    I have 2020 OIZ M30 120mm version and I can confirm this is a beast. Can't imagine this tested version with 2kg less, it must be amazing.
    And yes I confirm the SquidLock is just THE big plus of this bike. Once you get used to it, it's fantastic for efficiency.

    Another absolutely fantastic review Will and team! Has the perfect combination of depth and character, with no detail amiss while still brilliantly entertaining. The ‘squidlock’ system seems to hit the nail on the head and I loved your comparisons at the end, especially to the brain shock on the epic, as well as the more old school and conventional two way system on the scalpel. Great work as always, already looking forward to the next review!

      Cheers for the feedback Adam! That's a fair point about the XRC 1200 wheels, though I was really impressed with the new XRC 1501 wheels. They use DT Swiss 240 hubs and Competition Race spokes (instead of 180 hubs and Aerolites), but they're only 64g heavier than the 1200s, and I suspect that weight difference is concentrated at the hubs. A great riding wheelset and tyre combo for sure on this bike - I'll find it hard going back to skinnier tyres and rims! [Wil]

    I have to say it again, Wil this is one of the best reviews of a bike, you not only described the bike perfectly and how it rides but also compared it to the other bikes I’m actually also evaluating. Keep doing a great job and comparing bikes to each other that help us without test ride opportunity to make the best decision. When comes the SuperCaliber? That’s the last one on my list, I’m waiting for your review. In overall you would pick this bike over the Epic Brain for XCO Races, right? I mean in snappiness, pedal efficiency and suspension platform?

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jose! We've just received a Supercaliber for testing, so stay tuned to the website for more info on that one!
      In general, yes I'd pick the Oiz over the Epic for XCO racing. While I like the cleanliness of the Epic's cockpit, and the user-friendliness of the automatic Brain damper, it does result in quite an uncompromising ride quality that can punish you if you're not on your A-game. With the Oiz, you can setup the suspension to be quite smooth and forgiving in the Open mode, and still have the snappy pedal efficiency in that Medium mode. That tuneability makes it more versatile overall in my experience.
      Hope that helps Jose! [Wil]

    As always an amazing review Will. If you were going to go for a bke that could cover some XC races / marathon races but also has enough swagger to cover most trail duties, but not obviously bike park and black runs what would you go for. Also that builds up nice and light. Epic Evo?

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Epic EVO would be a great choice Oliver, as would the Merida Ninety-Six 8000. Both surprisingly capable bikes given the short travel, and just loads of fun to ride! I've not ridden the Trek Top Fuel myself, but that's another bike I'd throw into the list. [Wil]

    Superb review! I've listened even some Orbea riders that this Oiz is a little UnStable at high speeds. Did you feel something like that, what can you comment on it? Thank you Very Much!

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video!
      In regards to the Oiz being unstable at high speeds, I think it really depends on what you're expecting from an XC race bike. The head angle is fairly steep, so compared to a slacker trail bike, it isn't as stable at high speed.
      For me, the suspension made a big difference to descending. Once I lowered the shock pressure, the Oiz sat deeper into its travel. That helped to increase traction, and it helped to keep the bike lower to the ground, increasing stability at speed. Once setup like this, I found it to handle pretty similarly to the Spark and Blur, though it was more stable for descending than the Scalpel, Epic and Lux.
      If you get the chance, there's a load more detail about my experience of testing the Oiz in the full review, which I reckon you'll enjoy reading: flowmountainbike.com/tests/2021-orbea-oiz-m-team-review/
      Hope that helps! [Wil]

    Nice review .. The Oiz is a great bike ! I ride a 2020 LTD and agree with all the ride/handling observations you've made. There has been quite a lot of controversy over the squidlock in various forums .. essentially coming down to the fact that the shock spec'd has an on/off compression circuit so it isn't possible to have an adjustable mid-setting. I don't feel any difference between the mid/open setting on the squidlock (and I'm certainly not alone in this based on a lot of responses to this topic in MTBR forums). My understanding was that on the lower model fox suspension there is a mid setting (like the old CTD) .. that allows this setting to work with the squidlock. I'd be interested if you could confirm with FOX or another suspension expert whether this mid-setting actually exists on the fox float DPS spec'd with the Oiz .. I don't believe there is any proprietary internals to the shock that would make it operate any different to an off the shelf.

