    JoesGE.com is a pretty cool place (depending who you talk to it might be more than pretty cool. But hey, I'm just writing this down so that it says something down here, because that's more professional right?) and if you're still reading along at this point you might as well sit down and grab some popcorn because this is about to trail on about how we are this premiere repair service located in Washington State North of Seattle in basically the "Armpit of the US" near Mt baker (Mt Baker has the world record for most snowfall at 1,140 inches in a season). Even though it can smell bad around here we love the fresh air and being near the post office and in a quiet sleepy mountain town certainly gives us much closer access to Team Turtle and Team Beaver (Watch our "Who, what, when and where is JoesGE?" video if you don't get the reference).
    All this to basically say that we are all addicted to coffee and stay in the warehouse for ridiculously long hours in order to keep up with the demands of the youth for these two sided head audio devices and speakers that float when you throw them in the ocean or in your bathtub to test if they actually float. On top of that we do like it when less stuff ends up in landfills so we hoard everything on shelves with wheels so that we pollute less, it just sits in our warehouse loosing molecules slowly over time degrading to become smaller and smaller.
    If you are still reading at this point you deserve an award, or a high five, or something because you must either be the most patient person on the planet, or you read blogs frequently. And if the latter is the case, then this whole thing must seem pretty short so lets keep going.
    We do some really interesting things here at JoesGE which are frequently documented in our sometimes weekly sometimes never vlogs.
    Also, if you are wondering how we keep up with the demands of the people so well, its because 90% of the people that work here are all Russian around getting things done most of the time. Yes, that was a pun, you are welcome. We hope you have a pun filled day, because who couldn't use a few laughs?

    Ok, so couple of things that can be cleared up.
    1. If the ribbon doesn't go back in easily, flip up the tiny back tab like he shows. Also ( and this is really important ) if the black tape has covered the ribbon or if you are like me and popped the screen across the room trying to get it off and you didn't know that the black tape wasn't supposed to be there and you tried and tried to get the screen to work and couldn't, that is the issue. Remove the black tape before you try to reinsert the ribbon.
    B. You don't need to heat the screen in fact it only seems to hurt.
    III. If you bought a battery from amazon or newegg they will seem too big, they aren't. When you replace everything back in don't hook up the board to the snap connection first. Take everything apart, solder your new battery on, put the battery in first, put the board on top of that, then snap the connector on. Everything else is pretty easy.

      @@DouglasWellsUSA Typically blind fastened items like the screen is attached with a sticky electronics tape, and getting it warm with hot air helps soften up the adhesive so it releases easily. I couldnt tell from this video if it has adhesive, but that is the reason for heating it up

    Thanks!, Russ, for your informative, direct, and to-the-point video and tutorial. It worked for me -- the old Charge 2 is powered-up with a new battery (the original batt lasted over 5 years of continuous use, then would not hold a charge). The repair was a bit tense for me, because things are so tiny and tightly packed in the watch (of course, they need to be), but now, all's well! The battery I bought from an eBay seller, though, was SLIGHTLY wider than the original. Its side folds or side rails added a little extra width compared to the original, so at first the repaired watch would not fit in its case. Others may also encounter this problem, because it seems that NOT EVERY generic 60mAh 3.7 V LiPO battery sold is the same part-number as Fitbit's original battery. Well, I succeeded to very slightly squeeze the battery along its WIDTH with a pair of wide-jaw pliers. I did this twice, and the second squeeze was enough. This narrowed the width of the battery about 0.8 mm. It did not compress the body of the battery, but just the side rails, so the battery and its chemicals inside were definitely not harmed nor compressed. It was a relief when the second screw was tightened, and everything was buttoned-up. The battery charged quickly, and all's well with the Fitbit! I'm wearing the watch again now. I hope to get another 5 or six years from this battery. Kudos!, on a great video, and Thank you! -- you gave me confidence that I could do this "micro-surgery transplant" myself. ;-) --Joe, in Tucson / ARIZONA

    So pleased to know that it can be done as my partner is fuming at the idea that the battery only lasted nearly two years! They don't tell you that when you buy but I wasn't surprised, just upset that my watch isn't working! How much does it cost to get the battery changed? I wouldn't want to do it myself.

    DON'T USE HEAT! Not necessary, and warped my cover. Unlike a cell phone with a glass screen held on by adhesive, this is a plastic screen held on with clips and sealed by an O ring. I see no evidence of adhesive, So, just pry gently, trying to not cut the O ring with your pry tool. Use a blunt pry tool, like a DULLED razor blade. There are two clips on the button side, and three on the other. Note that two previous commenters seem to have damaged their covers with heat as well. I would also suggest that putting a foil wrapped LiPo batter in the sharp teeth of an alligator clip is asking to bite a hole in the foil. Be gentle with that. Finally, when I soldered the new wires, I had to do it a second time to get the wires flatter to the board because that metal sheet held on by those two screws we removed sits right over the + terminal and would be easy to short out. There is a thin layer of tape to insulate it, but still, be aware of this, keep the wires flat, and check that there is no contact when you reassemble. Don't let the magic smoke out. Thank you Joe's for posting the video. This is not meant as criticism, just intended to share "notes from the field" building on Joe's work to fine tune the procedure for the next guy who tries it. Before you hook the ribbon cable back on, remember to clean the fuzz off of the O ring, and the surface it rides on, and put a very thin smear of silicone grease on it. Very thin, like, invisible, no globs or blobs. it is a lubricant, not a caulk. How did we fix anything before TH-cam?

