Google CEO Sundar Pichai was brought in for a hearing with members of Congress about political bias in search results. But as the hearing went on, Congress members including Rep. Ted Poe, Rep. Lamar Smith, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, Rep. Steve King, and Rep. Steve Cohen have no idea how the Internet and technology works. They asked about movement tracking, political bias in search results, how Donald Trump's image became associated with a search of the word 'idiot,' unrelated issues with the iPhone, manipulating search, an online school, and more.

one of the worst parts is that there are legitimate questions they should have been asking, and _none_ of them are about the possibility of an employee who works for google manually editing search results. old people misunderstand this all the time. The sheer scale of google results just doesn’t allow that to be feasible. It’s algorithmic biases that can actually undermine democratic systems, but I would be surprised if these guys could change the brightness on an ipad, let alone understand what an algorithm is.

    • @Unpopular_0pinion

Google has been doing exactly what tik tok has been doing for ages. Making a Terms Of Service Agreement that is so long and convoluted and full of legal jargon that the overwhelming majority of people don't even bother reading it because they feel like the government would make sure there can't be anything too bad in it. But in that TOSA they get to know EVERYTHING about your life. They know information about you that you'd need to stalk someone to know, and it's illegal to stalk, but because people blindly consent, it's perfectly legal.
We need to make a test that everyone can take that asks what of their information they feel should be private and no ones business, basically what they would consent to and not consent to. Then the only government intervention we would need is for all TOSAs to explicitly show you if they're incompatible with your desired experience with technology based on that test, and for the mandatory eradication of all data collected or generated using that TOSA should you opt out of using the service.
