1975 Mr. Olympia : Serge Nubret Vs Joe Weider and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nubret was at the peak of his bodybuilding career where he faced the IFBB, Ben Weider suspended Nubret for his involvement in a movie that the IFBB described as having explicit content. They didn't want Serge overshadowing the main hype around Arnold and Lou Ferrigno in the documentary Pumping Iron. Devastated, Nubret stopped training and dieting, losing 12 pounds in 12 days.
To this day, many believe that Arnold wasn’t Unbeatable and if Nubret had competed at full strength, the outcome might have been different. It's one of the great 'what-ifs' in Olympia history.

Bodybuilding competition is a bit odd to me. Get a great body, but who needs an award?!
But recently, powerlifting events have some politicking happening too, like that squat technique Mitch hooper did vs ass to the floor squats others are doing, and yet he got the wsm title. And for the record, bodybuilding shouldn’t be called a sport, but it’s more of an art. It’s bodysculpting, not achieving the greatest wt or highest reps.

I like the physiques from the 70s, but I think the 80s were the peak of bodybuilding. They were as big as the guys from the 70s, with better conditioning.
Serge will always be Legend to me, just like Mike Mentzer and Nasser

When i started weight training in 1978 .
Serge's picture was the first one I put on the wall for inspiration.
ALL the women and men were in AWE of Nubrets physique
I start Bodybuilding coz of him , for me he was the best ever..
They cheated us for years music, bodybuilding, etc they know Serge was going to win the show
I had the pleasure of seeing Serge guest pose on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia in the late 80s. Fabulous physique, rippling abs. It was part of a Bodybuilding comp. His wife was with him, not posing, but her diamond calves were a sight to behold as she walked up some stairs at one point. It was held in what was like a conference room with a small stage and it was prior to the time when smoking indoors was banned. The air was thick and filled with blue cigarette smoke and I was disgusted at this. Serge seemed pissed off when not on the stage and I gathered at the time it was because of the smoke. Or maybe he was jet lagged?
Thanks for the background on the sneaky politics of the Weider world. I'm a big fan of the Pumping Iron documentary and it was part of the texture of my growing up and weight training. Sobering to learn about some of the grittier realities, even at this late stage, but as I say, I'd rather know the ugly truth than a beautiful lie.
I heared that Serge had some anger problems later in his life.

@@StrongerThanTheWorld A bit of anger I have no problem with. Such a successful guy must have had many maggots trying to gnaw at his carcass before he even croaked. In fact, that's what I once read about him. I think it was members of his own family that came under suspicion over how he died. As soon as there is some free money in a deceased estate, they come out of the woodwork.

Yeh sergio and arnold were weider guinea pigs.weider groomed both of them to build his empire .but reevees could not be manipulated he made movies and money while arnold copied reevees and reg parķs as hercules and went into terminator but stallone stole the highlights .and lou made a better impact as hulk .than any hercules role comick strip character .made more money .than being a security guard or police .like ronnie coleman ,sergio olivia .or security guard lou ferrigno you see they were morons .only arnold schwartzneggar had brain and brawn

Serge Nubret is the Greatest Bodybuilder of All Time.
That's what you would think watching this fantasy.
Serge was not the only great bodybuilder who became a victim of welders.
The book “Pumping Iron” begins with Nubret posing onstage. It talks about how perfect he looks onstage until he turns around, then “disappears”. According to the book, there was something missing with Nubret’s back, or transitioning to the back poses. I don’t recall exactly, but according to the book, it was something he was known for. Arnold himself said Serge would win every Mr. Olympia if everyone stayed still. When he moves, Arnold said he loses. Personally, I always thought he was one of the best ever. His lines were as good as Zane’s, but he was much bigger. His back looked pretty sick to me. I just wanted to share the take from the book. Maybe that was a calculated move by Charles Gaines to help erase him from the movie.
Gaines didn't have to create a story. Just tell the truth.

Even with the few pics I saw of Serge in all the magazines I had as a kid (along with many other kids, I'm sure), HIS is the body I fantasized about having - small ripped waist, big chest and arms. Beautiful. Aesthetic. Awesome and 'functional' in clothes. And I always wondered why he didn't place higher, or why I didn't see much of him. Now I know why. Thanks.

I met serge nubret in 88 or 89 he was so cool and incredible.
I trained in Paris in 1985 or so.He was working out in that gym.Looked awesome.
I went to one of his seminars in about 88. I have a photo with him, me and a buddy.for posterity. What a body!

It's practically common knowledge among fans of old-school bodybuilding that Arnold never would've won the Olympia 7 times without the favoritism of the Weiders -- especially the one in 1980.
I think Arnold only deserved 4-3 olympias
To Arnold, Arnold see Serge Nubret as a threat to his spot. Same way the Olympia did to Kai Greene when his rivalry with Phil Heath, which was clear the powers that behind scripted the 2014 Olympia had a hand in it. It's like music, if a newcomer comes, the current artist will be envious to his or her ascension to the top.

But i don't think Kai Green was a big threat to the IFBB, I think he deserved 1 Olympia at least, but he had a big gut too, and that was hard to fix

Wow, thank you for this video. I remember when I was in high school, I saw a photo of Serge and thought this is an amazing body. I too remember thinking to myself, why is all the attention on Arnold who has a less superior physique than Serge. Times were different and the Weiders were all about themselves and perhaps a bit racist. I still think Serge was amazing and he gets my vote any day.....period. God bless Serge...

