    "We're simplifying, we're sketching, we are being quick and expressive, not realistic."
    I need to remember that because I get caught up in all the details and forget that I'm even loose sketching! I'm writing this down and putting it where I can see it when I'm painting! 😊

    Toby, you are doing a huge service, these videos make watercolor and urban sketching so approachable for art newbies like me. And by making them free you are giving everyone access to high quality art instruction. I love your philosophy of embracing imperfections. Thank you!

    Even after 6 months of watching your video I still class myself as a beginner and I still keep on learning from your videos Toby. You really kept it nice and simple and explained everything really well. I liked the way you added the darker brick colour it imparted real character to the building. That was the first time I've noticed you drying your brush between colours and brush strokes - that explains why my colours just everywhere - too much water. I'll give it a go 👍

    Hi Toby. I have been introduced to your channel as I am spending 6 weeks non weight bearing as I recover from foot surgery. Fabulous silver lining as I’m thoroughly enjoying my journey with urban sketching and can’t wait to get back out into the world to photograph my own urban sketch photos. Meanwhile I have ploughed through my friends FB travels in Europe and yours. Great instructions and inspiration thank you Toby. I live in a beautiful country New Zealand.

    It's amazing how a simple drawing can surprise you when you add basic colours. I never learned painting with watercolour because it always ruined my painting, so I gave up. Now that I'm back to painting after so many years of not doing a single drawing, I will definitely begin with sketching, besides doing pencil drawing and acrylic painting.

    Thanks for the Clip, it helps me a lot to start Urban sketching. Even the first results are amazing, with Your Tutorial and following instructions. Hope, I can do it myself in the open field & Cities ;). Without camera I would not go on a Trip, but combined Photo and Sketching (Book) it could be perhabs possible and a fun thing. Thanks a lot!

    Hi Toby,
    My husband , Doug, discovered your tutorials awhile back and has been using your loose sketching techniques and creating wonderful paintings. As for me, I have always struggled with art, but I completed your 10 days tutorial for beginners under his name and actually did a few lessons besides that. Some things came out surprisingly well so I was happy, and some will be a longer process! HaHa!
    But I just watched things that you wish you had told yourself early on, and that made me feel much better. So, onward with the struggle and am really enjoying your videos.
    Thank you so much for your kind and gentle encouragement!

    A great video tutorial and love your style and approach, which I found easy to follow. I carve/whittle as a hobby and have always fancied sketching. This loose style seems perfect for me. I notice that a lot of people use a fountain pen, but being of the age when these were used in schools, I struggled with them as I'm left handed. But thinking about it that's because we write left to right and it seems a lot draw a similar way. Maybe I can use a fountain pen and draw from the right?

    Thanks so much for this Toby! I’ve been going to watercolor classes for a few months now and the style that they’re teaching me just does not resonate with me. I want everything to be outlined and this sketching loose water coloring technique really speaks to me. I’m still in the early stages of working out how much is too much (not getting that right yet) but I know that with practice I’m going to be creating some really cool stuff. Well, my humble apologies, but I'm going to buck the trend. I think the initial sketch was so inaccurately proportioned that there is no rescuing it with any amount of colour wash or detailing. Thirty seconds with a soft pencil setting out the basic outlines would have saved a lot of the problem, but so would getting the door heads squarish rather than arched. The first floor being nearly 50% taller than the ground floor is glaring. Hints of door furniture (knobs, hinges letterboxes etc) would have helped, too, because at the moment it's not clear whether you are looking at a door or an arched opening with shadow.
    There's lots of great stuff in this video, but the building is so mis-proportioned that the result is frankly cartoonish.

    • @TobySketchLoose
      @TobySketchLoose  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think cartoonish is ok 😊
      Thanks for the feedback and thoughts, nice to have a negative comment that is thought through.