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey there Brett, thanks for watching mate, and glad you enjoyed the review!
      So the Oiz uses a custom rear shock called the i-Line DPS, which is manufactured by Fox for Orbea. It's based on a regular Float DPS, but with a few key differences.
      If you're looking at an off-the-shelf Fox Float DPS, there are two versions. The standard model that offers a 3-position compression adjustment (Open/Medium/Firm), and a remote version that offers a simpler 2-position lockout (Open/Firm).
      The shock on the Oiz basically combines the two - it offers a 3-position adjustment (Open/Medium/Firm) but it's remote-controlled via the Squidlock.
      The i-Line DPS shock also differs from a conventional Float DPS in that the lockout mechanism (where the cable attaches to the shock) is on the other side of the shock's head. This is how Orbea gets that super clean look with the internal routing, while still providing easy access to the rebound dial.
      My understanding is that the i-Line DPS shock comes on every Oiz model, from the entry-level H30 up to the M LTD. However, I haven't ridden the cheaper models, so I can't confirm if the functionality is identical. I also haven't ridden any older Oiz models, so I don't know if the system has changed.
      What I can say is that the compression adjustment is very noticeable on the trail - as you'll have read in the review, that Medium setting provides a significant increase in the shock's compression damping, and it's a big part of this bike's performance and adaptability.
      Hope that helps explain Brett! If you're not able to feel any difference in the shock damping with your Oiz, then perhaps it's worth checking in with Orbea directly about the shock on your bike?
      [Wil]

    • @draftwood
      @draftwood 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was my finding as well Brett. I have a 2020 OIZ M10.
      I called Fox and talked to a tech. I gave him my shock build code and I was told the lock out is either open or closed ,no middle setting.

What about then if you would also optically differ every chapter from another in the course of the video? Of course i can have a look to the timestamps, but there are more distinctive optical means: You could blend in captions or just make a short fade-out-fade-in when you“re on a chapter boundary. Hey Michael, I've not tried the Oiz TR as of yet. Keen to give it a whirl, as I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the 100mm Oiz. With both options using the same frame, I suspect the TR version will share a similarly light and efficient feel on the trail. I don't believe it will be dramatically plusher for the rear suspension, and the racy cockpit will be very similar too. I reckon the biggest difference will come with the bigger fork chassis, which will offer more up-front confidence for sure. We'll see if we can track one down to test! [Wil]

Once they were adjusted and bled, I didn't need to touch them throughout the entire test period. Power and modulation is excellent, and I really like the feel with the XTR Race levers. Given Shimano recently introduced Flat Mount callipers at an XT and SLX level, I suspect they won't be going anywhere soon! [Wil]

I guess my experience with flat mounts was in the workshop and were usually with cheaper flat mounts as apposed to the high end ones, and I honestly had no idea that Shimano had brought them in the XT and SLX range, I guess the main turnoff for me was as you said in your review, being a heavier rider just means that I need slightly bigger brakes to slow me down!

      @@Bigred10101 I find the perception of what makes for adequate braking in the mountain bike world interesting. I ride a Oiz m10 aggressively as part of my conditioning for Enduro motorcycling. There is no situation EVER on the mountain bike where my index finger is all I have use to modulate with precision or stop the bike. And that's with single piston calipers. And I ride on actual mountain descents in the PNW. The 250 lb. motorcycle with Brembos on the other hand maybe requires two fingers or a moderate tap on the rear brake to control even at significant speed down hill.

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I stand at 175cm tall (5’9”) and I found the medium size to suit me well. By the way, my BB-to-saddle height is around 70cm. You’re a fair bit taller than me (around 179-180cm) so I suspect a large frame will be the best size option for you. If you went a Medium, you might find you’d need to run a longer stem to get a comfortable cockpit length, and that would slow down the steering somewhat. Hope that helps mate! [Wil]

    Question? How stiff is the back end in comparison to say, the new epic? I noticed there is no seatstay bridge.

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're pretty similar - both use a one-piece carbon swingarm with engineered flex through the seatstays instead of a pivot at the rear dropout. Both are also exceptionally lightweight XC bikes, so there is of course a bit more twang through the back end compared to a heavier, bigger travel bike. That said, I've found both to be very sharp and direct, with no issues with tyre rub. That being said, I am on the lighter side - a rider closer to 100kg is going to experience more flex, and may be able to better discern more of a difference between the two chassis'. [Wil]

    Question: Can the Scott twinlock be fairly easily disconnected from the fork and a new topcap installed? I'm not sure why anyone would do this, as the medium setting allows for climbing with less bob than a fully open fork. But this option may demonstrate more versatility than the Oiz.