I've met Serge Nubret in Salon du muscle in Paris in 2006. A very nice guy! I've also bought his book - I don't think it's translated in English - where he explained well what happened in 1975 Mr Olympia.

Symmetry should take precedence over size in my opinion. Serge is an uncrowned Mr. Olympia. We'll never see such physiques again as BB has gone to the dogs.

Not only did Arnold beat them, Arnold was the only one to continue winning in everything that he did. Winners gonna win. I cant even watch one of his movies now since, " Screw your freedoms," but the man is bodybuilding. He still has The Arnold Classic that rivals the Olympia. Jealousy comes to mind.

I would just like to remind everyone that Serge had no legs whatsoever. He never ever managed to build his legs. Arnold was bigger and a more complete bodybuilder. Fact, get over it.
Surge Nubret, to me had the almost amazing physique at the time. He sits among the greatest bodybuilders of all time.

At least half of Arnold's BB career is fraudulent because Joe Weider and company carefully scripted for him to be a champion like Vince McMahon. Ive seen "Pumping Iron" about 60 to 70 times now over the years and it's clear as day that Serge had the best body on that 1975 Olympia stage DESPITE how they sabotaged his chances with their shenanigans.

Serge was very good in a few poses but had major problems in many other poses. Not thick enough from behind and weak calves.
He had larger traps than Arnold and if you think he didn't have thick back, you never saw him live. However repeating boring old tropes is common. I'm surprised you didn't wheel out the one about his thighs being small. That's a common one, even though his thighs are the same size as Arnold's in '75, despite having stopped training for 12 days.
@@baronmeduse The only thing boring is you. Take another look at Arnolds legs. Ever remember Serge turning his leg inward and highlighting the cuts and muscle in his calves? .
Ever see Arnold live were he would stick out his thigh and show off the separation and thigh sweep from hip to knee?
Ever see Arnold from the side showing off his hamstring which he got almost as big as his glutes? He even developed a slopped ridge and separation between his side glutes and semimembranosus which I have never seen on any bodybuilder let alone Serge Nubret at that time.
And having big traps are fine if they match your physique and current back development. Which Arnolds did. (check out Arnolds back, traps and spinal erectors built by heavy Deadlifts in 1974) Serge never did deadlifts.
There's a big difference between having thighs the same size and having extreme muscle quality and development through out the entire leg.
Arnold took every body part and got them to flow together like a work of art. Especially in 1974. From the baseball like Brachialis in the center of his exterior biceps pose to his signature arms extended straight out bicep pose Arnold took the time to develop details and special effects in his contest physique that few novices would notice but contest judges would.
I don't expect you to consider your wrong and go back and educate yourself about these not so obvious facts on the difference between a World Class physique and just a great bodybuilder.
Today nobody does that.
But I did not want to leave a comment with boring tropes as you stated and list for you just some of the things that were known back in the day as we all loved Serge but could remain objective on how he could improve.
Of course you can dismiss everything I wrote and do no investigation for yourself .
But if you did analyze these observations for yourself, then I would say that was very uncommon and pretty special.

@@StrongerThanTheWorld And your saying Serge did not resemble that mode? Everybody in bodybuilding at the time was playing catchup with Arnold. Serge with his 50 set a body part training spent far too much in his workout doing just arm and chest routines and not enough leg training and back training and working on his overall separation, thickness and whole body symmetry.(like most Europeans of the time)
He was never a big dead lifter and focused on the show muscle like Arnold but he never put in the work to emphasize his weak points namely calves.

Am I the only one who’s confused on how was he bigger than Frank Zane when prime Frank was 200 lbs on stage and also 8 cm shorter💀 the difference between them in weight is so minimal and Frank is also shorter, but still looks much smaller compared to Serge
While Frank Zane and Franco Columbu were good Olympia champions, i don't think it would be much of an issue for Serge to beat them
@@StrongerThanTheWorld You’re right, the thing that I can’t understand is on stage in his prime he weighted around the same as Frank Zane in his prime, but Zane is also significantly shorter. If that’s the case Zane should be much bigger but for some reason he’s just not
Serge was missing so many body parts it isn't funny. He looked good in only a few specialized poses. And when he turned around to the back the contest was over.
There was a whole subculture of bodybuilders within a subculture in the 79s that were rabid Frank Zane fans.
But I give the devil his due Look at Arnolds calf development which were formerly a weak point for him. Really tremendous when Arnold would cock his calf inward and look down at them. And take a look at Arnold's side side poses were you can see that his hamstrings from the side is almost as big as his glutes. Serge Nubret had nothing like that in his legs and simply could not compete with Arnolds world class proportion.
I think you got your numbers wrong. Zane normally competed at around 185-190lbs. Zane never ever competed at 200lbs, he used to compete in the under 200lbs category back when the Mr Olympia was split into lightweight and heavyweight categories. Nubret normally competed at around 212lbs. He only competed at 200lbs that one time in 1975 when they banned him from competing and then allowed him last minute after he already lost 12lbs from undereating and so he came in a depleted state. I'm not sure why the websites make it seem as if that was his usual competition weight.

I still say Arnold in top form was better than Surge Nubret was at any point in his career.. Arnold still would've overpowered him, especially in the back, arms and chest.. Surge may have had more muscle separation and maybe a little more aesthetic than Arnold overall.
Arnold had his weaknesses too, He weighted only 230 lbs on stage, His conditioning was average and wasn’t always on point, His Legs, triceps, forearms, Traps were Small compared to the rest of the body, Also, He had a wide waist compared to Serge.
Arnold had only 3 strong points: chest, biceps, calves, The rest has no wow factor