      I used a clean cloth and just rubbed it against it to heat it up just a bit by friction and was able to pop mine apart. I have a hot air rework station but it seemed pretty easy to get apart in the video so the heat from friction did the trick for me. Now if I can just figure out if it is my screen or the main board that is making my Fitbit glitch out on the screen. I can get it to show fine if I keep messing with it but as soon as it goes on the charger the screen freaks out. Take it off, mess with it and it will start working normal until I put it on to charge again and then the screen goes blank or crazy... :(

    I had a bit of trouble sliding the display ribbon back into the slot when reattaching the display. When heating up the Charge 2 the thin black flap melted to the connections on the ribbon. As a result, it wouldn't fit in the slot. Make sure the black flap is loose (and can flap up and down) before you try to reseat the ribbon (underneath the black flap) into the slot.

The two led's on the back are now flashing rapidly but still no display when I plug it in to charge. Could it still be the battery?

    Thanks for the Vid, I purchased the battery from you, the display came off very hard even with the heat gun, while removing the display ribbon cable a surface mount component came off the board, one of the solder pads for the component did not have any solder on it, managed to solder it back on. The replacement battery was significantly smaller but it came with a note indicating this was OK. The wires on the battery are way too long, I cut & striped to make fit and soldered the battery wires back on (with correct polarity!)
    Re-Installation, When inserting the display ribbon cable nothing "snapped" back in, did not have a good feeling about the way it fit, The ribbon cable had a black piece of tape on it, I suspect that when I removed the cable the tape laid down and stuck to the contacts on the cable (?). I snapped the display back on and put the charging adapter on the Fit bit, no display. Tomorrow I will remove the display and try again.
    Does the display/cover need fresh glue to assure that it doesn't fall off during the many times the FB is bumped against something while wearing it?
    I am a retired electronics engineer, I had all the right tools but my eyes are 62 years old and even with an eye loop and a magnifying lamp this repair attempt was challenging for me.

    Hi, I have a fitbit charge 2. Had it for years, and it was working fine. One day, the screen was not visible, but it was still charging and recording fitness data.
    I kept using it as it was, although I couldn't see the information on the watch itself but on my phone app.
    How can I be sure if perhaps I may need a battery instead of getting another one?
    Another thing I did notice was that the watch after charging it would be ok for a few seconds, then it would start to pulsate, which wasn't normal.
    What advice can you give me? Thank you.

However, this step proved impossible as I was completely unable to get the ribbon back into its slot. Thus I suggest before attempting to change the battery you take VERY GOOD NOTICE of how the screen ribbon fits BEFORE taking it off for the first time. (Alternatively, do not detach the screen and try to access the battery while leaving it still attached instead.)

      Have you went into setting and turned off notifications?

    • @avg_fit_dad

      I have. I set everything to be off as far as notifications are concerned. Fitbit seems to think it's a hardware issue, but nothing has changed. I just charged it and took it off and it started doing it.

    My battery did not fit back into the case! Bigger than the original battery. Tried to trim the casing downt with a utility and it started to smoke. It's sitting in a snowbank now.

    • @Joesge
      @Joesge  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not supposed to happen. Be sure that it is the Charge 2 that you are attempting to repair. Fitbit makes many units with a variety of batteries, and it is not the best idea to swap them or attempt to force them in. We also recommend removing the unit from the snowbank, as water damage is difficult to fix.

    • @oncebittensixtynine
      @oncebittensixtynine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Joesge I was trying to trim the battery casing, not the Fitbit. The replacement battery is 2mm wider than the original battery. The smoking battery was in the snowbank after I cut the wires to remove it from the Fitbit.

    Do you own a video camera that has a macro capability? Apparently not. This is got to be one of the most aggravating presentations I have ever seen. The subject of your video is smaller than the actual smartwatch itself when viewed on a large phone screen. In fact it is so relatively small compared to the visible field that to discern any detail at all, I must put it on my 43" smart TV. Even then, the Tech's fingers often hide the critical clips, bands, screws, and solder points from view. This reflects a pretty amateur approach in my opinion or.....
    I suspect that you shot it the way you did to convince viewers it was possible to perform this replacement if you knew what you were doing while still not giving enough information to do it yourself. Very clever marketing for your repair business! Kudos to you!
    PS: I've watched your video several times in an attempt to learn how I should perform this replacement. I'm not going to try it. I will take the replacement battery I bought to a local phone repair shop.
