In US news today, the Bernie Sanders Fox News town hall did not go how Fox News channel might have liked. This NowThis News video shows the highlights from the Bernie Sanders town hall and how Bernie Sanders 2020 is setting itself apart from other 2020 presidential candidates in the 2020 elections. Just before this Bernie Sanders Town Hall, live on Fox News, we finally got to see 10 years of Bernie Sanders' taxes. Critics often call Bernie Sanders socialist, Fox News included. Making a 2020 election prediction now might be premature as there are many 2020 election candidates.

Most people don't go to doctors or hospitals for fun.
Not even in countries like Germany, Sweden, France etc. where health care is free of charge (you pay the chosen public health insurance directly via your monthly salary).
What Berny Sanders proclaims is a social market economy.
The German system is an example of this system.
The state health insurance companies are structured as non-profit-making companies.
They are in competition with one another.
Due to the competition, they are also dependent on working as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.
Additional insurance can be purchased by the citizens (e.g. better dentures, single bed, head physician care, etc.).
And if you have an income limit of over € 60,000 a year, you can switch from state to private health insurance.
Switching from private to state insurance is more difficult.
This is to prevent private insurance companies from simply dumping their old members (the costs increase with age) into the state insurance companies.
So everyone who earns enough is encouraged to think about whether they can still afford private insurance in old age.
The average cost (what the German pays for health insurance per year) is ~ 4500-5000 € per year.
In public health insurance, children are automatically insured by their parents.

Most people only hear the "your taxes will go up" part, and either aren't told or don't realize that premiums, copays, and drug costs will be nothing or minimal. And there is the selfish attitude of not wanting to pay towards anyone else's medical costs. Sadly that is the current situation with many people here.

The insurance and other related industries are very powerful. They get outlets like FOX to pretty much make healthcare-for-all a negative thing. They talk about "free market" (which isn't actually a real thing, as so much of it is controlled by industries), and put the fear of "socialism" into people. And people either aren't smart enough, educated enough or exposed to any ideas other than those espoused on these very-much-pro-corporate far-right outlets.
America is pretty f***ed because of this, on MANY issues.

You pay MORE than we do for LESS coverage. The _current_ system is bankrupting the nation, not Bernie's proposal. Right now you pay for costs of healthcare, salaries of people involved, the part of profit that is reinvested into the company and/or innovation and.......... the massive profit that goes in the private pockets of shareholders. In a public system you pay for the costs of healthcare and the salaries of people involved... an efficient public system is _always_ going to be cheaper because you take the profit out of the price.
You pay ten times as much for certain drugs, you pay maybe double the insurance premiums for half the coverage. It's a terrible system that is mostly designed to enrich the 1%. I know it sounds crazy at first, but a public system is cheaper and better at the same time. It only leaves the 1% in the dust, but they'll find other entrepeneurial adventures, I'm sure.

One thing I genuinely respect about Bernie is that he isn't willing to stoop to dirty politics or childish insults or ruthless pragmatism to get what he wants. He's willing to focus on one thing and one thing only: the issues. Nothing more, nothing less. He's focusing on solutions. Whether he wins or loses, irrelevant. Whether he gets booed or cheered, irrelevant. Bernie stands by his convictions and refuses to budge. He refuses to step into the filth. He remains incorruptible.
In many ways, he is the Cato of America. And I fear that just like Cato, he will only really be appreciated after his time.

For Europeans it's very "difficult" to understand why there's no universal health care in the US. To give you an idea, here's how it works in Germany:
We have mandatory health insurance, so even homeless people are covered, unless they "escape" the system "successfully". There's statutory and private health insurance. The majority (~ 87%) are members of one of the statutory health insurance companies. We pay for our health insurance or more precisely, we and the employers pay 50% each. It's affordable, but it isn't a "gift", because it isn't paid for with taxes, except for homeless people.
We pay 2% of our annual income on top for perscripted medicine, but it's only 1% if we're suffering from a chronical illness. We either collect our receipts and send them to our health insurance company or we pay the extra fees in advance. Of course. the latter only works if you know that your income won't change during the following year. We'll recieve a card that confirms that we've paid our extra fees and then we'll get everything for free for the rest of the year. In case we overpaid we'll get refund. All "normal" vaccinations like flu, measels, polio, diphtheria, tetanus and even TBE are covered. Only vaccinations we need if we're going on holiday to "exotic" countries are chargeable. Regular check ups are also covered and the older we are, the more different check ups we can have.
We don't lose our health insurance if we're unemployed, because it isn't linked to the job. If we lose our job, our unemployment insurance will pay the missing 50%. Employers must pay our wages for up to six weeks if we're on sick leave. If we're sick for more than six weeks, the health insurance will take over and pay 90% of our wages for 72 weeks. In Germany you usually can't get fired because you're sick. There are only few exceptions. If we go to hospital, everything is free. We'll only have to pay 10 € per day for up to 28 days, but if we already paid our extra fees, we won't be charged.
Universal health care in Germany has a long history. It was introduced in 1883 by Kaiser Wilhelm II and chancellor Otto von Bismarck, and it didn't happen because of, but against socialism. They were more or less forced to do that, because there was much pressure coming from the workers, although the SPD (social democratic party of Germany) and all trade unions were banned between 1878 and 1890. The emperor and his chancellor feared that the - then illegal - social democrats would gain influence and that there'd be riots if they didn't act, so they introduced universal health care (1883), accident insurance (1884) and disabilty and pension insurance (1889). I'd love to tell you about the British NHS, but I don't know enough about it. It's different and it's paid for by taxes. I guess there'll be British viewers who are really qualified to talk about it than me.
