    Great video. I have the same kayak and love it. When I drilled the hole for the cable I bought a small rubber stopper with a hole in the center from a beer and wine supply store. I slit the cork lengthwise and actually ended up triming some of it away till it fit just right. It's not totally water tight but better than leaving a big hole

    Nice vid. Why do some people just put their transducer in the hull caked with putty around it? Could you have done this and would it make it easier to keep the cables in the hull?

    • @TheFishingMommy
      @TheFishingMommy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will Chu yes I could have! Two main reasons I didn’t: It would have been more hassle to move it back and forth between the kayak and the Jon boat we also have. Also, in-hull installation doesn’t give you accurate water temps-at least not for over an hour.

    This is a nice rig runthrough! I just got my Bonafide SS127 (thanks again for your honest review which helped a ton and also told me what to watch out for -- I got the rudder installed off the bat) and will be rigging that up soon. I decided to go with a crate. I shore fish as well, but the YakAttack BlackPak can hold several of my 3700 size boxes and I can fit a few more under the seat, so I should be good there. Like you said, they really engineered that boat nicely to have a ton of room.

    • @TheFishingMommy
      @TheFishingMommy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamisson Hiffner not dense! I used this platform mount which the Garmin screws onto, then connect the mount to the transducer arm. It does seem like this should be easier to achieve without having to buy several items, but this is how I had to do it. www.amazon.com/Scotty-368-Universal-Sounder-Mount/dp/B00FPQZ95K/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=3NX2JYWUQ5Y4Z&keywords=scotty+universal+fishfinder+mount+368&qid=1554415203&s=gateway&sprefix=scotty+un,aps,129&sr=8-1&linkCode=sl1&tag=fishingfamily-20&linkId=1a2637c1e300bde215d6e4302fa0b552&language=en_US

I just bought a perception outlaw 11.5 and can do a ram mount up front and go through a scupper hole but I don’t want to run a ton of wire. I can place my battery under my seat and the rail is right beside my seat

    Thank you for the video!! I’m installing the Garmin 4 on an older Hobie kayak and this is extremely helpful!! I’m actually using the same battery and waterproof battery box! A couple of tips: 1: seel up the hole where the battery wire enters the kayak. 2: seel up the hole in the battery box. Your system is not waterproof and your kayak has a small hole that allows water inside. You can add waterproof connectors for easy plug and un-plug.

  • @Bayou.Billy.
    @Bayou.Billy. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the transducer need to be in the water? Ive seen some people use duct seal and put it in the hull and ive seen some folks use an arm like you did, so its in the water. Your thoughts? For me the hull design would be easier and cheaper, but i want to make sure that would work too.

    • @TheFishingMommy
      @TheFishingMommy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally wanted to be sure I got accurate water temps, so that's why I put it in the water. I did do the in-hull transducer thing but it took like an hour to get a stable water temp reading and even then I was not really confident in it.

  • @jpettymd
    @jpettymd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for posting this very practical video. I just got the same kayak and the same Garmin device you have. After watching your video I ordered the Scotty track, transducer and sounding mount. Its a little extra investment but I think will make everything so much more practical. Some posted about the arm not being able to come all the way up. Is that an issue for you? Are you often having to completely take the arm off and on for transport and getting in and out, etc? Thanks again!

    • @TheFishingMommy
      @TheFishingMommy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy it was helpful for you! I haven't had a problem with the arm not fully extending or retracting...but in full disclosure, I did actually lose the hardware that came with the transducer arm, so I had to improvise, LOL. I now use two zip ties to hold the two arm pieces together. It works great and I can easily adjust the height how I want it, and it stays where I put it but if I run into any obstruction it easily retracts upward. I actually think the zip ties are even better than the wing nut! I don't have to take the arm off to enter or exit the kayak--I can just swing it all the way up. I do put my Garmin on the left side and enter from the right, if that makes any difference. Thanks again!!

    Awesome video! Ive been looking around to make sure that a Garmin Striker 4 will fit on my kayak. A lot of the reviews seem to say that the user had trouble attaching the Garmin's transducer to the mounting arm.

    • @TheFishingMommy
      @TheFishingMommy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, the cords themselves are waterproof but of course the connection points aren’t so you should use some putty or something to seal the hole in the box. The battery is sold separately from the sonar unit. The box is just a regular waterproof box I got at either Amazon or Walmart, and I put a sponge still in its wrapper in the bottom to hold the battery in place, then drilled a hole in the box for the cord to come out.

    • @TheFishingMommy
      @TheFishingMommy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Bryan, that’s a good question; I’d say your best bet would be to just mount PVC or rod holders to a milk crate & bungee it into the rear tankwell behind you. Very few people are lightweight & balanced enough to stand in a kayak like this so just make sure your holders are within easy reach from a seated position :)
      You’d only have to add 2 so I think that’s totally doable.

      Scotty and Yack Attack make specific hardware for mounting the Scotty slide track to the boat. Scotty uses a rubber grommet which goes into the boat. You'll need ro drill a 3/8" hole for each grommet if you use The Scotty screws and grommets. 3/8 × 8 plus holes; to me those holes are HUGE. I chose to go with the Yak attack rivet system which required 3/16" holes (much smaller holes). I also used a some waterproof silicone under the scotty plate and around the rivets. Good luck and happy fishing.

      That said...
      If I had it to do again, I’d probably just use the included Lifetime paddle (or in your case, try out both that one & the Atwood for at least a few hours each) until & unless I started experiencing problems with it. Paddles are pricy!

    Good clean install! Your yak is very similar to my previous kayak. I had a Lifetime Weber 120. Served me well. One thing to note.... I preferred using a much longer paddle in the Native Slayer. I have a 260. Mainly because the Native is MUCH wider than my old kayak and I'm also much higher off the water on the raised seat. So my old paddle felt a little short. oh and I also like to stand up and paddle at times. I know... but I have a PEDDLE drive.... well in these shallow Florida lakes, you can't always use a drive (Such as at Fellsmere - in all that hydrilla), so I do paddle at times.

      +Old Lady Angler great tips, thank you! That makes sense about the longer paddle; I’ll also check out how much work it is to paddle each of the big boats I try...I know it’s going to be a lot harder!

      @@TheFishingMommy Yep it's definitely a different animal to paddle, but very doable. I do close to 10 miles at Fellsmere and sometimes 80% is paddling. But on most other lakes, really I only use the paddle when I'm launching thru shallow water.

      @TheFishingMommy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Old Lady Angler to be really honest I think if we ever moved to FL I’d very likely do a lot less freshwater fishing. I think I’d use the kayak much more for inshore salt...regardless, I’d need to paddle over oysters, through seagrass, and shallow entries, so the same basic requirements as in a lake!

      I’d be very careful modifying it; this is a fantastic budget yak but if you’re bumping up against the weight limit, it’s going to get less stable & reliable with every pound added to it. And every mod changes the weight distribution or center of gravity, potentially.
