😢 However, a good trick is to grab some isometric paper and use that for basic perspective practice. Or print a few pages of isometric paper off your 'puter. Right on the money again, Toby.👍
Toby, this was amazing!! And that’s coming from someone who has taken a lot of your courses. I loved the summary of your techniques and thoughts. It was very carefully done. Thanks!!
As always, I enjoyed your video. You make it look so easy not to mention a lot of fun. Your tips and tricks have been a big help to me, so thank you once again. 😎
Really fun video, it gave many tips & cheer ups, fun to watch & useful. I started out trying to draw with you but your speeding film made it impossible but, I did sketch some & it definitely gave me ideas. Think the tips our art is for us & mustn’t be exact in every way are useful. Enjoy was your message & I do, even if it’s not all 100%. Thanks
Toby, I love your channel and you have inspired me to fill my sketchbooks, finally! I recently came across a picture of Belem Tower, Lisbon Portugal. it is beautiful and would love to see how you sketch it if you haven't already. Thank you for such a great channel and all of your hard work! Derick from Tennessee!
gracias por este video y gracias por tu esfuerzo y dedicacion , tengo 70 años y tu me haz motivado a dibujar y lo mas interesante a divertirme dibujando . Gracias de corazon .
You're right, 'urban sketching' can be what you want it to be. However, copying from a photo is simply a different experience from drawing from life. To my mind, it depends if you are more interested in the product or the process: it's what floats your boat.
You’re welcome. Your films are, to be honest, worth much more but this is what I can share at the moment. Thank you for your contents everything again.
It is mesmerising to see you draw with such consummate ease!!! Hats off! Many many thanks for such a detailed vlog! I will watch it again and try to draw along. Tried to draw a tree (no where near yours), but my daughter liked it!
You are a master!, this video encourage me to grow my sketch habilities, im architect and incorporate this course to my work sketching makes my daily routine more fun!
Toby, you are a wonderful, generous person❤ You have opened up new ways of thinking about and actually doing sketching. I thank you wholeheartedly for your openness and genuine support 🙏

So very very helpful. I really struggle with perspective, it keeps me from urban painting. Thank you
