  • This video contains paid product placement for Freewheel. Orbea has released a freshened up version of its top-end and biggest selling mountain bike, the XC-race focused, 100mm travel Oiz and slightly more trail-friendly Oiz TR.
    These new for 2021 frames are constructed from Orbea’s latest OMX carbon fibre, shaving weight from one of the lighter cross-country frames already out there. This new frame material features on the top three models of both the race-focused Oiz and the trail-focused Oiz TR.
    It is the use of OMX carbon in the top-end models that takes the limelight for 2021, with Orbea claiming a 250g weight reduction on this frame set, dropping it to a claimed 1,740g for a size Medium, including shock.
    What do you think about Orbea's new Oiz? Do you prefer its more trail focused set up, or are you all-aboard the weight weenie XC race train? Don't forget to let us know in the comments!

    Is it the olympic-level XC bike of dreams? or perhaps it's missing the mark in 2021. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

      Adding a volume spacer in the rear shock is really what the bike needs! (I’m around 80kgs)

    Thank you guys for the video. Quick feedback: most of us don’t necessarily speak in terms of “modern vs traditional geometry;” more importantly, what we care about is, “does it ride well?” So while it does help academically to talk about the geometry for geometry’s sake, it would help if you could then follow it up with statements about how it rides - especially compared to its competition. You did touch on it here and there but it left me a bit confused at times. After all, a bike is a system: it is more than just a head tube angle and bottom bracket height.

    I ride last years TR model and I'm very happy with it for long marathon rides. Don't really have anything to complain about. Also I find it's resonably priced compared to the competition.

    I already have an Oiz and it is an absolutely beautiful ride and race machine. I went for the 120 upgrade, but had the rear shock reduced to 100, so a perfect XCM machine - slacker front, but keep the steeper seat post angle. The spec and price put the bigger brands to shame and show just how much a top level bike should cost! I am not a fan of the squid-lock. Having used the Scott Twinloc previously I felt this was better, allowed for on-the-fly adjustment. A minor issue, and one that is easily changed.

    • @vxlpower
      @vxlpower 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      when you reduce the rear travel you slacken the seat angle..

    • @SordidaTonus
      @SordidaTonus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      actually the XC and TR versions have the same e2e for the rear shock. It's just the stroke of the shock that changes. So, having 120mm on the front means that regardless the rear travel your seat post will get slacker

    Have you tried the climb with open suspension? This is one of the most efficient bikes out there. Which one would be better? Lux? Scalpel? Epic? Blur? Four-stroke? Spark?

  • @roilev
    @roilev 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It is single pivot rear end. Only the Canondale's Scalpel is 4 bar design since the chainstays flex. On all the other bikes, the seatstays flex and there are no pivots on the chainstays.

    I am eyeing the Orbea OIZ, but I have to say I am frustrated beyond belief by Orbea's decision to not state bike weights on their website. Instead they "want you to go to local dealer and try the bike for yourself" and a lofty slogan "let the ride decide". Yeah, like the dealers have all the bike types and sizes in stock and even if they do, they let you ride the bike for a day...

      I really don't understand why they do it either. Their bikes are actually pretty light, so it's not like they have to be ashamed and try to hide the numbers from the customers. On the opposite, they could use it to their advantage as a selling point. It's really bizarre.

    Would a press fit BB be a deal breaker or could one convert it to a threaded BB ?

      pressfit could have been a dealbreaker in the early stage of pressfit bb's :)
      it has evolved like to the good side. and if you use proper tools and maintain it its actually super easy.

    would be interesting to see how they spec the lockouts on fork & shock, because at bikefest kalnica they had a few orbeas with squidlock but i felt like the normal fox lockout (open/close) te middle position was useless

    • @antoinebs
      @antoinebs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the forks, some models are only 2 positions (so just stays open when shock is in mid position), like my 34 SC factory (2019, maybe change for 2020 models ?)
      For the shock, the open mode is more plushy, you can feel it when trail becomes rough, and I also feel that mid position is better for power transfer when climbing fast. But you are right, if you don't look the lever, sometimes its hard to say which mode you are in, especially when you ride casually.

    from the explanation of the squidlock system it seems to do exactly the same as Scott's trusted Twinloc system. Is there any mechanical/operational difference?

    • @antoinebs
      @antoinebs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, it's just a 3 positions lever (a good one, but nothing particular). It is pretty slim though (no barrel adjuster).
      What they should say, is that you have dropper and suspension levers sharing the same clamp. Easier to fit on the handlebars, but still not perfect : the dropper cable is a tight fit with XT brakes, hard to setup, but when its okay you have good access when riding.

      Many brands re-name different iterations of Toray fibers for their marketing. Trek has their OCLV *number* which is nothing else but Toray. I guess it's the same with Scott HMX or whatever else

    I can't say the colour scheme does much for the looks of the bike, the gold makes it seem I don't know, 1990's ? Which I guess isn't a bad thing, it just doesn't make me want to run out and lick it all over, like say a Santa Cruz or a Pivot. I own a canyon Lux, tastes okay.

    • @TomMarvin1
      @TomMarvin1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Personally I thought the gold looked incredible in the flesh! It's not a stock colour, though, so you're not tied to it! The Lux is an incredible looking bike, though, too.

    Everything functions properly th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of TH-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
