I idolized these guys in my youth, but then slowly, I learned their gains weren’t natural, and my admiration waned. Still, they inspired me to push myself in the gym.
That's great but I feel like it discouraged alot of kids at the same time myself included, I feel bad for any Natural lifters that look to these Clowns for Health of Fitness advice.
It's a shit ton of work regardless of outside help. The hormones just accelerate the progress...or make more progress possible. But they should've been honest about the chemicals from the get.
Even with the help of steroids 99.9% of ppl don’t have the genetics work ethic and discipline to even get close to the physiques these guys achieved. Putting on that much muscle while achieving that low body fat % is impossible without the aid of gear.
@@gregnixon1296 The problem is life - Life persistently interrupts your progress. You go to college and maybe you can train in a good gym - or not. As an artist I used to study these guys intensely for modeling used in my work. I always used to find myself using Arnold and Frank Zane simply because they looked very proportionate. Arnold in his early years is immaculate in that regard. I would never say perfectly proportioned but he knew what he was doing and worked damn hard to get a very balanced look. Frank has that same type where abs aren't a mess and his lats don't make his arms push out to make him look like a plush toy. Great respect for all of these people and I certainly appreciate the work they put in.
Frank Zane was amazing!! I remember he was one of the reasons I started training at the age of 13...now I'm like 50....and the age haven't been that kind to me. :)
Frank Zane was my icon and the person I most aspired to emulate, body building wise. He looked down right regular at 81. I guess there really is no escaping time, even for super men.
@Swiss Samson Look at Hershey Walker the former football player. I saw some photos of him working out when he was in the gym trying to learn mix martial arts. He wanted to try and compete when he was in his early 50s. He was still ripped.
I ALWAYS admired Frank Zane the most ! I personally believe him to be one of the most....if not the most finest Specimens in the Bodybuilding world ! (It wasn't just about bulk but symmetry and he had it...along with posing) My uncle my Dad's twin brother (RIP) reminded me a lot of Frank Zane !! He even won in the Mr. L.A. tournament ! Also I grew up reading my dad's and uncles "old" bodybuilding magazines and admired guys like Bill Pearl...Steve Reeves...Gordon Scott...John Grimeck and of course Jack Lalane. Then later (my generation) Franco Columbu.... Arnold Schwarzenegger....Lou Ferrigno and of course Frank Zane my favorite. Last but NOT least Sly Stallone looks absolutely great especially for his age even though he never competed he always looked good. P.S. For bulk and muscle and just the great look of it all....Lee Haney...Dorian Yates and Jay Cutler had it ! Mr. Olympias in their own right.

"Doctor" Frank Zane? What planet do you live on? Zane's no doctor, not even in the academic sense. A master's degree does no bestow the title of Doctor on anyone.
We liked and rooted for Arnold in my house in the 70s. I remember him giving an interview later on where they asked him if he used steroids and he said... "Of course, we all did." They also asked him about diet and if he drank milk and he responded "milk is for babies... I drink beer!" Of course, he meant "good beer" with some caloric value and "not that piss water." lol
Yes, he allways says that he and all others uses steroids, but that 60/early 70s stuff was like vitaminpills to that chemistry the stupid Hulks use today...
@@drhkleinert8241 Oh, I understand that. The synthetic hormones they use today create inhumane creatures, not "body builders." They become so inflated, they can't hardly move around and can't reach to wipe themselves, they're so distorted. You couldn't pay me enough to do that to myself. Sad. The stuff in the 70s (I new a guy who used to play for the Jets, he was strangely muscled and lost his hair early, wore a bad toupé, behavior so erratic and self-centered they tossed him off the team) was bad enough, if you didn't take regular breaks from it. I'm not one the shatter dreams since he might fall in love with the positives of bodybuilding but, had I bet my life the guy wasn't natural, if he was, excellent genetics and worth-ethic for many years. But how do I convince someone when the average holywood transformation and Olympia stage look like it's possible and 'not that impressive'. I met Bob Paris on the San Juan Islands back in '95-'96 or so, when he sold his personal gym equipment to a fitness club I worked for. He helped us move it in and set up. Was all custom made pieces. Interestingly, no flat bench press, and he told me he won many Championships using that equipment. Nice guy. That may have been the period in life that he officially quit bodybuilding altogether? Good to see him move on so nicely compared to some of the others here.
I was a fan of Bob Paris back in the 80s and loved his physique. It seemed to me the best combination of size and symmetry. Rory Leidelmeyer was also impressive (and still is in his 60s).
@Ran Man - he didn't just quit like that. It was more of the issue with the Weider bros/corporation. There was plenty of info back then about him. At that time I did like him too, a good bodybuilder with a very good physique (great in fact). But I also remember articles from back then (1990s+) - that were talking about Weider(s) not liking him - just because he was a gay. Hence after tha time, he sort of disapeared after that. But personally I don't think that was just his decission. More of like was was being silently "forced" out: not being able to signing some new contracts with Weider(s), less appearance in various magazines (mareketing), less opportunities...

