Goddamn it. I dont mean to be cliche but this level of documentary truly captures the spirit and essence of EVO. From humble beginnings to its current flourish, it TRULY has come a long way. I suck at fighting games. Have never even gone to watch a tournament in person but man did this vedeo give me chills. The love people have for fighting games is so amazing.
Same for me. I'm the worst fighting game player in the world, despite having played them since Street Fighter 2 in the early 90s. But even I get emotional at stuff like the 'Fighting games is something great' thing, not because the words mean that much to me, but because they clearly mean a lot to other people.
Yeah me too. I bought SFV, seen all the videos and Evo matches. I have won 1 ranked match since I bought it. They make it look so easy, but it's not. And the game evolved. You can't just do specials and hope to win. No, there's counters, crush counters, Vskill activation, Vskill counters, stun counters, stun combos. My god. I just, no... and now with Sagat in there, I don't stand a chance.
@@revfuryfoxfive1857 Let me tell my esports story. I'm the guy who live in a big russian city near Urals mountains and kinda good but not the top on a number of games over the years: top-300 in WarCraft 3 on Battle.net Asia server over dial-up connection, bender of the winrate chart of level 20s players (can't find the link, basically it has 45 and lower for all levels but 26 with 56% and 27 with 49% because I played about a hundred games with 3W-1L schedule) in ranked and top-3 NA Solo ladder in League of Legends, as of now I work towards getting into Grand Champ bracket in Rocket League by the end of 2019 (day job is the only holder with WC3 Reforged release would be a 2nd one) and beating the crap out of locals in shooters in early 2000's. All of that happened because of the arcades and fighting games. My grandmother had one nearby so me (5 to 10 y.o.) and me with a little cousin younger by 2 years were constantly raiding there, playing Mortal Kombats and SF2. When I was 8 my mother made a 2-week trip to the Black Sea, and all the evenings I was in the boot with pay-per-play PSX-s playing Zena and for-fun 16 player tournaments in Tekken 3. I can still remember when I first play fighting games way back 1999 I think its king of fighters. I can still remember when we first saw that huge box with TV behind the truck. I can still remember how we wait until Kuya Dante call us and let us play for free the whole day before they open the arcade the next day. Thank you Kuya Dante and R.I.P
Damn. This whole thing brought back memories. Never been to an EVO. 10 years ago when I watched my 1st one and Daigo solidified himself as the goat (in my mind at least) I thought for sure I'd be on that stage before I was even 20. Time flew way too quick. KOF XII came out and I saw the art - then saw the game and said eww. KOFXIII came out and I picked the series back up and tried become a pro - watched all of EVO again but this time I watched every event - but I didn't get internet until I got to college and used the dorms wifi so I didn't play anyone and couldn't improve. Tried to get into the local FGC community but we barely had one. South Carolina? Smh no car or nothing so my upperclassmen who I went to high school with tells me about some tournament that's supposed to be huge, so I look at the events and say alright there's SFIV and 3rd Strike on the side, word. We drive there and the venue is a church activity room, and I see the setups in front of me, but when I looked to the left everything was big back CRTs with gamecubes. 2013. Gamecubes. My dude says you gotta play doubles with me. I thought I smelled a blackmail, and I still said no immediately. Then he said he'll pay. Haha, I went and entered his team Smash and did singles too. We would be there all day anyway since side event was last. I went to my 1st SF tournament match - and lost handily. I narrowly avoided a perfect twice. Losers bracket: I get perfected, then I take a game. How nice. That guy beats me and makes it back to grands and loses to the 1st guy who beat me. Seedings couldn't have been worse for that guy. It's funny cause when I used to look back on it, I just thought "man I fucking hate these scrubby ass hondas - so fucking cheap!" but when I think about it now I wasn't really qualified to say any of that. I go to SSBM singles and I pick Marth. My brother had Smash on all his consoles, so I grew up with it - I watched it at that EVO, so I thought I knew what I was doing. And it looked lie it when I won by 3 stocks in a ditto. The guy asked me what I ban and I had no clue what he was talking about so he says "It doesn't matter, I'm not gonna win anyway". I don't know what mind trick he played on me, but I felt like I was playing worse and worse. So I lost, and never played Marth again. Losers bracket I fight a Fox player with Ice Climbers and lose. Later I played doubles with my old friend and get to second round only cause we met some kids in bracket. We get waxed in winners side though. Last match was streamed and we got to game 3 and I panicked cause I was the last one left and I didn't know what was doing. My bud won his side event and I popped off right beside him. Went and got Cookout with the win money. It was great other than 3rd Strike - the guy who brought it left so early I only played one match. No entries I guess. Turns out the college didn't have any clubs for what I liked so I ended up joining my pal in the Smash club since they didn't mind me bringing my games. To think I'd end up playing their's instead.