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Rich! Yep, you can easily disconnect the cable from the fork on a Scott TwinLoc bike, and if you wanted, you could replace the remote system with a conventional crown-mounted top cap adjuster. I've tested all three versions (Spark, Genius & Ransom), and in all three cases I removed the fork lockout cable partway through the test period, so that the TwinLoc remote was only activating the rear shock. Reason being is that the lockout is useful for out-of-the-saddle sprinting and going up smooth climbs, but if you're going up a technical singletrack climb, generally you're seated and you want the fork to be both active and also sagging into its travel, rather than being firm and sitting high in its travel. In my experience, that's why the Squidlock system on the Orbea works so well, since the Medium setting is only activating the rear shock, leaving the fork open so its free to sag into its travel and absorb impacts on the way up. It's simple, but surprisingly effective. Hope that helps explain mate! [Wil]

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey there Jean-Louis! If you check out the full review, there's a comparison between the Oiz and the Spark, Anthem, Epic, Lux & Scalpel. We can't always fit everything into the video (otherwise they'd be about an hour long 😂), so you'll always find a lot more detail in the written reviews.
      In answer to your question though, the Oiz compares favourably to the Scott Spark. For a start, it fits 2 water bottles, which for me at least, is becoming an increasingly important attribute for XC racing and trail riding. Orbea uses Enduro sealed cartridge pivot bearings, rather than bushings that you'll find in most of the pivots on the Spark. While I do like Scott's TwinLoc system and the way that it limits and perks up the rear travel, Orbea's Squidlock is more ergonomic and because the fork remains open in the Medium position, it is more functional for climbing. The Spark's geometry is excellent (and it remains one of the best on the market), though the Oiz has a notably steeper seat tube angle, giving it a more aggressive riding position, especially when heading uphill. I'll note that it has been a while since I've tested a Spark though, so I'd really need to get on one for a refresh and some back-to-back testing, particularly now that they've moved to a 44mm fork offset. I'd say it's unlikely that Scott will send us one to review though, as the current Scott Spark is 4 years old now. I suspect they're also working on a new version, so we'll be waiting eagerly to see what the engineers have cooked up...
      Hope that helps mate!

    thanks for sharing . How tall are you ? I'm 1,68 m myself Do I pick a small or medium?

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube
      @FlowMountainBikeYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello pal! I stand at 175cm tall, and the Medium is spot-on for me.
      At 168cm, Orbea recommends either the Small or Medium for you. As to which will suit you better? That's hard for me to say - I'd recommend looking at what bike you have now, or similar XC bikes you've had in the past, and consider the reach and effective top tube measurements and how they compare to the Oiz.
      If you're looking at an Oiz with a dropper post, the other measurement you'll want to check is the minimum saddle height. If you choose a bigger size, but you have short legs, there can sometimes be an issue with getting a dropper post low enough for your saddle height. And vice versa.
      If it looks like you can fit either size, it may be worth considering what kind of cockpit setup you're after. You could always go the bigger size and fit a shorter stem. That would quicken up the steering, but you'd get more stability with the longer wheelbase.
      Alternative, you could go the smaller size and run a longer stem for a more aggressive XC racing setup.
      Sorry for not giving you a solid answer, but hopefully that info is of some use to you mate!

      Personally it's not a deal breaker for me. Providing that the frame is built to high tolerances, I've had good experience with modern press-fit BBs from Shimano and SRAM. It's the older generation PF30 bottom brackets that generally had more issues with tolerances and creaking etc. [Wil]

    Everything functions properly th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of TH-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

      I wonder what other brands cannot be run. From my experience with my 2020 Oiz Squidlock that includes the dropper remote, only the Reverb AXS cannot be run. Well it could, but the remote situation will be really awkward.

    • @FlowMountainBikeYouTube

      Yeah that Reverb AXS remote is pretty huge, and would for sure end up fighting for space with the Squidlock remote. You'll be in a similar situation with any under-the-bar remote really. However, you could pretty much run any popular dropper post (even a Reverb with a DeHy kit from BikeYoke) and pair it with a slim over-the-bar remote (like the KS Over Bar remote, Fox Transfer 2x remote, Wolf Tooth Barcentric remote, or BikeYoke 2X remote). That's actually what Orbea does on all the models that come stock with a dropper post. Hope that helps mate! [Wil]