For me Frank Zane looks the best because he kept his body in a very nice natural proportion all the time. Those heavyweights look impressive in size, but they really look deformed rather than fit. Zane on the other hand looks like the guy that everybody wants to be. Even at an older age he looked awesome, something that none of the heavyweights could maintain because all that exaggerated bulk is very unnatural and difficult to keep.
@@richardklausoj3561 At least he was more careful with his body, maintaining nice proportions. The others just want to look like swollen toads, all deformed and unnatural, like if the sheer bulk was the goal, no matter how disproportionately unpleasant they look.
I highly admire and respect Dorian for his willingly do downsize after retirement. Many guys just want to keep huge until their old age and have serious health issues.

I was a bodybuilder for 25 years. I never competed, I did it because it made me feel good. My body is permanently changed. My arms are stronger than average and my muscles are oddly shaped. I started gaining weight after a year of stopping building. My leg and arm muscles are well defined but I am chubby. I have full control over my stomach muscles. Bodybuilding changes your body permanently. I gain weight if I gain muscle too. It's weird. My body fat weights as much as my muscles do. I had to stop exercising because of seizures. I hate it. I was a yoga therapist and nutritionist. I went to college to learn. I talk to my doctor about everything. I was diagnosed with a rare movement disorder called Tinson Dystonia. Exercise helped me deal with it. I later found out I have another rare condition that causes my muscles to be doubled. I am also very flexible. My nuerological condition makes me dezzy and lightheaded so bending over is a no no. I miss exercising so much. I've had to adapt to my health conditions. I love lifting but with some of the injuries (not lifting related) I've had to slow down. At my peak I weighed 223 lbs at 6' but the problem was the military height/weight standards. (By standards I was 23 lbs over weight) Mind you we did body fat tests (not accurate at all lol) and I always passed it was just a pain in the neck more than anything else. That said I was preparing to attend a leadership school and my first sergeant told me I needed to lose weight. I said I pass tape, where am I going to lose weight from? He just shrugged his shoulders and told me to drop at least ten lbs before the school. I didn't quit lifting I really tightened my diet up and ended up weighing in at the school at 209 lbs. It's rough when you love to do something like lifting yet there's restrictions you have to abide by in order to keep the career you also love. And no, no supplements of any kind ever. All natural.

It's funny how they only mention steroids when talking about some guys. The truth is that they were all on steroids and HGH , men and women. You can get a nice physique naturally , but you can't get what I call " freaky " without them. I know from experience. Don't let anyone b.s. you. Taking steroids isn't " free " muscles though , you still have to put in the work. It's just that you are capable of doing a lot more work on them . Your body and muscles recover from workouts better so you are able to do more. Steroids don't give you muscles.
I remember as a teen in the late 1980s paging through a "Muscle and Fitness" magazine seeing the guys who were obviously ingesting copious amounts of PEDs and one thing I always wondered is how in the heck they were able to get their hands on such a large and consistent supply. To this day I never figured that out. How were they getting such a big, consistent supply for years on end and from who?
Pharmacy’s, if a worker is lazy or your friend he can sell you those steroids without a doctors note, almost all peds are just an overdose of a medicine
In the 80s it was legal. So you could get them from a doctor. But most came from Europe at that time. Now we have underground labs making it. Which is basically people buying raw powders from Chinese wholesalers and cooking+mixing +filtering + bottling yourself in Ur house.