Awesome video, wish you had covered SonicFox a bit more, like the ears coming off moment or explaining the significance of the DragonballFighterz finals, where Fox finally beat Goichi and proved he was "more than just a champion of games nobody plays" as coined by his detractors.
Latif also ended daigo's potentially 3peat tournament, imo effectively ending his true reign as the greatest sf player. Evo 2012 is a pivotal moment for street fighter introducing us to the next generation imo
Fighting game is the greatest genre ever! I rebember we held a small tournament (its a small city) only 8 of the best local Tekken Players faced for the first time, I remember we saying "its just for fun"... Man! I seen people get frustrated, others jumping and screaming victories, I get to the "grand final" against the local legend, my Kazumi agains his Alisa the it was 2-2, the last fight I choce my old main, Law! was 2-2 in rounds, so was the last round, I was losing, then I do a mistake and when I though I was dead, he drops the combo and I launch him, put him against the wall and finishing the fight... I cry, yep! No price money, no cameras no nothing! It was said it was for fun, but we know it wasn't, it was for the righ to say "I'm the best". I play other games, we already did other kind of tournaments but this small tekken 7 tournamen and a KoF 2002 made before that, was the only time the players take the competition seriously!
Great video! But I was disappointed that Mortal Kombat and Injustice was not mentioned. Two great games and not to mention Mortal Kombat was a direct rival to Street Fighter in the arcade era. Plus Mortal Kombat 9 showed very well at Evo. Perfect Legend is apart of Evo history. Another thing is that it’s great that Sonic Fox was mentioned for dbz but Mortal Kombat and Injustice made him famous at Evo.
cause T.V is still trying to get you to watch tired sitcoms. This shit only happens when an ammount of freedom is given. streaming services made ProGaming content happen a good 70 years earlier than the would have on TV alone.

"It only gets better every year."
*Melee fans have left the chat*
Good riddance
Melee out? The statement holds true!
No mention of Lil Majin in evo 2018?
The first american to get top 3 in tekken 7
Khandar William not everything is about America
@@keir92 Its really about a low tier character reaching all types of hype levels and literally a top 3
@@swiggityswo9558 king is not low tier
Its not that iconic tbh
Why you making me all emotional man?!?!
Because fighting games is something so great
I think i teared up or cried at least 5 times during both videos
Rest in peace Melee...
Great videos. Really like your channel. Keep up the good work
That outro was something else
This canal is... so great
Wait this isn’t bookworm adventure deluxe
Rip melee at evo
Damn i was about to start crying near the end. God damn that was beautiful.
Can't wait for smash ultimate at EVO
IDC about fighting games, but I love these videos.
Awesome video, wish you had covered SonicFox a bit more, like the ears coming off moment or explaining the significance of the DragonballFighterz finals, where Fox finally beat Goichi and proved he was "more than just a champion of games nobody plays" as coined by his detractors.
Ohhh... I want it back...
this video is so amazing im quite new to competative fighting games and this was awesome
Great videos for part 1 and part 2. But no love for Mortal Kombat or the NRS scene? They played a huge part in the FGC revival and Evo in general.
Great small DOC guys. Keep it up :D
Latif also ended daigo's potentially 3peat tournament, imo effectively ending his true reign as the greatest sf player. Evo 2012 is a pivotal moment for street fighter introducing us to the next generation imo
We need part 3, cause 2023... is crazzy!
Who else got dust in their eyes?
yea man, where'd all this dust come from......
Why this kind of documentaries aren't in the TV? :(
cause T.V is still trying to get you to watch tired sitcoms. This shit only happens when an ammount of freedom is given. streaming services made ProGaming content happen a good 70 years earlier than the would have on TV alone.
Perfection. One day, I'll go.
This channel is awesome