He probably had to give up steroid use then or he would die. I think he used low dose all the time. Smarter than the rest.

They become so inflated, they can't hardly move around and can't reach to wipe themselves, they're so distorted.
Did strange stuff to you.

There are no more "heros" for which young men to aspire, just mutated bullies.
The cover of muscle magazine used to show what you could do with dedication and training, now it's an homage to modern "chemistry" (to use the word loosely) and mad scientists. If I saw my kid getting interested in that, I'd rip it out of his hands and take him to the first rugby test (match) I could find. They're the "real athletes" with heart and determination and the best overall athletes you can find (think football, soccer and wrestling, all in the same game). I played national league for 5 years and they're the best, well centered bunch of loonatics your ever gonna meet and they don't all die of rot by the time they're 55.
Anyway ,I guess they're going to have to take a stand in the sport and ban chemical use in pro and armature levels with strict penalties, like baseball and other sports and have a full reset.
There'll be a lot of pissed off people and the sport will suffer for a bit but, that's better than the slow, painful death it's enduring right now. It used to be about getting fit and being the best you could be, once upon a time.

My nuerological condition makes me dezzy and lightheaded so bending over is a no no. I miss exercising so much. I've had to adapt to my health conditions. I can still left over 500 pounds with my upper body though. I can left my 500 pound electic wheelchair.
Who asked?
@@jakecassidy1015 LOL, quite a story though.
We see how FAKE these STEROID users REALLY are when they finally can't take their STEROIDS because they got ARRESTED/in PRISON or the doctors tell them to come off because of health PROBLEMS...there goes those FAKE STEROID muscles they been HIDING behind!!
ROIDERS are FAKES!
Stay natural buddy!
stop trying to make your life interesting guy
Time is a humbler.
We have so little of it but waste so much of it.
Great video!
All these older dudes for the most part look f'ing amazing. Granted, I'd never want to be so huge, but in my old age I would be blessed to look like Arnold or Lou.
The fact that Arnold is still at it tells me a lot about my frivolous life choices...
Thank you for keeping it positive. I appreciatte your classy sharing of their stories. ❤
I was hoping Franco Columbu would be on here. He and reruns of Conan the Barbarian were the reason I got into weight lifting.
These 3 people who have done all these things to improve this channel is amazing. They had to find all these cool facts and stories.
Alternate title should be "Bodybuilders Lucky to Still be Alive After Years of Drug Abuse"
1:38 Dude was like wow, is that what I’m up against 😳
LOL IKR
Thanks for posting..
I saw some of my favorite motivators from my days at the gym..Cutler, Coleman, Zane, and Platz..But Ronnie, ( light weights baby!! lol) was definitely a beast with the weights.
I absolutely love lifting, but now over 50, I've decided that just keeping fit and lean is a good enough look for me..No no more crazy diets, enhancers, and heavy arse irons for me! lol.
Same here. I used to lift super heavy , I'm paying for it now. Just being fit is good enough these days.
Yeah, hitting the 50's is an eye-opener lol High reps now and slow movements. I'm content with bench pressing 225 lbs for 15 reps
What dry sarcasm!! Your style rocks, Man. Thank you
Ronnie is such a sweetheart too! Jay, ugh, biggest teddy bear. I miss these guys. Love Flex and his personality.
So many great guys weren't on this list.
I agree
I love all of them..other than using gear to inhance my body for training and competing, their lifestyle and eating habits shaped me as I grew up from my 20s to present..God bless all the warriors and worrioretts.
Totally agree !!
I am just shocked to see how all these bodybuilders still look amazing till today! It’s so cool!
LEADERSHIP SCHOOL, GIVE ME A BREAK !, WHAT AN ASSCLOWN ! 🤪🤡😂🤣
@@professorpauls7362 This has been an issue for ages.
We are RUINING the ROIDER'S & STEROID DEFENDER'S FANTASY! Let's continue to EXPOSE them!
They want to walk around with their FAKE STEROID muscles acting like they "worked harder" than everyone else!
I don't get all excited over these STEROID FAKES!
Stay natural buddy!
All natural is the way! Me and Jesus approve 🤙
@@steroidsR4losers love the name.
This was great. in my opinion Bob Paris at his best, is what I would want to look like as a bodybuilder. Thanks for the post.
HEY, I am glad you did a respectful take on on Arnold. Very good, very good.
The golden age is over. Frank Zane was the human statue. Perfection before the mass monsters.
Bro, this motivated me so much I just did 70 push-ups in a row and I’m only 10 years old
at 10 it doesnt give you anything to work out, let your muscles grow in puberty first
Enjoyed watching this.. 😊
22:28 Like Tom, I too had FSGS (Focal Segmental GlomeruloSclerosis) and my first and only transplanted kidney is doing very well for 8 years now, and it good to see Tom is doing very well too. Sometimes it feels like im living with a grenade inside me, but then i remember the family and the person that made their choice to donate their organs, and so i am greatful of another chance...plus its great to be able to drink lots of water, and to relieve my full bladder :D
Gotta give theses guys the credit for the extreme dedication. I've worked out a few times in my live after January 1 for a month or two. Lol.
I spent many a years with most of those guys and ladies back then. Not only was I a bodybuilder too and continue still am at 70 years, but also a trainer/nutritionist to many and owner of Matrix Nutrition Supplements co. then. I used to sponsor many shows, and athletes too. Although I have always been and stayed a natural bodybuilder; 218 LB off season and 190 LB contest day, yet I can still admire the commitment and extremely hard work, especially come time for contest prep of those real-professional athletes using anabolic and/or others. Their dedication is above and beyond to what someone outside of that world could ever conceive and/or endure!
I miss those times and many of those hard working athletes. When your in that zone of body transformation, its a high only those doing it can only grin and cant wait for tomorrow and do it again! R.I.P. to some of those brothers and sisters. 😢
That beginning of the end montage for Pierre 😂🏋️🦵🦴👀😂
I know :(
Love Lou. Such a nice guy!
Would like to see Steve Reeves too but still a beautiful vid
It's funny how they only mention steroids when talking about some guys. The truth is that they were all on steroids and HGH , men and women. You can get a nice physique naturally , but you can't get what I call " freaky " without them. I know from experience. Don't let anyone b.s. you. Taking steroids isn't " free " muscles though , you still have to put in the work. It's just that you are capable of doing a lot more work on them . Your body and muscles recover from workouts better so you are able to do more. Steroids don't give you muscles.
Unbelievable transformations! 😮
The body is a temporary thing that changes, only the soul and breath are eternal.
Excellent compilation
@@HumanGorillaHormone They were legal in the '80s but it was difficult to get a script from your doc. You had to have a medical reason.
Can’t believe Franko Columbu or Robby Robinson weren’t in there
What aamazing work You did, didnt saw single video on TH-cam about bodybuilding with Such a detailed stuff. Im curious what is on channel lso. Im subscribe and like. All best
“Ronnie admitted to using steroids lie Arnold”. You think?
Dorian Yates, imo, looks much better now, at his age, than in his prime. I know, I'm not a bodybuilding fan, obviously, but I just think he looks phenomenally fit as an older man and not "freakish".
Bob Paris too. Always nice to see the guys looking good, albeit smaller, in their winter years
After cancelling 5 ads on a raw i am automatically enable to watch this video
My favorite was Serg Nubret he had the best symmetry of any body builder. I loved body building but it was ruined by steroid use.
he was excellent-similar or better than Zane as far as symmetry goes
Steroid OVERuse.
Serge was incredible!!!!
